Nearly two excruciating hours later and the bell for lunch finally rang. Gumball had somehow managed to endure the two lessons he'd had to sit through, though not without a great deal of difficulty. Not only did he have his rumbling stomach and ever-worsening headache to manage but also the constant glares of everyone in class who had seen his and Penny's argument outside. Darwin was looking around the class, and at Gumball and Penny, and seemed very concerned and confused as to what on earth was going on.
Penny..he'd glanced over at her a lot during the lesson, only for her to scowl at him or turn into her medusa form upon noticing. It hurt to see her so angry and upset, and it hurt even more knowing that he was the one who had caused her such pain. He had no idea how he was going to fix their relationship...or even if he could. For all he knew she might never talk to him again...
When he wasn't looking at Penny he had just stayed silent, taking notes and doing his work as he tried his best to not break down in tears in front of everyone. As soon as the bell had rung and he'd been dismissed the feline had ran out of the classroom as fast as he could, eager to get away from such a hostile environment.
As he headed to the cafeteria the feline suddenly let out a gasp of pain, a sudden bout of dizziness overcoming him. He stumbled and leaned against a locker, clutching his head and wincing in pain. His head was killing him. He'd have to go to Nurse Markham and ask if she would give him some aspirin once he'd had his lunch.
He remained leaning against the locker for a minute or so until his dizziness went away before slowly standing back up and heading over to the cafeteria, his stomach loudly growling, demanding it be fed.
He quietly entered the cafeteria., before grimacing. Ugh...this noise was not going to help his headache...
Penny saw him enter and immediately got up and moved as far away from him as possible to another table near the back, wanting nothing to do with him.
The kitten teared up and let out a whimper, his ears lowering. Heartbroken, he made his way to the lunch line, eager to get something to eat.
Once he'd gotten his food he looked around, trying to decide where to sit. His eyes stopped as he noticed Darwin sat at a table with Carrie, waving his fin as if inviting him to join them.
He briefly considered accepting his brother's invite, though quickly decided against it. Right now he wanted nothing more than to be left alone.
He began to make his way over to an empty table instead. He wasn't paying attention however, so didn't notice a puddle of water someone had spilled. He stepped right into it and slipped, sending his food flying off the tray and onto the floor, spilling it everywhere. He meanwhile unceremoniously crashed into the ground.
The feline growled, clenching his teeth. He stopped up, still holding his tray. As his fists clenched and he began to breathe heavily with rage he slammed his tray onto the ground as hard as he could, breaking it in half, before walking back to the line.
As he was walking he gasped, leaning against a table as his head suddenly throbbed again with another sharp pain, this one even worse than the last. His head was in agony, and these sharp throbs of pain were starting to become more frequent. If this continued on much long it would become unbearable...
He finally reached the front of the line again, now the only one left to get his lunch.
Rocky looked at him and sighed. "Dude, you know the rules, only one lunch per person," Rocky told him.
"But I tripped and spilled mine on the floor!"
"Oh, well in that case I would give you something but we're all out of cottage pie. All we have left is some vegan goat cheese surprise, if you're interested in that."
"...What's the surprise?" Gumball asked hesitantly, eyebrows raised.
"It's not actually vegan." Rocky shrugged.
The feline sighed frustratedly. "Forget it, I'll just go hungry then..." He said through gritted teeth.
He put his tray away and went to leave the cafeteria when Jamie stopped him, glaring at him furiously. She had a large meaty stain on the front of her clothes, giving Gumball a pretty good idea of what had happened.
"You! Your clumsy butt got cottage pie all over my clothes, and now you're gonna give me some compensation for it!"
"Jamie, please, I am not in the mood for this right now."
"I don't care. Either you pay, or you pay."
"Look, I don't have any money left to pay you. Besides, even if I did I wouldn't give it to a dense-minded nimrod like you" The kitten snapped before immediately covering his mouth in horror as everyone gasped. He had just said that? To Jamie!?
Jamie narrowed her eyes and cracked her knuckles. She was mad.
Very mad.
A couple of minutes later Gumball stormed out of the cafeteria. He was covered in bruises and cuts all over him and his clothes were badly ripped and torn as a result of Jamie's beat down.
The feline clenched his fists with rage as his headache throbbed ever worse. He dizzily stumbled through corridor after corridor as his head pounded so hard it felt like his brain was trying to escape from his skull. Eventually, he couldn't take it any longer and punched a random locker a few times in frustration, needing some way to vent his pain.
He gave it one final punch, hard enough to dent the door, before he held his paw in pain. As his head continued to mercilessly pound the young kitten slowly leaned against and slid down the locker as he held his head in pain.
As he sat there in agony, feeling all kinds of emotions he'd never felt before he broke down crying yet again. He never felt this way before. He was just so...so out of control! He was so angry, tired, upset, frustrated, exhausted...
...and most of all, terrified. He was so, so scared. Something was happening to him, but he didn't know what. He'd never experienced anything like this before. He'd never been in so much pain.
"Gumball?" He was brought out of his thoughts as he heard a voice softly call his name. Without even looking, he knew immediately who it was, but didn't care to reply. He was in too bad a mood to talk to anyone at the moment. Even him.
He simply responded with a smile and grunt of pain.
"Buddy? Are you okay?" Darwin asked again. "M-me and Anais are really worried about you. When you didn't arrive at break we went inside and looked everywhere for you, but we couldn't find you anywhere!"
After still getting no response Darwin sat down next to him and held his paw.
"D-Did something between you and Penny? I saw in class that she was really mad at you. Like, madder than I've ever seen her be toward you before. A-And everyone was glaring at you too. D-Did I miss something?"
The feline hesitated,, tears continuing to trickle down his face. Eventually, he finally responded, barely loud enough for Darwin to hear.
"...she broke up with me."
"What? i-I-I didn't hear you."
"I SAID SHE LEFT ME DARWIN!" Gumball finally snapped. "SHE BROKE UP WITH ME!"
Darwin gasped his face falling as he felt horrible for Gumball. He knew how much Penny meant to him.
"Oh my god, Gumball, I...I'm so sorry...I...w-why? Why would she do something like that?"
He received no response, his brother simply remaining quiet.
"Gumball?" The fish called out concerned.
The young kitten didn't say a word, simply looking down ashamed.
"Gumball...W-What happened?" He asked as he remembered how angry Penny was with him, beginning to get concerned that the situation was a lot worse than Gumball was letting on.
Gumball slowly looked down toward his paw which was now shaking heavily, trembling in fear at what it had done only hours before.
Darwin's gaze followed his brother's, landing on his shaking paw. As the fish studied the trembling paw and his brother's ashamed, almost horrified, reaction to his questions everything started to click.
"Oh my...oh my god...y-y-you...you didn't..." His eyes widened in fear.
The feline slowly looked up at him, struggling to hold back more sobs. "I didn't mean to! I was just so angry, a-a-and she just kept arguing with me, and i...i just snapped and lashed out! I s-swear, I didn't mean it! I didn't mean it! I would never, ever do something like that on purpose!" Gumball burst out sobbing again, unable to hold it in any longer,
Darwin paused for a moment before silently wrapping his arm around his brother, pulling him in for a hug.
"Woah, hey, It's alright, it's okay!"
"No...no it's not okay. It's not okay at all! I've lost my girlfriend! S-She hates me! She's never gonna talk to me again, and it's all my fault!" The kitten continued to sob as Darwin stroked the back of his head.
"Shhh,, shhhhhm just take deep breaths and calm down."
"Don't you think I've tried that!" His brother snapped, his spiraling emotions getting the better of him.
Darwin gasped, shocked to hear Gumball snap at him in such a manner. He rarely ever spoke to anyone like that, let alone him.
He placed his fin on Gumball's shoulder. "B-Buddy, it's okay. I know you're angry, but-"
"Angry? ANGRY!? ANGRY DOESN'T BEGIN TO COVER IT! 'M WELL PAST BEING ANGRY! I'M FURIOUS, NO LIVID! WHAT COULD I HAVE POSSIBLY DONE TO DESERVE A DAY LIKE THIS!? GO ON, TELL ME, WHAT!?" He yelled.
"I don't know Gumball, really, I don't, but I swear, things will get better. This is just one bad day in a sea of much better days. If you just get through today then tomorrow will be a lot better!"" Darwin tried to calm him down.
"It doesn't damn well seem like it! Things just keep getting worse and worse every freaking second! You, by the way, are not helping!"
"Gumball, please, you need to calm down. Being this angry can't be good for you." Darwin squeezed Gumball's paw, doing his best to try and calm his brother down from his enraged state.
"DON'T YOU THINK I KNOW THAT! IT'S NOT AS IF I WANT TO BE MAD! IT'S NOT AS IF I LIKE THIS! I WANT NOTHING MORE THAN FOR TODAY TO END! I WANT NOTHING MORE THAN TO GO HOME AND HIDE UNDER MY BED COVERS FOR THE REST OF TIME!"
"Please, just listen to me. Take deep breaths and think happy thoughts. It'll help, I promise." Darwin remained patient and collected, trying his best to try and get through to Gumball.
Gumball growled and tuned out Darwin, not wanting to listen to any more of his attempts at calming him down. It wasn't going to work. He was way too far gone for that. He knew he was just trying to help, really he did, but he was just too angry to care or even think straight.
His thoughts shifted to everything that had happened today, and how only a few hours ago he couldn't have been happier. Now look at him, he was seething with rage and had lost his girlfriend. How had he gotten to this point in only a few hours?
"Gumball? Gumball! Are you even listening to me? Gumball!"
Darwin quickly dragged Gumball back out of his thoughts, which only served to make him even angrier.
"I can't help you if you aren't going to li-"
Gumball finally snapped, unable to put up with Darwin's nagging any longer. He shoved Darwin to the ground and he screamed "I DON'T CARE! I DON'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT WHATEVER STUPID THING YOU WANT ME TO DO TO CALM DOWN! IT WON'T WORK! SO JUST SHUT UP! JUST SHUT YOUR ANNOYING LITTLE TRAP AND LEAVE ME ALONE, YOU IRRITATING, USELESS PET!"
Once again time froze. Once again Gumball's paws snapped over his mouth. Once again his eyes widened with fear as Darwin teared up.
"Oh...o-o-oh my god...D-Darwin...buddy...I-I-I...I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to...I didn't mean what I..."
The fish stood up, tears streaming down his face, and turned away, beginning to slowly walk away.
"Darwin, wait! Buddy! Please!"The feline ran after his brother but Darwin continued to ignore him.
"DARWIN, PLEASE! I-I-I'M SORRY! D-DON'T LEAVE ME, PLEASE!"
Darwin turned the corner and walked away, paying no attention to him.
Gumball began to cry into his paws again, even harder than before, never hurting so much in his life. Now he'd gone and upset his brother too! Hurt him! What was wrong with him!?
The feline gasped and screamed in pain as he clutched his head, tears of pain and sorrow streaming down his face. His head felt like it was on fire, it was unbearable!
Trembling and breathing heavily the feline stumbled toward the door to the courtyard, Everything was spinning and he was barely able to walk it was so painful.
He just...he needed some fresh air...y-yeah, fresh air. That'll...that'll help...
Beginning to genuinely panic the feline slammed the door open and stumbled outside.
