Chapter 8 - Lessons
The morning sun poured through the enchanted ceiling of the Great Hall, warming the long tables filled with students. Severus Snape and Cassiopeia Black, two Slytherin first years, were seated across from each other at the far end of their House table, plates piled high with food.
Cassiopeia was picking at her eggs, her face brightening as she recounted her first night in the Slytherin common room. "The common room is quite lovely, don't you think, Severus?" she asked, her soft voice barely audible above the clamor of the Great Hall. "I especially love the way the light from the lake plays on the ceiling."
Severus, his plate almost empty, nodded. "I enjoyed the quiet," he replied, his voice slightly guarded as he glanced around the hall. "It was... peaceful."
"What class do you think we'll be having first?" Cassiopeia asked. Severus started, "I hope it's—"
Their conversation was interrupted by a sudden burst of gasps and exclamations from the staff table. Turning in unison, they watched in amusement as one by one, the professors' hair began to change color, cycling through an array of rainbow hues.
Professor McGonagall's neat bun became a vibrant red before shifting to a sunny yellow, while Professor Trelawney's few strands of hair became a shocking pink. Even the stern Professor Slughorn wasn't exempt, his hair turning a deep shade of violet.
The hall erupted in laughter, the spectacle too absurd to ignore. But the loudest laughter came from the Gryffindor table. Severus and Cassiopeia followed the sound to find James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and a fourth boy they didn't recognize, all laughing and clapping each other on the back.
"Seems like the Gryffindors have already started with their pranks," Cassiopeia murmured, a faint smile playing on her lips. She didn't sound angry, just mildly amused.
Severus snorted, shaking his head. "And it's only the second day," he said, his gaze lingering on James.
FLASHBACK
Severus Snape woke up on his second day at Hogwarts, his mind still fuzzy from sleep. As he got ready and made his way towards the Great Hall, he couldn't help but feel a mixture of anticipation and nervousness. It was in that moment, as he stepped through the grand doors and into the bustling hall, that he spotted James Potter waiting for him.
Severus' heart skipped a beat as he locked eyes with James, who was beaming at him. James's warm smile melted away any lingering apprehension Severus had. Without hesitation, James walked up to him and pulled him into a tight hug, surprising Severus with the gesture.
"Good morning, Sev!" James greeted him, his voice filled with genuine affection. "I hope you slept well. I couldn't wait to see you today."
Severus blushed, feeling a mixture of delight and embarrassment at James's open display of affection. He mumbled a shy "Good morning" in response, his heart fluttering.
"I couldn't hold back my excitement last night," James continued, his eyes sparkling. "I wrote a letter to my parents, telling them all about our soulmate bond. They're going to be thrilled and they will probably ask you to come to our house during the holidays. You'll love them, I promise."
Severus felt a surge of warmth in his chest at the thought of meeting James's parents and being welcomed into his family. But a sudden realization dawned upon him, Severus couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness.
James came from a loving family—a world of warmth and acceptance. Their approval was something to be cherished. However, Severus' own family was a different matter entirely. His parents, particularly his father, were far from loving or supportive. The weight of his family situation pressed heavily on Severus' shoulders. He worried about what James would think? Would he be disappointed? Severus couldn't bear the thought of James looking down on him for the circumstances he was born into.
In his mind's eye, Severus pictured James' face, filled with compassion and understanding. But the nagging doubt persisted—would James truly comprehend the complexities of Severus' family situation? Would he be able to see past the cracks in Severus' past and the hardships that had shaped him?
But the fear of disappointment held him back, a barrier between them. Severus knew he couldn't change his past. He couldn't rewrite the painful chapters of his life or erase the scars that marked his soul. As he closed his eyes, Severus vowed to be honest with James when the time was right.
On the other hand, without waiting for a response from Severus, James took him by the waist, his touch both possessive and comforting. Severus Snape found himself caught up in James Potter's whirlwind of energy and charm. He had never expected to be pulled along at such a pace. He had always been a reserved and solitary individual, and this newfound closeness with James was both exhilarating and terrifying.
They reached the red and gold table of Gryffindor and it stood in all its glory. Severus hesitated, realizing that he had unintentionally followed James to his table. With a sudden rush of self-awareness, Severus became acutely aware of the gazes directed towards them.
"James," Severus whispered, his voice barely audible above the chatter around them. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to intrude. I think I should join my own table for today."
James turned to face him, his hazel eyes staring at Severus for a while, searching, then he smiled warmly, his hand gently resting on Severus' arm. "Okay! No problem, we'll catch up later."
Severus felt a mixture of relief and disappointment at James' response. He nodded gratefully, appreciating James' acceptance of his desire for solitude. As he started to turn away, James surprised him with a gentle kiss on the cheek.
"See you later, Sev!" James said playfully, a mischievous twinkle in his eyes.
A blush crept onto Severus' cheeks as he turned to leave, his heart beating a little faster. He couldn't deny the flutter of excitement that James' affectionate gesture stirred within him. Severus found himself looking forward to their next encounter, eager to explore the depths of their connection.
As he made his way towards the Slytherin table, Severus glanced back at James, who was already chatting animatedly with his Gryffindor friends. Their eyes met for a moment, a silent understanding passing between them. Severus smiled softly, a newfound warmth blossoming within him.
END OF FLASHBACK
"Earth to Severus… Ahem, ahem, hullo?" Cassiopeia waved her hands in front of the boy who was clearly lost in his own thoughts. "Fancy a Gryffindor?" A smirk playing on her lips.
Severus, stunned into embarrassment, quickly replied, "No! I- I was just, just wondering when we'll get our syllabus.." he finished lamely.
"Uh huh, okay. I'll pretend I didn't see you eating Potter with your eyes." Cassiopeia teased. She watched as Severus banged his head into the table. Merlin, save me, thought Severus.
As they turned back to their breakfast, the professors attempting to reverse their rainbow hairstyles, the Slytherin first years shared a look of understanding. They'll have to be careful with the new Gryffindor students, as they didn't want to be on the receiving end of their pranks.
The air in the grand halls of Hogwarts was filled with an exciting mix of nerves and anticipation, as the throngs of first-year students bustled through the corridors, adjusting to their new surroundings. Cassiopeia Black, a striking figure with her dark hair and piercing eyes, was strolling alongside a slightly smaller boy, Severus Snape. Both were adorned in the green and silver of their newly assigned house, Slytherin, and the pride of their house was very much evident in their demeanor.
Their first class, Transfiguration, had been a whirlwind of emotions. Professor McGonagall's stern demeanor had been a bit daunting, but they had both managed to turn their matchsticks into needles after a few tries. Charms, with the Hufflepuffs, was a bit more lighthearted, thanks to Professor Flitwick's cheerful teaching style. They both had enjoyed the levitation spell, although it took some time to get the feather to float for more than a few seconds.
The duo then ventured to the greenhouses for Herbology. The Hufflepuff students were already there, busily tending to a variety of magical plants. The sight of them working so diligently made Cassiopeia smile, while Severus watched in quiet fascination.
As they walked towards their last class of the day, History of Magic with Professor Binns, they exchanged thoughts about their shared experiences.
"I must say, I quite enjoyed Charms," said Cassiopeia, her voice soft yet clear. "And Transfiguration wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be."
"True, but I found Herbology more interesting," replied Severus, his tone quiet but firm. "There's something about these magical plants that intrigues me."
They continued their conversation, discussing the classes they had yet to attend. Potions and Defense Against the Dark Arts were on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.
"Potions with the Gryffindors, I wonder what that's going to be like," Cassiopeia mused, arching an eyebrow.
Severus managed a small smile. "As long as they don't blow anything up, it should be fine."
Their talk was interrupted by the tolling of a bell, indicating the start of their next class. With a mutual nod, they headed into the classroom, ready for yet another magical experience at Hogwarts.
Professor Binns, the ghostly History of Magic teacher, had a reputation for being somewhat dry in his teaching style. However, when a muggleborn student raised a hand and asked about soul mate bonds, even he seemed to perk up a bit.
"Soul mate bonds," he began, his ghostly voice echoing in the near-silent room, "are sacred ancient magic passed down to wizarding blood. This magic activates when a magical person turns eleven years old, at the point when the mana core inside the body becomes stable."
The students jotted down notes as he continued, "At this time, a symbol appears on the skin, specifically on the forearm. Each symbol is unique to each person. However, when two people bear matching symbols, they are destined to be soul mates."
The room buzzed with whispers, and Binns paused, allowing the students to absorb this new information. He resumed speaking, "This ancient magic binds two people together, creating an unbreakable connection between their souls. Matching these symbols is a momentous occasion, a rite of passage within the wizarding world."
Binns then started to discuss the stages of the soul binding ancient magic. "Despite the prevalence of these bonds, there is little information on the stages of soul binding, due to the rarity of matching soulmates."
He detailed the stages, "The first stage is the sealing of the bond, where the soul mates can slowly begin to feel each other's emotions. The second stage involves shared dreams. Soul mates can communicate in these shared dreams if they wish to do so. This is likely related to Legilimency, as their mental Occlumency shields will be connected."
A few students looked confused, but Binns didn't pause, continuing on to the third stage. "The third stage involves a physical transformation. This can result in a male being able to carry a child, a phenomenon known as male pregnancy. This ancient magic ensures that soulmates, regardless of their physical limitations, are able to continue their bloodlines."
At this, the classroom erupted into whispers and excited murmurs. The idea of soul bonds was fascinating and the students were eager to learn more.
As Professor Binns continued explaining the stages of the soul mate bond, the class was held in rapt attention. Everyone was fascinated, but none more so than Severus Snape and Cassiopeia Black. They sat side by side, their green Slytherin ties standing out starkly against the white of their shirts.
Severus, usually so composed, was visibly shaken. His usual pallor seemed to have faded to an even whiter shade as the Professor described the third stage of the bond. His dark eyes widened in shock and he swallowed hard, his mind spinning at the concept. The idea that he, a male, could potentially carry a child if he were part of such a bond was... mind-boggling. And oh my merlin, he is! With James. BLOODY. Potter!
He struggled to wrap his head around the concept, his mind churning with a whirl of thoughts and emotions. He was smart, and he understood what Binns was saying, but understanding and accepting were two different things. He was grappling with the potential reality of the situation, and it was like nothing he had ever imagined.
Next to him, Cassiopeia was also deeply affected, but in a different way. Her eyes were shining with a mix of awe and intellectual curiosity. To her, the concept of the soul mate bond was nothing short of magnificent. She found the ancient magic to be a testament to the limitless possibilities of their world, a world that was already filled with such incredible magic.
"Ancient magic, forcing nature to adapt in such a way... it's incredible," she murmured, mostly to herself, but her words caught Severus' attention. He turned to her, his face still ashen, and she gave him a reassuring smile, her hand gently patting his arm.
"It's a lot to take in, yes," she said softly, "But it's not something we need to worry about now. It's rare, after all."
Severus nodded slowly, taking a deep breath. But there was no denying it, the knowledge of the soul mate bond and its potential implications had irrevocably altered his perspective on the magical world.
The rest of the class went by in a whirl of notes, questions about Occlumency and Legilimency, answers, and explanations, making it one of the more memorable lessons in Professor Binns' class.
