When I get angry, bad things happen. People suffer.

Lita paced back and forth backstage, knowing eventually she'd have to face Kane's rage after her stunt in the ring. When would he tire of harassing her?

Turning, she crashed into Kane's chest. His fist slammed into the wall next to her head, trapping her in his hold.

"What the fuck was that?" He spat, eyes wide, his voice breathless after the exertion of the match. Sweat flew off his body.

She cowered back, cradling her hands to her chest. "I don't know?"

Stacy's questioning about her intentions regarding the pregnancy and Kane's interview before his match gave her the idea to anger Kane. Convincing herself she couldn't keep the baby even with the minuscule chance it could be Matt's, she entered the ring to set Kane up.

The moment he had lifted her to perform the chokeslam, she'd instantly regretted everything. His bewildered rage after sitting her back on her feet frightened her more than anything she'd ever seen before.

"You don't know?" He shouted back in disbelief, getting even closer in her face. "I think I know exactly what that was."

"Please," she begged, unsure of what she pleaded for although he hadn't granted her mercy before.

"Oh, I'm not going to hurt you, Lita," Kane replied in that mocking soft tone he adopted so often before lashing out, "because that's exactly what you want, what you expect of someone like me."

Lita shook her head, unable to meet his intense glare. "I don't want this."

She didn't want to be out of the ring for who knows how long, especially now that she had the women's title from Trish so close to her grasp. She didn't want Matt to hate her. She didn't want to be stuck with this monster, have part of him growing inside her baby.

"We never get what we want," he sneered. His lip curled, reaching down to poke her chest. "You saw the interview, didn't you? You know the two things I want, only things I want is the baby and to be champion. And you know not to push me like that! You purposely misled me!" The bite in his voice grew with each accusation. "If you ever, ever do anything like that again —"

"It was stupid, okay," she agreed, hoping her admission would soothe him even a little.

He gave her that menacing laugh. "Stupid doesn't begin to cover it, Lita." He placed a finger under her chin, forcing her to look at him, continuing to speak in that deceptively soft voice. "I don't know if I can trust you with our baby."

Lita's eyes widened. Did he mean to take the baby away from her? Had she just been some sort of broad mare for a monster?

"I need to keep an eye on you. I think…" he looked away, a pleased grin growing across his face before he returned his gaze to her, "I think we should get married."

"What? No, no, no." Lita stiffened, shaking her head furiously.

"What's the matter, Lita? Maybe domesticity is just what you need. I can't have the mother of my child endangering herself or my baby, can I? That's what normal people do, right?"

"I won't do anything like that again, Kane, I swear," she frantically said.

He gave a short nod. "Oh, I'm sure about that. Costing me the match, the title." His eyes lowered to her stomach before his palm reached out to caress it, ignoring Lita's shudder. "Trying to kill my baby."

"Kane —"

"I like your strength, Lita, your fire, but you need some taming, molding to be the perfect wife and mother. And I'll be the one to do it."

He suddenly moved away from her, stalking off with a mocking smile, leaving her to process everything that had happened in the last month.

Matt had left her despite her attempts to explain everything to him, how she had slept with Kane in exchange for Matt's protection, having no idea of Kane's ulterior motives. Her short-sighted attempt at angering Kane into attacking her miscalculated just how much he wanted their baby, his offspring as he had called it. And now, he wanted to marry her. Hell, even Eric Bischoff seemed willing to use her and Benoit as pawns to satisfy Kane, granting Kane the no DQ ability to win via pinfall, submission, count out, and so on, while Benoit had to force Kane to tap out.

Kane's decision to torment her had brought about an end to all her hopes, everything she had worked so long for. At least she had put a standstill in his dreams of being the champion.
Recovering from the shock of the night's events, she wondered what happened to the Kane that refused to hurt her when she attempted a Litacanrana against him or the one that had rescued her with the Undertaker from Triple H and Stone Cold's attack.

End Notes

I'm unable to find a clip of this match anywhere outside of Peacock. It's towards the very end of the June 28, 2004, edition of Monday Night Raw. Kane's interview can be watched here /eT9k-ClfqXY.
