Chapter Three

Carina shook herself out of the memory and put a hand over her stomach.

"We'll get through this baby. You and me."

Carina was alone in the room with her wife's dead body for several more minutes before Meredith came back in.

"Carina, I'm sorry to interrupt but I need you to come and check on a patient." Carina looks ready to protest and Meredith shows her the patient's chart.

"They finally did it?" Carina let a smile slip on her face when Meredith nodded.

"Thing is, I don't know if this will hurt her more since Maya was a big part of her life and she helped her."

"Either way, she's hurting right now and I think she needs to know," Carina told her. "I'll go talk to her." Carina gets off the chair by the bed and walks to Andy's room. When she walked in she saw Andy wrapped in Vic's arms, tears still falling.

"Andy? I need to talk to you," Carina spoke softly.

"About what?" Andy asked, voice scratchy.

"I need to talk to you about your HCG levels," Carina said, not dancing around the topic.

Andy and Vic look at each other.

"Wait." Vic sat up. "Are you saying what I think you're saying?"

"I am. Andy, you're pregnant!" Carina expected Andy to smile or celebrate but Andy just broke down in tears. No. Now now. I can't be. Andy thought.

"How far along is she?" Vic asked, grasping Andy's hand.

"From these results, about 9 weeks. It's a little early, but I'd like to do an ultrasound now though. Just to make sure the accident didn't do any harm to the baby" Carina told Andy.

Andy just nodded, looking exhausted.

"I'll be right back. Just going to go grab the ultrasound machine and we'll get started." Carina told her, leaving the room.

Vic looked at Andy and brushed some hair away from her face, tucking it behind an ear. "Andy, I know this is horrible timing for good news but don't forget how much we've wanted this." Vic kisses Andy's forehead.

"Vic, I know. I just, it's such shit timing."

Vic nods and squeezes Andy's hand as Carina walks back in, eyes still red.

"Carina, we don't have to do this now. I know this is horrible timing."

"Andy, we need to make sure the fall didn't hurt the baby. I understand the timing of this is horrible, but we need to do this." Carina watched Andy nod and started the exam. Andy pulled her shirt up so Carina could put some gel on her stomach and used the wand to look for the baby. "Okay…I see 10 toes, 10 fingers." Carina smiled. "It looks like everything's okay, Andy. there's no need to worry about any after-effects from the fall." Carina wiped the gel off of her stomach after she printed a couple of pictures for Vic and Andy.

"Carina, I have a question." Carina hummed. "Wouldn't I have realized I was pregnant before now? Like, have morning sickness?" Andy asked, confused.

"Morning sickness does normally happen in the first trimester but it can be delayed until around the nine-week mark," Carina explained and watched the couple nod.

"Thank you, Carina. We appreciate you doing this for us." Vic said, smiling despite the circumstances.

"It's no problem. I should get going. I need to get home. I can't be here any longer." Carina told them.

Andy and Vic looked at each other.

"Carina," Andy stopped her. "I know you probably just want to be alone right now, but please come and stay at our place."

Carina looked like she was about to protest when Vic raised a hand, stopping her.

"No. Carina. Really, we don't mind. I just want you to be surrounded by people you can trust right now." Vic told her.

Carina sighed but agreed. "Go by the station and grab the apartment key from my office and then got." Carina nodded, grabbed the ultrasound machine and was walking out of the room when Vic called out. "I know it's still early but you should try to get some rest. Since Andy is injured she'll be released soon and I'll be bringing her home. We just need to talk to Ross first." Carina just nodded and walked out.

Vic looked at Andy and sighed. "I know this is hard for you, but we have to remember-"

Andy cut Vic off. "I'm sorry, Vic, but I just don't want to talk about this right now. I'll call Ross."

"No, I'll call her and have her come here." Vic stopped her, pulling out her phone from her pocket. Andy counted that Vic was on the phone for a few minutes before she walked back over to the bed. "She said she'll be here in 15 minutes."

Andy nodded. "She's going to wonder what the hell happened."

"I'd like to know what happened as well," Meredith said, coming into the room. "Station 19's gear is almost top-notch. So how the hell did the ropes snap on you?"

"You'd have to ask our former captain that. We haven't had a rope rescue since Hunt but ropes are normally cleaned and checked when we go back to the station." Andy told her. "I'm just as confused as you are."

"Alright, well, I know it hasn't been that long since you've come here, but I need to check the dressing on your forehead and then I'll get the release forms," Meredith told Andy. "I'll let you leave as long as I know that you're going to be going right home."

"We would but we need to pick up some vitamins since Andy is pregnant," Vic told her.

"I have some here. I'll go and grab them after I change the dressing on your forehead," Andy nodded and Vic moved away, letting Meredith work. "Alright, cut looks good, just let me put a smaller bandaid on it and I'll grab some more for you to take home. I know you want to get out of here and I'm willing to accommodate that, but I need to know you will stay on bed rest for as long as you have the cast on."

"How long will that be?" Andy asked, running a hand through her hair.

"Four to six weeks. We want to make sure it heals properly."

"Fine. I promise. I'll be good."

Vic and Meredith smile at each other, trying not to giggle, while Andy pouted.

"Alright, now let me work on this cut before your chief comes here." Meredith took the gauze off of her head and checked the cut. She cleaned it and put a smaller bandage over the cut. "Alright, all done. I'll go and grab the bandages and those vitamins and be back." Meredith paused on her way out. "Herrera," She waited for Andy to look up. "Please take care of yourself. I don't want to see you here for any reason other than appointments for ultrasounds." Andy nods.

"I'll take care of myself. I promise."

Meredith nods and walks out of the room. A few seconds later Chief Ross walked into the room.

"Herrera, what the hell happened?" Ross asked, shocked that one of her captains was in this position.

Andy opened and closed her mouth, not being able to get any words out. "I- Um." Andy cleared her throat. "We were doing a rope rescue when the ropes snapped on us."

"Who is "us" someone else was injured?" Ross watched Andy's head drop and Vic's eyes water. "What? What is it?"

"Chief Ross, Maya and I were climbing up the hill when the ropes snapped. We fell down into the ravine." Ross looks shocked. "Obviously I broke my leg and ended up with a concussion while Maya- she... Um. She hit her head too and a tree branch went through her stomach. She faded when we were still at the ravine. She was um…"

Vic could tell that Andy couldn't say anymore. "She was revived in the ambulance but just before they could take her to the OR she flatlines again. Sh-she couldn't be saved. Doctors tried everything."

The two women watched her face change to one of shock before she started pacing the room and didn't stop until Meredith came in the room minutes later.

"Um. Sorry to interrupt but I just brought these for Andy. remember to take two a day, Herrera. And don't take them at the same time you take pain meds." Meredith left as quickly as she came in.

"Wait. take what two a day?"

"Andy's um… she's…"

"I'm pregnant." Andy blurts out and watches Chiefs Ross's expression turn from devastated to shocked.

"Herrera, I. Wow." Was all Chief Ross was able to get out.

Sorry, this story is supposed to be based around Carina and it will be, I'm just so used to writing about Andy so bear with me.
