Chapter 13
Jane heard the noise of not one, but two cars.
"They are here." She alerted Maura.
It had only been five days since the last visit, and Jane and Maura were not counting on it.
Jane looked around and whatever suspicious evidence was around, there was no time to fix it. She grabbed her backpack and jumped from the bedroom window, the bat on her hand.
Two cars… What would that possibly mean? Was Maura in further danger and they needed to move her? Or could this be danger instead of Witsec? Or had Witsec found about Jane being here and were moving Maura again? If that happened, Jane knew she would have to backtrack to DC and tap on Dean again to find Maura's new location, and even that would be a stretch. Jane's heart was constricted with concern.
Jane waited, and Maura dropped a pan. So it was WitSec, in theory, since that was the agreed signal for that week.
After only half an hour, one of the cars left, but the other didn't.
Jane was concerned, trying to figure out what might have happened, when she heard Dean's voice and then saw Dean on the window of the bedroom: "Jane? You can come in now."
Jane left the bat against the house, just in case, and entered.
Maura was sitting by the sofa, and Dean was standing waiting for Jane. Jane immediately sat by Maura's side.
"What happened?" Jane asked, not in the friendliest way.
"Hello to you too, Jane… Your friend Dory Selsi is being transferred from WitSec to the Agency."
"Who is Dor… Oh…" Jane looked at Maura. Of course. Dory, from Dorothea. Selsi, Isles written backwards. She had to hold back her involuntary laughter or Maura would kill her.
"In theory, we have the mob heads arrested or killed. And I say in theory, because you both are smart enough to know there is always a third removed cousin ready to take over. And for all purposes, Maura here is the official heir of Paddy. But WitSec is releasing Dory from their protection."
"Does that mean I can go back to my life?" Maura asked, hopeful.
"You could, but I would not recommend that." Dean was stern.
Jane saw Maura almost disappear on the sofa, dejected.
"Why don't you take a seat, Dean, and explain to us what you do recommend, so then Dr. Isles here can make her own decision about her own life?"
Jane wanted to make sure that now that Maura was conscious and well, that she had a say on what was to be done of her life.
"Oh, Jane, how civilized of you… This is much better than trying to strangle me, then threatening me with a knife and then with a gun." He teased her, and Maura chuckled.
"Don't forget I have a 2x4 piece of wood outside and I can still beat the crap out of you if you don't tell us everything we need to know." Jane would not let it cheap. He had led her to believe for three entire weeks Maura was dead. And despite his help in getting them reunited, Jane would never be able to forgive him.
He sighed, sitting.
"Being totally honest, I don't think Boston will ever be safe for you, Maura. Someone will always remember. And you are the remaining heir. For all purposes, you are now Dory Selsi, and I have a driver's license, a bank account, credit card, cell phone and even a passport with all that information, besides a dossier with your cover history. The will of Maura Dorothea Isles has been fully executed as per your parents' instructions. The ownership of your house in Beacon Hill was transferred to Angela Rizzoli, as per your wishes. And all your fortune was transferred to Jane Rizzoli."
Jane looked at Maura, eyes wide.
"That was your will? Were you out of your mind?"
Dean was obviously amused.
"I defined my will that way long ago, Jane, after you saved me from Dennis Rockmond."
"Regardless of when you drafted it, Maura, it still does not make any sense…"
"You and your family were already my family back then. It does make perfect sense." Maura dismissed the comment as if it was nothing.
"It is actually perfect." Dean added. "Because the only person who knows you are alive is the person who holds power over all your money. And it is the same person who you always knew you could trust to put your interests even above her own." Dean added, praising Jane.
"Without any shadow of a doubt." Maura squeezed Jane's hand to reassure her.
"Keep going." Jane motioned Dean.
"So my recommendation is this: I drive you both back with me, we board a private FBI jet back to DC. Jane, who lives in DC, will buy tickets for the two of you to fly to France, so you can visit your parents and try not to give them a heart attack by showing up alive. While there, you should also spend time on a rehabilitation clinic to make up for lost time in the past two months. Jane flies back to DC and returns from her unpaid leave and resume her work. When Maura completes her rehabilitation in Europe, she flies back to DC, and reestablish herself in DC, always as Dory Selsi. Maybe find a job within the Agency. You both can drive to Boston. You can visit your old house where Jane's mom lives now. But you don't stay in Boston. You don't make it easy for them to follow your steps to DC. Soon, you could even fly to Boston. But you always come back to DC. And you keep as Dory Selsi."
Jane could see that from a standpoint of trying to fool any remaining Boston mob dissidence, this was a solid enough plan. But would Maura be willing to turn her back on Boston?
"So in this plan of yours Maura Isles remains dead?" Maura asked, uncertain.
"Mostly, yes. Only a few people of your choosing will know Maura is alive as Dory."
"What is the other option?" Jane inquired, not willing to have Dean steering Maura to a single option.
"We follow the process to cancel Maura's death and reinstate you as a living and breathing citizen of your own accord. We revert the execution of the wills, and all in all it would take about 2-3 months to be done. But that means everyone with a computer will be able to trace you no matter where you go from that moment on."
"Does she need to make a decision now?" Jane inquired, knowing this was too important a decision to be made lightly.
"No. Right now, the only thing you need to do is pack your stuff, because our private jet leaves in less than two hours to DC. From there, Maura, you decide what and when to do whatever is that you decide to do."
"How will you explain me on your jet?" Jane asked, suspiciously.
"I will say that I recruited you to meet me here so we could ease the 'subject' back into normal life."
Jane shook her head, and stood, squeezing Maura's hands. "I will pack our things."
"Except for the material for PT, Jane, there is nothing I want to take from here."
"Copy that." Jane knew Maura would like as much as possible to forget those almost two months of living in a limbo. Quickly Jane went around checking their things, separating what was to be discarded, what could be left in the house without consequence, and what they were going to take.
"All set." Jane confirmed.
"Let's go." Dean stood, helping Maura to her feet.
"Trust me, no matter how quickly we get out of here, it will never be quick enough." Maura muttered.
