It was completely unexpected. Unexpected and absolutely tragic. Harper had been there, and took it upon herself to, at the very least, tell Jesse the about it. At least before she left to find somewhere to escape Beacontown and be alone.
It was evening, shortly before dark when she arrived at Jesse's small house, located behind the orders hall.
Harper shuffled up to Jesse's porch, having her hood pulled up to cover how much of a mess she was at the moment. Warm light was shining from one of Jesse's front windows, casting onto the porch, letting Harper know she was home.
Harper took a deep breath, trying not to hiccup as tears slid down her face. She raised her fist to the door and let out three pathetic knocks, her jaw clenched as she tried to prepare herself to speak.
"Hang on, give me a quick sec! I'll be right there!" Jesse shouted. Harper could hear her fumbling around, and it sounded like she must have tripped on her way to the door. Jesse reached to the door, twisting the nob and opened it, greeting Harper with a friendly smile.
"Harper! Hey it's so good to see you! I wasn't expecting any company tonight, but feel free to come on in." Jesse said, opening the door wider. The light from inside the house shined onto Harper, she ducked her head to the side, desperately trying to muster the words she came here to say.
"Woah, hey are you alright Harper?" Jesse asked, alarmed. "Are you hurt anywhere, is everything ok?" Jesse said urgently, rushing to Harpers side.
"I-I..." Harper tried, doing her best to ignore the pain in her throat as she attempted to speak. She felt a hand on her shoulder, looking up she saw Jesse looking at her with concern. Harper took a deep breath, and glanced off to the distance.
"Ivor's ... gone... He- he died." Harper spoke, letting out a choked sob, refusing to look at Jesse.
Jesse froze. She suddenly felt extremely numb, an old unwelcome familiar feeling of shock and grief washed over her in an instant. Suddenly she couldn't hear anything, and everything started to look so blurry. Her hand slid off of Harpers shoulder, falling to her side.
"What?" Jesse whispered, hoping she just heard Harper wrong. "What- how? Ivor can't be-" She suddenly choked, tears slid down her face. "dead..."
Harper slowly looked up, seeing how distraught and upset the hero had become, breaking her heart all over again. She reached out and gave Jesse a comforting hug, while Jesse, in turn, took a moment to process what was happening. When she finally registered Harper's hug, she returned it like her life depended on it, quietly crying.
Harper and Jesse stayed like that for a little while, trying to process this together...
Ivor had meant a lot to Jesse, despite how rocky things had been when they first had met. Over the years he had become like an older mentor to her and her friends, teaching her so many cool facts about their world and useful life skills. He was their friend, a crazy, funny, and chaotic wise man, who helped save their lives. (The orders sensei Wu if you will) He made them laugh and groan in the best and worst of times, becoming such an important person in their lives.
Ivor was a lot, but now he was gone... And they'd never see him again.
It was late by the time Harper left Jesse's house. After their hug they had both gone inside, keeping each other company for a little while longer. Harper explained what had happened to Ivor, that he had suddenly started showing signs of an unknown sickness, and that before they could even reach out to anyone, he had rapidly gotten worse. They didn't know what happened or what was wrong. It happened so fast, they barley had much time to even comprehend what was going on. Before she knew it, he died... and there was nothing she could have done to save him.
"How long ago did this... happen?" Jesse asked quietly.
"This morning... It happened this morning." Harper whispered, sitting on the couch next to Jesse.
Jesse looked gloomed, upset that she couldn't have even gotten to say goodbye. She'd later become mad at herself for that, taking time to herself after Harper had left. She wasn't sure if she'd ever see Harper again, thinking clearly was kinda hard at the moment, and she wasn't sure how long this feeling of numb pain would last. She was still in shock, adrenaline still hadn't left her.
Harper had let her know that she was going to leave Beacontown, not sure yet of where she was going, just that she knew she needed to get away.
Jesse let her, not yet realizing that would mean she's be the only one in town who could let her and Ivor's other friends know of his untimely demise. The responsibility was on her now.
( Authors note: )
I just found out about the death of Ivors voice actor, Paul Rueben today... I was not expecting that, and feel sad to know he's gone. I love the work he did on MCSM, and am still kinda in shock that he's actually gone. Don't really have the words to say right now, but I thought of starting a little story with his character, since his character played such a fun role in my childhood humor growing up.
