Requesting something and obtaining approval from Snively was equally unfavorable as gaining it from Dr. Robotnik.
"Let me make sure I understand," Snively began, pushing his clipboard aside and focusing on Miles. "You're seeking my permission to venture alone to Spring Yard Casino and scavenge for robot parts? Without any assistance? What makes you believe I would grant such a stupid request?"
Miles nervously gulped before stepping closer to the subordinate, offering his reply.
The control room fell into a chilling silence as cold, impatient eyes scrutinized Miles. Silent enough that anyone could even hear a pin drop. The young fox's determination to see Spring Yard Casino's obstacle course persisted, but he couldn't risk revealing the exact location to Snively or Dr. Robotnik.
"Well? I demand an answer!" Snively grumbled impatiently, his tongue and jaw testing their limits as he tried to inject some authority into his voice, determined to assert his dominance over Miles.
Miles, feeling defeated, responded in a meek tone, avoiding direct eye contact as he didn't want to infuriate his superior. "I-I just thought it might be beneficial, you know? To have a change of pace," he explained. "I've been completing my daily tasks more efficiently than usual, and I thought a bit of fresh air wouldn't hurt. Besides, I'm constantly seeking new ideas to enhance the Badniks I create for Dr. Robotnik. And, if I'm ever fortunate enough, I could try to inform you if I stumble upon one of those elusive Chaos Emeralds-!"
Snively snorted dismissively at the young fox's words, maintaining his stoic demeanor to conceal any signs of disgust he might have felt. But then, unexpectedly, he burst into laughter, his head thrown back in amusement. The laughter persisted for an uncomfortable duration, causing Miles to furrow his brow in confusion.
Finally, amidst intermittent chuckles, Snively managed to speak. "Oh, dear...! Well! I admit, I find your joke quite amusing! You? Finding a Chaos Emerald? One of the fabled gemstones capable of unleashing immense power and granting the holder's deepest desires? I suppose it might seem remotely possible for someone like you, but let's face it, you're still as clumsy as ever."
To worsen the situation, the short human achieved what he had hoped for, provoking a furious reaction from Miles. "That's not true! I can go out there and find a Chaos Emerald myself! Wait and see-!" Miles could barely utter another word before Snively's scowl deepened, and he swiftly interrupted.
"And here I thought you had learned your lesson about meddling in affairs that don't concern you," Snively retorted, his narrowed gaze locking with Miles'. "Do I need to remind you who gave you this job in the first place? Are you truly so ungrateful?"
"No, Dr. Snively! It's not like that at all! I am grateful for this opportunity! All I'm asking is a chance to prove my worth to Dr. Robotnik!" Miles pleaded, feigning shock and ensuring Snively wouldn't suspect his ulterior motives.
A wicked glimmer danced in Snively's eyes as he chuckled cruelly. "Oh? So you're ready to demonstrate your gratitude, hmm? Well, perhaps I have a task for you: scrap collection. It should be simple enough, considering your fondness for doing such work when isolated."
Miles played the clueless fool masterfully while his inner excitement surged as he prepared to seize his victory. "I'll take it! I'll do anything-!"
"But there's one condition! Leave that mutt of yours behind while you're gone. Remember, no assistance," Snively interjected, a devious grin spreading across his face, fully aware of the fox boy's likely horror-stricken reaction.
Nevertheless, Miles had to think on his feet. "I just don't see how I can-!"
"You're clever, defective one. You'll figure it out," Snively snorted dismissively, swiveling his body halfway in his chair and raising his head haughtily. "Either return with a Chaos Emerald for the doctor or don't bother returning at all."
Shortly after, the short human burst into laughter, much to Miles' bewildered expression. The young fox didn't want to leave his faithful companion T-Pup alone in this dreary place, but one glance at Snively told him that this might be his only chance to visit Spring Yard Casino's obstacle course.
Perhaps, just maybe, Miles would finally get to meet the legendary Blue Blur himself.
That was another reason he had willingly placed himself in this predicament. Miles contemplated arranging a secret rendezvous with his only robotic confidant. It was his sole plan, and now he was determined to see it through, no matter the cost.
With a heavy sigh, Miles reluctantly acquiesced. "Yes, sir..."
"Good boy," Snively smirked as he waved off the young fox with a dismissive gesture, a hint of sternness in his expression. "Now, go away."
With that final command, Miles swiftly exited the control room before Snively could fully comprehend his intentions, causing a suspicious eyebrow to raise in the short human's visage. Was the young fox plotting an audacious revenge or simply seeking attention by diverting Snively from his work?
An uneasy feeling gnawed at Snively, but he shook it off, realizing that at least he would have some peace while he continued his research on the enigmatic Miracle Planet. He was confident Dr. Robotnik would become informed of this fox boy's disobedience.
All Snively could hope for was that witnessing Miles face the consequences of his actions would become as satisfying as conquering the entire realm of Mobius.
An onslaught of Buzz-Bombers and Bat-Brains burst through the roof of the treasure room, their powerful entry shaking the very foundations. Simultaneously, Cater-Killers and Spikes emerged from another entrance, adding to the chaotic scene. The thunderous echoes reverberated through the air, causing the ceiling to crumble and rocks to plummet perilously close to Sonic and Bunnie. Startled, they instinctively recoiled, their eyes widening in alarm while Spelunk seemed to be blowing a fuse.
"Huh?! What in tarnation is the meanin' of this?! And what in Mobius are those contraptions?!" Spelunk exclaimed, hopping out of his mine cart in frustration.
"We told you they'd track us down! Now they're going to bring this whole place down on top of us!" Sonic remarked, his voice filled with urgency. He then turned to the old mole, a mischievous grin on his face. "And you owe me a soda after we survive this mess!"
Still attempting to dodge the falling rocks, Spelunk retorted, "I wouldn't buy you a single soda, even if I had all the treasure in the world! All of this is your fault, hedgehog! You busted in on me, and now everybody else wants to!"
Bunnie interjected, her voice laced with concern, "It's YOU makin' a big mistake here! Haven't you ever heard of Robotnik, the nastiest lowlife in Mobius?"
"Nope!" Spelunk exclaimed before swiftly making a beeline toward the exit, leaving Sonic and Bunnie to fend for themselves amidst the chaos.
Sonic, his arms crossed and unamused, couldn't help but shake his head. "Let me guess; you don't get out much, do you?"
Spelunk turned his head, a sheepish expression on his face. "Nuh-uh!"
The outrage on Sonic's face intensified. "And don't you realize that Egghead is about to destroy this entire place and snatch away all your treasures?!"
Standing outside the exit, Spelunk looked back at Sonic, still seemingly oblivious to the imminent danger. "No, sirree! I don't pay any mind to current events!"
Sonic sighed, his frustration evident, as he glanced at Bunnie and made a mocking gesture with his thumb, indicating Spelunk. "Perhaps this guy should consider a career in politics."
As the onslaught of Badniks continued to pour in from the roof, the structural integrity of the ceiling reached its breaking point. It gave way, sending debris and robots crashing into the treasure room. Spelunk anticipated the impending disaster and swiftly retreated, narrowly avoiding being caught in the chaos.
His eyes widened in horror as a pile of enormous boulders tumbled down, blocking the exit and sealing the trio from any means of escape. A gasp escaped his lips as the reality of their predicament sank in. The once-clear path to freedom now became obstructed, leaving them trapped within the confines of the treasure room.
"Oh, now I ain't goin' nowhere!" Spelunk exclaimed, pointing to the boulders blocking the doorway. "Those rocks have sealed off the only way out!"
Determination shining in her eyes, Bunnie quickly assessed the situation and crouched down, prepared for a fierce confrontation. "You take care of the ones on the right, Sugar-Hog! I'll handle the ones on the left!"
Sonic, a confident smirk playing on his lips, cracked his knuckles before addressing Spelunk. "We can stop this mess, but you gotta let us go just this once, old-timer!"
Caught between the impending danger of the approaching Badniks and Sonic's persuasive words, Spelunk glanced back and forth, weighing his options. Reluctantly, he conceded, realizing the necessity of their assistance. "Ugh! Oh, alright! But this kind of recklessness must be discouraged, or else I might have to share my treasure!"

Reluctantly, he conceded, realizing the necessity of their assistance. "Ugh! Oh, alright! But this kind of recklessness must be discouraged, or else I might have to share my treasure!"
Sonic, his spin attack effortlessly taking down one of the Cater-Killers, retorted with a cocky grin, "What? You don't think we can handle a few tons of rock, a bunch of Badniks, a limited air supply, and your bad attitude? I'll have us out of this place faster than you can say you're a grumpy old miser!"
Displaying her impressive acrobatic skills, Bunnie swiftly executed a dropkick on a Buzz-Bomber before smoothly transitioning into a series of punches, dispatching three Bat-Brains. Observing another Buzz-Bomber closing in, Sonic swiftly curled into a ball and sent the bee-themed Badnik flying. As the dust settled, Bunnie hopped away to assist Sonic.
Within the treasure room, the relentless battle continued, with Bunnie fearlessly taking on more Badniks. Each defeated foe revealed the trapped animals within, freeing them from Robotnik's grasp. However, the chaos wasn't over yet. A massive boulder, disrupted by a Buzz-Bomber's detonator, split in half, hurtling toward Spelunk. Noticing the imminent danger, Sonic dashed toward the old mole and pushed him out of harm's way just in the nick of time.
Carrying Spelunk in his arms, Sonic gently set him down. "Looks like you've got some new friends!"
Spelunk, his voice filled with genuine shock and gratitude, a tear welling up in his eye, stammered, "Why, you risked your own life to save mine? No one's ever done anythin' like that for me!"
"Relax, Pops!" Sonic winked at him. "That's what Freedom Fighters do! Now, enough with the sappy stuff! We're going to need your help to put a stop to these dumb bots and prevent any more damage around here!"
Faced with two approaching Spikes, Bunnie quickly evaded their claw swipes with a graceful backflip. "A little help would be mighty appreciated, boys!" she called out anxiously.
In a swift motion, Sonic, still in his ball form, zoomed through, knocking the hermit crab Badniks aside. Bunnie's eyes narrowed as she witnessed several Bat-Brains making off with bags of Spelunk's treasure, accompanied by Cater-Killers carrying even more loot. Determined to salvage the situation, she rushed forward to intercept them, only to be ambushed by additional Cater-Killers.
Just as the three Cater-Killers closed in on Bunnie, a spiky platform shot up from the ground, impaling the caterpillar-based Badniks and causing them to burst open, revealing small critters within. Sonic skidded into a fighting stance, ready to assist his teammate.
Spelunk stood nearby, clutching a remote control device. "And stay out, you robot-rapscallions! I didn't build all these traps to sit on my duff while you robot duffers try to rob me!"
Sonic flashed a smirk. "Now you're catchin' on, Pops!" With a burst of speed, he spun through the boulders blocking the exit.
"Alright, Sugar-Hog!" Bunnie cheered, following Sonic's lead.
Sonic's head popped out of the hole in the boulders, a look of impatience on his face. "I'm waiting!"
Without wasting any time, Sonic, Bunnie, and Spelunk raced through the hole, narrowly escaping as the remaining boulders tumbled down, completely sealing the pit. As the group ventured deeper into the caves, Sonic swiftly dispatched a Cater-Killer with a spin attack, causing its body segments to break off in different directions.
Each one maneuvered skillfully to avoid incoming Badniks as they continued their run. Along the way, they encountered a few Buzz-Bombers, which Bunnie swiftly took down by leaping and swinging her extended robotic leg, obliterating each bee-based Badnik. As they navigated the pathways, the trio carefully examined the three caves before them, aiming to determine the correct path and lead them out of the labyrinthine maze.
Sonic turned to Spelunk. "Which way, geezer?" he asked, his voice filled with anticipation.
Spelunk sighed dejectedly and shook his head. "It doesn't matter; I booby-trapped all of 'em!" he replied, his voice tinged with regret.
Curiosity piqued, Sonic approached one of the caves, only to be greeted by a startling sight. A pair of spiked balls attached to ropes swung menacingly from side to side, blocking the passage.
Sonic couldn't help but be surprised, though his signature smile never left his face. "Whoa!" he exclaimed. "Gee, most people would have been satisfied with a deadbolt and a chain!"
Always ready to lend a hand, Bunnie chimed in with her charm. "That's for sure!" she said. "How do we get past this swingin' doohickey?"
Spelunk pointed toward the trap and replied, "A person needs to be faster than a mosquito to get through there!"
Sonic couldn't resist showing off his confidence, a smug smirk on his face as he snapped his fingers. "Pssh, who do you think taught those bugs how to boogie in the first place?" he quipped. Turning to Bunnie, he continued, "Bunnie, you think you can use your awesome stretchy robot arm to get us through this trap?"
Bunnie pondered the idea, considering the feasibility of Sonic's suggestion. After a brief pause, she nodded with determination. "Allow me, boys," she said, winding her robotic arm.
With calculated precision, Bunnie waited for the perfect moment and then launched her robotized arm forward. It stretched and extended between the spiked balls, reaching across the treacherous gap. As she safely reached the other side of the cave, Bunnie exerted the strength of her arm, causing the spiked balls to halt.
Showing off a satisfied smile, Bunnie declared, "Okay, that should do it!"
Sonic's enthusiasm soared as he pumped his fist in the air. "All right! This way to the races, aces!" he exclaimed, his voice brimming with excitement.
Spelunk couldn't help but chuckle at Sonic's exuberance. "Haha! So, what are we waitin' for now? Let's go!" he said, filled with amusement and eagerness.
In synchronization, Sonic and Spelunk dashed in place, their feet a blur as they zoomed alongside the motionless spiked balls. As they neared the other side, Sonic abruptly skidded to a halt and swiftly reached behind him, grasping Bunnie's robotized hand firmly.
"Just a sec, Bunnie! I got you!" Sonic called out to his resilient friend.
With a tug, Sonic yanked Bunnie's arm back with impressive force, propelling her forward and allowing her to effortlessly hop her way across the treacherous path of spiked balls. Spelunk observed with admiration as Bunnie gracefully landed on the other side, joining them unscathed.
"Wow! Thanks, Sugar-Hog!" Bunnie expressed her gratitude, her voice filled with genuine appreciation.
Sonic beamed with satisfaction. "Hey, you give a little, you get a little!" he responded, his happiness radiating from his voice.
Eager to press on, Spelunk waved a hand toward the trio, urging them to follow him. "Come along, you two! There should be an exit somewhere!" he exclaimed, his excitement evident.
"Got it. Juice time!" Sonic replied with determination lacing his words.
With renewed energy and a shared sense of purpose, Sonic and Bunnie followed Spelunk's lead.
Amidst Dr. Robotnik's malicious laughter, he hurled another fireball in Sally's direction. Undeterred, Sally gracefully leaped over the fiery projectile, her gaze unwavering as she drew her bow, aiming at the diabolical human. She released an arrow that found its mark, piercing the underside of the menacing Egg-O-Matic. The carrier teetered precariously for a few moments, causing a flicker of hope to ignite within Sally's heart. However, Dr. Robotnik swiftly regained control of the multi-purpose hovercraft, stabilizing it with a momentary show of his grip.
"Miserable little princess!" Dr. Robotnik's voice boomed, filled with disdain. "Dark days are awaiting, for I shall torch you and Knothole into ashes!"
Zooming his hovercraft to the side of the stage where Sally stood, Dr. Robotnik launched another fireball, attempting to engulf her in its destructive flames. With lightning-fast reflexes, Sally leaped to the safety of an adjacent platform, narrowly evading the fiery onslaught. But the fire on the other side of the stage began to spread, encroaching upon her newfound refuge.
"Stop moving and give me that other Emerald, princess!" Dr. Robotnik's hands clenched in anger as he gripped his control panel.
"How about no, Robotnik?!" Sally retorted defiantly, her voice tinged with determination, as she fired another arrow at the approaching hovercraft.
"Your cocky little needle mouse won't save you this time!" Dr. Robotnik bellowed in frustration, launching yet another fireball beneath Sally, only to be met with her nimble evasion and a well-aimed arrow striking his vehicle once more. "And stop hitting me!"
But Sally remained resolute, her aim steady.
Another hit.
"Come on, now!"
Another fireball.
"Go ahead and try, Robotnik!"
Engulfed in an intense battle of wits and agility, Dr. Robotnik relentlessly fired projectiles at the chipmunk girl. She skillfully alternated between attacking the Egg-O-Matic and leaping between platforms floating amidst the treacherous lava pit. However, despite her valiant efforts, Sally soon found herself cornered, forced to confront the final unburned platform with a sinking feeling of despair.
"Crap!" Sally's exclamation carried a mixture of frustration and realization as she surveyed her limited options, recognizing that there was nowhere else to run.
"Indeed so, princess," Dr. Robotnik remarked with a maniacal grin stretching from ear to ear on his face, relishing in his perceived triumph. "It's game over for you this time, you royal brat."
From their vantage point behind broken piles of large boulders in the distance, Sonic, Bunnie, and Spelunk anxiously observed the intense showdown between Sally and Dr. Robotnik. Their concern for Sally's safety was palpable, but they knew they had to devise a plan to end Dr. Robotnik's fireball cannon. With their left hands held up to their faces, they huddled together, their voices barely above a whisper. Spelunk rummaged through his mining bag, eventually producing a piece of Sulfurius in his right hand, deftly peeling it with a knife into a spare sack.
"Bet you both never seen Sulfurius in its natural state afore!" Spelunk whispered excitedly to Bunnie, who stood beside him.
Curiosity evident on her face, Bunnie leaned closer and inquired, "What in the hoo-hah is that?"
"I don't know the details, but it works like gunpowder! We need to buy enough time to stall Robotnik in his machine so that I can blow up that lootin' lunatic with this," Spelunk explained, gesturing toward the sack filled with fragments of Sulfurius.
"Cool!" Sonic chimed in with a smirk. "You guys go on ahead of me, and I'll distract Butt-Nik as long as I can until I give you the signal!"
As Sonic finished speaking, Bunnie and Spelunk nodded in agreement, acknowledging their roles in the imminent plan. With silent determination, they stealthily moved away, leaving Sonic to dart into the heart of the battle.
"Yo, Butt-Nik!" Sonic called out, crossing his arms and tapping his left foot impatiently. "Didn't anyone ever tell you not to play with fire?"
"Sonic!" Sally's face lit up with a grateful smile upon seeing her friend.
"Ah! There you are, rodent!" Dr. Robotnik's voice dripped with malice as he shot Sonic a deathly glare from beneath his pince-nez sunglasses. "I see you've decided to face me! Now, I will finish you with my new improvement to my Egg-O-Matic!"
Sonic cocked an eyebrow, unimpressed. "So what, you gonna launch a wrecking ball at me again?"
Dr. Robotnik's face twisted in confusion, and he retorted, "Launch another wrecking ball? No!"
Seizing the opportunity to taunt the tyrant, Sonic snapped his fingers with a mischievous grin. "Oh, pull the ground I'm standing on apart? Push me into the lava?"
Frustration etched across his features, Dr. Robotnik raised his hands to his head, his voice filled with irritation. "No, no, fire! Yes, fire! I'll shoot fireballs at you!"
Sonic let out an exasperated sigh, rolling his eyes mockingly. "Well, you should've said that earlier or warned me about burning to death. Maybe something like "You Will Burn!" would have been more dramatic." He couldn't help but add a touch of sarcasm to his words. "But seriously, dude, "I will finish you with my new improvement to my Egg-O-Matic!" and it's just fireballs? That's kind of an easy way for...!"
"I make the machines, hedgehog!" Dr. Robotnik interjected, cutting off Sonic's playful banter. With a press of a button, fireballs descended, hurtling toward Sonic. "I shall now demonstrate!"
Sonic's agility and quick thinking allowed him to evade each fiery blast with impressive precision. As he deftly maneuvered around the onslaught of fireballs, he scanned the battlefield, searching for the perfect opportunity to strike back.
"Nice try, Egghead! You'll have to try harder than that!" Sonic taunted, his voice filled with confidence.
Dr. Robotnik chuckled smugly, pointing below Sonic. "Haha! Look below yourself, rodent!"
Curiosity piqued, Sonic glanced down, only to see a massive expanse of fire consuming the land beneath him.
"CRAP!" Sonic exclaimed, realizing the danger he was in.
Desperate to gain control of the situation, Sonic attempted to grab hold of Dr. Robotnik's hovercraft, but the surface proved too slippery, causing him to slip and fall toward the fiery abyss. Miraculously, he managed to land on a safe platform just as the flames dissipated.
Observing Dr. Robotnik's movements, Sonic deduced the mad scientist's strategy. "He's trying to trap me. Well, time to turn the tables!"
As Dr. Robotnik approached Sonic's platform, the blue hedgehog patiently waited for the fire on the adjacent side to subside. With split-second timing, Sonic leaped over the disappearing flames, narrowly avoiding another fireball that struck his previous position. Seizing the opportunity, Sonic spun into a blur, landing a strike against the rotund doctor's Egg-O-Matic. Reacting swiftly, Sonic propelled himself back to the safety of his platform, ready for the next round.
Sonic repeated this pattern, timing his jumps and attacks with precision. Each time Dr. Robotnik unleashed a fireball, Sonic evaded it effortlessly, leaping from one platform to another while skillfully landing hits on the Egg-O-Matic. The obese doctor grew increasingly frustrated as his fiery projectiles continuously missed their mark.
Despite the hazardous environment, Sonic kept an eye on Dr. Robotnik's actions. Recognizing a pattern in his movements, the blue hedgehog leaped and dodged, avoiding the lava while relentlessly pummeling the hovercraft. With every well-placed hit, Sonic not only evaded harm. But he also inflicted damage upon his round adversary.
"You little pest! Stay still!" Dr. Robotnik growled at Sonic, his frustration mounting.
Sonic couldn't help but smirk mischievously. "Alrighty, then!"
Surprisingly, Sonic abruptly halted his movements, causing Dr. Robotnik's grin to widen with delight. The round tyrant aimed, ready to unleash another volley of fireballs. However, Sonic had a different plan in mind. He leaped high into the air, gracefully evading each fiery projectile before landing a solid hit on the Egg-O-Matic again.
"Oopsies!" Sonic couldn't contain his laughter, thoroughly enjoying the thrill of the battle.
Dr. Robotnik's expression morphed from delight to frustration as he grumbled, "You are one persistent hedgehog. I'll give you that."
But then a twinkle appeared in Dr. Robotnik's eyes as he revealed his next sinister move. "But it's time for your little girlfriend... TO BURN!"
Sonic's heart skipped a beat as he froze in shock. "Sally, get out of there!"
His desperate cry rang out, but before the flames could reach her, someone came and snatched Sally away from imminent danger. It was none other than her loyal friend and teammate, Bunnie.
Dr. Robotnik's jaw dropped in disbelief as he witnessed Sally being rescued right before his eyes. The surprise and anger were palpable in his voice. "How did you-?!"
Sonic let out a sigh of relief, his worry dissipating. "Oh, good."
Sally, her voice filled with a mix of relief and delight, expressed her gratitude. "Bunnie! Thanks for the save."
Bunnie beamed at her best friend, relieved to see Sally unharmed. "Y'all okay, Sally-Girl? Sorry to be tardy for the party."
"Grrr, you fools will not stand a chance! The Chaos Emeralds are MINE!" Dr. Robotnik waved his left arm furiously, his anger reaching its boiling point.
Sonic's determination only grew in response. "Ha! Then try this one out for size, Eggman!" He shouted, his eyes locked on the mad doctor.
Sonic curled up into a ball, generating power as he revved in place. Then, with incredible speed and precision, he launched himself at the Egg-O-Matic, his impact causing the hovercraft to sway uncontrollably in wild circles. As the flamethrower ran out of juice, Dr. Robotnik frantically attempted to recharge it, unaware of Sonic's swift move.
With lightning-fast reflexes, Sonic's hand snatched the doctor's hand into the carrier, his other hand holding out the coveted yellow Chaos Emerald. The blue hedgehog's swift actions left Dr. Robotnik stunned. Sonic attacked and smashed the flamethrower, rendering it useless.
"Looks like I broke your toy, Eggy!" Sonic taunted, a triumphant grin spreading across his face as he proudly displayed the yellow Chaos Emerald. "But I got a cool prize, though."
"NOT AGAIN!" The obese doctor screamed in frustration, his plans crumbling before his eyes as Sonic outmaneuvered him once more.
Knowing it was the perfect moment, Sonic called out to Spelunk, who swiftly emerged from his hiding spot behind the boulders. In his right hand, Spelunk clutched the bag filled with Sulfurius shreds.
"This is what ol' Spelunk will teach you when droppin' in unannounced, you rotten interloper!" Spelunk shouted with determination.
As Sonic descended back to where Sally and Bunnie stood, Spelunk prepared himself. He wound up his arm and hurled the bag of Sulfurius into the ignited weapon of the hovercraft. Sonic, always looking out for his friends, quickly wrapped his arms around Sally's head, shielding her from the imminent eruption. Bunnie and Spelunk followed suit, finding their hiding places as the explosive reaction was about to take place.
Dr. Robotnik's eyes widened in shock as the Sulfurius exploded, sending metallic parts of the flamethrower flying in all directions. The group quickly withdrew to a safe distance, witnessing the Egg-O-Matic crash and tumble to the ground on the other end of the treacherous lava pit.
Emerging from the shadows alongside Sally and Bunnie, Sonic gracefully leaped and landed where the hovercraft had crashed, wearing his trademark confident smirk. "Nice try, Ro-Butt-Nik, but you'll have to step up your game if you want to have any chance of beating me!"
Sally stepped forward, positioning herself beside Sonic, Bunnie, and Spelunk, flanking them. "It's time to give up, Robotnik. Our world doesn't belong to you, and you'll never lay your hands on the Chaos Emeralds."
Dr. Robotnik furiously pressed a series of buttons on the control panel of his Egg-O-Matic, managing to restore the damaged hovercraft. He scowled at the blue hedgehog, his determination unshaken.
"Grr, this isn't over yet, hedgehog!" Dr. Robotnik declared, his voice filled with defiance. "You might believe you've won this round, but I have an army. And now that I know you reside here, old mole, I'll unleash wave after wave of expendable Badniks to eradicate your precious belongings. Nowhere will be safe for you! Once my master plan takes effect, you'll all beg for mercy-!"
Interrupting the round villain's speech, Spelunk hurled a chunk of a diamond at Dr. Robotnik's head, causing him to recoil in pain. "I have no interest in listenin' to your nonsense. Get off my property, you foul-smellin' egg!"
"Yowch!" Dr. Robotnik rubbed the bruised side of his head and growled menacingly. "Oh, just you wait, rodents! I'll make you pay for this!"
With his declaration echoing in the air, Dr. Robotnik took off, laughing triumphantly. But a brief yelp escaped him as he felt the effects of Spelunk's unexpected assault just moments ago.
Bunnie crossed her arms, a sense of concern evident in her voice. "A master plan, huh? That doesn't sound good."
Sonic joined in, his expression turning serious. "Yeah, we need to stay one step ahead of him."
Spelunk chuckled, offering praise to the group. "I must admit, you all pleasantly surprised me back there."
Sally stepped forward, urging Spelunk to consider their offer. "But you're not safe here, sir. Robotnik still has Badniks patrolling this area, and they'll eventually come for you. You could come with us for protection!"
Spelunk vehemently shook his head, displaying his remote. "Nonsense! I have plenty of tricks to protect my treasure in Marble Bridge. I won't need any help, but I can't thank you enough for showing me the error of my ways, Sonic."
Sonic waved his hand dismissively. "Easy there, Spelunk! Let's not get all sappy and sentimental now, alright?"
"Hehe! No worries! Leave the gushin' to Robotnik after you give him a good whack for ol' Spelunk." The old mole chuckled. "Don't worry about me, though. My caverns may be rugged, but I've got a lot of work to do! You go help others, just like you helped me."
Sally sighed, offering her advice. "Alright, but make sure to stay out of sight. You should relocate your treasure somewhere the Badniks can't find it."
Bunnie chimed in, agreeing with Sally. "She's right."
Spelunk's grin grew wider, though it carried unsettling confidence. "Oh, that glittery pile earlier? Ha! My REAL treasure is even deeper underground and protected by far more traps. Those rust buckets will never lay a finger on it!"
Sally remained skeptical but expressed gratitude. "I hope you're right, and thank you again, Spelunk."
After bidding farewell to Spelunk, who headed to his duties in the dungeons of Marble Bridge, the trio of heroes continued their journey across the surface. Soon, they stumbled upon another capsule containing small animals.
"There's another one!" Sonic exclaimed, leaping onto the switch of the capsule. "Let's give these little guys fresh air and open grass!"
With a swift press of the switch, the robust metal containment unit shattered, setting free a multitude of tiny critters. Satisfied with the successful release, Bunnie sat down, gently petting one of the critters while a bluebird landed on her shoulder. Each one displayed their gratitude in their endearing ways, bringing a smile to Bunnie's face. Meanwhile, as the critters scurried around Sally's legs, she focused on pressing buttons on Nicole and handling two Chaos Emeralds.
"Now that we have two Emeralds, we just need five more," Sally remarked, her tone filled with determination.
"And then we'll banish Robotnik for good. If Spelunk hadn't led us to that doodad of that fat jerk, we all would've been goners." Bunnie said, crossing her arms with a confident smile.
Sally nodded in agreement. "Absolutely. We must find the remaining Emeralds before Robotnik does. And we can't forget about rescuing Rotor and Antoine from those Super Badniks."
"Totally," Sonic affirmed. "The priority is to keep moving forward. But I'm ready to kick more- OUCH!"
"Sonic!" Sally's voice filled with worry.
"Are you okay?" Bunnie got up to rush over, showing concern on her face.
Sally and Bunnie's attention immediately shifted to Sonic's pained cry. Their eyes widened in concern as they noticed a deep scratch on his upper arm, blood trickling from the wound. Acting on instinct, the girls hurried to his side, and Sonic examined his arm, testing the severity of the injury by shaking it lightly.
"It's nothing," Sonic forced a smile, his tone still lacking its usual enthusiasm.
"Don't say that!" Sally glared at him, her worry evident as she tended to his arm. "Sonic, how did you get hurt?"
"I...! Uh...! Must've scraped myself on something sharp after we dealt with Eggman's flamethrower, that's all!" Sonic replied, feeling awkward as he averted his gaze toward the sky, tapping his muzzle to distract himself from the uncomfortable moment.
"Oh my stars, you've got to be more careful next time, Sugar-Hog!" Bunnie exclaimed, her voice causing Sonic to shrink slightly.
"Bunnie, let's set up camp until we're ready to move onward," Sally suggested, patting Sonic's shoulder while casting a concerned look.
Sonic tried to protest, "W-Wait, I'm fine! We need to save your friends! Let's just- OUCH!"
"You're not okay, Sonic. Do you want to bleed out or something? Stop worrying and let me help you already, okay?" Sally's voice carried authority as she silenced his protests.
Gritting his teeth as the throbbing pain persisted, Sonic's reckless desire to push forward clashed with Sally's resolute expression. She retrieved a roll of bandages and ointment from an extra pocket in her quiver, prepared for such situations. As Sonic watched Bunnie go to gather firewood, Sally gently applied the soothing salve to his upper arm, ensuring she covered the wound thoroughly before wrapping it with the bandages. Sonic couldn't help but wonder if it was too much fuss. But Sally wanted to be sure, not willing to take any chances.
"Sonic, listen, it'll be okay," Sally reassured him, her expression still marked by concern but also understanding. "I need to learn to trust myself and believe my friends will be alright. You've said it yourself before, haven't you? We'll save them from Robotnik soon. But I need to make sure you're taken care of. Okay?"
Sonic found himself captivated by Sally's words of reassurance, and they had a calming effect on the usually restless hero. He couldn't help but recall when he had been cared for by others who loved him like family. But memories of the past mixed with the painful truth. He was responsible for the rise of an evil tyrant who shattered Sally's family and kingdom.
It was still his fault, weighing heavily on his mind.
Frowning, Sonic knew he would have to gather the courage to confess to Sally eventually. But the very idea startled him, and he vigorously shook his head, trying to push aside those negative thoughts and focus on Sally. She maintained her patient gaze, waiting for his response, and Sonic, with a swift motion, conjured up his familiar cheeky smirk.
"Thanks, Sally. It looks like you're catching onto my words, huh?"
"You could say that, Sonic."
An ocean of emotions washed over Sonic and Sally as their eyes met. The world around them seemed to fade into the background. They became lost in each other's gaze. Time stood still. And at that moment, they felt an unspoken connection, as if they could understand each other without uttering a word. However, just as the tension between them was about to blossom into something more, an abrupt throat clearing broke the moment. There stood Bunnie holding a bundle of lumber with a mischievous smirk.
"Well, well, am I interruptin' somethin'?" Bunnie teased.
"Um, uh, nothing! Nothing happened! Just talking while she, well, you know?" Sonic stumbled over his words, gesturing to his bandaged arm as he chuckled nervously.
"Yeah, just talking. We'll help set up the fire over there!" Sally quickly chimed in, her smile attempting to mask any signs of unease, as she walked over to join Bunnie, hoping to change the subject.
"Look, Sally-Girl, if you two wanted to be alone, all you had to do was ask, okay?" Bunnie teased, her smirk widening and causing Sally to blush.
"Bunnie, it's not like that," Sally groaned, trying to maintain her composure. "Sonic and I were just discussing our plans once he's rested."
"Sure, sure...!" Bunnie playfully stated, sneaking a glance at Sonic behind them. "You gotta admit it, that Sugar-Hog is quite the looker."
"He's just... interesting," Sally replied, her uncertainty showing through.
"Yeah, and with speed like that, who knows what he could do to... oh, I don't know... a girl?" Bunnie giggled, continuing her playful banter and making it difficult for Sally to respond.
"W-Well, I don't know about that. But yes, Sonic's speed will give us a great advantage," Sally said, attempting to steer the conversation back to their mission.
"Wait a minute, Sally-Girl! Are you suggestin' we let him join the team?" Bunnie asked, her excitement evident in her voice.
"I don't know, maybe. But we're all on the same side, so we might as well! Who knows, with him on the team, we could win the war against Robotnik in less than a year!" Sally exclaimed, her voice filled with enthusiasm and the possibilities Sonic's presence could bring.
"I think that's a great idea. It'd be fun to have a man on the team. If you know what I mean, Sally-Girl?" Bunnie teased, fluttering her eyelids mischievously.
Blushing, Sally tried to maintain her composure as she grabbed some firewood from Bunnie and walked away alongside her, playfully scolding her best friend's suggestive comments. Sonic watched the two girls interact and then glanced down at his bandaged arm, deep in thought.
"It's still my responsibility, and I gotta find a way to save Sally's friends. But after everything with Dr. Kintobor, how will I tell Sal that I'm the one who caused all this pain for her? And Bunnie too? Why does everything have to be so darn difficult?"
Muttering to himself, Sonic groaned out of frustration, feeling the weight of his guilt pressing upon him. But he knew that one day when the time was right, he would have to gather the courage to tell Sally the truth. For now, he needed to stay strong for the sake of his new friends and perhaps even for his own sake.
Startled by one of the girls calling for assistance with the campfire, Sonic snapped out of his contemplation. One way or another, he would have the chance to tell Sally the truth. But for now, he needed to hold on and keep pushing forward for the sake of their mission and their growing bond as a team.
Dr. Robotnik reclined inside the confines of his Egg-O-Matic, his frustration palpable as he muttered a string of expletives under his breath, venting his displeasure at Sonic's audacious antics. Meanwhile, his diminutive nephew appeared on the monitor screen, observing the bloated human with a mixture of trepidation and curiosity. A bandage adorned Dr. Robotnik's head, a painful reminder of the vicious blow inflicted by Spelunk's diamond.
With his arms defiantly crossed, the tyrannical scientist's contorted visage spoke volumes to Snively. Dr. Robotnik had failed to secure the Chaos Emeralds and beat Sonic. As for Snively, his appearance betrayed signs of perspiration and agitation, evident as he feverishly pressed buttons on his control panel back in the heart of Robotropolis.
"What could be so important that you've interrupted my brooding, Snively? Can't you see I'm seething with anger after the trouble I've endured? Argh! How dare that senile mole! Striking me with a diamond of all things on this wretched planet!" Dr. Robotnik snapped, increasingly irritated by his nephew's untimely call, demanding his undivided attention.
The short human mustered up the courage to speak despite his uncle's explosive reaction. "W-Well, sir," he stammered, "our network has detected the presence of yet another Chaos Emerald. It appeared in Spring Yard Casino, and I've already dispatched a contingent of Badniks to commence the search. However, there's something else of note, sir!"
Before Snively could continue, Dr. Robotnik pounded his fists onto the control panel, emitting a deep groan of frustration. "Oh, for the love of machinery, Snively! What new calamity has befallen us now? My patience is thin, and I won't tolerate any more delays. Speak up, and tell me what this "something else" is!"
"I'll send you the details, Dr. Robotnik," Snively hurriedly replied, his fingers dancing across the keyboard to relay the information. A moment later, an image appeared on the screen, revealing a recently discovered poster. "One of our Fly-Bots stumbled upon a live event from Spring Yard Casino. It appears to be an extreme obstacle racecourse, littered with pinball barriers throughout the city. And guess what, sir? The Chaos Emerald serves as the grand prize, accompanied by a cash reward of ten thousand dollars for the victor."
"What?!" Dr. Robotnik thundered, leaning forward against the screen, causing Snively to recoil in fear. "That conniving Breezie has some nerve! She was supposed to focus on making mobians miserable and cheating them out of their money and property, not orchestrating competitions with our Chaos Emeralds at stake!"
With his tone tinged with both boredom and concern, Snively couldn't help but question his uncle's continued tolerance of Breezie's antics. "Sir, forgive me for asking, but why do you continue to put up with Breezie? We're aware of her nature and how she operates on her terms. That's precisely why you tasked me with recruiting those Marxio Brothers."
"And we BOTH know they are supposed to be in charge of gathering resources for me and keeping Breezie from doing things that go out of my way for my total dominance of Mobius! I'll have those three dolts robotized if they fail me against that hedgehog with the Super Badnik!"
The expression on Dr. Robotnik's face sent shivers down Snively's spine. It was a volatile mix of frustration and ferocity as the mad scientist struggled to maintain his composure. He couldn't afford to lose his cool in front of his nephew, especially after the recent defeats inflicted by Sonic and Princess Acornia. Though he attempted to hide it, his troubled state was evident as he groaned heavily.
"That reminds me, Snively," Dr. Robotnik reluctantly inquired, his voice laced with annoyance. "When is Miles finished with the new designs for my Badnik Horde? And where is he currently? I'd like to see him."
Snively gulped audibly, his nervous grin now transformed into an expression of utter devastation. "Um, well... the truth is, Miles, is not currently present. I, uh, sent him on a..."
Dr. Robotnik's voice grew more stern as he interrupted, demanding clarification. "Where exactly did you send him, Snively?"
"I, uh... Oh, dear!" Snively's voice cracked, betraying his mounting anxiety as he anticipated his uncle's wrath upon hearing his response. "In an attempt to acquire more Badnik parts and potentially locate the Chaos Emerald, I thought it became reasonable to send him out... to Spring Yard Casino, sir."
Dr. Robotnik's fury rippled through his entire being, causing him to tremble with suppressed anger. He took a moment to collect himself, the Egg-O-Matic growing eerily quiet as he contemplated his next move.
"Snively, I have tolerated your numerous blunders thus far," Dr. Robotnik spoke through gritted teeth, his face contorted with a renewed wave of anger. "However, when it concerns my plans for Miles, he can't be involved in any activities unless I explicitly give the order! How dare you inform me you allowed him to venture off without my explicit permission!"
Snively's voice trembled as he attempted to explain himself under Dr. Robotnik's furious gaze. "I'm truly sorry, sir, but Miles insisted. It seems he had prior knowledge of Breezie's contest even before I did, sir! I swear, I didn't anticipate his infatuation with participating alone. I only informed him about the Chaos Emerald we were tracking! I-I promise you, sir, this won't happen again! I'll immediately order Miles to return!"
Dr. Robotnik abruptly interrupted Snively, dismissing his previous plan. Confusion washed over the nephew's face as he struggled to comprehend the sudden change in direction. "Forget that!" Dr. Robotnik barked, his voice carrying a sense of urgency. "I must return to Robotropolis immediately for urgent repairs on the Egg-O-Matic! As for you, Snively, you will fly over to Spring Yard Casino and locate Miles. Find out what he's doing there!"
Snively's irritation and confusion became apparent as he processed Dr. Robotnik's instructions. He didn't want to deal with Miles, and his tone carried a mixture of annoyance and exasperation. "But, sir, what about the hedgehog? And why should I concern myself with that brat if he gets trapped or destroyed by the Super Badnik? It's what he deserves."
Dr. Robotnik's response was swift and unwavering. "Because you're the one who sent him there without fully comprehending that Breezie would act independently! You've been briefed extensively on the Miracle Planet project I assigned to you, so now you'll serve as a babysitter for now! As for Sonic, we'll keep him and the princess under surveillance with the Fly-Bots as a precautionary measure. We have already wasted valuable time. Once this situation becomes resolved, you will get back to work!"
Snively's heart sank as he reflected on his predicament. He admitted that he never desired the responsibility of having Miles as another assistant under his uncle's command. However, he also understood that Dr. Robotnik always had plans for them both, ready to exploit any opportunity to further his dream of the Robotnik Empire. As a result, Snively felt his spirit crushed by Dr. Robotnik's tyranny, leaving him devoid of pride and dignity.
The fear of his uncle consumed him, making it impossible for Snively to express his true desires or challenge Dr. Robotnik's authority. While he harbored ambitions of seizing power and overthrowing his uncle's reign, the all-encompassing terror Dr. Robotnik instilled within him held him back. Snively knew he had to bide his time, patiently waiting for the right moment to make his move and take action against his oppressor.
Deep within Snively's heart was a flicker of determination. He longed for a day to rise above his fear and claim his power. Until then, he would play the obedient subordinate, carefully plotting and strategizing, preparing for the opportunity that would eventually present itself. Snively knew that his path to freedom and his chance to challenge Dr. Robotnik's rule would require patience, cunning, and unwavering resolve.
"Yes, Dr. Robotnik," Snively responded gloomily, his gaze downcast and a flicker of resentment in his eyes. "As you command."
