Chapter 2: Homecoming with a Hatch
In the comfortable familiarity of their London home, Professor George Edward Challenger sat across from his wife, Jessie, cradling a seemingly innocent object wrapped in a heavy cloth. The silence in the room was heavy, charged with a weighty decision that hung in the air like a storm cloud.
"Jessie, think of it. A living proof of an era long lost, a testament to the marvels of the Lost World. The presentation would be..." he started, but his words were cut off by Jessie's stern gaze.
"George, have you stopped to think what Abigail and Veronica would say? They chose to protect that world, not to expose it." Jessie said, her voice steady but soft.
"But the world has a right to know, to understand," Challenger argued, his excitement making way for frustration.
"Does it, though? Or is it just your desire to be recognized, to be vindicated, that is driving this?" Jessie shot back. She took a deep breath, regaining her composure. "George, you are a great man, a great scientist. Your greatness doesn't hinge on fame and glory."
Challenger was taken aback, and the room fell into silence. The object he was holding suddenly felt heavy in his hands. He unwrapped the cloth slowly, revealing the large dinosaur egg that he smuggled back without the knowledge of his friends. Its marbled shell stared back at him. Prior to their return the group had collectively decided to keep the knowledge about the plateau's true nature a secret. To protect the place they had discovered, and the mysteries it held, they chose to tell the world that they were simply lost in the Amazon jungle during their expedition, masking the true nature of their discoveries. Challenger wasn't completely settled on this idea. He was deeply upset by the thought of keeping such significant knowledge hidden from the world.
Challenger was silent for a long moment, lost in thought. He had always craved recognition, the world's approval of his theories and discoveries. But Jessie's words struck a chord deep within him. Perhaps she was right. Maybe the Lost World was better left undisturbed. He let out a small sigh, placing the egg back into the cloth.
The conversation gradually shifted from the weighty issue of the illicit dinosaur egg to a lighter subject – their upcoming visit to the Roxton family Estate. John Roxton, the newly-titled Earl of Avebury, had extended an invitation for them to visit his ancestral estate. This wasn't just a casual visit though; he intended to organize a gathering, an event that carried significant implications.
Among the explorers who ventured to the Lost World, Marguerite Krux held the biggest aura of mystery. She grew up believing she was abandoned by her real family, unaware of her true destiny. It wasn't until later that she discovered the truth - she was kidnapped by Mordern when she was just a baby and her real family never willingly gave her up.
Abigail Layton, while chasing after Plateau's prophecy, had discovered Marguerite's real family many years ago, only to find that she had arrived too late. Marguerite had already been whisked away and removed from her birthright. Despite the heartbreaking discovery, Abigail found an unexpected friendship with Marguerite's family, a bond formed on a solemn vow - Marguerite would come home one day.
Now, that day was nearing, and Roxton was making arrangements for this long-awaited reunion.
In anticipation of the gathering, Challenger and Jessie planned a lunch with Marguerite, aiming to reconnect and prepare themselves for the emotional reunion ahead. In a few days, they would all travel together by train to Avebury. While the adventures of the Lost World were behind them, their journey was far from over, simply evolving into a different but equally captivating chapter on home soil.
