Sydney Davenport stood outside of the hospital room, trying to convince herself that this wasn't a good idea. It had been over ten years since they'd last seen each other and if she was being honest, there was no valid reason that she could think of that would make them need to see each other. But there was something in her gut telling her to go in and see him.

She had walked into New York Uptown Hospital a few days before to visit her father, who had just gone through a spinal surgery after years of issues. Upon arrival onto the appropriate floor, she ran into her former almost brother-in-law, who slipped right past her as he made his way into the elevator along with another man who had an uncanny resemblance to Jamie. When she walked into the waiting room, she spotted Erin and Henry who were hugging a shorter blonde woman. Her curiosity was piqued, wondering which Reagan or close ally of theirs was in the hospital.

Eventually, she figured out that it was her ex-fiancé when she overheard a few nurses discussing it when she was leaving her father's hospital room one morning. Her heart slightly dropped, wondering what had to have happened that made him need an extended hospital stay.

She finally built up the courage to knock on the door after a nurse stared at her curiously when she walked past.

"Come in," she heard from the familiar but deeper voice that she once loved.

Sydney took a deep breath before walking in. She was immediately greeted by Jamie who was sitting on the edge of the bed watching the T.V. on the far end of the room.

"Hey stranger," Sydney greeted with a warm smile.

Jamie responded a confused stare. Sydney couldn't help but give a small frown. Does he not remember me? she thought to herself.

"Hi. Can I help you?" he responded.

She started to seriously regret her decision of doing this, "It's me, Sydney. Don't you remember?"

After a moment, she could see her name register with him. "Oh," he finally responded. He gave her a quick smile. "Hey Sydney. How are you?"

She stepped further into the room before finally taking place next to the wall, "I'm good. How about you? I didn't think I'd find you here. Are you okay?"

Jamie nodded, "I will be. How did you know that I was here?"

"I've been visiting my dad because he had surgery on his spine. You remember that he always had issues, right?"

He again responded with a confused look. It surprised Sydney that he didn't remember but then it occurred to her of how long it had actually been since they'd last seen each other. Of course he's not going to remember that, dummy, she chastised internally.

"Anyways," she continued. "I've seen your dad, Henry, Danny, and Erin hanging around here every time I come. I just pieced it together and eventually figured it out. What happened?"

"I got shot," he said, then lifted up his shirt slightly to reveal the bandage covering his lower abdomen.

Sydney suddenly let out a small gasp. This. This is what she had been deathly afraid of when they were together. She had seen what Angela had gone through with Joe and didn't want to have to go through it with Jamie. That's one of the main reasons why she broke things off. At the end of the day, she hates that their breakup happened the way it did but has come to accept that it was the best thing for both of them.

"Things were going south for a minute but thankfully I got through it," Jamie continued before putting his shirt down. "I'm actually getting discharged today. I'm just waiting on Eddie to bring me more clothes and Danny and Erin will take us home."

"You and Eddie McGinty are still friends?" she asked. "I haven't seen him since we were in school."

Jamie immediately shook his head, "No. I haven't seen him in ages. Eddie is my wife. Her actual name is Edit."

"Oh," Sydney said with slightly widened eyes. "You're married?"

"Mhmm," he nodded. "We just celebrated three years in May."

Sydney won't lie, hearing that Jamie was married was a slight punch to the gut. She had hoped that she would be married by now but the right person still hadn't come along. One of the main reasons for that was because she spent quite a few years dwelling on the failed relationship with Jamie. She harbored alot of guilt about ending the relationship and wondered if she did the right thing. After some soul searching and eventually seeking guidance from a counselor, she was able to get some peace about their break up.

"Well... congratulations," she replied.

Jamie finally flashed a genuine smile, "Thank you."

There was a moment of awkward silence between them before Sydney spoke up again, "And is she... okay with all of this?"

"What do you mean?" Jamie asked curiously.

"With you being a cop. And everything that comes with it."

Jamie nodded confidently, "She is. She's a cop too. We were partners for five years before we decided to make it official. All the feelings that she goes through with me being out there, I go through the same thing. It's hard at times but we make it work. I don't think I could do it without her."

"I'm happy for you... and I'm glad you found your person," she said sincerely.

All of a sudden, Sydney could finally put a name to the face. Eddie walked into the room, dressed up in a pretty green summer dress and wedges, her shoulder length hair loosely curled, with a duffel bag hanging off her shoulder. She was a vision and clearly, Jamie was enamored with her. She immediately noticed the glint in his eye when she walked into the room. His eyes never left her as she walked over to him. It was a look that she hoped for from a partner one day.

"Sorry I took awhile, Bub," Eddie began, not noticing Sydney who was slightly obscured by the curtain next to the door. She set the duffel bag down next to him on the bed and began to take some clothes out. "I had to throw our clothes in the wash. I haven't been home very much since being up here so most of our clothes were dirty. But I got you some fresh clothes to go home in."

"Thank you," he smiled. Then, he gently grabbed her by the waist and turned her around. He decided to go ahead and bite the bullet knowing that if he didn't, this meeting would get even more awkward than it already was.

"Babe, this is Sydney," he said, keeping a tight hold around his wife's waist as he gestured to his ex-fiancé. "Sydney, this is my wife Eddie."

Eddie stared at her then at her husband for a moment before her name finally clicked, "Oh!" She stepped forward and shook her hand. "It's nice to meet you."

"Likewise," Sydney replied with a polite smile. "I'm sorry to intrude but I just wanted to see how Jamie was doing."

Eddie stepped back to get some distance between them. Jamie looped an arm back around her and pulled her next to him. She put a protective hand over his that rested on her hip.

"You're not intruding," Eddie replied. "Don't worry. I'm glad you came to see him."

There was an awkward pause where no one knew what to do next. Jamie was silently praying that Sydney would leave, Eddie was wondering how the hell did they even get in this situation, and Sydney was contemplating the best way to make a quick getaway. Their saving grace came in the form of Jamie's nurse, who walked into the room to check on the dressing over his stomach.

Sydney finally decided that it was her time to leave. "Well I'm going to go ahead and go," she announced. "I hope you get better, Jamie. And it was really nice to meet you, Eddie."

"Thanks Sydney," Jamie replied while Eddie flashed a quick polite smile before assisting the nurse in helping Jamie lay down.

She gave a small wave before quickly seeing herself out of the room. She made her way past all of the patient rooms and back out to the waiting room before taking a seat. She let out a sigh... that meeting was just as awkward as she expected but actually surprised her. She had thought that she would maybe feel something with seeing him again but there was nothing. It made her a little sad because they used to be everything to one another but now it was like they were virtually strangers. She decided to go home for the day and hoped that she didn't have any other type of run in with them again.

"So..." Eddie drawled out, helping Jamie sit up as the nurse left the room.

"So..." he said back, wringing his hands together as he waited for her response.

"That was a little awkward," she began.

"More than awkward, hon," he responded as he let out a breath. "Way more than that."

"How did she know that you were here?" Eddie asked.

"She said that she'd seen Dad, Pop, and everyone else around here and that she eventually figured it out. Trust me, I had no idea that her dad was here or even that she was here. I didn't even recognize her at first," he explained quickly.

Eddie couldn't help but chuckle at her husband's slight nervousness as he explained himself, "Babe, if you think I'm upset at all, I'm not."

"Yeah?" he responded.

"I'm positive," she said, reaching up and fixing his messy hair. "Did you think I'd be upset?"

"A little... I don't know. I just didn't want you to think that we'd been in contact because we haven't. I promise. She just showed up."

"I know," Eddie replied. "And do you know how I know that?"

"How?"

"Because I know that you would've told me about it. And I know that you would have never reach out to her anyways. You are the most honest man I know. You would never lie to me."

"Never have and never will," he assured. Then, he looked her up and down and smiled. "You look very pretty, Ed. Why are you all dressed up?"

"It's a special day today," she replied gently. "We finally get to break you out of this place. There was a little bit there where I thought..."

Suddenly, she let out a wavering sigh then turned to wipe at her eyes.

"Don't cry," Jamie said softly, turning her back to him. She couldn't help but smile as he wiped under her eyes with the pads of his thumbs. "I'm okay, babe. I'm here."

"I know. I'm just happy that we get to go home. Be in our bed now."

"Me too," Jamie responded as he hugged her to him. "And do a few other things that I've been missing..."

She laughed and gently smacked his hands that were progressively lowering down her back. She stepped out of his embrace, "You're crazy. You can barely move and you still want to. It's only been about a week, babe."

"A week too long if you ask me," he sighed as he hung his head low.

Eddie smiled and pressed a kiss to his cheek, "Soon, I promise. But right now, let's get you ready and pack up your stuff so we can hit the road."

Jamie was about to get off the bed to help her before she stopped him. "Absolutely not," she said, shaking her head at him. "Stay on the bed. You're not helping."

"Why not?" he asked.

"Because you're recovering and the doctor said that you need to take it easy for awhile," she reminded him.

"I can still help," he insisted.

Eddie shook her head again, "I know but no. It would make me feel better if you just relaxed."

He smiled at his wife's overprotectiveness, "Alright fine."

"But you better enjoy this while it lasts," she joked. "Because once the doctor gives you the all clear, I want a foot rub."

Jamie laughed and nodded, "Got it."

He laid down comfortably on the bed and kept conversation going with his wife as she packed up his stuff.
