Summary: With no way to destroy the Shikon no Tama, Kagome became the unlucky guardian of the cursed jewel. She's the only one capable of keeping it locked in its dormant state. It's not what she imagined, but at least life's far from dull. Though, she could do without the first years thinking she's Gojo's wife- a misunderstanding she entirely blamed him for.

Pairing: Gojo/Kagome

Prologue

The sound of rain pounding against the window pulled her from the book she had been flipping through. A frown marred her face, and she stood to walk to the window. With a sigh, she tugged it so it would close. As she latched it closed, she let blue eyes scan the shrine grounds below. It was peaceful, she could feel the holy energy burrow into her skin. It was akin to her own- some of it was her own. The natural holy energy the shrine possessed was comforting, however. She let her gaze wander to the Goshinboku, a warm smile highlighting her youthful face. It was the primary source of the holy energy, acting like a beacon for all who could sense it.

It was home. It'd always be home, especially to her. No matter how far she went, that energy was absorbed so deep in her own veins.

Her attention strayed from the tree of ages, shifting to the old wooden building that also happened to be located on the grounds. Her expression contorted as a complicated feeling bloomed in her chest. The cursed energy it radiated wasn't as strong as it was when she was fifteen, when it was active, but that didn't mean she couldn't feel it anymore. No, it was still there. Subdued, restrained, just like how it should remain.

As strange as it was, it too provided her with an odd sense of tranquility. She'd sealed it when her presence in the past was no longer needed, knowing it was for the best. Her own energy was tied to it, binding it closed. It wasn't as tainted as it once was. No, a glimpse of light was shining through the darkness, a sign of her presence.

She sighed and shook her head. At the thought of the well and cursed items, her attention strayed to the pink bauble around her neck. It was forever a part of her, just as much as her own history was.

The Shikon no Tama. A relic of the past that would probably be better off forgotten to time. No, it would be for the better if that were the case, but things were so simple. They never were.

She slipped a slender finger under the string it was bound to. Twine infused with a lock of her hair to strengthen the hold. She peered at it, blue eyes shining with uncertainty.

A cursed item such as the jewel was dangerous. What it was capable of, the history it had… It would be for the best if it were simply destroyed. It wasn't just her who had that notion, either. Yet, such a thing wasn't possible, it seemed. Since she was the only one with the power to suppress its own, that left it in her capable hands for guarding it. It was a heavy weight on her shoulders, but one only she could bear. Even though she desperately wanted to reject it, to plant her feet firmly and decide her own fate in the aftermath of the terror it's caused, she couldn't do that.

It was dormant under her energy, and that was as good as it'd be, it seemed. It wasn't ideal, but it was enough.

She let her grip on the jewel fall, and it fell back beneath the collar of her haori. Kagome made her way back to the desk, sinking down in her chair once more. From the corner of her eye, a framed picture caught her attention. With a sigh, she rested her chin in her palm as she gazed at it, the book wholly forgotten by her by now.

"..." Looking at it, she realized just how long it'd been since the photo had been taken in the first place. Her hair now reached down past her knees, but in the photo in question, it reached just past her shoulder blades. The second person in the photo… it felt like so long since she'd last seen him, and a somber feeling spread through her chest. Her heart grew heavy.

Her older brother. Despite the difference in their height and build, he was only several minutes older than her.

Despite how she was so focused on the photo, she wasn't so distracted that she missed the familiar aura that came to join her in the solitude of her room. She turned in her seat after a few seconds, and she sent the intruder a friendly smile.

Leaning against her wall was a man with white hair and dazzling blue eyes. Perched in his hairline was his favorite pair of dark glasses. Draped over his folded arms was a bag, the contents of it lost on her for the time being.

"Satoru," she said, slowly rising to her feet and turning her back to her desk. "What perfect timing," she chimed brightly. "I was just about to take a break as it is."

"I was hoping you'd say that," he responded with a smile. As he did, he stepped away from her wall to approach her. Kagome closed the book that she'd been going over earlier, not bothering to move it from where it resided after the cover settled.

She didn't turn back to him right away. Once again, her gaze settled on the photo situated on her desk. That same feeling from before resurfaced. Perhaps it was mirrored on her face, the way she felt on the inside, because it was a few seconds later that her companion searched out what held her attention. No words were exchanged between them, but that didn't bother her.

"Suguru-nii."

"Let's head downstairs," she said as she turned to face him once more. She left for the door, leaving him to follow behind.

They were soon seated at the table in the dining room. The building around them was silent. The shrine had become empty in the past few years with the shrine falling into her name. Fondness for her home always called her there. When she wanted a break, this is where she went. It's no wonder he found her so easily there.

"So, when do you think this break will be over?"

Kagome glanced at him. He sat with his chin resting on his palm as he gazed at her from the other side of the table. She sighed and shook her head. "I'm gonna leave tomorrow," she responded. Her time away had been nice, but she could only stay for so long. "I feel bad for just kinda up and leaving you as I did," she admitted, an apologetic tone bleeding into her gentle voice.

"Eh, you go awol all the time," he responded. "Drives the elders crazy, but you're you. What can anyone do?"

Kagome nodded. His response made her feel a bit better about her sudden choice to leave, but only a little. "You could've gotten me earlier if it was a problem," she stated, and he nodded.

"Yeah, but there wasn't a problem," he said with a smile. "Now when you get back, we'll have a brand new first year."

Kagome felt her smile melt back onto her face.

"It'll be good to go back, then."
