Two months later, Carisi is finally putting his home office together when someone knocks at the front door. Amanda's napping with the baby so he runs as quick as he can to the door before it wakes them up. It's a package from the United States Marines. He can't imagine what they'd be sending him, so he brings it inside and opens it up on the kitchen table. His phone. He assumed that was lost forever and had already gotten a new one. It's beat up to hell, but looks in better shape than he thought it would so he brings it to the charger on the kitchen counter and leaves it there.
Amanda comes downstairs after her nap, little Dominick the third still sleeping. Sonny's hard at work in his office so she starts to make herself some tea, putting the kettle on the stove, and leaning back while she waits for it to heat up. The phone on the counter…it's got a broken screen and it looks like someone ran it over with their car in the mud. Sonny's phone. Where did that come from? She leans over the counter to see if it turns on, and it does. Sonny had told her about how he made a video for…..just in case. She knows it's going to tear out her heart and stomp on it, but she just has to see it.
Even still. She can't do it alone, so she takes the phone to Sonny.
"I wanna see it". She tells him. Her heart feels like it's going to beat out of her chest.
When Sonny looks up from his desk, he sees the phone, and he knows what she wants to see.
"I don't think that's a great ide"-
"Please". She cuts him off. He sets his pen down and pushes his chair back away from the desk and stands up.
"Okay. C'mere". He holds his hands out and leads her to the leather loveseat. He knows this is going to hit both of them like a ton of bricks. She goes to sit next to him, but he pulls her across his lap, her arm going around his shoulders. The pull he feels, the one where he has to be as close to her as he can, to always be touching her, feeling that connection…it's been overwhelming since they had almost four days where they weren't sure they'd ever have it again.
Sonny has his arms around her, holding the phone so they both can see it. Now's as good a time as any. The girls are at school and little Dominick's still asleep.
"Ready"? He asks. "We dont' hafta"-
"I do. I have to see. It's in my head all the time". She tells him. She thinks seeing reality might be less painful than what she's been picturing.
He hits play, and holds the phone with one hand, and rubs her back with the other. Slow comforting circles that hopefully will counterbalance the sadness she's about to feel.
He knows she's crying, even before she swipes the tears away. Just when he thinks the video is over, the image jumbles and the phone drops, focusing on the steel beam across the ceiling as Olivia rushes to Sonny. He realizes that was all caught. His breakdown. That's when Amanda really loses it too. She can hear the utter despair in his crying. She's never heard Sonny cry like that before.
He reaches to shut off the video but Amanda stops him. She's listening to Olivia try to soothe him, tell him he's going to see Amanda again, hold his daughters, meet his son…
Only when the phone dies, does the video stop. Sonny puts it down next to them, and Amanda's arms snake around his neck, pulling him in. He embraces her and they both cry. Tears of sadness, of what could have been, but also tears of joy that Olivia was right.
After what seems like an hour of them just holding each other, Amanda shifts in his lap, bringing one leg over so she's straddling him. She lifts his chin so he's looking up at her.
"I love you Sonny…..I just….I need to be with you…right now".
She leans down to kiss him. The gentlest of kisses, her lips capture his top lip between them and Sonny's hands slip under her t-shirt. Warm and slightly calloused, she shivers as they cover her back, sliding her closer to him, letting her feel how much he wants her…..always.
He pushes her shirt up, and Amanda's arms lift so he can pull it off, then he's pulling his own t-shirt over his head, their lips connecting again. Needy and breathless, she deepens the kiss, her tongue sliding against his. She breaks the kiss gasping when his hands knead and play with her swollen aching breasts. His mouth keeps contact, sucking bruises along the delicate skin at her neck and she starts to pull off her leggings. She has to stand up long enough to strip them completely off, and Sonny pushes his own sweats down. In seconds she's back in his lap, and he's inside her. They still for just a moment. Sonny leans back and cradles her face in his hands.
"I love you…..Amanda….so much. She starts moving, her eyes never leaving him as she rides him, connected in every way possible, as close as two people can possibly be. There's no way to ever explain how much she needs him…needs this….Sonny is the only person who'll ever understand. His hands move to her hips now, and her breaths quicken. She has all the control, but they're in perfect sync as always.
When her eyelids flutter and her grip on his shoulders tightens, he senses she's close. One hand slips between them, he knows exactly how to touch her, send her flying over the edge and she does, calling out his name as she comes undone, pulling him over the edge with her. His hips lift them off the seat once, twice as he comes with her, burying his face in her neck, breathing in that scent of her…..holding her tight as their bodies move together ….slowly coming down.
She remembers to breathe again and she grabs the blanket off the back of the loveseat, covering them both when she lays her head against his shoulder and he holds it tight around them. His hands trace invisible patterns up and down her back, under the blanket, until they both fall into a sated, contented sleep that neither of them ever takes for granted again.
