September 15, 1911

I was upstairs in my bedroom, which my sister had given me; though it was more of a spare room, it still felt like my own. I was writing in my journal as usual, something I have always enjoyed doing. I hope to someday become a writer or perhaps even a poet.

While I was writing in my journal, I heard a small knock on my door; I said, "Come in!"

I looked up from my journal and saw my cousin James, who smiled at me.

I smiled back and said, "Hey, Jamie! What's up?"

He replied, "Mom asked me to get you."

I furrowed my eyebrows and asked, "Why? Is there something she needs?"

James shrugged and said, "But she's in the kitchen."

"Alright, I'll go see what she wants, thanks for letting me know."

James smiled at me and, of course, I smiled back; he's such a cute 5-year-old.

I went downstairs, and I heard James following me behind.

I went to the kitchen and saw my sister Charlotte, who said, "Hey! James said you needed something."

Charlotte turned around and noticed me, saying, "Yes! Yes I do, I need help with dinner."

"Uhh, you usually only make dinner for you, James, and Henry; you know I don't eat dinner."

Charlotte looked at me and said, "I know, but tonight we have a guest over."

A guest? I asked myself, "Who is this guest?"

Charlotte shrugged. "A friend of Henry's; apparently he just got back from out of town."

I nodded and said, "good to know, alright so what do you need help with?"

"I need help with making the salad; it seems like that's the only thing you can do."

I rolled my eyes and sarcastically replied, "Ha ha, very funny."

Anyway, I got out all of the ingredients necessary for a salad, and then I started chopping.

After I had done some chopping, I added seasonings and toppings and mixed them all together.

After mixing it, she added some decorations to make the salad look more fancy.

I said, "Oh, okay, I'm done with my salad; do you need any help with anything else?"

Charlotte looked up from her cooking and asked, "Can you please check the chicken?"

I nodded and went to check the chicken; it looked good to go, so I got it out of the oven.

Hey Lottie, I'm going to go set up the table, and oh, when is our guest coming over?

Charlotte looked at the clock; she said, "Henry said around 7 pm, so it should be any minute now."

Alright then, I better go set up the table.

I went to get the table ready and put the plates of food on top, of course, after they were finished. The table looked all set.

I smiled to myself, feeling proud of myself; usually, I don't do these kinds of things right, but since we were having a 'special' guest over, I decided to at least try.

These days, women are expected to know how household work is done; however, there are some household tasks I'm not good at, such as cooking – it's not my forte.

I heard a sigh behind me; "Alright, everything seems good," Charlotte said.

"Charlotte, is everything ready for our guest?" I heard a similar male voice.

Charlotte looked up and saw it was Henry; she said, "Yes, everything seems good, thanks to Miah. She helped me, if it weren't for her, I'd be running all over the place."

Henry looked at me and smiled, "well, it's a good thing you have a sister."

Charlotte and I smiled, "Yes, it is."

"Anyway, our guest should be here any minute,"said Henry.

After he said that, a knock was heard.

Henry smiled, "Ah, that must be him."

Henry went to open the door and suddenly heard a male voice, "Hello Henry, it's good to see you again."

Henry replied, "It's good to see you again."

"Jack, I'd like for you to meet my wife Charlotte, my son James, and my wife's sister Miah; she's like a little sister to me."

It's true, Henry has always seen me as a younger sister; well, I am his sister-in-law, but he's protective of me like an older brother.

Jack's words caught my attention. "It's nice to meet you," he said as he shook Charlotte's hand; then he got to James and commented that he was a "cute fella." Then he reached for me.

His eyes were a pretty blue, an ocean blue, a blue that would haunt me forever.

He was tall, very tall compared to me, he had chocolate brown hair, beautiful blue eyes, his skin had a bronze tan from the sun, he had broad shoulders and an athletic figure.

He was a very handsome young man, I don't think I've ever seen anyone more handsome than him.

I held out my hand for him to take, instead of shaking it, he placed a kiss upon my knuckles as he looked into my eyes, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Miah." "It's a pleasure to meet you too," I replied.

Henry interjected, "Um, let's get to eating, shall we?"

We all nodded.

At the dinner table

"So Jack, how was it in Clifden?" Henry asked.

"Not too bad, just got homesick at some times, but i was doing work that I enjoyed," Jack replied.

I interfered, "Jack, if you don't mind me asking, what is it you work?" I was eager to learn more about him.

"I work as a wireless operator, I transfer messages."

"How is it you know Henry," Charlotte asked.

"Our parents knew each other, me and Henry were childhood friends, we practically grew up together," Jack replied.

"So you're from Godalming, Surrey?" I added on top of the question, "and I know that cause Henry's from there."

Jack laughed, "Yes, you are correct add."

As the night went by, we're having conversations about this and that, I gotta say that Jack is a charming man.

Jack was something unique, I know we just met but I feel something, I think I've taken a liking to him, I mean, how could you not? He seems like an interesting lad.
