Lee smiled as he saw Rosemary drawing styles of bathing suits in her portfolio. The recent opening of the Hope Springs had given his wife a renewed inspiration to design.
"Come look. I could use your feedback. I'm not sure about the color of this one for the man's suit. This one is for the ladies I am debating putting it on with this hat. Then you can see how you could wear an outfit as well to the springs." Rosemary showed the designs as he sat down next to her. For the next few minutes, they discussed the options for the designs.
"I had an idea for something we could give the baby. It is not something that you buy. So it would be something that we would have to do ourselves. It would be a big commitment." Lee said as he looked at Rosemary.
"Well, what is it?" Rosemary asked as she closed her portfolio book and looked at her husband.
"I would like each of us to write a letter to the baby. Then every year for their birthday we write another letter. We do this every year until a special milestone. It could be graduation from school, their wedding, or whatever we decide. We can write about anything we want. However, we don't read each other letters until our child decides to share them. That way it is personal and special just for our child."
Lee had thought about this since Rosemary had said she was pregnant. He knew what it was like to lose his parents at a young age. He wanted his child to have something special they could hold in their heart.
"Lee, that is so special. I can't even express how special of a gift that will be. You will be an amazing father. Every day I am always amazed by how loving and selfless you are. I love you." Rosemary leaned in kissing Lee.
Later that night
Rosemary decided to try writing a letter after Lee went to help Joseph. After her third attempt, she was starting to become frustrated. How could she express everything that she was feeling? Was it going to be too long or too short? How would it compare to Lee's letters? She moved into her bedroom and curled under her comforter. She already felt a little more relaxed as she began to write.
Dear little one,
I write this letter a bit unsure how to start as we await your arrival. Your daddy came up with a wonderful idea earlier today. Every year starting with this one before you arrive, we will each write you a letter for your birthday. I hope by the time you are reading this the box will be full of letters of the memories our family has created.
I want you to know how loved you already are. We had tried for years to have a baby, but I was never able to get pregnant. Now I understand that sometimes things don't come when we expect them to come.
We were waiting for you.
I don't know if you will be a boy or a girl. Honestly, I don't prefer either way. I wasn't sure at first when I was younger that I wanted to get married or have children. My dream was to be an actress in Hollywood or on Broadway. I did some performing in plays but nothing I will be remembered for.
Now my dream is you will remember me fondly. We will be extremely close, and you will always know how much I deeply love you.
You are my greatest legacy, little one.
You can do anything you dream of.
I hope you wait to find the true love of your life. The kind of love me and your daddy has.
I count the weeks, days, minutes, and seconds until I hold you in my arms.
I love you forever with all of my heart.
Mommy
