It wasn't a normal day at Firehouse 51. Then again, it never was a normal day. Something unusual always popped up, whether it be an interesting call or an event of some sort. But that day, it was particularly unusual. Violet Mikami died that day.
Paramedic Field Chief Evan Hawkins was making his rounds around the paramedics in his district. He'd be lying, however, if he said that Firehouse 51 wasn't his favourite house. When Hawkins got to the house, he was glad to see that the house was laughing together.
"Yo, Brett!" He called. Brett looked at him, "What's up, Chief?"
"Any idea where Violet is?" He asked. Brett shrugged, "She might be in the bathroom?" He thanked her and headed to the bathroom. His plan was to open the door, call out her name and leave if she didn't reply.
"Violet?" He called out, opening the door.
"Violet!" He shouted, seeing her on the floor, chocking and struggling to breathe, "Brett! Get in here now! Bring the jump bag!" He screamed. Hawkins checked her pulse and was not happy to see that was rapid. Brett arrived; the jump bag slung over her shoulder. She gasped, seeing the situation, but knelt down beside Hawkins.
"Her heart rate's rapid, she's cold to the touch. She's showing signs of an overdose, get the Narcan," he ordered. While Brett was getting that ready, Hawkins was trying to keep Violet awake, "Hey, hey, hey, don't you close your eyes, you've gotta fight,"
Tears were streaming down his face now, begging his girlfriend to stay awake, "Stay with me, Vi, you're gonna be all right. Everything's gonna be okay. You just gotta fight. You're a fighter, you can do this. Stay with me, I need you,"
Brett got the Narcan ready and injected it into Violet's arm, "Pushing 2 milligrams," Brett and Hawkins waited a moment before Hawkins ordered Brett to give her another dose.
"Pushing 2 milligrams," Brett announced. The only result they got was Violet started to fall into the darkness threatening her.
"Hey! Violet, please, stay awake!" Hawkins pleaded. She couldn't, though. Her eyes her heavier than concrete. It took a moment, but she finally gathered the strength to say her final words, "Evan,"
"I'm here, baby, I'm here," he gripped her hand tightly, "I'm here,"
"Evan…I love you. I-I love you so much. Mourn me, then be happy," she weakly said.
"What?" He didn't know what she meant. He needed her in order to be happy.
"Be happy," she clarified, "I love you, Evan," her eyes finally closed, and the heart monitor Brett had prepared earlier gave a long tone. Violet Mikami, paramedic on Ambulance 61 at Firehouse 51, was dead.
"No, Violet, baby, please, come back to me!" He cried, "Please, I can't live without you! No, no, no! Please! I need you!" He gripped her hand, kissing it and crying while stroking her hair. Brett was leaning against a wall, hand over mouth and sobbing. What the two paramedics didn't know was that the entire house had followed Brett and were watching as everything played out. Boden slowly pulled his radio to his mouth, "51 to Main, send CPD here. 51 is out of commission for the rest of shift," he shakily said.
"Copy, 51. CPD on their way,"
"Okay, everyone, clear out please. This is a crime scene now," Boden said.
Everyone left but Hawkins and Brett; Brett trying to coax him out.
"Evan…," she softly said, "Come on,"
"No! Violet's not dead!" He insisted. Brett gently pulled at his arm, "Evan, it's a crime scene now, we have to leave," she cried. He finally gave in, giving her hand one more kiss. He stood up, hugging Brett tightly. She rubbed his back in an attempt to console him. When they broke apart, she led him out of the bathroom and into the common room. Upton and Halstead finally got there and were led to the bathroom. It took a while for them to do everything they needed, but during that time, Casey made a speech.
"Okay, everyone, listen up," he stood on top of a chair, getting the house's attention, "We lost one of our own today. She was a friend, partner, paramedic, but most importantly, family. She was a sister to all of us. That hasn't changed. It never will. She made a mark upon everyone in the CFD and even more people that she's saved. She will be remembered. Maybe not widely, but deeply. Because I know that until the day we die, we will keep Violet in our hearts, cherishing the memories we've been lucky to have. For the rest of our lives, we're going to carry on the legacy of Violet Mikami wherever we go,"
Silence filled the room until Mouch spoke, "Hear, hear.
"We all knew and loved her. Me, Hawkins, Brett, Kidd, Severide, Casey, Boden, Capp, Tony, Ritter, Gallo, Cruz, everyone. We all knew her. She will forever be in our hearts,"
Upton and Halstead came back from the bathroom. Casey got down from the chair, "What'd you guys find?"
"We won't for sure until an ME does an autopsy," Upton started, "But it looks like someone murdered Violet,"
Okay, I know this is shorter than most of the chapters I've posted, but this was a story that's been in my mind for a while, and I managed to crank it out today. Well, technically yesterday, since it's 12:30 in the morning, but whatever. I hope to upload even more with a lot of free time this summer. Come the new school year, I might not be uploading much since I'm starting high school, but I will try to upload as much as I can. As always, please review, telling me what you think and prompts are welcome!
Peace!
