Pressing forward with determination, Sally swiftly traversed the subterranean depths of Marble Bridge's dungeon, her eyes narrowing as she spotted a fresh wave of menacing Badniks. With her bow, she deftly drew another arrow from her quiver.
Each arrow she released found its mark, shattering the Badniks and freeing the captive critters. Unyielding and undaunted, Sally left a trail of dismantled Badniks in her wake, demonstrating her prowess in combat.
Her sharp gaze caught sight of a new threat: a Badnik known as the Spikes, resembling a hermit crab with razor-sharp claws. Sally executed a graceful backflip, evading the creature's clawed assault. She notched her next arrow and unleashed it with precision, obliterating the Spikes and releasing yet another animal.
Continuing her swift journey through the dungeon, Sally encountered a series of swinging pendulum platforms reminiscent of those in Green Hill. However, this time they moved precariously above rivers of molten lava, and nearby fireballs added to the dangerous environment. Sally gauged the timing precisely, leaping from one platform to another with calculated precision.
A menacing Cater-Killer slithered toward her, eager to sink its fangs into the courageous princess. Swift as a breeze, Sally executed a flawless barrel roll, eluding the creature's attack. With her bow raised again, she unleashed an arrow that tore through the Cater-Killer, reducing it to scattered pieces. A critter emerged unharmed before fleeing away, leaving Sally alone with her thoughts.
Memories flooded Sally's mind.
Countless times atop Castle Acornia's balcony, waving to the adoring crowd below. Perched on her father's shoulders, she cherished the joyous moments with her mother and twin brother, basking in the cheers of their subjects. Sally and Elias knew they would eventually bear such duties and responsibilities. However, Sally never anticipated encountering these challenges at such a young age.
Late into the night, Sally's peaceful slumber became disrupted by Rosie Woodchuck, who swiftly picked her up in her arms.
"Sweetheart, wake up!" Rosie whispered with a concerned tone.
"Zzz...? Rosie?" Sally mumbled drowsily, stifling a yawn. "What's happening...?"
"Hush now, dear. We must hurry!" Rosie urged as she carried Sally out of the bedroom.
In the grand throne room of Castle Acornia, King Nigel Acornia stood in dismay as he witnessed the unfolding chaos that plagued his once-prosperous kingdom. Swarms of merciless Swat-Bots marched through the streets, relentlessly pursuing terrified civilians. Unfortunate souls became captured and forcibly transformed into robotic minions, and their identities had gotten lost to the cold machinations of Dr. Robotnik's treachery.
A profound sense of responsibility weighed heavily upon King Nigel's shoulders as he observed the grim spectacle below. The King's regal demeanor became shattered, replaced by an inner turmoil that threatened to consume him. His pacing footsteps echoed through the vast chamber, a physical manifestation of his struggle.
"How did it come to this? What have I done all this time?" King Nigel's voice echoed with a mixture of anguish and self-reflection. Each step he took seemed to reverberate with the weight of his reign, the missed opportunities, and unforeseen consequences.
"Daddy!" Sally called out to King Acornia and rushed to him, visibly frightened. "Daddy, what's happening? Why are those things attacking the city?"
The King let out a sigh and knelt to speak with his daughter. "Sally, my little bean. I desired to raise you and Elias in a peaceful kingdom so that one day you both could succeed me and lead our people into a prosperous future. But my paranoia led me to be deceived by the true enemy."
"What do you mean?" Sally started to ask until her father gently hushed her.
"Sally, you must go. I cannot bear to lose you as well."
Sally's eyes welled up with tears. "But Daddy, I'm scared! What if I never see you again?"
"We will be reunited, Sally. In the years to come," the King smiled faintly, a solitary tear streaming down his cheek. "But for now, you must stay strong for me. Do not look back, and stay safe."
Sally sniffled and nodded with a trembling voice. "Yes, Daddy."
"I love you," King Acornia kissed her forehead, embracing her as Rosie appeared before them.
"Princess, we must depart," Rosie stated, her hands on Sally's shoulders.
"But what about Mother and Elias? Are they safe too?" Sally turned to her father, who winced in grief, struggling to respond.
"Sally, they are-"
Before King Acornia could say more, a loud bang on the throne room doors interrupted him from speaking further.
"Open up, soon-to-be-former king! It's time for that SPECIAL treat I promised you!" Dr. Robotnik's sinister voice echoed through the room.
Determined, the King gently nudged Sally toward Rosie, his voice firm. "Take Princess Sally and the surviving evacuees to Knothole Village. They will be safe in the Great Forest, where your cousin Julayla resides. She will teach Sally everything she needs to know."
"Of course, Your Highness," Rosie replied solemnly, leading Sally away.
The final image Sally glimpsed of her father was him striding toward the exit, unsheathing a gleaming golden sword, ready to defend his kingdom.
While soaring above Mobotropolis, the nocturnal fires illuminated the sky, casting an intense glow that starkly contrasted with the tranquil blue hues. The previously serene atmosphere became shattered by distant screams and chaotic commotion. Positioned outside the castle, Rosie swiftly guided the young survivors, urgently urging them toward safety. Cautiously, she opened the castle doors and surveyed the surroundings, ensuring it was safe. Rosie motioned for the children to escape, emphasizing the need for their swift departure.
"Hurry, we must move quickly," Rosie urged, her voice filled with panic and composure. "We are going to a safe place."
Some of the children stumbled in their haste but quickly regained their footing, running away in panic. As Sally ran past, she paused to catch her breath.
Sally gestured toward the castle doors behind her. "But Daddy is still inside. He's-"
"Yes, and you must find safety while your father protects the kingdom," Rosie responded.
"But Daddy needs help!" Sally's voice quivered as tears welled up. She placed a hand over her heart, pleading. "I'm a princess. I'm supposed to help protect this kingdom!"
Rosie lifted Sally into her arms. "You will, my dear, but not right now." Strained by the added weight, Rosie spoke with determination. "Remember what I have taught you. A true leader knows when to retreat and when to fight."
Rosie turned and sprinted away, carrying Sally toward a distant forest. Sally glanced back, witnessing the devastation unleashed upon Castle Acornia. Her eyes filled with tears, her hand reaching out toward the castle.
"DADDY!" Sally cried out, helplessly watching the flames and shadowy robotic figures ravaging the Acornia Kingdom.
Once Sally and the remaining citizens reached the serene forest surrounding Knothole Village, a stark contrast to the turmoil they had left behind, harmony unfolded. Birds melodiously chirped, and the radiant sun cast its warm glow upon them. In the distance, hushed conversations, the laughter of children, and an overall sense of solace filled the air.
Sally approached Julayla the Manx, a cherished and wise confidant of the House of Acornia, not to mention Rosie's cousin. She was a mobian cat adorned with light brown and pink fur, possessing a graceful appearance. Her gray hair remained elegantly tied in a bun, and her piercing blue eyes exuded wisdom. Seated in a chair beside her rested a wooden bow and arrows, reflecting her skill in archery. She wore a maroon turtleneck sweater with a dark teal robe featuring white linings, embodying a sense of warmth and authority.
Julayla looked up as Sally approached, offering her the bow. Confusion flashed across Sally's face as she examined the weapon, then looked back at her teacher.
"I said I would teach you everything I know, starting with this," Julayla said proudly, gazing at the bow.
"A bow?" Sally blinked in surprise.
Julayla nodded, maintaining her gentle smile. "Indeed. It has been my primary weapon, and soon it will be yours. Your mother and I were close comrades when we first mastered archery together. That's why I will teach you. Now, take some arrows and give it a try."
Sally walked over to the quiver and selected an arrow, recalling archery footage she had seen on Nicole's screen. Julayla observed with the same smile as Sally's form looked terrible. She held the shaft incorrectly and used too many fingers on the string. When Sally released her shot, it barely traveled four feet.
Sally approached her teacher, apologizing. "I'm sorry, Julayla."
"It's alright, dear. It became expected. Now I know what we're working with," Julayla reassured her, returning the bow to the quiver.
Julayla sat back down in her chair and looked at Sally. "Here's the plan, Princess Sally. Over the next eight months with Gandar, you will focus on building your physical strength since you seem frail. Then, come back here to practice with the bow. I will teach you many things, but much is beyond my power. Read books on archery to expand your knowledge. My good friend Jeremiah can assist with that. Study everything, from mathematics and wind dynamics to breathing techniques and shooting multiple arrows. All of it is crucial for mastering archery."
Sally nodded after she absorbed her teacher's words, then picked up some weights.
"But before you do that, let me show you something," Julayla said.
Sally turned to see Julayla holding the bow in her hands. "This is how you shoot an arrow."
Sally watched as her teacher assumed a perfect posture, holding the arrow correctly. She aimed at a target with an apple placed on it. Sally witnessed Julayla release the shot, and the shaft flew with such speed, striking the apple and sending it flying through the air, still attached. Eventually, it landed on a tree.
"That was amazing!" Sally stood in awe of Julayla's mastery of the bow.
Julayla smiled at the compliment and looked back at Sally. "Yes, my child. Now, it's time to get to work. When your training is complete, you will bear the mantle of leadership with honor and grace."
With those words igniting a fire within Sally, she embarked on her training. Julayla's wisdom reaffirmed her determination to become the leader she aspired to be. Nicole was there to assist her whenever needed. The princess who had fled from Dr. Robotnik with a group of children had transformed into a fighter no one could have imagined.
"Everyone is far from home, and now my friends are going through so much. They're all trying so much to move forward. So I have to be brave for them as well. A princess should keep everyone else encouraged, right? I can't let them see me being weak." Sally held a straight grim look on her face during her thoughts.
Rosie and Julayla took on the role of foster parents for the lost children. However, they were also among the few adults who sought to resist and reclaim what Dr. Robotnik's empire had taken away. Despite their efforts to protect innocence, there was bitterness within the villagers, a response to the harsh realities of the world they now lived in. Julayla had always imparted wisdom to Sally, emphasizing that she would learn valuable lessons when the time was right. Sally understood the weight of those words when Julayla succumbed to a terminal illness, leaving a void in her life.
The villagers of Knothole turned to Sally as their new leader. Sally not only provided guidance and organization. But she also engaged in negotiations, suggestions, and seeking compromises during challenging situations. While many villagers hesitated to join the Freedom Fighting movement due to fear, some of Sally's friends became driven to fight against Dr. Robotnik due to the immense impact his tyranny had on their lives. The once vibrant Mobotropolis had transformed into a dark and ominous place, tainted by the shadows of pollution and surrounded by metallic structures.
In the present moment, with her friends trapped in the Super Badnik Horde, Sally approached with caution. She descended into the depths of the caves, her eyes wide open and alert for any signs of danger lurking within. Before she could progress further, the echoing metallic footsteps of Swat-Bots reached her ears, amplifying her sense of urgency and the imminent threat she faced.
"Crud," Sally muttered as she swiftly sought cover behind a nearby boulder.
Remaining concealed behind the protective barrier, Sally cautiously peered out, carefully counting the number of Swat-Bots in her line of sight. After completing her count, a sense of relief washed over her.
"Three? Not too bad," Sally confirmed in a hushed tone, satisfied with the approximate number.
Maintaining her position, the princess hunkered down as one of the Swat-Bots briefly glanced at the boulder. Sally waited until it shifted its attention elsewhere, scanning the area for signs of the princess. Seizing the opportunity, Sally cautiously maneuvered along the edge of the rock, inching closer until she found herself just a few feet away from the Swat-Bots. She came face to face with yet another Swat-Bot, its blinking lights indicating communication.
"Princess Sally Acornia detected," the Swat-Bot announced, its counterparts following suit as they trained their built-in wrist blasters on Sally.
"Seriously, there had to be another Swat-Bot lurking around here," Sally vented, deftly evading the first attacker's assault while the others unleashed a barrage of gunfire.
With agility and reflexes honed through countless encounters, Sally swiftly maneuvered, somersaulting behind another boulder for cover. She retrieved a specially designed bomb arrow crafted by Rotor and, rolling back into the open, aimed at a target. The shaft found its mark, striking one of the Swat-Bots and causing a powerful explosion that engulfed another one of them.
"Sally, I've detected a developing heat signature outside, likely Dr. Robotnik. My analysis suggests he may be waiting for you or Sonic's arrival," Nicole reported through the hand-held computer.
"Thank you for the update, Nicole," Sally acknowledged, her thoughts turning inward. "Unless Robotnik is luring me into another trap, I need to use extreme caution this time. I also hope Sonic isn't facing further complications in the dungeon."
Pressing forward through the treacherous caves, Sally skillfully avoided lava pits and menacing spikes, progressing toward her destination. Eventually, she emerged into an expansive area, confronted by a colossal lava pit with scattered rocky platforms. Sally firmly gripped her bow, ready to take down any Badniks that dared approach.
"You've been a persistent thorn in my side, princess," Sally heard a voice taunt, causing her to turn in its direction. Dr. Robotnik descended on his Egg-O-Matic, armed with a fireball cannon underneath.
"So, it seems that if I want something done..." Dr. Robotnik's voice seethed as he clenched a trembling fist. "...I'll have to take matters into my own hands."
Dr. Robotnik aimed the cannon at Sally, unleashing a fireball she agilely evaded by leaping backward. With a graceful backflip, she landed on one of the rocky platforms, fixing her gaze upon her adversary.
Dr. Robotnik moved methodically, hovering above the ground from one side to the other. "How intriguing to find you here instead of that wretched hedgehog. Did you believe I would allow you to steal what rightfully belongs to me?"
"What?!" Sally exclaimed, retaliating by shooting an explosive arrow at the Egg-O-Matic. However, the craft swiftly dodged the attack, evading potential ignition damage. "Everything you've taken belonged to my father, and you know it!"
"Now, now, my dear. Be a good princess and surrender. You have two choices: submit to being robotized or perish in the fires at the hands of the one you despise. Make your decision," Dr. Robotnik declared, aiming the fireball cannon directly at the Knothole leader.
"Never!" Sally hissed at the bloated villain. "Your twisted justifications for the suffering you've caused my people will not prevail!"
"Oh, but it's true, especially how your father once served himself. A pitiful fool full of hardships, just like his daughter!" Dr. Robotnik sneered.
Enraged by his words, Sally clenched her fists. Dr. Robotnik fired another fireball at her, but she skillfully evaded it, leaping to another platform.
"And just like his daughter, you stand in the way of Dr. Ivo Robotnik!" the corpulent doctor proclaimed with a grin. "Everything you possess now will always be MINE!"
Feeling deeply insulted by the madman's taunts, Sally gritted her teeth, her gaze filled with determination as she aimed her bow and arrow at Dr. Robotnik's deranged expression. At that moment, her thoughts couldn't help but drift to the one person who should have been there with her.
"Sonic, where are you?" she silently pleaded, hoping her ally's swift arrival could turn the tide in their favor.
Sonic and Bunnie ventured deeper into the dungeon, guided by the flickering light of torches that lined the walls. As they made their way along the corridor, they engaged in lively conversation, sharing stories and anecdotes. Bunnie couldn't help but burst into laughter, thoroughly entertained by Sonic's tales.
His charm and quick wit left a lasting impression on the cyborg rabbit. As her emerald eyes wandered, they briefly admired Sonic's handsome face and admired his lean, athletic physique. It was clear to Bunnie that Sally had found herself quite a remarkable companion in Sonic, someone she had likely searched for with great care.
"Eggman, huh?" Bunnie giggled at the nickname used to express disdain for a tyrant like Dr. Robotnik. "A fittin' moniker for a bumblin' old coot like him, no doubt."
"Nah," Sonic chuckled, dismissively waving a hand. "He's probably going to get loads more if he keeps this egg-obsessive-shtick up more often."
Curiosity sparked in Bunnie's eyes. "Speakin' of names, where did you get the name Sonic?"
Sonic blinked, taken aback, but then happily answered her question. "Oh, it's nothing too fancy. My family must have given it to me because I could run faster than most peeps. I can zip through the air at the speed of sound, something that's pretty impossible for anyone else."
"So, you could say you're quite lucky," Bunnie remarked.
Sonic tilted his head, diverting his gaze from Bunnie for a moment. "Yeah, maybe. But I still haven't fully explored the limits of my speed. I've always gotten told to keep it in check, but where's the fun in not pushing yourself to the max?"
A gentle smile graced Bunnie's lips. "Can't argue with that. I hope you find your family soon, and we can defeat Robotnik once and for all."
Sonic took a moment to ponder what Bunnie had said and shrugged. "Eh, if I can't find them, then I'll settle in with you guys for now, at least."
"Well..." Bunnie's demeanor takes a cheeky turn as a small amused smile appears. "It sounds to me you've been gettin' along quite well with Sally-Girl, huh?"
"H-Huh?" Sonic's blush deepened, and he waved both his hands dismissively. "Hold it right there! What the heck's that supposed to mean?"
"Oh, nothin'!" Bunnie replied innocently, casting a sly glance at the reddened hedgehog through half-lidded eyes. "I've been tryin' to help get that gal out of her own head for years, and it turns out all she needed was a hunky stud like you to help fish her out of the pond."
Sonic scratched the back of his head, failing to hide his embarrassment with a pouty look. "Listen, I'm flattered and all. But we just met like not too long ago. Plus, I'm always on the move, and Sally probably has her hands full with leading and...stuff!"
Bunnie chuckled, raising an eyebrow mischievously. "Sure, sure, Sugar-Hog. Whatever you say." She nudged him with her elbow, teasingly adding, "Better get a move on before she's a mile away into another man's arms."
Still pouting, Sonic let out an eye roll. "Tch, whatever!"
After looking around, Bunnie asked, "So, where exactly are we?"
Sonic scanned the area, taking in the lit torches and the surroundings. "We're far from the nearest chili dog stand, that's for sure. And it seems like someone has been here before us."
Bunnie grinned smugly, "Ghosts, perhaps?"
"Eh," Sonic shrugged, unsure. "I don't think any of those ghosts would need the light of a fire to navigate through this creepy junkyard."
"Got me there, Sugar-Hog," Bunnie crossed her arms, surveying their surroundings. "No archaeologist would dare venture into these crypts. So where else could they have gone?"
"Not into the lava, that's for sure," Sonic remarked, examining the entrance he and his new cyborg friend had just passed through. "Someone must be living somewhere nearby."
"I've heard tales about what happens in these ancient ruins." Bunnie's eyes darted in every direction. "One wrong step and everything collapses, arrows start flyin', or giant boulders appear. But there has to be something or someone else here with us, right?"
Sonic nodded, closing his eyes. "That seems logical, Bunnie. Which means we have to stay on our guard...!"
Suddenly, a gigantic spiked platform attached to a chain emerged from above, hurtling toward Sonic and Bunnie.
"WATCH OUT!"
Anticipating the danger, Bunnie swiftly halts the spiky platform using her mechanized arm, exerting all her strength.
Sonic emerges from beneath the trap, his face filled with concern. "Bunnie! Are you okay?"
"GRRR! I'm fine, Sugar-Hog! Just get out of here quickly!" Bunnie strains against the relentless force of the deadly spiked crusher, threatening to impale her.
Suddenly, Bunnie's robotic arm extends a foot higher, forcing the spiky platform of death up with it. "What in the world?" Bunnie reacts with astonishment.
Her legs began to elongate, hoisting her and the platform up high, leaving her stunned and impressed. With all three robotized limbs extended, Bunnie pressed the spike trap against the ceiling.
"Well, I'll be darned," Bunnie utters, bewildered by her unexpected feat.
"I had no idea you could do THAT!" Sonic can only watch, his curiosity piqued by Bunnie's remarkable abilities as a half-robot.
Bunnie attempted to call out to the azure hedgehog until she whirled around to become flanked by Buzz-Bombers and Bat-Brains.
"Oh, my stars!"
"Speaking of trouble! It looks like they've been tailing us!" Sonic commented as he swiftly maneuvered through the brick walls. "Hold on tight, Bunnie! The hedgehog's coming to kick some tin cans!"
Sonic dispatched a few Badniks attempting to grab Bunnie, then took hold of her hand and led her into a tunnel pathway. Bunnie couldn't help but be amazed by Sonic's incredible speed as he whisked them away from Dr. Robotnik's Badniks. After navigating through what seemed like a labyrinth, Sonic and Bunnie reached a descending platform and crossed a stone bridge spanning a lava stream.
Bunnie sighed in relief, "Phew! Thanks for the save there, Sugar."
Sonic beamed with a smug demeanor, "Pleasure doing business with you-!"
Suddenly, the ground began to tremble from its core, and fiery projectiles emerged from the magma. The bridge beneath Sonic and Bunnie started to fracture, prompting them to jump back in alarm.
"What the heck's going on!? A-a-an earthquake? A lava burst?" Bunnie asked anxiously.
"M-maybe it's the ghosts?" Sonic jokingly quipped, accompanied by a shrug and a nervous smile, earning a groan from Bunnie.
"Seriously?" Bunnie shook her head.
"AROOOOOOO!"
Out of nowhere, a sudden and thunderous howl reverberated throughout the structure, sending shivers of terror down Sonic and Bunnie's spines.
"Do you believe in the entire place coming down on our heads if we don't RUN FOR IT?" Sonic asked, looking visibly disturbed.
"No argument from me!" Bunnie nodded as she and Sonic fled across the collapsing bridge. "Hurry, the bridge is collapsin'! We gotta go fast!"
"Good thing I never go any other way!" Sonic commented.
Bunnie and Sonic came to an abrupt stop, realizing they had reached the end of the bridge. Before them lay a river of boiling lava, with stones cascading down from the ceiling.
"Tarnation! We're trapped!" Bunnie exclaimed, trembling.
Sonic looked at Bunnie and proposed, "You want to bet I can run across the lava without getting burned?"
"No, I wouldn't!" Bunnie quickly responded, pointing upwards at the falling blocks from the ceiling that landed in the lava. "The ceilin' blocks float in the lava a bit before sinkin'. We could jump on those!"
"Got it." Sonic flexed both of his fingers as they popped. "Juice time!"
At the same time, with precision, Sonic and Bunnie propelled themselves from one floating stone block to another in the lava. They skillfully evaded numerous descending blocks, displaying agility and quick reflexes. Finally, they safely reached the stable ground on the opposite side.
"And that's how it gets done!" Sonic smirked confidently, acknowledging their successful feat.
"Juice time?" Bunnie smirked with her hands on her hips.
"It's a phrase I learned from my dad. I heard about it from my uncle before he disappeared. Somehow, it stuck with me."
"AROOOOOO!"
The haunting howl persisted, causing Bunnie to look upward with a growing sense of unease.
"Seems like that howl is gettin' a lot closer," Bunnie remarked, raising an eyebrow. But she made an effort to remain composed.
"Which means there's something alive back there, right?" Sonic interjected, crossing his arms behind his spiky quills. "If someone found a way in, there must be a way out."
"I suppose so," Bunnie agreed, her gaze fixed on Sonic as he cupped his hands around his mouth.
"Hey, you! Whoever you are! We're here to lend a hand!" Sonic shouted into the darkness of the adjacent room.
Bunnie squinted at Sonic, her eyes narrowing. "Help them? We don't even know who they are!"
He shot a scowl back at the southern belle. "That voice sounded desperate. They might be in trouble. What if it's Sally caught in a trap?"
As Sonic and Bunnie cautiously stepped into the dark room, Bunnie continued to ponder Sonic's perspective. "You make a valid point. But what if we're the ones in need of help?"
"Can we at least assume that someone in these ruins doesn't want us dead?" Sonic questioned, this time without looking at Bunnie.
Bunnie fell silent, her lips sealed after considering Sonic's words. She let out a defeated sigh. "Alright, but can you see where you're goin'?"
"No, Bunnie, I can't, and it's slowing me down!"
In a few moments, the pair found themselves inside the threshold of an awe-inspiring treasure room. As they stepped into the room, their eyes widened in wonderment at the sight that unfolded before them. It was a vast chamber stretching into eternity, brimming with unimaginable riches that sparkled and shimmered in the soft ambient light.
Golden treasures adorned every corner. They cast a warm and inviting glow throughout the room. Glittering coins and ingots of pure gold lay piled high, creating cascades of wealth that seemed to flow like molten rivers. The room resonated with a symphony of colors as the light bounced off the faceted surfaces of countless cut gems, infusing the air with a kaleidoscope of hues.
Treasure chests of various sizes, intricately carved and embellished, stood proudly, their contents unknown but undoubtedly holding untold riches within their secure confines. Filled with a delicate fragrance, a blend of aged wood and the faint scent of ancient secrets carefully preserved within.
Elegant strands of pearls dangled from gilded hooks, their lustrous glow mesmerizing all who gazed upon them. The pearls were like delicate orbs of moonlight, whispered tales of far-off lands and untold legends. As the two companions took in the breathtaking spectacle, their hearts raced with excitement and anticipation.
"Whoa!" Sonic exclaimed, crossing his arms with a slight smirk. "That's some serious swag, right, Bunnie?"
Bunnie's eyes widened as she looked around, clearly surprised. "Looks like you're right, Sugar-Hog."
"Yep, cool sight, but we've got a mission to accomplish," Sonic said as he started to walk away. "Time to speed our way out of this place!"
"Hold your horses, Sugar-Hog!" Bunnie interjected, her robotized arm reaching out to grab Sonic's shoulder, halting him in his tracks. She pointed toward something else. "There's a cage, and someone's trapped inside!"
In the heart of the treasure chamber stood a cage with metal bars secured by a padlock. And it had a shadowy figure inside of it.
"AROOOOOO!"
As Sonic and Bunnie peered inside the cage, uncertain if the prisoner could hear them, they examined the lock. Sonic ran his hand through his hair, plucking a single thin quill out.
"So, let me guess," Sonic said with a smug smile and a wink. "You need something to pick the lock, don't you, Bunnie? Luckily, one of us is spiky, or you'd never-!"
Bunnie, standing there deadpanned, smashed the lock with her robotic hand. "It's just metal, Sugar-Hog."
"Oh, well, that works too." Sonic deflated slightly, his smile turning into an embarrassed one.
Ignoring Sonic's remark, Bunnie rolled her eyes and extended her robotized arm to pull the figure toward them. "Alrighty, whoever you are with all that howlin', let's get you outta-!"
To their surprise, all that remained inside the cage was a fake paper maché head with rolled-up sheets stuffed inside to give the illusion of someone becoming trapped. It also had a small recording device attached to the torso of the dummy. Their hopes became dashed, and silence fell over Sonic and Bunnie.
"AROOOOOO!"
"It's a fake!" Sonic exclaimed, breaking the awkward silence.
"Drop it, you bunch of intruders!" Sonic and Bunnie turned around at the sound of a gruff voice and found Spelunk, an elderly grey mole dressed in orange mining gear. He wore an orange mining helmet with a built-in light, metal brackets, a tool belt, clawed gloves, and gold bracelets on black cuffs. With a stern expression, Spelunk stood next to a cannon.
"Hey, don't scare a lady like that! Who are you?" Bunnie asked, glaring at him.
"This here's my claim, and I'm askin' the questions! And my question is, you got any last requests before I let you have it?" Spelunk retorted, scowling at the cyborg rabbit while holding a match in his left hand.
Sonic swiftly zipped up to Spelunk, resting his arm on the cannon, and raised two fingers. "Yeah, I've got two requests: show us how to get out of here, and get us a dozen chili dogs with extra onions and cheese. To go!"
"Chili dogs?! Forget it! Do you know how much chili dogs cost?" Spelunk growled. "Money doesn't grow on trees, you nitwit! You're just like the rest of them! They're always wantin' somethin' of mine for nothin'! Can't you kids leave me alone? I've spent ages working hard to recover all these treasures, and you whippersnappers think you can just come in and take it all!"
"Now, now, sir! We're not after your treasure!" Bunnie spoke out, attempting to reason with Spelunk. "We're just tryin' to make sure Robotnik doesn't harm our friend Sally or get his hands on the Chaos Emeralds!"
"Don't try to deny it! You thievin', trespassin', lootin' no-good varmints!" Spelunk remained unconvinced, pressing his left index finger against Sonic's nose. "And I've got half a mind to blast you!"
"Hey, you've got us all wrong! We're Freedom Fighters!" Sonic tapped his left foot, pushing Spelunk's finger away.
"Looks to me like you're freeloaders! And I don't give anythin' for free!" Spelunk gripped the cannon with both hands, aiming it at Sonic.
With a quick motion, Sonic flipped the cannon over, pointing it directly at Spelunk before darting away. "In that case, gotta roll, troll!"
"EGAD!" Spelunk shrieked, hastily flipping the cannon back and firing at Sonic. Only to find out that the fuse had already gotten cut off.
Outraged, Spelunk's face turned red as he relit the fuse. The cannon fired a cannonball that began chasing after Sonic, with Bunnie in tow as he grabbed her with his right hand. The mounted gun fired a cannonball that began chasing after Sonic, with Bunnie in tow as he grabbed her with his right hand.
"Whoa!"
Sonic and Bunnie raced through the cave, the cannonball relentlessly pursuing them. Eventually, they reached a dead end, coming to a screeching halt. Sonic and Bunnie stared at the approaching cannonball, realizing they were trapped.
"This has gone on long enough with that old crazy mole!" Bunnie declared, standing her ground with a determined scowl.
Bunnie caught the cannonball with her mechanical hand, twirling it around before forcefully launching it through the cave walls, creating a cloud of grey dust. Sonic's attention quickly turned to the skylight above them.
"Yo, Bunnie! That must be our way out! Let's make tracks!" Sonic pointed upward, calling out to his cyborg friend.
"Good eye, Sugar-Hog." Bunnie nodded, running in place momentarily before grabbing Sonic's left arm with her right hand. Together, they leaped through the skylight.
Meanwhile, Spelunk noticed the shattered cannonball through the cave walls, his anger intensifying. "Why, that schemin' little missy!"
Hastily, the old mole made his way over to a nearby lever. "If those two think they can go blabberin' about my treasure caves to the world, they've got another thing comin'!"
Spelunk pulled the lever forward, revealing a mine cart on a set of tracks at another entrance. He quickly hopped in as it started moving, zooming through the tunnels in a split second. Sonic and Bunnie landed outside the hole and found themselves at the base of a spiral-shaped summit with mine cart tracks. At the summit's peak, an exit from the mine awaited them. Sonic smirked and began running toward the hill, with Bunnie following closely behind.
Bunnie frowned, voicing her dissatisfaction, "You know, that mole guy ain't gotta be so penny-pinchin' all the time, and I almost miss havin' to deal with Robotnik's shenanigans."
Sonic shrugged it off, offering a lighthearted response, "Oh, he probably wouldn't be so bad if he spent some quality time with us!"
As they continued up the hill, Bunnie suddenly gasped as she saw Spelunk riding a mine cart, heading toward them from the opposite direction.
"I'll get you for this!" Spelunk's furious voice echoed as he waved his left arm frantically.
"That's not quite the quality time I had in mind!" Sonic screeched to a halt, his eyes widening as he saw Spelunk. He swiftly turned around, dashing back down the hill.
Bunnie followed closely behind Sonic as they raced down the hill, with Spelunk on their heels in his mine cart. Upon reaching the bottom, Spelunk stared in shock as Bunnie swiftly whipped herself around, using her robotized arm to bring the mine cart to a screeching halt.
"Please, you've got to listen!" Bunnie pleaded, her irritation evident in her voice. "Robotnik is sendin' his goons down here to dig out the Chaos Emeralds. And they won't stop at just takin' one stone."
Sonic joined Bunnie in pushing against the mine cart, attempting to reason with Spelunk. "What Bunnie's saying is true, man! You gotta believe us!"
Remaining cantankerous, Spelunk crossed his arms and turned away. "And why should I trust you, thieves? Give me one reason why I should believe a word you say."
"Because if you don't, Robotnik will send an army of Badniks after your treasure. And he'll likely robotize you, just like he did with me!" Bunnie's voice carried a tinge of sadness and frustration.
Spelunk remained stubborn. "Badniks? Pah! Nobody comes down here except a bunch of dirty thieves like yourselves. I defy you to prove otherwise!"
Just as the tension filled the air, the view from the worms-eye perspective showed the ceiling above them rumbling. Spelunk's expression shifted to mild concern, while Sonic and Bunnie displayed varying degrees of alarm. Suddenly, an army of Buzz-Bombers and Bat-Brains blasted through the ceiling of the treasure chamber, ready to attack and seize valuable goods.
"And right on schedule." Sonic rolled his eyes, a bored smirk on his face.
