Chapter 8: A Moment of Truth
Korriban's lifeless surface filled the viewport as Zarael's ship dropped out of hyperspace. Taking a deep breath, he steeled himself for the confrontation ahead. There could be no going back now.
The amulet still hung around his neck, a cold weight over his heart - now inert but still a symbol of the past he hoped to leave behind. Its malevolent whispers had faded, but Zarael knew traces of its influence likely lingered within him. Casting it away for good would require facing his former master.
Touching down in the Valley of the Dark Lords, Zarael reached out with his feelings. In the towering citadel before him, a familiar swirling vortex of dark energy awaited - Darth Vexis.
Sneaking through black stone archways, Zarael followed the psychic trail like a tether, leading him toward a grand obsidian chamber. Vexis stood with his back turned, gazing out through a massive slit window at the mountains behind.
"I knew you would come, my apprentice," Vexis rasped without turning. "You can run from the darkness, but never for long."
Zarael steeled himself. "I have not come to rejoin you. I have come to find closure."
Vexis turned, pale eyes narrowing. Zarael felt subtle psychic tendrils try to insinuate themselves into his mind, but his defenses held.
"You have changed," Vexis whispered. "I sense...balance in you." He spat the last word. "You have betrayed the Sith and me utterly."
Zarael met his gaze calmly. "I walk a new path now. My path. Between light and dark. I seek only to make right what once went wrong."
With a snarl, Vexis seized the Force. Zarael raised his defenses just as a blast of power shattered the chamber windows. He refused to attack, instead channeling his old master's rage harmlessly around himself.
Finally Vexis lowered his hands, glaring but intrigued. Zarael saw a chance and took it. "It does not have to be this way. There is another path..."
But Vexis cut him off with a vengeful roar. "No! Your fate is sealed, apprentice!" He leapt forward, lightsaber igniting. Their blades locked in a hissing clash, but Zarael swiftly disarmed his old master with a subtle Force twist. Vexis stumbled back, incredulous and enraged.
Deactivating his lightsaber, Zarael removed the amulet from his neck and laid it on the stone floor. He met Vexis' gaze solemnly. "This no longer holds power over me. Goodbye, old master."
Turning, Zarael walked from the chamber without looking back. But before he could reach the door, he sensed a tremor in the Force. Whirling around, he saw Vexis summon the amulet to his hand with a telekinetic pull.
"You will always be mine!" the elder Sith spat, clutching the amulet tightly. His veins bulged and his eyes turned bloodshot as he channeled the artifact's power. Dark tendrils erupted toward Zarael, who quickly threw up a Force barrier to deflect them.
Vexis' voice distorted into a demonic roar. "I made you everything you are! You cannot defy me!" He unleashed a barrage of Force lightning, but Zarael caught it on his lightsaber, the energy crackling harmlessly away.
Calmly, Zarael shook his head. "My destiny is my own now." Calling upon the balanced Force within him, he telekinetically ripped the amulet from Vexis' grasp. It tumbled through the air into Zarael's waiting hand.
Vexis let out a howl of impotent rage. But freed from the artifact's malevolent influence, he could only watch as Zarael closed his fist and crushed the amulet into glittering dust. Its dark power was destroyed forever.
"Farewell, old master," Zarael said with finality. Vexis' hatred could no longer touch him. Striding purposefully from the chamber, the weight of the past slipped fully from the former apprentice's shoulders.
On the landing platform, Zarael breathed deeply of the dry desert air. Korriban's oppressive darkness could vex him no more - he had found closure. Now, as he boarded his ship to depart into the stars once more, his path ahead was clear. The light and dark sides of the Force were his to command.
