On a hot and sunny day on the island of Sodor, many different ships made their way to Brendam Docks. Passengers scurried off of their ships and to their coaches, while cargo was unloaded by a rather bitter crane. He was grumbling to himself as he was unloading something that wasn't just regular cargo, but an engine.
"Who are you?" Cranky asked the engine in an annoyed tone.
"I'm Ciel! My driver and fireman brought me here when they-"
"Quiet! You're distracting me!" snapped the crane.
Cranky placed the new engine on the tracks below. She is a Midland Railway 115 class with a dark purple livery. The first engine she encountered was a diesel shunter who had buck teeth.
"Ahoy there matey!" greeted Salty. "It's always great seein' new faces."
"A new face means a new engine to bug me." Cranky grumbled.
"Ciel, the controller called and he wants us at Tidmouth Sheds!" called out Ciel's driver as him and the fireman stepped into her cab.
"See ye later!" Salty whistled as Ciel steamed away to the station.
Being new to the railway, Ciel was unfamiliar with the island's various stations and sheds. She whistled to Gordon, who rushed down the line with the express.
"Woah, that was Gordon!" exclaimed Ciel in amazement. Her driver would sometimes read the books about Sodor to her, usually on slower days with little work to do. This only made the move to Sodor more exciting for Ciel. She stopped at a water tower, whistling to the next engine she saw.
The engine had six small wheels, a short stumpy boiler, a short stumpy dome and was painted blue. Two female coaches were coupled behind him. "Hello, I'm Thomas." he greeted.
"I already knew that!" laughed Ciel.
"But I don't already know you!" replied Thomas, cheekily.
"I'm Ciel, I just arrived here. Say, do you know where Tidmouth Sheds are?"
"They aren't too much further!" began Thomas, who then explained the directions to Ciel. Ciel whistled a "thank you" and finally arrived at the sheds, which were empty.
"Glad to finally meet you, Ciel." greeted a stout man who just came out of a blue car. "Sir Topham Hatt!" exclaimed Ciel, which made the fat controller laugh.
"Yes indeed I am." he smiled. "I unfortunately don't have any work available at the moment for you Ciel, so you can rest. Do enjoy your-" Sir Topham Hatt suddenly had to rush to the phone in his office.
"What is the emergency?" he asked.
"Percy derailed, and we can't find another engine to take the mail train tonight!" answered a signalman.
"I will find another engine at once." replied Sir Topham Hatt.
After the call ended, he came back to the sheds. Ciel heard him mumbling to himself about Percy and the mail train issue.
"I can take it!" the Midland engine blurted out.
The fat controller thought about it for a moment. "I don't know, you're a bit new to Sodor, Ciel."
"Please?" pleaded Ciel.
Sir Topham Hatt was unsure, but decided to give her a chance. "Hmm, I guess you can take it tonight." he said. Ciel and her crew were delighted.
While Ciel waited to be let out for the train, her driver and fireman were invited to a welcome party hosted by Thomas' Driver, Bob. "Everyone, our guests of honor, Finn and Morgan, are here!" He exclaimed when the two (driver and fireman respectively) walked into the house.
"Let's dance!" cheered Morgan. Finn quietly went over to the food table, feeling a bit nervous.
"Bob's parties are a little silly, aren't they?" laughed the man who was also at the table.
Finn nodded. "Which one do you drive?"
"I'm Charlie Sand, Edward's driver." smiled the man.
"Edward? My engine Ciel endlessly talked about meeting him on the ship." said Finn. "I may have read some of the books to her…" He became a bit more confident when he saw Charlie Sand smile.
"BLOODY HELL MORGAN!" shouted one of the men, who eyed a broken vase. "Sorry Ted." laughed Morgan, nervously at Henry's fireman.
"Apologize to Bob's wife! That was her vase!" yelled Ted.
"That man sometimes, he's maddening." mumbled Finn to no one in particular.
"Were you saying something?" asked Charlie.
Finn quickly returned his attention to Charlie. "I was wondering if you wanted to introduce Edward to Ciel. Ciel is in a shed close by, so if bringing Edward doesn't trouble you…"
"Oh, Edward is all the way in Wellsworth. My apologies. I'll tell him about Ciel though." replied Charlie. The two drivers spent the party discussing all kinds of things.
Later, it was finally time for Ciel to take the mail train. Thomas was next to her, helping with the job. "Since Percy isn't here, we'll have to work extra hard tonight." he said.
"Right!" replied Ciel, determined to make a good first impression.
"Who knows? Maybe I'll run into Lady tonight!" laughed Thomas as he chuffed away.
"Lady?" asked Ciel, but Thomas was already too far away to hear her. Ciel then steamed away, ready for her first job on the island.
After the first station she grew more confident in the job, and began to really get the hang of it. She watched the workmen unload the last of the mail at the last station, feeling proud.
"Ciel, you're finally here." smiled a mysterious magenta engine.
"How do you know my name?!" inquired Ciel, slightly terrified.
"I'm Lady, I keep a lot of this island's magic alive. Sometimes I visit Sodor at night."
"At night?" Ciel asked.
"Ever since…he…was brought here permanently, I felt that visiting Sodor in the daytime was too much of a risk." answered Lady. "Are you finishing your mail deliveries?"
"That's right!" smiled Ciel.
"You did a great job on your first day." smiled the magical engine.
Then there was trouble, Lady began to feel stuffed up. "Ah…CHOO!" she sneezed. Gold dust went everywhere! "Sorry…" she sighed.
But when she opened her eyes, Ciel was nowhere to be seen.
Thomas chuffed into the station. "Nice to see you Lady, did Ciel already leave? I wanted to tell her that she did a good job tonight." he asked.
"Oh no…Oh no, this isn't good…"
Thomas was concerned for his friend. "What isn't good?"
"The gold dust…" muttered Lady, which only confused Thomas more.
"Where's Ciel?" Thomas asked again, this time nervously.
"Thomas, I think I accidentally transported her to another dimension." sighed Lady.
"WHAT?" gasped Thomas, who hadn't heard anything so absurd in his life.
"Quiet down a bit, we don't want to wake up Diesel 10." whispered Lady, politely. "Don't worry, we just have to find a way to bring the gold dust to Ciel so she can be transported back. I'm too scared to go to this dimension, I'll have to find another engine to go on this dangerous journey."
"I know!" exclaimed Thomas. "I'll find Ciel and bring her back! I'll do anything for you, you know." he smiled.
Meanwhile, Ciel was fast asleep at the sheds. She slept soundly, believing that everything was just a dream. She doesn't know of the horrors that soon await her…
