"Sonic, we need to talk. Now."
Sonic's demeanor shifted as he took in the weight behind those words. His usually vibrant face drooped slightly, his quills bristling with anticipation and certainty about the impending conversation with the princess. Sally's unwavering gaze met his own, arms folded unflinchingly, her stern expression etched upon her features. The piercing blue eyes seemed to penetrate Sonic's very being.
A sigh escaped the lips of the speedy hero as he braced himself, fully aware that he was about to face the consequences. However, Sonic's mind was preoccupied with concerns for Tails' safety. Given his worries, he wasn't in the mood for this confrontation. Observing the scuffle between Sonic and Sally, the rest of the team had already taken notice. Antoine, in particular, shot a hostile glance at Sonic, his disapproval evident for daring to get close to the love of his life.
"What's the point of discussing this, Sal?" Sonic tilted his head, his gaze fixed on the distant Starlight Highway. "We've got to keep moving before Ro-Butt-Nik snatches another Chaos Emerald around here!"
As Sonic moved to continue, Sally abruptly pulled him back by the arm. "Sonic, Bunnie is still injured. Rotor has been working hard to repair her arm after she put herself in danger. We'll search for the next Chaos Emerald, but first, I need an explanation."
Sonic's face faltered before he regained his composure and pulled his arm from Sally's grasp. "Geez, Sally, no need to be so harsh. If this is all about pushing Bunnie to take that risk, I'm sorry if my words weren't perfect. Are you satisfied now? Do you want a medal too?"
Sally shook her head, determined to continue her point. "Cut it out, Sonic! Ever since you helped save my friends, I'm starting to notice some of the things you have told me. Like when you visited your uncle in Mobotropolis and escaped the invasion on your father's plane. But something is going on that you're not telling me about."
Torn with inner turmoil, Sonic gazes at the ground and utters, "I... I feel... Just leave it alone, Sally!"
"Hold on a minute," Rotor interrupted his work on Bunnie's robotic arm, turning to face Sonic and Sally with a puzzled expression. "What's going on here?"
"I am curious about this as well," Antoine chimed in, arms crossed in a mixture of interest and disrespect.
Bunnie interjected, her voice carrying concern. "Robotnik has been braggin' quite a bit about being friends with Sugar-Hog in the past," she stated, extending her hand toward Rotor.
Rotor turned back to Sonic, his expression troubled. "Sonic, is that true?" he asked, his voice tinged with concern.
Sonic appeared tense, trying to downplay the situation. "Guys, there's nothing to worry about! You're making a big deal out of nothing!" he chuckled, attempting to sneak past the princess. But his efforts were in vain.
Aware of Sonic's evasion tactics, Sally positioned herself in his path, blocking his way with her arm. "Sonic..." she muttered.
Sonic let out a sigh. "What?" he asked, folding his arms and tapping his foot impatiently.
"I need the whole truth," Sally pleaded, her voice tinged with sadness. "Back in Jungle Labyrinth, Bunnie and I fought against one of Robotnik's Badniks, and it mentioned things about you and him. I tried not to believe it, but doubts crept in. Were you more than just a visitor to Mobotropolis? Did something happen between you and Dr. Kintobor before he became Robotnik and took over my home? I want to understand, Sonic, but I need you to be honest."
Sally's words hung heavy in the air, leaving Sonic unsettled. "Sal, I've never lied to you..." he began but was cut off.
"Please, Sonic," she pleaded again, her voice trembling. "Just tell me. I'm going to worry if you don't."
"I don't want you to worry, Sally!" Sonic vigorously waves his hands in a dismissive gesture, trying many attempts to push aside the situation, yet none of them prove successful.
"I AM WORRIED!" Sally's eyebrows furrow even deeper. Sonic notices the anguish in her eyes as they bore into his own. Witnessing her distress was heart-wrenching. She didn't deserve to feel this way, and he certainly didn't deserve to be the cause of her worries.
"Answer her question, you scoundrel! Show some respect to the princess!" Antoine interjected, drawing his sword and scowling at Sonic.
"Antoine, calm down!" Rotor interjected, his face filled with concern for the escalating tension.
Sally silenced Antoine with a subtle hand gesture, and he reluctantly backed down. Sonic briefly contemplated running away and leaving Sally behind, taking T-Pup. However, he quickly dismissed the thought. Sally's stance and unspoken message made it clear that she wanted him to explain himself and be accountable for his actions. The strain in her posture hinted at suppressed anger.
The truth of Sonic's indirect role in the downfall of Mobotropolis was not something he could easily explain within a few minutes. He knew that Sally wouldn't be satisfied with any more evasions, and he didn't blame her. With no other option but silence, Sonic let out a defeated sigh.
"Alright, alright. I was a resident in Mobotropolis with my uncle," Sonic admitted, avoiding direct eye contact as his gaze shifted to the perplexed group.
"Sugar-Hog, why didn't you tell us?" Bunnie managed to utter before Sonic continued, revealing the true extent of his story.
"Because I didn't know what to do!" Sonic locked eyes with the startled cyborg rabbit, struggling to control his emotions. "And let's face it, all of this is my fault! If I hadn't been so reckless, Dr. Kintobor wouldn't have turned into...!"
Sonic's voice trailed off, and he began to tremble. Sensing his distress, Sally reached out to him, concerned. "Sonic?" she called out softly.
Sonic's frown deepened as he continued his revelation. "Life wasn't easy for me. My speed was uncontrollable, and people didn't want someone like me to cause trouble around them. I always had this drive to be faster, to push my limits, but there was always a cap on how far I could go."
As Sally listened to his words, her stern expression softened, and her thoughts raced. "What happened to Sonic? What made him feel the need to lie to me? Was it something related to his family? Did he go through something traumatic? Was he a victim of bullying? None of this makes sense. Did someone...?"
"That's when I crossed paths with Dr. Kintobor," Sonic continued, his voice filled with nostalgia. "He was a kind-hearted man who wanted to help others and create things for their benefit. The details are hazy since it was a long time ago. But something happened to him when we found one of the Chaos Emeralds. Dr. Kintobor became consumed with an experiment. One that he needed my assistance with until something went terribly wrong..."
Sally's mournful expression gradually transformed into a profound shock as she absorbed Sonic's account of his experiments with Dr. Kintobor. Sally kept listening, despite her intention not to pry into his personal story.
"I didn't realize how fast I was going. I was too caught up in what Dr. Kintobor would say. I didn't see what happened in less than ten seconds. I was already hurt when he yelled at me, and I just wanted to disappear. So I ran away from Mobotropolis and stayed in a forest for weeks. Uncle Chuck was able to find me, though. But nothing prepared us for when we got back to Mobotropolis."
Sonic recounted the night he and his uncle parted ways, leaving no detail spared. The news hit Sally particularly hard, but she remained composed, mirroring the reactions of the others. Sonic was determined not to hold back any longer, and he didn't want this revelation to further complicate his already challenging life.
Bunnie became caught in disbelief and anxiety as she absorbed Sonic's story. Memories of her experience with Dr. Robotnik's Robotizer resurfaced. Pieces of the puzzle began to align, and questions started to merge, hinting at a possible explanation for what Sonic was implying.
Everything Sonic revealed shed light on the oppression he had endured, masked by his constant need for speed and his cocky demeanor. While these aspects of Sonic had sometimes proven overwhelming for those around him, Sally couldn't help but recognize the interconnections forming before her eyes.
Sally remembered the disastrous Grey Emerald Project led by Dr. Kintobor, which her father brought up when addressing the public. King Acornia was told that a group of overlanders had infiltrated and destroyed everything, resulting in the loss of the precious gemstone.
Charles had to leave Mobotropolis to search for his lost nephew due to an error in judgment between him and King Acornia, leading to his removal as Minister of Science. In a regrettable turn of events, Dr. Kintobor was appointed in his place.
All of this occurred during Elias and Sally's time as heirs to the Kingdom of Acornia before Dr. Robotnik's rebellion shattered the once joyful harmony that Sally cherished. As Sonic finished his story, Sally tried to process this revelation. She observed Sonic, his arms crossed over his chest, head bowed down in silence.
"So, you see," Sonic looked up at Sally's tear-stained eyes, his frown still present. "This is all on me. It isn't something I wanted for anyone, but it happened, and I'm so sorry for causing you so much crap."
A searing pain coursed through Sally's being as she blinked away the tears that had welled up in her horrified eyes. The initial shock was swiftly overtaken by a surge of anger from within, causing her to hyperventilate and instinctively clutch her head with a trembling hand. Emotions stormed inside her, threatening to engulf her in darkness. But even amid her anguish, memories of Julayla's teachings were etched deeply into Sally's mind.
"Forgiveness is not about erasing the past; it's about freeing ourselves from its grasp, choosing compassion over resentment, and embracing the power of healing."
Recalling those words from Julayla's honeyed voice, Sally fought back against the despair that threatened to consume her. At this moment, the chipmunk girl's focus shifted entirely toward Sonic, recognizing the torment he was grappling with. It tore at her heart to witness his distress, knowing that he had unintentionally brought about the existence of Dr. Robotnik, ultimately resulting in the loss of her home and the separation from her family.
"If you're looking for someone to hate, then go to town on me," Sonic stated firmly.
Sally's eyes filled with confusion as she fixed her gaze on Sonic, vigorously shaking her head. "No."
"What?!" Sonic was taken aback, his voice tinged with frustration as he raised his voice. "All of this is my fault, Sally-!"
Oddly enough, Sally disrupted his sentence more emotionally. "Sonic, stop blaming yourself! None of this is your fault!" She attempted to reach out a trembling hand to touch his arm, seeking to provide comfort.
However, Sonic shook his head and stepped away from the princess, evading her touch. "But Sally, I was there! I left everyone behind and didn't even realize the consequences. Innocent people suffered because of me!"
"No, Sonic! You were just a child. You couldn't have known what would happen. Robotnik's actions are his own responsibility, not yours."
"That's because I played right into his hands!" Sonic's fury surged through him, causing his voice to tremble. The group was taken aback by the furious blue hedgehog. Never had Sonic shown this much emotion. "How many lives did I ruin?! Bunnie, the others... they were affected because of me. Don't you get it?! I'VE BECOME THE CAUSE OF ROBOTNIK'S ENTIRE EXISTENCE!"
Sonic found himself reaching his breaking point. He instinctively covered his ears and clenched his eyes shut with all his might. The team, particularly Sally, felt pulled along with him, with their emotions rattled and filled with sorrow. Even a sad whine could be heard from T-Pup. Bunnie's disbelief was palpable as she struggled to process the blue hedgehog's words that had pierced through her heart.
The realization hit her with a force she had never anticipated. All the anguish and trials she had endured as a cyborg rabbit had stemmed from the person she had considered a friend. Her gaze shifted, involuntarily drawn toward her mechanical limbs, a constant reminder of the sacrifices she had made and the challenges she had overcome.
Tears streamed down Bunnie's face as she glanced back at Sonic, her eyes reflecting a mixture of hurt, disappointment, and a flicker of hope that this revelation was a misunderstanding. "T-That's not true! You didn't cause any of this to happen to me!"
"I don't expect forgiveness or understanding from you all," Sonic confessed, his eyes filled with sorrow as he looked at Bunnie. "But what I did happen, and I'm truly sorry for the trouble I've caused you. I wish I had been there to prevent your robotization, but I can't undo the past."
"Are you out of your mind?" Rotor's voice oozed with frustration and pain as he approached Sonic, having just repaired Bunnie's robotized arm. "Don't you think that's a bit much?! We would've stayed stuck in those Super Badniks if you hadn't come along. Bunnie, Sally, Antoine, and I come from different backgrounds, but that doesn't mean we can't understand you!"
Sonic made a determined effort to regain control of the conversation. "I was there when it happened. I wasn't supposed to be, and people got hurt."
As he observed the upset expressions on everyone's faces, Sonic turned to leave. "So go ahead, think whatever you want about me. It's fine. You can all go home safely now that I've already rescued enough of you. I'm heading straight to the big man to save Tails and end this nightmare."
"WHAT?!" Sally's words burst out, her arms gesturing wildly to challenge Sonic's reasoning. "Is that it? You're just walking away from us?! None of us want you to go, Sonic. We can still try to help you!"
"She's right, Sonic," Rotor interjected. "Do you think saying all that makes this hurt less? You've made some serious mistakes, yeah. But we're all still willing to lend a hand-"
"En garde!"
Before Rotor could continue, Antoine attempted to strike Sonic with his sword. However, the quick-witted hero anticipated the attack. Sonic swiftly twisted, catching hold of Antoine's sword with one hand and using the other to lift him up and over, sending him crashing to the ground a few feet away.
"Antoine!" Sally exclaimed.
"Antoine, what in tarnation are ya doin'?!" Bunnie demanded in shock.
"Hey, buddy, you better drop that," Sonic warned, keeping a watchful eye on Antoine as he got back on his feet. "It won't do you any good, trust me."
"Au contraire, you ignorant swine!" Antoine shouted, pointing his sword forward. "You have the right to remain silent! You are as guilty as Dr. Robotnik for betraying the Kingdom of Acornia!"
The brown coyote charged at Sonic again, relentlessly swinging his blade to strike down the hedgehog. Sonic skillfully evaded each attack, moving with his trademark speed while still trying to reason with Antoine.
"Come on, Ant! I don't want to fight you!" Sonic deftly avoided Antoine's strikes, agilely dodging and ducking away.
Convinced that words would not sway Antoine and growing weary of the relentless assault, Sonic shifted gears. As Antoine aimed another blow toward his torso, Sonic swiftly grabbed the sword a few inches away from his body.
"That's it!" Sonic gritted his teeth, his patience wearing thin with the continuous attacks.
Sonic raised his leg high, kicking Antoine's sword out of his grip and catching it mid-air in one fluid motion. He then swiftly brought Antoine down to the ground. The tension escalated as Sonic twirled the sword, seemingly preparing to strike Antoine. The team members couldn't help but scream in panic, fearing the worst.
When Antoine opened his eyes, he realized the sword had struck the ground beside his head, narrowly missing him. Although relieved that he was unharmed, he found himself unable to stand as the blade had become lodged in the shoulder of his jacket, pinning him to the ground.
"I don't walk. I run," Sonic stated firmly, his eyes closed, bidding his farewell. "I'm sorry, guys, but I must do this myself. Please, stay away from me. I'll keep my promise to save everyone and make amends. My Uncle Chuck taught me one thing: to let my speed guide me and never resort to killing, even in revenge. It's been real, guys. See you later."
"Sonic..." Sally whispered.
Sonic then glanced toward T-Pup. "Hey, little buddy. Let's go and bring your master back."
With a sorrowful whine, T-Pup obediently followed Sonic, hovering over to join him. The duo raced off toward Starlight Highway, leaving Sally and the group behind, possibly for the last time. The Freedom Fighters were left in disarray. Not only grappling with the revelations of the First Robotnik War but also with the weight of Sonic's actions.
Sally watched with sadness as Sonic departed with T-Pup. Losing such a valuable new ally weighed heavily on her, and she couldn't help but feel partly responsible for pushing Sonic to reveal the truth, just like everyone else. A single tear rolled down her cheek, a testament to the emotions swirling within her.
"We're all standing by you, Sally," Rotor reassured, placing a comforting hand on the sad chipmunk girl's shoulder. "You've never led us astray."
Speaking up with an irate expression, Bunnie directed her glare at Antoine. "What were you thinkin'?!"
"Yeah, Antoine, care to explain?" Rotor chimed in.
"N-Non, non! You have misunderstood me!" Antoine stammered, attempting to free himself from his predicament. "T-That hedgehog simply abandoned us when he, how do you say, spilled the beans?"
Sally let out a frustrated sigh as Rotor deadpanned at Antoine. "Smooth move, Antoine."
"What?" Antoine shrugged, wearing a disapproving expression. "Is that not what you call it when someone walks out on you, non? Has that fool not done enough to us already? He admitted that he jeopardized us all and kept it a secret from my princess."
"But it ain't his fault, and you attacked him for it, Antoine! You shame yourself!" Bunnie angrily jabbed a finger at his chest, making him recoil slightly.
"Moi?!" Antoine exclaimed in shock, wearing an unpleasant expression. "I do not understand what you all see in that troublemaker!"
"Antoine, listen here," Bunnie firmly held onto his arm, gaining his full attention. "Shut your trap, or I'll shut it for you with my bionics."
A tense silence filled the air as each teammate pondered their next move after learning about Sonic's revelations. With Sonic's abrupt departure, uneasy gazes settled on everyone's faces. Antoine wore a somewhat indifferent expression, though his head drooped slightly. However, it became Sally who voiced the collective sentiment, except for Antoine, who raised an eyebrow at the princess.
"We're going after him," Sally declared calmly and steadily to her team.
"Oh, but that is not safe, my princess! I-I suggest we return to Knothole, oui?" Antoine quickly interjected, standing beside her with a stutter, only to be grabbed by the collar.
"I said we're going after him," Sally spoke with a dangerous tone, firm enough to convey her determination. "When all of this began, Sonic's first instinct was to help us because it's the right thing to do. Not for any personal gain. So be grateful that Sonic rescued you from that Super Badnik."
Pushing the fearful coyote away from her, Sally walked over to Bunnie, holding both her hands. "We'll face Dr. Robotnik with Sonic because that's what we do as Freedom Fighters."
"We're with you!" Rotor exclaimed, throwing a fist in the air. "Five heads are better than one."
"We'll show that rotten Robotnik what the Freedom Fighters are capable of!" Bunnie flexed her robotized arm, grateful to be fully repaired.
"Why do I have a bad feeling about this?" Antoine muttered to himself, only to be met with frowns from everyone, causing him to nervously retreat back into his bravado. "W-Wherever my p-p-princess goes, I a-am g-going too!"
"Sometimes I wonder why we let him come along…" Rotor thought, exasperated.
"Let's go!" Sally pointed in the direction of Sonic's trail leading to Starlight Highway. "We're following Sonic."
As the tranquil dusk settled over the city skyline along Starlight Highway, Snively's hover unit glided silently above the bleak streets, casting its gaze upon a group of rowdy mobians who were clearly under the influence of illicit substances, causing chaos in their wake. The hover unit's presence raised suspicions among other downtrodden gangs.
Flying close to Snively was a pair of android Badniks known as Egg-Robos. These mechanical beings were shaped like eggs with arms and legs, intentionally designed to resemble Dr. Robotnik. Armed with laser pistols, the Egg-Robos diligently followed Snively's lead. At this moment, Snively's primary objective was to secure the recently discovered Chaos Emerald within the territory controlled by Ebony O'Hare.
Within the confines of the hover unit, Snively quickly pinpointed the rabbit mobster himself, Ebony, in the dimly lit alleyway. Ebony possessed predominantly black fur, with a snowy white muzzle featuring cheek tufts pointing upwards. His long ears revealed a striking shade of blue on the inside, and a single earring adorned his right ear. Ebony's attire consisted of a dark blue vest with a white collar, a vertically striped button-up shirt tucked neatly beneath, a tie, and pants. He sported stylish, oversized shield sunglasses in a vibrant blue hue, a white fedora hat, gloves, and black shoes with blue soles.
Surrounded by his esteemed subordinates, Ebony stood in the company of a burly, impeccably dressed bulldog named Blackjack, who exuded an aura of strength. Additionally, a captivating female vixen named Foxxie was always by Ebony's side, lending an air of allure to his entourage. Ebony's authority was further bolstered by numerous other members brandishing various weapons, showcasing their unwavering loyalty to their leader.
"Well, well! What a delightful sight," Snively remarked as he landed his hovercraft alongside the Egg-Robos and stepped out. "Greetings, Ebony."
Ebony, accompanied by Blackjack wielding spiked brass knuckles, responded curtly, "Let's make this simple. We can either do business," Ebony gestured toward his henchman, "or my boy, Blackjack here, can give you the business. So, what do you want?"
"I've come to retrieve the Chaos Emerald. I know you have it," Snively stated matter-of-factly.
"You honestly think my crew and I are just goin' to hand it over, bow down to the doc?" Ebony sneered, glaring at Snively while playing with an orange Chaos Emerald. "I run this town, pal! Don't you forget it!"
"Oh?" Snively took on a slimy tone as a sadistic smile crept across his face. "But time is of the essence here! You're nothing but a lowlife who's way over his head and can't even fight his own battles, Ebony. Haven't you realized that all of South Island will soon fall under the rule of the Robotnik Empire?"
"Give me a break!" Foxxie scoffed. "Puddin' here has done a damn fine job keepin' our people safe and takin' down anyone who tries to mess with us, thanks to Blackjack."
"That's because I brought order and law to your gang of misfits," Snively continued as two Egg-Robos aimed their laser guns at the group. "Sooner or later, the time will come when you pay for your crimes and face the consequences of your actions. Need I remind you of the penalty for opposing the wishes of your supreme ruler? Especially mine?"
In an instant, the smile vanished from Ebony's face, and several followers recoiled at the thought of their fate being worse than death.
Robotization.
"N-No, sir!" One of the goons screamed in panic. "Not after what happened to Bosco last time you were here! You can do whatever you want! Order me around, kill me, just please don't put me in that cursed Robotizer!"
The mention of the Robotizer elicited an evil chuckle from Snively as he extended his hand. "All you need to do is hand over that Chaos Emerald, and your people won't be harmed, Ebony. Given our mutual understanding, you will continue to serve the Robotnik Empire."
"Puddin', please," Foxxie pleaded. "This has to be a trick."
"Sorry, babe," Ebony sighed, reluctantly conceding. He grumbled before finally handing the Chaos Emerald to Snively. "So, how can I be of service, Snively?"
"Very simple, minions," the dwarf snapped his fingers, prompting an Egg-Robo to project a holographic image of the Freedom Fighters, especially Sonic. "Princess Sally and her gang have caused me enough trouble already. But this hedgehog has become a thorn in my uncle's side that needs to be dealt with. Your gang's primary objective is to capture any of these pests and bring them in, dead or alive. Though I wouldn't mind if they were all lying lifeless on the ground. Clear?"
"We'll get them," Ebony promised, his determination evident as Blackjack cracked his knuckles. "We won't let you down."
Unbeknownst to the group, an invisible figure perched on one of the nearby buildings. After hearing their conversation, the figure swiftly retreated back into the shadows.
Beneath their nimble feet, the ground shimmered with a metallic green hue, accentuated by the glow of the light posts that lined both sides of the walkway. Sonic and T-Pup blazed past each post in a frantic race. Even Sonic couldn't deny that this location appeared even more unfinished and fragmented than the vibrant Spring Yard Casino. The settlement on South Island seemed to have been abandoned and forsaken in the aftermath of the devastating Great War.
Every corner of this desolate place seemed to offer numerous alternative pathways, enticing Sonic and T-Pup to embark on thrilling adventures. The routes were adorned with exhilarating twists, loop-de-loops that defied gravity, and strategically placed see-saws that propelled them to greater heights using iron balls. Additionally, colossal fans created powerful gusts, challenging their progress and forcing them to adapt and maneuver skillfully.
The cityscape was adorned with multiple gray gilders and scattered construction cones, hinting at ongoing development and occasional repairs. Sonic sped through these sections, his mind consumed by plenty of emotions. Sonic felt remorseful for his actions, realizing his mistake had caused pain and turmoil. However, he also couldn't comprehend why Sally still needed him.
Sonic hesitated, contemplating his decision before forcefully pushing aside his doubts. "Don't even think about it, hedgehog! They can't trust you anymore."
About to resume his run, Sonic and T-Pup found themselves standing in the middle of the street. Surprisingly, there were no Badniks in sight, just various thugs going about their business late at night. Sonic and T-Pup sped around, searching for any signs of Badnik activity. Maybe they were just skilled at hiding.
But there was nothing.
"Well, what do you know? Can't spot any other Badniks in this run-down town!" Sonic scanned the area, glancing at the starry night sky above. "Man, I wish Mobotropolis had such a clear view of the stars."
As he mentioned this, memories of his challenging childhood flooded back. Memories of failure in saving Uncle Chuck and Longclaw. Memories of begging for food, practicing his moves on inanimate objects, and exploring new places. He didn't have enough money to buy food or rent a hotel room, so he resorted to stealing a sleeping bag and getting used to going hungry.
Sure, some kind-hearted people offered him food. But Sonic tried not to rely on their charity unless he was on the verge of starvation. Uncle Chuck had always warned him not to depend too much on others, so whenever someone wanted to take care of him permanently, he would dash off, never getting too close to anyone like that again. The memory of losing Uncle Chuck and Longclaw resurfaced, reminding him of the pain and forcing him to run away.
Sonic knew since he was a child that boys should never cry. He would do many things, but weeping was not one of them. Not when he was hurt, not when he was scared. And if tears threatened to surface, he would fight them with all his might. He would ensure that those tears never saw the light of day.
What kind of hero would he be if he cried?
Certainly, not one who was tough.
Even as a child, Sonic would have given anything to be considered sturdy and stable. And even now, as an adult, he took pride in never shedding a tear, except for his infant years. He had come close, sure.
Shaking his head, Sonic wondered why the memories wouldn't fade away. Dr. Kintobor was another father figure he remembered besides Uncle Chuck. He had trusted that man more than anything until now. The doc was gone, but his teachings remained vivid in Sonic's mind. It felt strange to think about it, but his once cheerful human friend had imparted life lessons to Sonic before transforming into the mad tyrant he had become.
Live life.
There's always a glimmer of goodness in someone.
Follow your passions.
Family, whether bound by blood or not, is what truly matters.
"Dr. Kintobor, Uncle Chuck, Longclaw," Sonic muttered to himself, capturing T-Pup's attention before turning his gaze back toward the direction he had fled from the Freedom Fighters. "I could have saved you, I should have saved you, but I will find a way. I know what I need to do now."
T-Pup's excitement grew as Sonic turned around, ready to return to Sally's group. However, his movement was abruptly halted as a spotlight illuminated him and the canine robot from above, courtesy of Snively's hover unit.
"Oh, what's this now?" The blue hedgehog frowned.
"It's all over, you spiky little pincushion!" Snively's voice boomed from the microphone in the hovercraft. "I finally have you outnumbered now that you're all alone. Once you're out of the picture, disposing of the other pests will be a piece of cake."
"Pfft, really? You're looking for me?" Sonic retorted mockingly. "Well, I've got better things to do than wander around and end up with a bullet in the face. Besides, I was wondering when you would show up, Short-Stack!"
"It's Dr. Julian Snively to you, mobian!" Snively snapped back from his hover unit. "I'm sure you understand that I can't simply let you pass, right? This is where your adventure comes to an end."
"Well, that's what the big man wants, right?" Sonic shrugged. "There's a small chance of that happening if you want to take that bet."
"Are you sure about that? Because that sounds like a sucker's bet."
"Yeah, but every sucker loves eggs, like you, Shorty!"
An annoyed growl emanated from the hover unit's microphone, followed by a blaring horn that summoned multiple thugs to surround Sonic and T-Pup. Scanning the area for any potential escape routes, Sonic found none. His attention then focused on Ebony O'Hare, who emerged from his gang alongside Foxxie and Blackjack.
"Whoa," Sonic gasped, taking in the massive height of the bulldog before him.
"It's time for you to surrender and come with us, homeboy," Ebony ordered, twirling his gun. "There's no need for this to turn bloody."
"Well, it looks like someone ordered an extra-large serving of clobbering, topped with punches, kicks, and a side of a total beatdown." Sonic wiped his nose in a cocky manner, assuming his fighter stance. "Hope you guys have a big appetite!"
"We're just doin' what we can to survive in this world," Ebony responded, pointing forward. "Take him down!"
The brawl erupted as a few thugs advanced on a smug Sonic, with one of them raising a crowbar to strike. But the hedgehog swiftly ducked, wearing a grin as he watched the crowbar swing harmlessly over his head. If Sonic had turned around to witness his handiwork, he would have seen the surprise on the goon's face.
However, Sonic's adrenaline surged once more. Balancing with one hand, he delivered a powerful kick, sending the goon crashing into his comrades. Seizing the opportunity, Sonic leaped toward another thug, skillfully evading several gunshots before landing a devastating blow to the thug's jaw, causing teeth to scatter.
"I guess I'll have to do that with every other deadbeat like this, huh?" Sonic muttered, transforming into a destructive whirlwind as he approached the remaining crooks.
T-Pup followed closely beside Sonic as he darted around each mugger, executing spin dashes and humiliating moves that left them squealing like frightened children or crying out in pain. But then, Sonic spotted a couple of Badniks, including the Orbinauts. There weren't many Badniks present, but the Orbinauts posed a threat, along with the bomb-based Badniks known as Bomb-Bots.
"So, there are robots here, after all!" Sonic observed, skillfully avoiding any damage aimed at him.
Sonic deftly dodged two spiked balls before swiftly taking out two Orbinauts and freeing the trapped animals inside, leaving a trail of scattered metal parts in his wake. As a Bomb-Bot approached Sonic's sneaker, it suddenly halted and remained motionless.
Then, a small latch near the top of the spherical robot opened, releasing a tiny flame that landed on the Bomb-Bot's fuse. The flame ignited the fuse, slowly inching its way down.
"WHOA!" Sonic tried to dodge, but he was too close, and the Bomb-Bot exploded right in front of him, sending flaming ashes flying in all directions.
Sonic managed to avoid most of the debris, but a small flame caught onto the bottom of his sock and the top of his shoe.
"AH!" Sonic yelled, quickly patting down the fire since it was relatively small.
However, it left a small burn mark on his sock and shoe. Sonic realized these bomb-based Badniks were self-destructive when one nearly cost him his life. He spotted three more Bomb-Bots in the vicinity.
Determined, Sonic ran up to them, getting close enough to trigger their self-destruction. He then dashed back, fully aware of what would happen and precisely when it occurred.
As expected, the Bomb-Bots exploded into fiery remnants and scattered mechanical parts. Ebony could only watch, his gritted teeth revealing his irritation. He calmly signaled for Blackjack to demonstrate why he meant business. Sonic swiftly attempted to strike another Orbinaut, executing quick and precise movements.
Suddenly, Blackjack reappeared behind the blue hero, aiming to deliver a fierce blow with his massive, spiked brass-knuckled fist.
Fortunately, Sonic's instincts kicked in, prompting him to cartwheel out of the way just in time, causing Blackjack's punch to collide with debris, sending it flying. Taking advantage of their speed, Sonic and T-Pup swiftly darted into a nearby bar, seeking respite to regroup and recover.
"Okay," Sonic breathed heavily, his eyes scanning the bar. "What's next for me now?"
"What's next for you is telling us how you got Ebony's crooks after you," a gruff voice stated out of nowhere.
Sonic blinked, his gaze falling upon three detectives busy interrogating the bartender before the speedy hero abruptly burst in.
The first detective to address Sonic was a burly, green-skinned crocodile with spiky red scales running down his tail and yellow eyes. His body had a distinctive S-shape, with a broad upper body tapering into a slimmer form toward his back end and legs. His arms started off thin but gradually thickened toward the wrists. His belly, snout, and arms were light green, while the rest of his body had a dark green hue.
The crocodile sported small black shoulder pads, white gloves with black-and-orange cuffs adorned with gold buckles, and black shoes with accents of white and orange. Additional features included a gold chain around his neck, a pair of black-and-gray wireless headphones, a black leather jacket with very short sleeves, black armbands on his right arm, and a tattoo of an eight-point compass rose on his left arm.
The second detective was a purple chameleon with gold eyes and a yellow horn between them. His muzzle and a heart-shaped pattern on his torso had a peach-colored tone. He had a row of three black spikes running down his spine and a coiled tail.
His attire consisted of a thick, black neck gaiter scarf that covered his mouth, dark purple shoes with black accents, metal-reinforced arm bracers, loose-fitting pants with a utility belt to store his ninja gear, and white gloves with dark purple pads on the backs. He also wore bandage-wrapped cuffs with gold studs around his wrists and ankles.
The third detective was a juvenile bee with black-and-yellow striped markings, yellow-and-black striped antennae, translucent sky-blue wings on his back, and honey-brown eyes. He had exposed peach skin on his muzzle, two pairs of arms, and lacked a nose.
He wore an orange vest with a bee emblem on the left side, a yellow zipper, and a white collar reminiscent of a polo shirt. His shoes were white and orange with black rings and yellow zippers, and he donned white gloves with matching cuffs. On his head, he wore a black pilot's helmet with a dark pink rim and orange flight goggles. Additionally, he had a wooden slingshot with some pebbles holstered around his waist.
"Who the heck are you guys?" Sonic asked, with T-Pup growling in a protective stance. "You want a piece of me too?"
"Yo! Hold your horses, kid. We're not here to cause you or your pup any trouble. The name's Vector," the crocodile introduced himself and his team, handing Sonic a card he read. "And these are my two co-workers: Espio and Charmy. We're a group of professional problem solvers called the Chaotix Detective Agency. Our chief assigned us a case in Starlight Highway to take down Ebony for his involvement in various criminal activities."
"Detectives, huh?" Sonic raised an eyebrow, folding his arms while T-Pup remained cautious. "And you're saying Robotnik's lackey has gathered all the crooks to come after me?"
"I've been investigating the area, looking for clues to locate Ebony's hideout. That's when I witnessed Robotnik's nephew making a deal to eliminate you and Princess Sally Acornia. Ebony made a lifetime commitment after Snively took possession of a strange jewel he had found," Espio explained.
"No way!" Sonic almost exclaimed, his expression turning serious. "And here I thought things couldn't get any worse. But if they think they can harm Sal, they'll have to go through me."
Zipping in front of Sonic, Charmy's eyes sparkled with stars. "Whoa! You're the Blue Blur from the Spring Yard Casino's obstacle course! I saw you racing on TV! It's too bad you didn't win. But at least I got to see Turbo Tails win! He was so awesome!"
Now, it was Sonic's turn to look shocked. "Wait, Tails won-?"
"LAST WARNING, HEDGEHOG!" Snively's voice blared from the hover unit's microphone. "Come out of the building right now, or I'll open fire and burn everything down with you inside!"
"Looks like we won't stay here for long, huh?" Sonic said, his tone flat.
"No time for fanboying, Charmy," Vector said, turning toward the source of the voice, with Espio and Charmy following suit. "As a business, we ensure that our cases always get seen through to the end. Are you coming, Blue Blur?"
"Oh yeah," the speedy hero replied, with T-Pup barking in agreement. "And the name's Sonic, by the way."
"The pleasure's all mine," Vector smirked, cracking his knuckles. "Get ready to go wild, boys! I hope our paychecks back home come in a hefty bundle."
"Hai," Espio nodded, brandishing a couple of kunai blades.
"Time to rock 'n' roll!" Charmy grinned mischievously, clutching his trusty slingshot.
Back outside, Ebony impatiently ascended the front porch of the bar, his gun loaded and his finger hovering near the trigger. Just as he was about to speak, his words were cut short by a smoke bomb that rolled toward him, enveloping the area in a dense cloud of smoke and causing chaos.
Without a moment to waste, Ebony failed to notice the chameleon ninja's foot as it landed a powerful kick to his stomach. He was sent crashing into the walls of the building, disoriented and unable to comprehend the situation. The crowd watched in shock, and Foxxie cried out for her partner. As the smoke dissipated, Sonic and the Chaotix stood in the middle of the street, surrounded by Ebony's gunmen.
"Yo, hopscotch!" Vector called out to Ebony, who struggled to get back on his feet with the help of Blackjack. "We're here to shut you down, once and for all!"
"Alright, Blackjack, it's time for you to teach these jokers a lesson," Ebony commanded with authority, and the bulldog nodded in response. "Give 'em a good thrashin'."
With the other thugs stepping back, Sonic and the Chaotix braced themselves as Blackjack stomped menacingly toward them, causing the ground to tremble. The bulldog emitted a low growl. A sound so deep it was almost incomprehensible. Sonic knew they became prepared to face an opponent with destructive strength far beyond a regular mobian. With a synchronized kick forward, the battle in Starlight Highway was about to commence.
