Chapter 10 - Friend of Foe?
Cassiopeia's POV
Once the empty classroom door closed behind Andromeda, Cassiopeia was left with a whirlwind of thoughts swirling in her mind. She couldn't believe what she had just been told. Andromeda was in love with a muggleborn, something that would surely tear her family apart if they ever found out.
Cassiopeia's heart ached for her cousin. She had always admired Andromeda's strength and independence, and now she understood the weight that her cousin carried on her shoulders. With each passing moment, it became clearer to Cassiopeia that she too had a role to play in all of this.
Determined to help Andromeda and her lover, Cassiopeia began brainstorming. The rising dark lord that her cousin had mentioned was another troubling factor. Though it was just rumors at the moment, who knows when it could escalate into something greater. Cassiopeia knew she couldn't ignore the danger that lurked in the shadows.
As she stood in the empty classroom, Cassiopeia's mind quickly strategized. She thought of forming alliances with other like-minded students, those who valued love and acceptance over pureblood supremacy. With their collective strength, they could work together to ensure the safety of Andromeda's lover and thwart the dark lord's plans.
Cassiopeia was aware that she couldn't do this alone. She needed to involve her twin brother, Sirius. Together, they could be a formidable force against the darkness that threatened to consume their world. Cassiopeia knew that Sirius, with his Gryffindor courage, would never back down from a fight.
Taking a deep breath, Cassiopeia left the classroom, her mind resolved and her heart set on protecting her family and those she cared about. She would be a beacon of hope in the midst of turmoil, using her intelligence and cunning to navigate the treacherous waters that lay ahead.
As she walked the halls of Hogwarts, Cassiopeia couldn't help but feel the weight of her moral ambiguity. She would be treading the fine line between right and wrong, using whatever means necessary to achieve her goals. The path ahead was uncertain, but she knew that she had the strength and determination to face whatever challenges awaited her.
From that moment forward, Cassiopeia Black embraced her role as a protector. She would ensure that Andromeda and her lover could be together, despite the obstacles that stood in their way. And as she looked out at the Hogwarts grounds, Cassiopeia pledged to herself that she would never let the darkness consume her, no matter how morally gray her actions may become.
Sirius' POV
On the third morning of their first year at Hogwarts, Sirius Black was sitting at the Gryffindor table with his dorm mates, finishing up their breakfast. James, Remus, and Chance were engrossed in opening their letters from home, eager to see what news awaited them. Sirius, however, couldn't help but keep an eye out for the arrival of the post owls.
His keen eyes caught sight of his family owl, Izar, flying towards the Slytherin table. Dropping off a letter for his twin sister, Cassiopeia, Izar quickly took off again. Sirius's heart sank as he realized that his own letter was about to arrive. He glanced nervously at his friends, who were already engrossed in their own correspondence.
Finally, the barn owl carrying the dreaded red envelope appeared, making a beeline straight towards Sirius. Time seemed to slow down as the owl flew closer, and with each moment, his anxiety grew. As the owl landed gracefully in front of him, it dropped the howler and quickly departed.
Sirius's stomach churned as he reached for the howler, his friends looking on with concern. The hesitation in his eyes was evident as he propped it open with trembling hands. Taking a deep breath, Sirius braced himself for what was to come. A surge of anger and disappointment filled the Great Hall as his mother's voice erupted from the letter, amplified by the magic contained within. The once cheerful ambiance was instantly transformed into an uncomfortable silence, as if everyone could hear the sharp words being hurled at him.
"You think you can just be a Gryffindor, do you?" his mother's voice boomed, her words cutting through the air like icy daggers. "How dare you taint our pureblood lineage by associating with such uncultured creatures! Gryffindor is not fit for someone of your stature and heritage!"
As the matriarch's voice echoed in his ears, Sirius couldn't help but feel a mix of anger and defiance welling up inside him. This was not the first time he had faced his mother's wrath, and he had expected nothing less when the red envelope arrived. Determination flickered in his stormy eyes, a silent vow forming in his mind.
With an apologetic smile to his fellow students, Sirius raised his voice above his mother's shrieks, trying to alleviate the tension in the air. "Sorry, everyone! Seems like my dear mother is having a bit of a disagreement with my life choices. Please carry on!"
To his surprise, instead of the judgment and scorn he feared, his friends rallied around him. James, Remus, and Chance laughed, their support evident, reminding Sirius that he wasn't alone. Their understanding and encouragement resonated within him, drowning out the hurtful words from the howler.
And so, standing tall with a newfound determination, Sirius let out a genuine laugh. The letter now a distant concern, he knew where he belonged. Gryffindor was his home, and no amount of howlers or family expectations could change that. With his friends by his side, he would weather any storm that came his way.
Cassiopeia's POV
As the morning sun cast gentle rays through the Great Hall windows, Cassiopeia Black sat at the Slytherin table, her dark wavy hair cascading over her shoulders. She had just finished opening the letters from her younger brother, Regulus, and her parents. A small smile played on her lips as she read her brother's familiar words, finding comfort in the connection to her family. Sirius receiving a howler was also expected. She knew Sirius wasn't going to get deterred by another one of mothers outbursts, so she wasn't that worried about it.
But her moment of solitude was interrupted when Rabastan Lestrange, the second son of the notable Lestrange family, approached her. Curiosity mixed with a hint of caution flickered in Cassiopeia's dark stormy eyes as she watched him. Rabastan, tall and imposing, had an air of importance about him.
"Miss Cassiopeia Black," Rabastan began, the manners and customs of his pureblood upbringing was evident. His voice carried a sense of authority as he motioned towards the castle grounds. "Might I request a moment of your time? There is something I wish to discuss with you."
Cassiopeia arched an eyebrow, her polite facade slightly crumbling under her curiosity. She nodded and rose from her seat, following Rabastan out of the castle towards the forbidden forest.
Being already knowledgeable about the Lestrange family from her cousin Bellatrix, Cassiopeia was aware of the reputation they upheld. She held herself cautiously as they walked, glancing around at the dense trees and feeling a surge of apprehension. What did Rabastan Lestrange want from her?
As they reached a secluded spot, Rabastan turned to face Cassiopeia, his piercing gaze fixed upon her. "Miss Black, I felt it necessary to confront you about a matter of concern." His voice dripped with a mix of arrogance and underlying bitterness.
Raising an eyebrow, Cassiopeia crossed her arms, her doll-like figure displaying an air of poise. "And what might that be, Mr. Lestrange?" she asked, her voice laced with a hint of amusement.
Rabastan seemed to hesitate for a moment before continuing, his voice filled with warning. "I suggest you distance yourself from Severus Snape. He's nothing but a bad influence, and as pureblood Slytherins, we should hold ourselves to a higher standard."
Cassiopeia's stormy eyes flashed with irritation, her patience wearing thin. How dare Rabastan speak ill of someone she held respect for? "Mr. Lestrange," she began, her tone firm, "I believe you overstep your boundaries in making such assumptions about my associations. Severus Snape is an intelligent and capable individual, and I refuse to take advice from someone who knows nothing about him."
Rabastan's surprise was evident in his eyes as Cassiopeia scolded him, cutting off his ability to continue his lecture. An unspoken tension filled the air as they stood face to face.
Before Rabastan had a chance to respond, Cassiopeia took a step back, her voice dripping with a mix of sarcasm and dismissal. "I suggest you mind your own business, Mr. Lestrange. As for any future plans, do not concern yourself with them. I will make my own choices."
With those words hanging in the air, Cassiopeia turned on her heel and strode away from Rabastan, her confidence unyielding. She had no time for those who sought to interfere with her life and ambitions. As she walked away, a small smile formed on her lips, a fierce determination glinting in her eyes.
As Cassiopeia walked back towards the castle, her curiosity piqued when she noticed a small hut near the outskirts of the Forbidden Forest. She heard a few senior students talking about how there was a staff in Hogwarts who lived in a hut and loved magical creatures. As a fellow lover of beasts, she couldn't help but be drawn towards it. Approaching cautiously, she noticed the Keeper of Keys, Hagrid, feeding a playful puppy.
Intrigued, Cassiopeia stepped forward, catching Hagrid's attention. "Excuse me, I couldn't help but notice the adorable puppy. I'm Cassiopeia Black, but you can call me Cassy. Are you the Keeper of Keys?"
Hagrid turned towards her and smiled warmly. "That's right, Cassy. Nice t'meet ya. I'm Rubeus Hagrid, but everyone just calls me Hagrid. And this 'ere is Fang, my loyal companion."
Cassiopeia's eyes twinkled with excitement as she kneeled down to greet the puppy. "Hello there, Fang! You're a lucky pup to have Hagrid as your owner."
Hagrid chuckled heartily, his eyes filled with a gentle fondness. "Aye, he's me best mate, he is. So, Cassy, what brings ya here?"
"Well, Hagrid, I couldn't resist the sight of a magical creature lover like yourself," Cassiopeia replied, her voice warm with admiration. "I, too, have always been fascinated by creatures of the magical world."
Hagrid's eyes widened with delight. "Is that so? Well, Cassy, yer in the right place then. I've got all sorts of creatures to show ya, if yer interested."
Cassiopeia's heart fluttered with excitement. She never expected to find such a kindred spirit so quickly. "I would love that, Hagrid! I can't wait to learn more about the magical creatures."
Their conversation flowed seamlessly as they discussed various creatures, sharing anecdotes and knowledge. However, their bond was interrupted when Hagrid suddenly turned towards the corner of his hut, a frown etched on his face. "Who's there?"
Cassiopeia followed his gaze and noticed a girl from her shared classes with the Hufflepuffs. She couldn't shake off the feeling that something was amiss as she realized the girl was surreptitiously observing them. What caught her attention even more was that the girl's gaze was fixed on her, not Hagrid.
Curiosity mixed with caution, Cassiopeia approached the girl, her voice holding a hint of suspicion. "Pardon me, but may I ask why you've been watching us so intently? Is there something you need?"
The Hufflepuff girl hesitated for a moment before stammering an excuse. "Oh, um... I, uh, was just curious about Hagrid's hut and wanted to see if there was anything interesting happening. I'm Elaine Addams by the way! Sorry for intruding."
Cassiopeia's eyes narrowed, her intuition telling her there was more than meets the eye. "I see… Elaine. Well, it's best not to pry into others' business. However, I would appreciate it if you didn't make a habit of watching us like a stalker."
The girl blushed and shifted uncomfortably under Cassiopeia's intense gaze. "I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. I'll make sure to respect your privacy."
Accepting Elaine's apology, Cassiopeia turned back to Hagrid, her eyes still holding a trace of wariness. "Hagrid, I believe we were discussing magical creatures. Shall we continue?"
Hagrid nodded, his trust in Cassiopeia evident. "Aye, Cassy. We've got plenty to explore and learn together."
With a renewed enthusiasm, Cassiopeia and Hagrid resumed their conversation, leaving the Hufflepuff to herself.
The warm sunlight filtered through the evergreen leaves in the Hogwarts grounds, casting a dappled pattern on the grass. Cassiopeia Black, or 'Cassy' as she preferred to be called, was engaged in a lively conversation with Hagrid about the various magical creatures he was caring for. Her dark eyes sparkling with interest, she listened carefully as Hagrid described the peculiar habits of a baby Hippogriff.
Suddenly, her attention was drawn away by a quiet voice.
"Uhm, Cassy? Cassiopeia? Could I have a word with you?"
Cassiopeia turned to see Elaine Addams standing slightly awkwardly a few feet away. The blonde Hufflepuff was biting her lip nervously, her green eyes filled with an intense expression. Cassiopeia felt a pang of curiosity. Wondering why she returned, Cassiopeia decided to give her a chance of doubt.
"Sure, and Cassy is fine," Cassiopeia said, offering Hagrid an apologetic smile. "We'll continue later, Hagrid."
She followed Elaine as they walked towards the black lake. A gentle breeze rustled the trees, carrying with it the scent of the lake and the faint murmur of water against the shore.
Elaine was quiet for a long moment before she spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "I...I need to tell you something. I'm a Seer."
Cassiopeia blinked in surprise, her dark eyes narrowing slightly. She had heard of Seers, of course, but she could hardly believe that the nervous girl in front of her claimed to be one.
"I know it sounds unbelievable," Elaine continued, her gaze meeting Cassy's. "I've been following you because I had a vision. It... it involves you."
Cassiopeia felt a chill run down her spine. She didn't know whether to believe her or not. Elaine seemed sincere, but the idea was just too far-fetched.
"I...I can't tell you what the vision is until we find a safer place to discuss," Elaine said, her voice trembling slightly. "But I can prove that I'm a Seer."
Elaine took a deep breath before she continued. "Your soul mark symbol…. It's a wolf's head on your right forearm."
Cassy's heart skipped a beat. How could Elaine know about her soul mark? She had always kept it hidden, revealing it to no one except her twin brother Sirius and her younger brother Regulus.
"And... and your destined person..." Elaine trailed off, biting her lip nervously. "You already know who it is, don't you?"
As the words hung in the air, Elaine's gaze met Cassy's, filled with a depth of sincerity that left no room for doubt. The scene faded as Cassy grappled with this revelation, her mind spinning with questions and the tantalizing hint of destinies intertwined.
