Chapter Two
I'm cruel and this time I do apologize for the chapter.
"Please tell Carina that I love her. That I love our baby even if she's not born yet."
"What? She's pregnant?" Andy asked shocked.
"Andy, promise me that you'll tell her." Andy watched Maya's breathing shallow even more. "Please, Andy," Maya begged, eyes closing.
Andy whimpered and choked out, "I promise Maya." Andy began to sob. 'I promise I'll help take care of them." Andy held Maya's gaze before her eyes closed. "I love you too, Maya," Andy whispered. "I'll take care of them."
Andy was still crying over Maya's body when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She looked up with watery eyes, cheeks still wet from the tears to see who was there and when she saw Vic she started to sob again when Vic wrapped her arms around her.
"Take Maya first," Andy said, and when she saw they were about to protest. "Captain's orders," Andy said in the most commanding voice she could come up with in the moment and the team looked at each other and followed her order.
The team got Maya into the basket and lifted her up. Travis and Ben started to work on her in the aid car while Ruiz drove. Meanwhile, they were setting Andy's leg and working on getting the basket back down to lift Andy up. Andy just continued to cry throughout the whole process. She's dead. She's fucking dead and It's my fault. Andy sniffles. Carina is going to hate me. Andy thinks. She hears the team say that she's ready to go and they rush her to the other aid car that showed up.
When she gets into the aid car she can feel Vic holding her hand and Jack is working around her. Checking Andy's vitals and checking the cut on her forehead.
"Four minutes out," Sullivan called out from the driver's seat.
"Hear that, babe? We're almost there." Vic said, squeezing Andy's hand.
"Yeah. Great. I'll have to face Carina." Andy said, tears falling from her cheeks. "I have to tell her that Maya- that Maya is." Dead. Andy thinks about what she can't bring herself to say aloud.
"Andy." Vic looks at her with concern.
"Don't. I don't need pity." Andy said, looking away from Vic.
"Ans, I can be there when you tell her if you want?" Andy looks at Vic and nods.
They were just arriving at the hospital and Jack and Vic were getting ready to lower Andy out of the aid car when they were met by Meredith, Amelia, and a couple of residents.
"Herrera, how many times do I need to tell you that we need to stop meeting like this." Meredith jokes but her smile drops when she doesn't get a witty retort from her favourite firefighter. "What's going on? Did someone die or something?" And that's what it took for the floodgates to open and Andy started sobbing and Meredith looked up in horror at the three other firefighters. "Someone did die?" Meredith asked as a horrified expression washed over her face. "Who?"
"Lieutenant Bishop." Andy managed to whisper.
Meredith was shocked. "Has anyone told Carina?" She saw the four firefighters shake their heads when Ruiz, Montgomery, and Warren came up to the group.
"No. We decided Andy should do it." Warren told her. "Dr. Hunt and he said that he would page Carina. Was a few minutes ago. Told us she was in an emergency C-section."
Meredith nods. "I need everyone to clear out." Meredith saw Vic about to protest. "Vic, You're fine to stay, just let us work and we'll be fine." Vic nods and lets Dr. Grey get a portable ultrasound to check for any internal bleeding and then had Amelia check her head wound and stitched it up since it was still bleeding and then Link came in to put a past on her leg, which he confirmed as broken.
"Andy, are the pain meds working?" Amelia asked once all the residents and Link cleared out. Leaving her, Vic, and Meredith as the only ones in the room with Andy.
"Yeah. I guess. Doesn't take away from the emotional pain though." Andy told her, looking down at her lap.
The four women heard a knock on the door and all looked up.
"Andy? What's going on? Are you okay? What happened?" Carina rushed out.
Andy looked at Meredith and Amelia and motioned for them to leave the room.
"Carina.." Andy started. "Something happened on the call we were just on."
"Yeah, I can see that," Carina said. "What happened?"
"Four of us were doing a rope rescue when a couple of the ropes snapped and obviously I ended up with a cut on my forehead and a broken leg," Andy told her, looking down.
"Do you have any other injuries? Internal or-" Carina suddenly stops. "Wait."
Vic and Andy looked at each other, knowing what was coming.
"You said "ropes", who else got injured?" Carina asked, a panicked expression forming on her face. When both Vic and Andy stayed silent she questioned them again. "Vic? Who else was injured."
Instead of Vic answering Andy did. "It was Maya, Carina."
"Carina, we tried everything we could," Vic told her, tears in her eyes.
"No," Carina said, eyes watering. "No. No, there's no way." Carina said, voice cracking. "There is no way my wife is dead." A couple of tears fall. "This has to be a sick joke."
Andy lets a few tears fall while Vic ran a hand through her hair. "Carina. I am so sorry. I am so fucking sorry."
"I- You're not kidding, are you?" Carina asked, stumbling over her words, voice cracking.
Andy and Vic made eye contact.
"She- She told me to tell you-" Andy's voice cracked. "She told me to tell you that she loved you" Andy had to stop. "And she told me that- that she loves the baby." Andy's heart broke when Carina broke down into sobs. Andy motioned for Vic to go comfort her so Vic went to where Carina was and wrapped her in a hug. Andy watched, wishing she could hug Carina.
Carina was still crying into Vic's shoulder minutes later when there was a knock on the doorframe. It was Meredith.
"Carina, if you would like to you can go and see Maya. We were going to take her to the OR but she flatlined before we could." Meredith tried to get through giving the news without breaking down.
Carina lifts her head off Vic's shoulder and nods, "Where is she?" Carina asked, voice breaking.
Meredith motions for Carina to follow her and she does. Meredith leads her toward another trauma room. When Meredith opens the door Carina breaks down into sobs again.
"I'll leave you alone. Stay as long as you want, Carina." Meredith rested a hand on her shoulder. "I am so sorry, Carina." Carina can't form any words so just nods in thanks.
Carina sits on a chair next to the bed and holds one of Maya's hands in hers and remembers back to the day when she told Maya she was pregnant a couple of months ago.
Carina had been waiting for Maya to get home since she got home from her shift at the station, Carina had made lunch special for her,
It was quarter after 1 pm when she heard the door open.
"I am so sorry, Carina. I got caught up with Andy and then traffic was a mess." Maya said, coming into the apartment all flustered.
"Bella, Bella. It's okay. Don't worry, okay? It's totally fine." Carina said, smiling at how frazzled her wife was.
Maya takes a breath and walks over to Carina, wrapping her arms around her waist and pulling her into a kiss. It started to get heated when Carina pulled away.
"You okay?" Maya asked.
"Yeah, I'm good. Just a little hungry." Carina told her and led her over to the table. "So we have baby corn, baby-" Maya cuts Carina off, catching on quickly.
"Is there something you're trying to tell me, Car?" Maya asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Am I ever going to be able to keep a secret from you?" Carina sighs.
"I'm just good at reading people."
"I guess you are, Bambina," Carina told her, smiling.
"How far along are you, Car?" Maya asked, guiding them to the couch in the living room, holding her hands.
"About two months. I have an appointment booked during your next day off." Carina told her, a huge grin taking over her face.
Maya smiles back at her and pulls her in for a kiss. "We're having a baby?"
"We're having a baby," Carina said back and pulled her wife into a bruising kiss which soon lead to them going to the bedroom.
Carina shook herself out of the memory and put a hand over her stomach.
"We'll get through this baby. You and me."
Again, I'm sorry for this chapter :(
