Breaking Canon
Author's Note: Hello, you wonderful people! Welcome to a brand-new Spider-Man fanfic of mine. This will be my fifth Spidey fanfic, but I'll be the first to say I've never made something like this before. I never thought I would do a self-insert styled story, but here I am. The Spider by I'mjusttryingtofindmyway is the fanfic/author that inspired me to make this. Basically, I think we've all wished to be Peter Parker/Spider-Man at a certain point of our lives. Heck, you could still be wishing for it, so that's where this fanfic comes in. I generally have no idea how this is going to go, lol. The only thing I know for sure is this is my own created universe. However, it will also be inspired by multiple forms of Spider-Man media. Oh, and one more quick thing before we begin. When I refer to the main character as I, that really means you. Enjoy the fic!

Chapter 1: Life Will Change
BGM: Kung Fu Panda - Oogway Ascends
Okay, this is definitely the weirdest thing that's ever happened to me. All my life, I've always to be Spider-Man. He's my favorite superhero, and nothing will ever change that. But… if you really start to think about it, as cool as being Spider-Man would be in some aspects, have you ever thought about the entire picture? Like, if you really, really think about it, would you want to live Peter Parker's life? Even if you're not the biggest Spider-Man fan in the world, you still might have an idea on the amount of suffering this dude goes through, in and out of the mask. Long story short, living Peter Parker's life, or any superhero's life for that matter, wouldn't be as fun as you think.
A valid question does need to be asked, though. What if… what if you didn't have to go through all the pain and suffering? What if you had the knowledge to change these so-called canon events? Can I break these canon events? You've seen Miles Morales in Across The Spider-Verse. He's directly challenging the theory of canon events, so why can't I? I can do it. I've seen every movie, I've read the comics, I've played the video games, and I've watched every show. I'm a Spider-Man fan, so this is kinda second nature to me at this point.
But never in a million years did I think I would get the chance to do something like this.
I currently find myself in an all-white abyss, which seems to be never ending. In front of me stood the man himself, Peter Parker. I can't believe it! I'm not really sure what's happening right now, but still, I can't believe it!
"Oh my God, you're Peter Parker!" I exclaimed, clearly freaking out over meeting my favorite superhero. "I never thought I would get the chance to speak to you!" I said, but then I paused. I looked around the white abyss, still trying to figure out what was going on. "But... what's happening? Where are we? Why are we here?"
I had another pause, before asking another question.
"Why am I here?"
Peter Parker looked at me and showed a small smile. His answer was rather simple.
"You have to continue my legacy."
I became wide eyed at this. "Wait, what?" I managed to say, instantly realizing what Peter meant. "Continue your legacy? You're saying that I have to be Spider-Man?!"
Peter gave a simple nod, still keeping his smile. "You'll have all my memories, all my powers, my intelligence, and even my body. Whenever you need assistance, I'll be there to help you on your journey." Once he said this, it's like Peter's body began to fade away. Not like how he did in Infinity War, but like how Master Oogway faded away in Kung Fu Panda. Very graceful, to say the least.
"Peter! I don't know if I can do what you do! Peter!" I kept shouting, but my shouts would fall on deaf ears as I watched Peter ascend into the heavens. Then, I would hear another person, who may have been watching Peter and I talk in this abyss the whole time.
"EXCELSIOR!"
I frantically turn around, immediately knowing the voice who would say such a thing.
"Was that Stan Lee?!"
That was all I was able to say, before the abyss formed into a beautiful, golden light. It surrounded me, and it was the last thing I saw before my entire life changed forever. I also probably screamed throughout this process, but hey, who wouldn't?

I was in my bed, or… well, Peter's bed. Boy, this is gonna take some time getting used to. I quickly wake up like I experienced some type of nightmare, even though it wasn't really a nightmare. In fact, what did I truly experience a few moments ago? The passing of the torch? A funeral? Why is this happening to me?
"Peter! You don't want to be late for your first day of school!" a voice said, which came from downstairs. It didn't take too long to figure it out. It was Aunt May. Aunt May is my actual aunt now.
I jumped out the bed, quickly looking at myself in the mirror and saw I was Peter Parker. It took a long time to process these recent events, but eventually… I realized this was real. It's not like I needed more proof, but seeing myself in Peter Parker's body only solidified what was going on.
"Holy crap…" I managed to say to myself, but then, I needed to put myself to the test. In a sudden movement, I shot out a web from my wrist at the mirror. "Oh my God, I'm like Tobey Maguire!" I said, seeing that I didn't need web shooters, and instead, my webs were organic. This is so disturbing and yet so cool. All the times I pretended to shoot webs as a kid, and now, I'm actually shooting real webs!
"Okay, gonna have to get used to webs coming out of me… Yeah, that did not sound right." It sounded way better in my head, I swear. "I can still make web shooters, though. Different types of webbing would make me more versatile. Spider-Man PS4 has taught me this."
Okay, one more test, and then I'll be done questioning this whole thing.
I jumped and extended my arm, wanting to see if I could stick to the ceiling. Well, obviously, I could do that too. In my head, I was reenacting the scene where Andrew Garfield was trying to prove he was Spider-Man to MJ and Ned in No Way Home.
Although, there's one problem.
I don't know how to unstick myself.
"Okay, spider powers… you can let me down now." I said, but I was still sticking to the ceiling. "Please let me down? Pretty please?" My attempts at trying to talk to my spider powers were useless. Oh great, how am I gonna get down?
"Come ooooon… I have all of Peter's memories, along with my own Spider-Man knowledge, yet I can't figure out how to unstick myself?" This was humiliating in every sense of the word, an insult to my Spider-Man expertise.
Then it hit me.
This is just like Miles in Into The Spider-Verse!
"Right, right. All I gotta do is relax." I told myself, now beginning to sing.

"Needless to say, I keep her in check, she was a bad-bad nevertheless, callin' it quits now, baby, I'm a wreck, crash at my place, baby, you're a wre-AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Before I could finish the verse, I loudly crashed to floor, not realizing how much I was relaxing myself which caused me to unexpectedly unstick from the ceiling. I fell right on my back, and the pain didn't feel pleasant whatsoever.
"My back!"
I tried getting up, but then my back would crack.
"Ooh, my back!"
Truth be told, I think it may have sounded worse from downstairs, because Aunt May immediately got near my door and knocked on it. She would call my name to see what was going on. "Peter!"
I took a deep breath, slowly getting up as the back pain would eventually go away. I had to answer Aunt May before she got even more worried. "Yeah?!" I replied.
"Are you alright?" asked Aunt May, as I thought about how to respond.
"Uhhh…" I thought about it, before finally saying, "I'm fine."
When I said that, another voice would speak to me, and to be honest, I was quite surprised to hear it.
"Are you sure you're okay in there, Pete?"
That was Uncle Ben. There's no mistaking it.
"Wait… how far back am I in Spider-Man's past?" I thought to myself, but then, something clicked. Everyone knows the canon event when it comes to Uncle Ben. His death leads to Peter truly becoming Spider-Man, as he learns with great power, comes great responsibility.
But… what if Uncle Ben didn't have to die? I have the power, along with the knowledge, to prevent Spider-Man's greatest tragedy.
Well, I think it's arguably his greatest tragedy, but hoo boy, does he have a lot of 'em.
Uncle Ben's seemingly inevitable death doesn't have to be canon. Not when I'm Spider-Man.
"Yeah, I'm okay, Uncle Ben!" I told him inside my room. "Just getting ready for school."
"Well, you don't wanna be late. The bus is gonna show up any minute now." Uncle Ben told me, which made me realize I had to get myself together.
"Right, right! I'll be ready in a second!" I told him and Aunt May, as I heard them now walking back downstairs.
BGM: Tears For Fears – Everybody Wants To Rule The World
I did everything I could to get ready. Brushed my teeth, washed my face, put on some new clothes, and all the above. Grabbing my backpack, I ran downstairs, seeing Aunt May and Uncle Ben for the first time. Well, seeing them in person for the first time, to be specific.
"Gotta go, running late, love you guys!" I managed to say all in one breath, not bothering to eat breakfast.
"Peter! You didn't eat your breakfast! Peter!" Aunt May exclaimed, but it would prove to be useless since I was already out the door. Uncle Ben could only shake his head and laugh a bit.
"What are we going to do with that boy, May?"
Aunt May sighed, giving a shrug. "I have no idea."
I was outside, being as determined as ever to catch the bus. I will not have Peter's reputation of always being late to everything, and I'll definitely not have his reputation of not showing up at all. I could eventually be eating my words here, but hey, you better believe I'll be putting up a fight.
Luckily, the bus wasn't here yet, so I'm already off to a good start. At the bus stop, I couldn't help noticing a pretty girl with long red hair and green eyes. She turned to look at me, showing a nice smile.
"Hey, Tiger. Ready for the first day?"
Yep, there was no doubt about it. This was Mary Jane Watson. I knew she was pretty, but actually seeing her for myself was a life changing experience. Now I realize why Peter was so crazy about her.
I smiled back at her. "As ready as I'll ever be." I replied. "Something tells me that this is gonna be a school year for the ages."
"Well, it looks like somebody is excited." said MJ, and a few moments later, the bus would show up. MJ and I both got on the bus, electing to sit next to each other. "Got any special plans for the school year?" she inquired.
"Not sure yet. Guess I'll just have to wait and see how everything unfolds." I told her, as the bus made its way to Midtown High School.
Midtown High
As MJ and I got off the bus, we walked to the entrance of Midtown High. We were greeted by two of our best friends, Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy.
"Looks like the gang is reunited." Harry said, having a smirk on his face. When I saw Harry and Gwen, I didn't know what to think. Certain canon events lead to Harry losing his mind, while Gwen's most famous canon event is… Well, you know. Dying.
I can stop these things from happening. They won't have to go through any of that stuff as long as I'm here.
Off topic, but Gwen is quite pretty. Long blond hair that looked like it had some pink or purple-ish highlights, blue eyes, and a black headband on top of her hair. I can see why Peter was crazy about her too.
"Most of the gang, anyway." Gwen corrected, knowing there was one person absent, because unfortunately, he went to a different school.
"Miles should've convinced his parents to enroll him over here." said Harry, knowing Gwen was talking about Miles.
"I'm sure we'll see him in the future," I said. Meeting Miles will be fun. I wonder if he already has his powers in this universe? "Still, how's everybody feeling about the school year?"
"Ready to get it over with." Harry bluntly said, having no enthusiasm about school whatsoever.
"I'm feeling good about it," Gwen replied. "New year, new experiences. It should be fun."
As soon as Gwen said this, I was suddenly pushed by somebody from behind, causing me to lose my balance and fall. "Really, Spider-Sense? You couldn't help me at all?" I thought to myself, getting up to see who pushed me.
"Oops! Sorry, Parker! I totally didn't mean to push you just now!"
It was Flash Thompson, and currently, it was quite obvious he was being sarcastic. You see, Peter Parker may have taken Flash's crap, but me?
I'm not Peter Parker.
Well, I am, but I'm not. Bah, you get what I'm trying to say.
"Watch where you're going, Eugene!"
Uh oh, I said the thing. Nobody calls Flash Euguene. Nobody.
Flash was appalled by this, now getting right in my face. "What did you say to me?"
"Did I stutter?" I told him, clearly not backing down. It's safe to say if something wasn't done soon, then a possible fight might break out on the first day. Coming in between us was MJ, who wanted to diffuse the situation.
"Okay, okay. That's enough." MJ told us both. "You guys really want to do this on the first day? You know Principal Coulson wouldn't be too happy about it."
"Principal Coulson?" I thought, but then it clicked. "Ohhhhh, that's who she means!"
Flash looked at MJ, and then back at me. As much as he hated to admit it, MJ had a point. "This isn't over, Parker." As he said this, he dramatically pointed at me, which actually made me wanna laugh. Eventually, Flash would walk away with his 'popular' crew.
Harry tilted his head at the whole thing, but there was one thing in particular he was surprised to see. "Hey Pete, when did you decide to start standing up to Flash?" he asked, clearly not expecting the newfound backbone.
I turned to Harry, and I showed him a smirk. I would give him a simple answer.
"Things have changed."
END OF CHAPTER 1: LIFE WILL CHANGE
BGM: Spider-Man TAS 1994 – Ending Theme
You: I'm still trying to get used to this… but I don't think I'm doing too bad.
MJ: What are you talking about, Peter?
You: Oh, uh… Nothing! Nothing at all!
Gwen: Guys! Pay attention in class!
Harry: Oh brother…
Next time on Breaking Canon!
The Journey Continues
Miles: The author needs to give me some lines in the next chapter!
Author's Note: So, what did you guys think? Of course, this is only the start, but I don't think it turned out too bad. Some very obvious references to certain things, but they were all made in good fun. Also, let's get this out of the way now. I know shipping is a big thing with self-insert fanfics. Heck, it's a big thing with any type of fanfic. I'm not really into the idea of this being a harem. This is just my personal opinion, but I've always found harems to be ridiculous, lol. I'm not saying it's an impossibility, but… *sigh* I'm trying to settle on a main love interest. Here's the list I came up with. This is in no particular order.
1: Mary Jane – Because she's Mary Jane. Yes, we all know it's been beaten to death at how Peter (In this case, you) and MJ are always meant to be together, but hey, I can't leave her out of this.
2: Gwen Stacy – Yes, the other iconic ship in the Spider-Man universe. She has to be here since she's Gwen.
3: Felicia Hardy/Black Cat – My personal favorite Spider-Man ship, but I don't know if she would be the main love interest here since I'm already doing a separate story with her and Peter being the main ship.
Now, aside from the usual three we all recognize, here's some more exotic choices.
4: Ava Ayala/White Tiger – This would be an interesting one, but I have no idea if I would do it. Shout out to all my Ultimate Spider-Man fans, though.
5: Angelica Jones/Firestar – Angelica has a lot of untapped potential as a character, in my opinion. This ship kinda intrigues me, but I still don't know if I would do it. Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, anybody?
6: Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow – Big fan of Black Widow. She's an option, but like Felicia, she's already playing the main love interest role in one of my other fanfics.
7: Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel – I'd imagine this would be fun just to see how I would try to write it.
8: Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel – I like Kamala as a character. I just have no idea how I would write the ship.
9: Liz Allan – Liz would be based on her Spectacular Spider-Man version.
10: Rogue – Rogue is one of my favorite characters, but once again, she's already the main love interest in another one of my fanfics.
11: Jean Grey – Well, for what it's worth, Spidey did kiss her in the comics.
12: Kitty Pryde – I'd imagine this would be a popular choice, seeing as when Spidey and Kitty were going out in the comics, it was generally a really well written (and well received) relationship.
13: Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch – Like the rest of these ships, this one is possible.
14: Storm – Storm is one of my favorite X-Men, so here she is.
15: Susan Storm/Invisible Woman – She's here, but I don't know if I would ship it.
16: Silver Sable – This list just keeps getting longer…
17: Silk/Cindy Moon – If I made her the main love interest, she would single handedly make me have to change this story's rating to M, lol.
18: Betty Brant – Shout out to Betty.
19: Elektra Natchios – Would be fun to write, to say the least.
20: Emma Frost – I like Emma, but this list keeps growing. Why am I doing this to myself?
21: Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman – Jessica is cool.
22: Psylocke – She's cool too.
23: She-Hulk – This list has to end eventually, right?
24: Medusa – Spidey and Medusa had a thing for each other in the 80's cartoon, so she's here too.
25: Jessica Jones – I like Jessica. Don't know if I would make her the main ship, but she's a cool character.
26: Anya Corazon - She would be based on her 2017 Spider-Man Animated Series version.
27: Gamora – Where is Gamora? Who's Gamora? Why is Gamora? You understood that reference, right?
Okay, I'll stop the list here. Lots of choices to choose from guys. Oh God, I may have started a shipping war in the reviews… Anyway, that's it. No more. Unless you want me to combine the DC Universe, which would make this list even longer- NO, NO, NO! I've already caused enough damage!
Okay, anyway, I need you guys to state your opinions on all the options. I can't promise I'll make a choice soon, but I want to choose a ship that'll ultimately help the story. Still, I want to hear your input, so feel free to say what you would like to see. If you're still here, and if you enjoyed what you read, LEAVE A FOLLOW AND A FAVORITE! Don't forget to READ AND REVIEW! See ya guys next time!
