"Take a swing, big guy!" Sonic called out to the bulldog, leading T-Pup and the Chaotix. "Let's see if you can handle five against one!"
Flashing with speed, Sonic dodged Blackjack's swing while Vector delivered a punch to his chest, pushing him back. Seizing the opportunity, Sonic went right after with a spin attack to Blackjack's face.
"Come on, Blackjack!" Ebony shouted, shaking his fist angrily. "Wipe the street with their punk asses!"
Blackjack's seething determination sent a wave of fear through Sonic as he got launched through the alley behind him. He skidded nearly twenty feet from the point of impact. When Sonic finally managed to slow down from the force, he found himself surrounded by the grimy environment of the alley. The dumpsters loomed tall, creating a piled-up mess while puddles of various substances dotted the ground.
"Is it the maid's day off?" Sonic remarked, slightly disgusted. "What a mess."
"Sonic, stick with me and your robo-dog," Vector commanded, his face showing determination. "Espio and Charmy, buy us some time!"
"Got it, Vector!" Charmy replied with a smile, pulling out his slingshot. Espio nodded in agreement.
Blackjack endured Sonic's relentless assault but quickly regained composure. Clothes unkempt, he charged again, swinging ferocious fists. Sonic dodged with lightning reflexes, landing precise strikes that left Blackjack struggling. Vector saw an opportunity and launched a flying kick to Blackjack's head, sending him crashing into the ground.
As Blackjack tried to rise, Sonic and Vector stood ready, a formidable duo combining speed, agility, strength, and resilience. Despite his aching body, Blackjack refused to give up. Roaring, he charged at Sonic and Vector, determined to prove his strength and loyalty to Ebony. The battle on Starlight Highway intensified.
"Wow, this big guy just took my attacks head-on, and he's still standing!" Sonic exclaimed, wiping the sweat off his brow as he settled back into his fighting stance.
Vector assessed the situation. "We need to wear this dude down as much as possible."
"Alright, let's do this!" Sonic grinned with determination.
On the other side, a smaller group of thugs charged forward with more on the way. Espio swiftly threw shuriken stars, dispatching and injuring the criminals. Charmy used his slingshot to knock weapons out of the hands of several thugs. Espio agilely dodged an incoming attack and countered by kicking his assailant down.
Another goon approached, wielding a crowbar, but got met with an angry shout. From behind, another thug lunged at Espio with a machete, aiming a swipe at the ninja chameleon. Espio leaped into the air, executing a flip while keeping his hands folded in front of his face. Employing a combination of a cyclonic swirl of air and his ability to camouflage, he turned himself invisible, surrounded by translucent leaves.
The thugs searched for Espio but couldn't spot him. Suddenly, one felt a strike to his gut, followed by a kick to another thug's head. More criminals received punches and kicks as Espio abandoned precision and focused on brute force. Meanwhile, Sonic spun around, targeting Blackjack's face, while Vector attempted to grapple him down.
Espio knocked out nearby goons to give his allies some breathing room, and Charmy relentlessly shot pebbles at Blackjack's head with his slingshot. T-Pup joined the fray, biting the bulldog's leg, but Blackjack swiftly tossed Sonic and Vector aside, flicking T-Pup away like a pesky fly.
Sonic managed to catch T-Pup before he crashed into a building. Blackjack turned his attention to Charmy, who was buzzing in the air and unleashed a thunderclap, sending the young bee flying. That caught Espio's attention, prompting him to spring after his friend.
"WHOA!" Charmy let out a shriek before being swiftly grabbed by Espio.
"Stay close, Charmy," the ninja chameleon instructed, landing on top of a nearby lamppost. "We can't fight through without attracting more of Ebony's men."
Ebony taunted them with a smirk, his bucktooth showing. "Blackjack doesn't take kindly to intruders in my territory. You better surrender now. So you can die the easy way or the hard way! And let me tell you, Sonic, when I say 'harder,' I mean it!"
Vector clenched his teeth while glaring at Blackjack, then glanced at Sonic. "Do you have any ideas on how to handle a guy like him?"
"Well, I don't know what kind of training this guy has gone through," Sonic replied, looking up to spot Snively's hover unit. "But Smugly still has the Chaos Emerald in his high chair. I have an idea to keep these goons busy. Are you guys with me?"
Espio and Charmy trusted their leader's decision, and Vector snorted in agreement. "We don't have anything else to think about right now. We've got your back, Sonic."
"Right!" Espio and Charmy nodded simultaneously.
Sonic leaned in and whispered his plan to Vector, who soon smirked in response. He then grabbed hold of Sonic while Sonic held T-Pup in his hands. Snively and Ebony remained oblivious to what the group was about to do. Vector shot Sonic's ball form straight at Blackjack in one swift motion. With the plan in action, Sonic spun rapidly into Blackjack's grasp.
The bulldog clenched Sonic tightly, still being pushed back by Sonic's force. Anger filled Blackjack's face as he gritted his teeth and let out a deep roar. He then launched the blue ball behind him, and Sonic reverted to his regular form, holding T-Pup as he ascended toward the building where Snively's hover unit remained looming.
"Okay, Sonic, you've asked for it!" Ebony finally realized where the blue hero was trying to go, signaling to his gunmen. "Open fire, boys! Let's make this hedgehog's demise slow, painful, and memorable!"
As Sonic glanced down, he realized he had to be careful while landing on the seesaw platform. He gracefully landed on it, and the weight of his impact launched the spiked ball into the air. It hovered seconds before descending to its original position, propelling Sonic into the air. He soared closer and landed on the hood of the hover unit, startling Snively in his chair.
"Hey-O, pizza delivery for Dr. Smugly! Will you pay with a Chaos Emerald or a greeting from my foot as it kicks your butt?" Sonic taunted with enthusiasm, allowing T-Pup to slip out of his grasp.
"It's Dr. Snively, you pest!" Snively corrected indignantly.
"Slimely?" the hedgehog jestingly asked.
"Snively!"
"Scaly?"
"SNIVELY!"
"George?"
"ARGH!" Snively shouted in extreme distress, pulling at his hair. "I'll make you wish you had never mocked me again, you street rat!"
"Ouch, ooh! Such an insult!" Sonic pretended to be offended, giving T-Pup time to sneak inside the hover unit. "I've heard better insults from whiny, little complainers like you."
Before Snively could unleash a taser shock on Sonic, gunshots rang out as Ebony's goons fired their weapons. Sonic skillfully dodged a few shots, some hitting the windshield of the hover unit. Snively let out a girly shriek while T-Pup made it through the doorway and positioned himself behind Snively's seat.
"HOLD YOUR FIRE, YOU FOOLS! DON'T SHOOT WHERE I AM!" Snively screeched, waving his arms frantically and unaware of T-Pup's presence. "I SAID, DON'T SHOOT-! OOF!"
Snively's words became abruptly cut off as T-Pup pushed the short human's face against the control panel. The canine robot let out a triumphant yip as he snatched the orange gemstone in his mouth and smashed through the broken windshield into Sonic's waiting arms.
Struggling to look back up, Snively yelled, "NO! You're not getting your dirty mitts on that Emerald!"
"Attaboy!" Sonic grinned at T-Pup's accomplishment, glancing at Snively's dismayed face while playfully flicking his long nose. "Sorry, but I've got to bounce! Let me know when you come up with something more creative to call me, Snotly."
"Grr, get back here, you troublesome-!" Snively exclaimed angrily, swiping at Sonic, who jumped off the hover unit, T-Pup safely in his arms, and gave a two-finger salute. "Egg-Robos! Get them!"
Upon receiving a direct order, a few Egg-Robos took to the air, pursuing Sonic as he landed near four seesaws, this time positioned on the ground. However, to Sonic's surprise, the seesaws were not loaded with spike balls like before. Instead, they were perfectly balanced on both sides, which struck Sonic as peculiar. Just as one of the Egg-Robos was about to fire a shot, a powerful robotic foot came crashing down on its head.
"YEE-HAW!"
A voice with a southern belle accent echoed through the air, instantly lighting Sonic's eyes as he recognized the familiar tone. He couldn't believe his luck and couldn't help but almost smile as he watched Bunnie make her grand entrance.
"Wha-?!" Snively exclaimed in surprise. "HOW DARE YOU!"
"Gettin' into trouble like usual, Sugar-Hog?" Bunnie greeted Sonic with a smile.
"I owe you one, Bunnie," Sonic almost smiled in relief, still holding T-Pup.
"It's time to teach these clod-hoppers a lesson!" Bunnie declared, sprinting forward to engage the approaching Badniks.
With a swift and fluid motion, the southern belle extended her robotized arm like a lasso, effortlessly pulling one of the Egg-Robos toward her. With a well-aimed kick, she sent it crashing to the ground. Immediately after, she swiftly lassoed another Egg-Robo, swinging it around and slamming it onto the pavement multiple times. Finally, she hurled the last Egg-Robo into the air and leaped up to grab it by its appendages.
"Look out below!" Bunnie shouted as she and the captured Egg-Robo plummeted toward the ground, executing an audacious upside-down pile-driver move.
The impact upon hitting the streets was unimaginable, causing Ebony's goons to shield their eyes and brace themselves against the chaos. The stunned silence that followed was broken by Bunnie gracefully rising from the rubble, seemingly unaffected by the fall. She had managed herself from the impact with remarkable ease, leaving everyone in awe of her resilience.
"The first round might not get you!" Ebony shouted at Sonic, but he swiftly redirected his gun toward Bunnie. "But maybe the second will get you next, lass-!"
Suddenly, an arrow pierced through, taking out his gun. Ebony cried out in frustration as Sally, Antoine, and Rotor revealed themselves, ready to join the fight.
"How about none, buster?" Sally confidently spoke, reloading her bow with another arrow.
"You're dead!" Foxxie exclaimed, supporting Ebony's arm and motioning for Blackjack with a glare. "Take them out!"
Blackjack lunged forward, kicking up dust as he propelled himself toward Sally and Antoine, aiming for a barrage of punches. However, positioned in front of them, Rotor managed to grab both of Blackjack's hands, holding him at bay.
"Not this time, pal!" Rotor grunted, straining to keep his grip.
Despite Rotor's efforts, Blackjack exerted his strength, overpowering the walrus and forcing him onto the ground. He was ready to unleash a beating on Rotor under Foxxie's orders. However, unbeknownst to Blackjack, Espio, in his invisible form, slithered around the bulldog's legs and swiftly tied them together with a rope.
Charmy swiftly utilized his slingshot, pelting pebbles at Blackjack's face, causing him to growl in pain. This distraction allowed Vector to deliver a powerful right hook, striking Blackjack with force. The bulldog lost his balance, stumbling and crashing to the ground, utterly defeated.
Vector shifted his attention to Sally, who seemed grateful for his assistance. "Thought you could use an extra hand, princess."
Sally looked at him curiously. "Who are you?"
"The name's Vector, the brains behind the Chaotix Detective Agency," the green crocodile introduced himself. "We knew you were friends with Sonic, so we thought we'd lend a hand against Ebony's goons."
Charmy chimed in with enthusiasm. "That's right!"
"Thank you for helping," Sally said, smiling, as she motioned for Antoine to help Rotor back up. "And please, call me Sally."
"No problemo. The Chaotix are always here to help those in need," Vector replied, smirking and gesturing toward the unconscious Blackjack. "Besides, thanks to your walrus friend, we managed to take down this big guy."
"Oh! Hehe, thank you," Rotor blushed, regaining his composure.
"Grrr, dagnabbit! I don't know how you got here so quickly, princess," Ebony growled, gripping his gun tightly. "But I'm willin' to bet you won't walk away from this!"
"Aren't you being a bit extreme?" Sally frowned, preparing her bow with an arrow.
"Extreme?!" Ebony raised his gun, ready to shoot at Sally. "I'll show you extreme, sweet-cheeks-!"
Just before Ebony could shoot, Espio, invisible at the moment, knocked the gun out of his hand. "Allow me to demonstrate instead!"
"Are you out of your element, horn head?" Ebony took a step back, surprised by Espio's intervention.
While Ebony was recovering from the shock, Bunnie swiftly delivered a blow to his face. "Oh yeah? Well, at least none of us would associate with lowlifes like you!"
Foxxie managed to grab her leader and quickly retreated from the scene. "Let's make a hasty retreat, boys!"
Observing the goons scattering, Vector glanced back at Sally. "Sorry to cut our meeting short, but my team and I still have a job to do. Sonic has our contact information, so look us up if you ever need a helping hand, princess."
"Thank you again," Sally expressed her gratitude.
"Let's roll, Chaotix! We can't let them get away!" Vector charged ahead.
"Coming, Vector," Charmy buzzed after the green crocodile.
"I appreciate your help, miss, but I must be going. Arigato," Espio bowed respectfully to Bunnie before leaving.
"See you next time, Sugar," Bunnie's smirk faded as she looked up at the worried T-Pup flying into her arms. Concern filled her emerald eyes as she listened to the robot dog's yips. "Sugar-Hog's in trouble? On a rooftop?" she repeated, her voice tinged with worry.
She gently cradled the T-Pup and tried to calm him down. "Easy there, lil' pup. I'll make sure he's okay," Bunnie said, determination flickering in her voice. She knew she had to act quickly to help her friend.
Meanwhile, Snively pressed a button, causing the bottom of the hover unit to expand, twist, and transform into a sleeker and more aerodynamic form. Though it still maintained its overall appearance.
"It's time to die!" Snively shouted as he soared above Sonic, who had already sent T-Pup away to find Sally and the others. But then the short man noticed Bunnie, one of the team members, leaping her way over from an ascending stairwell.
Bunnie landed beside a surprised Sonic and narrowed her eyes at Snively. "Not so fast!"
"MOVE!" Sonic urgently pushed Bunnie out of harm's way, allowing them to witness the spiked ball from the hover unit crashing onto the ground with a loud clang.
"You missed us, you idiot!" Sonic shouted up at Snively.
"Hahaha! Look again, you foolish pests!" Snively taunted, pointing down near the scene.
The spiked ball rapidly changed colors from gray to red and yellow, its flashes growing faster. Sonic's eyes widened as he attempted to retreat, but it was too late. The spiked bomb detonated, propelling Sonic backward with tremendous force. The explosion surpassed the earlier Bomb-Bots in strength, leaving a profound impact.
"SONIC!" Bunnie cried out in concern.
Sonic collided with the ground several times before coming to a halt. His body bore marks from the blast and impact, a rare occurrence as he hadn't sustained such damage like this. Snively seized the opportunity and launched another spiked bomb.
And this time, he aimed for the area next to Sonic rather than directly at him. Being unable to rise in time, Sonic got caught in a closer explosion that inflicted a heavier toll on his body. As a result, he was considerably more scuffed and banged up, with two small trails of blood trickling from his mouth.
The blast had taken its toll on the blue hero, prompting Bunnie to glare back at Snively. "That's enough outta' you, Big Nose!" she shouted angrily.
As Bunnie charged forward, the dwarf threw another spiked ball at her. She effortlessly caught it in her robotic hand and swiftly hurled it back, grazing the hovering unit's surface. Slowly getting up, Sonic observed Bunnie's explosive move. He noticed the spiked ball she had landed on one end of a seesaw before it detonated. A brilliant idea sparked in his mind. Hurriedly, Sonic located another seesaw and positioned himself on one side, raising the opposite end.
"Hey!" he shouted, capturing Snively's attention. Looking down, Snively saw Sonic defiantly gesturing with his middle finger. "You're not as tough as you think! Can't even hit me now, can you?"
Enraged, Snively retaliated by launching another spiked bomb from the hover unit's base. Sonic anticipated this and swiftly jumped to the other end of the seesaw, causing that side to descend. As expected, the spiked bomb propelled Sonic into the air, taking him beside Snively's hover unit.
"Take this!" Sonic delivered a powerful kick, leaving a noticeable dent in the hover unit.
A few sparks fizzled, but the hover unit showed no signs of breaking. Bunnie was in awe of Sonic's lightning-fast decision-making, but what unfolded next caught her completely off guard. Sonic descended to the platform, only to be taken aback as another spiked bomb tumbled out shortly after his landing. One of the spikes grazed Sonic's arm, causing blood to trickle out.
"Argh!" Sonic cried out, shutting his eyes, biting his lip, and clutching his wounded arm.
"Sugar-Hog!" Bunnie urgently tried to reach her injured comrade, but Snively sent her back with an exploding spiked ball in front of her.
Undeterred by the rough landing, Bunnie quickly rose to her feet and charged at the hover unit again. Despite encountering a barrage of spiked balls, the cyborg rabbit skillfully punched and kicked each one aside. Meanwhile, Sonic glared at the smirking Snively through one eye, his mind racing to devise a plan to bring the battle to an end. It didn't take long for a smile to form on his face as he came up with an idea.
Racing over to another seesaw, Sonic taunted, "Why don't you give it another try and see what happens!"
Snively grinned in response. "Don't mind if I do!" He released another spiked bomb, and Sonic swiftly adjusted his position.
The spiked bomb descended from the hover unit and landed on the opposite side of the seesaw where Sonic stood. Then, the blue hedgehog got propelled into the starry sky above.
"Ha! That was easier than I expected," Snively remarked, starting to fly closer to a glaring Bunnie with his hover unit. "All that leaves is another pest to deal with-!"
However, as Sonic descended, he crashed into the seesaw, causing the spiked bomb to catapult back up, flashing red and yellow. To Sonic's delight, the bomb detonated directly beneath the cannon on the hover unit, obliterating the artillery and inflicting severe damage to the hovercraft.
"All right, Sugar-Hog!" Bunnie exclaimed, throwing her fist in the air, cheering for Sonic.
"You didn't see that coming, did you? That's the sound of justice being served," Sonic declared confidently, swiftly getting back on his feet. "Looks like I've outsmarted you this time!"
Snively angrily pounded the control console. "Argh! Not again!" He pointed a bony finger at Sonic. "I HATE you!"
"The feeling's mutual, ugly," Sonic retorted without hesitation.
In a classic display of cartoon logic, the streets began to shake, and birds scattered as a tremendous, enraged yell reverberated through the air. "WHAT IN TYRANNY IS GOING ON HERE?!"
Snively recoiled at the sight of his uncle's Egg-O-Matic. Dr. Robotnik, seething with anger, breathed heavily and without humor. His face turned a deep shade of red, and his trembling became visibly apparent.
"Speaking of ugly, here comes the fashion disaster," Sonic remarked with a smirk.
"O-Oh, D-Dr. Robotnik!" Snively backed away very nervously at his uncle's outcry just seconds ago. "I-I was able to track down and find a Chaos Emerald around here, but then-!"
"Snively!" Dr. Robotnik was boiling in rage, zooming his hovercraft in front of his shivering nephew. "I thought I told you to stay inside the laboratory and guard Miles! And now, you're trying to kill the hedgehog when he's supposed to be MINE to destroy alone!"
"But there's no problem with that, sir! I made sure that brat has become heavily guarded by our Swat-Bots." Snively then angrily points at the battered hedgehog. "And this little maniac has the sixth Chaos Emerald that I've found here. We need to stop him-!"
But Dr. Robotnik waved it off. "Forget about it, Snively."
"EXCUSE ME?!" Snively shifted back to his uncle in confusion. "Dr. Robotnik, we can't just pass on this-!"
"Your hovercraft isn't capable of sustaining any more infliction like this, or else you'd risk crashing. Plus, I have four Chaos Emeralds, and Sonic only has two! The numerical advantage is mine!" Dr. Robotnik leaned in to flick Snively's long nose with cruelty. "But you should've known Miles is just as smart as you are if not more to steal our Chaos Emerald back at the factory, Snively!"
"That's absurd! And it seems to me, for our security, that I have...!" Snively went to reach into his lab coat's pocket, only to gulp and go pale when he found nothing inside. "I-I-I have...uh!"
"You have what?" Dr. Robotnik showed an angry sneer, eye twitching.
"I have...no, uh...!"
"What?! Speak up, man!"
"I HAVE NO KEY! THERE, I SAID IT! I LOST THE KEY, ALRIGHT?" Snively blurts out, causing the mad scientist to reel back a bit.
But then Dr. Robotnik's glasses became frighteningly shiny. "You blithering idiot! We're about to dig up something worth happiness in my rule. Nothing was supposed to go wrong there! And you lost your key to SOME TWO-TAILED MUTANT!"
Trembling like a frightened animal in the rain, Snively nodded fearfully as Dr. Robotnik redirected his attention to Sonic, currently supported by Bunnie below. Despite his battered and bleeding state, Sonic glared at the rotund doctor.
"Bah! There's nowhere left for you to run, is there?" Dr. Robotnik sneered, a touch of arrogance lacing his voice.
"Well, except for your base," Sonic replied defiantly. "Nothing's stopping me from finally taking you down for good, Butt-Nik."
A malicious grin spread across Dr. Robotnik's face as he contemplated Sonic's words, a hidden fury simmering beneath the surface. "I suppose you've never had the pleasure of visiting, eh? Ho ho ho..." His laughter dripped with a mix of mockery and anticipation. "I'll be eagerly awaiting your arrival, rodent."
With their exchange concluded, Dr. Robotnik and Snively swiftly departed, their flying machines carrying them back to the Scrap Brain Factory, leaving Sonic and Bunnie to process the encounter.
"Eh?" Sonic pondered this before perking up. "A home-field advantage, huh? I guess this journey won't be much longer."
Then, Sonic glanced over at the scene of the Chaotix chasing after Ebony's henchmen, with Foxxie carrying their unconscious leader while the bulldog bodyguard struggled to retreat. Sonic smiled in compliance, knowing that a job doesn't get done until it's certainly finished. Sonic will probably see those three detectives another day.
"Hurry it up, Sally-Girl! We're up here!" Bunnie called out to her closest friend.
The princess and her group ascended the alley ladder with T-Pup and gathered around Sonic. Of course, except for Antoine, who was irritated, huffing and crossing his arms.
With frustration and worry, Sally rushed toward Sonic and grabbed him by the shoulders. Her voice shook with intensity as she shouted, "You could have gotten more hurt or worse! Do you have any idea how scared I was?"
"OUCH! OUCH! OUCH!" Sonic winced in pain, tinged with distress.
Sally's face flushed with embarrassment as she realized her mistake. However, her worry for Sonic's well-being overshadowed her self-consciousness. She silently retrieved a few bandages from her quiver and seized Sonic's bloody hand. Sally tightly wrapped a bind around his arm, ensuring it would staunch the bleeding and hold it together.
"Calm down, Sal. It wasn't on purpose." Sonic noticed Sally's annoyed expression while she continued tending to his wounds. "Well, it's much to explain what I did, but why did you guys come here?"
"We came to check on you," Rotor said, smiling before his expression turned solemn. "Sonic, we couldn't just let you go like this."
"Seriously, guys-? OW! Sal, what the heck!?" Sonic muttered, wincing as Sally used sterile wipes on his wounds.
"Would you listen for once, Sonic!" Sally exclaimed, her glaring eyes locked onto Sonic's surprised face. "You never intended to destroy my kingdom or separate me from my family! That's Robotnik's fault."
"She's right, Sugar-Hog," Bunnie chimed in with a regarding manner.
"Yeah, and I loved the part where you and Bunnie totaled Snively's hover unit." Rotor acclaimed. "It's too bad the Chaotix couldn't stick around to say goodbye."
"Well, those dudes had a job to do. I think they'll be okay." Sonic's eyes then seemed troubled at his newfound friends as the next question dawned on him. "So you guys were worried about me?"
"Of course we were," Bunnie reassured Sonic, her voice filled with empathy as she placed a hand on his shoulder. "It's okay, now. We're not mad at you. You didn't have to put such a heavy burden on yourself like that. We're a team, remember? We're here to support each other through the good and the bad."
Sonic could only find solace as he embraced Bunnie's warm hug. He yearned to say that there was no need for apologies, that he wanted to protect them and everyone else because helping others was his ultimate goal. However, all that escaped his lips were more fragmented apologies.
After they released their embrace, Bunnie flashed Sonic a reassuring wink that bore no ill will toward him. Despite his flinching in renewed pain, Sally remained focused on tending to Sonic's injuries. Gently touching the bandages, Sonic frowned at himself. "Sal, I wanted to talk about what I said..."
Sally gazed at Sonic with tenderness. "Sonic, you have proven yourself invaluable to our team. While I wish you wouldn't keep putting yourself in harm's way for others' safety, it's clear that you do it because you genuinely care. Right?"
"Right..." Sonic responded, allowing those words to sink in.
"Exactly," Bunnie chimed in, standing beside him. "What happened in the past wasn't your fault, and even if it was, you still wanted to jump back in and give Robotnik a good beatin', just like the rest of us."
"True that," Rotor affirmed, patting T-Pup by his side. "Besides, things wouldn't be the same without you and the little guy here."
Antoine interjected flatly with his arms crossed, "It has been..."
Sally and Bunnie glared at Antoine, and Rotor snapped, "Antoine, you're not helping!"
"I-I did not say anything," Antoine stammered nervously. "I just hope we have seen the last of those dreadful doctors."
"I wouldn't say so, Antoine." Sally pointed in the direction where Dr. Robotnik and Snively headed, causing everyone except Sonic to gasp in shock.
From a distance, a colossal and grimy manufacturing system on South Island came into view. Concealed within the smog clouds generated by Dr. Robotnik, a blimp stood.
Known as the Scrap Brain Factory, there were buildings in varying shades, with chimneys intermittently belching additional pollution into the reddish sky. The structures featured luminous green walls adorned with technological equipment. The ground was transformed into gray metal, interspersed with warning signs. Surrounding the factories, remnants of polluted ruins made of white and light green stone became scattered. Certain sections appeared strangely polished, albeit embellished with lifeless vegetation and pinkish water.
Sonic scowled, realizing that the manufacturing system was where Dr. Robotnik transformed innocent creatures into Badniks. He held out only two Chaos Emeralds. "And since I have two Emeralds now, Butt-Nik still has four in there with Tails."
Antoine nervously gulped, expressing his concern.
Ignoring Antoine's reaction, Sally tenderly held Sonic's face, causing him to become flustered. "I can't expect you to fight for my kingdom if I'm not fighting for it myself. We're going with you."
Bunnie chimed in with a flirtatious smirk, saying, "Well, well, Sally-Girl, you sure are gettin' close to ol' Sugar-Hog." She followed it with a wink.
Sonic blushed at Bunnie's comment, scratching his head awkwardly. "Very funny, Bunnie," he stammered, embarrassed.
Realizing Sonic's reddened state, Sally quickly withdrew her hand, blushing. "The point is, Robotnik has given us a reason to take action. We're going to help you. And Nicole can assist too," Sally said, gesturing to her handheld computer.
"I am programmed to assist in every operation," Nicole stated.
Sonic felt a surge of energy and purpose. He could sense that the dynamics within the team were shifting, and he was ready to embrace the responsibility of being a full-time member of the Freedom Fighters.
As Sonic extended his hand for a team hand stack, his friends eagerly joined in, one by one. Sally, Bunnie, Rotor, and even T-Pup all placed their hands on top, their expressions filled with determination and trust.
"Then it's settled," Sonic declared passionately. "There's no time to lose! Let's get in there, save Tails, and put Robotnik out of business once and for all!"
Sally's smile widened, her eyes gleaming with determination. "We won't let you face this alone."
Bunnie beamed, her unwavering support evident in her voice. "We've got your back, no matter what."
Rotor's grin grew, and he nodded in agreement. "Together, we'll take down Robotnik and bring peace back to our world."
Though hesitant, Antoine eventually complied, realizing the importance of their united front. "Since you are all going...!"
The team stood united. Sonic's smirk reflected the determination in his eyes as they prepared to face their final challenge, the Scrap Brain Factory.
"LET'S DO IT TO IT!" Sonic exclaimed, his voice filled with confidence and readiness.
In the dim corridors of the Scrap Brain Factory, the young fox cautiously moved between hiding spots, avoiding Swat-Bots and Badniks. The place had death traps at every turn, spikes, swinging balls, descending weights, fire bursts, saw blades, conveyor belts, and bright steel structures. Tails wondered how anyone could navigate this chaos while searching for the hidden Chaos Emerald.
The factory housed a mix of older and newer Badnik models, similar to Robotropolis. Tails skillfully maneuvered through spinning wheels, evaded Swat-Bots, leaped over gaps, and dodged spiked balls and cutters. He had to be cautious of steam eruptions and narrowly escaped a descending saw blade.
Swiftly evading the blade, Tails knew he had a close call. He hurriedly moved forward but noticed another saw blade emerging from the floor, giving chase. In the distance, a Cater-Killer approached. Thinking quickly, Tails spun his tails rapidly, hovering above the Cater-Killer.
The saw blade sliced through the approaching menace, freeing the critter. A Buzz-Bomber took a shot at Tails, hitting his shoulder. Tails retaliated and closed in on the Badnik, eventually destroying it. Moving forward, he approached a mysterious orb-shaped object on a metal stand.
However, it unleashed an electric shock that harmed Tails. Determined, he kicked the orb off the post, leaving only the bracket to discharge electric shocks upward. As Tails continued, he realized the factory grew increasingly strenuous. He encountered a massive conveyor belt and carefully timed his sprint to avoid a descending weight.
Leaving the hallway, Tails found himself outside the factory, facing various structures. A Ball-Hog Badnik threw a yellow ball at him, which rolled to a stop at his feet. While surprised and frustrated by the exploding ball from the Ball-Hog, Tails quickly retaliated, kicking the ball back at the Badnik and destroying it.
As Tails flew past the debris, he harbored a grudge against Robotnik for forcing him to destroy seemingly harmless objects. His attention then shifted to a conveyor belt hanging in mid-air, too thin to walk on. Instead, it circled through eight stable platforms, with the bottom spinning while the top remained steady.
Carefully observing the pattern of the platforms, Tails waited for the opportune moment to leap. He jumped onto the first stable platform on the belt and rode it until the end. Then, he hopped back onto one of the rotating platforms behind him. Thankfully, they eventually stopped spinning, allowing Tails to jump off the conveyor onto a solitary platform and then onto another. He swiftly made his way to the ledge near the final surface.
Ahead, Tails spotted a small tower with a narrow opening. Squeezing through, the fox boy found himself surrounded by darkness. Suddenly, a bright light intermittently illuminated the space as Tails was propelled through wide pipes, twisting and turning.
Exclaiming "WHOA!" during the wild ride, Tails closed his eyes until he finally came to a stop. Stepping out of an identical tower, he realized he had gotten warped to a different section of the indoor factory. Taking note of the columns, Tails considered their potential usefulness.
Utilizing his twin tails, Tails began hovering through the factory, encountering familiar obstacles and traps. He noticed a high platform but no springs nearby. Instead, it was a spinning metal cog with a long bracket attached to the wall. Tails jumped onto the cog, hanging upside down due to the gripping mechanism.
Feeling a bit queasy, Tails contemplated his next move. He came up with an idea to launch himself toward the platform. Spinning his tails faster and faster, he made the cog spin at an increased speed. Looping around the cog, Tails jumped off, propelling himself up and landing gracefully on the metal floor above. He couldn't help but smile, reveling in his victorious maneuver.
Tails unknowingly stepped on a red part of the floor, causing a hidden hatch to open beneath him. Falling into the pit, he found himself faced with another electric orb.
In a desperate attempt to escape, Tails struggled against the electrified enclosure, enduring painful shocks. However, Tails managed to kick the orb away, severing the electric connection and freeing himself. Seizing the opportunity, he repeatedly hurled the sphere at the hatch until it shattered, allowing him to leap out.
Rushing down a nearby hallway, Tails narrowly avoided a massive metallic weight that crashed just inches behind him, propelling him forward and causing him to stumble.
When Tails finally looked up, he was astounded to discover a room that led to a podium. There was the purple Chaos Emerald encased within a glass safe. With the skeleton key he always carried, Tails approached the locked gemstone, skillfully opening the compartment and retrieving the precious Chaos Emerald.
As the purple gem radiated a mysterious glow in Tails' hands, he couldn't shake the worry that Dr. Robotnik might return and catch him in this vulnerable state. The mere thought drained him, intensifying his desire to find Sonic. However, before long, he heard a faint footstep approaching from behind.
Tails quickly turned his head, hoping to see Sonic's familiar silhouette. "I-Is that you, Sonic?"
"Mobian life form detected."
The shadowy figure, who turned out to be a robotic version of Professor Charles Parlouzer, interrupted Tails with his cautious words. Despite his mechanical form, he still retained some resemblance to his original organic self, with a hedgehog-like appearance and a mustache. His body was now mechanical. He had dark yellow plating on his extremities, muzzle, and limbs. A light periwinkle metal frame replaced his fur while his brows and mustache had taken on a pale tan hue. His eyes had red irises and an ever-present black sclera.
Tails gasped in alarm, tightly clutching the Chaos Emerald. "Wait, don't come any closer!"
"Return the Chaos Emerald to Dr. Robotnik," Charles droned, forcefully seizing the gemstone with his clawed hands.
"No, stop!" Tails desperately tried to wrest the Chaos Emerald from the robotic hedgehog's grip, unaware of the ethereal glow surrounding them. "You can't give it to him! I won't let Robotnik win! Not after what he's done to everyone! Please remember! Let it go!"
"R-R-Return the...! Aaargh!" Charles winced, closing his eyes as the energy of the Chaos Emerald surged through his circuits, triggering vivid memories of pain and suffering from the past.
"Kintobor, this is madness! Release everyone immediately!"
"NEVER! I am in control now, you fool! I, Dr. Ivo Robotnik, am taking over Mobius, with or without that imbecilic king's permission!"
"I will not stand down to this mutiny! You are nothing but scum!"
"I relish the thought, Chuck, and now you will join your people in what you've created!"
Charles mustered the strength to push himself up, despite the overwhelming agony coursing through his circuits. His body, now partially functional, struggled to obey his commands. He extended his hand and found support against a nearby wall. Each step sent a jolt of pain down to his feet.
However, a peculiar change began to take place within his mechanical body. The pain gradually diminished, reducing to a mere twinge. Whatever had caused his suffering had subsided, leaving him with a renewed sense of clarity. He noticed the trembling figure of a two-tailed fox standing before him.
"…S-Sonic, is that you, Sonny-?" Charles started, his functions returning as confusion clouded his expression. "Wait, you're not my nephew. Who are you?"
"No, I'm not," Tails shook his head in wonder, his eyes fixed on the glowing Chaos Emerald. "But somehow, being near the Emerald seems to have triggered something in your memory. My name is Miles Prower, but most people call me Tails. I've been trying to escape with the Chaos Emerald and find Sonic."
"I see," Charles said, his attention momentarily captured by Tails' unique twin tails, causing the young fox to feel slightly timid. "Forgive me for my reaction. It's rare to encounter a fox with two tails."
"It's okay, sir," Tails replied, glancing down at his namesakes, a hint of sadness in his expression. "I've had these tails since the day I was born. I've learned to take care of myself."
Curiosity sparked in Charles' eyes as he continued the conversation. "How old are you, kid?"
"I'm eight years old, but I'll be turning nine next week," Tails answered, surprising the robotized hedgehog.
"Ah, well, my name is Professor Charles Parlouzer, but you can call me Uncle Chuck," Charles said, a trace of sadness mixed with determination evident in his voice. "At least I still have some of my true self left, thanks to the power of this gem. Finding Sonic is a priority for me too. He's my nephew. Have you seen where he went, Tails?"
"The last time I saw him, he was heading toward this location on one of Dr. Robotnik's monitors," Tails replied, excitement filling his voice at the opportunity to help Sonic's family member. "I can't believe I'm meeting Sonic's uncle!"
"Heh, I consider myself lucky to have your help right now," Charles said, his gaze turning to his metallic limbs. "Although I'm unsure how long I'll retain my free will. But with the Chaos Emerald's power, I'm confident it will keep me intact until we find Sonic and end Robotnik's plans. He's mining energy crystals that are vital to South Island's ecosystem. If he succeeds, it will be disastrous. We must stop him before he destroys everything!"
As Tails nodded in agreement with Charles' idea, the robotized hedgehog's gaze fell upon the metallic collar adorning the fox cub's neck. Shock and concern filled his features. "What in Mobius has that madman done to you?"
"W-Wait!" Tails stammered, quickly raising his hands in defense and stepping back. "Don't touch it! I've tried that before, and it shocked me so intensely that I nearly passed out."
Despite Tails' warning, Charles maintained a determined expression. "That may be true, Tails, but perhaps... just perhaps, the collar has a different effect when a robot touches it while it's on you, right?"
"Y-Yeah, maybe," Tails mumbled, fear evident in his voice.
"Hmm... I've got an idea!" Charles snapped his fingers, then knelt, his metallic and sharp quills facing Tails. "Listen carefully, kid. Use the keen edge of my robotized quills like a buzzsaw and slice through the outline of the shock collar."
"Are you...?" Tails' breath grew heavy, his hand hovering near his neck, wary of touching it. "Are you sure about this?"
"Yes. Tails, I trust you," Charles reassured him, though he didn't fully believe his words. "GO!"
Taking a deep breath, the young fox gently pressed the shock collar against the robotized hedgehog's quills, relieved that it didn't deliver a painful shock upon contact. Closing their eyes, Tails moved swiftly, using the sharp quills to cut through the torturous neck piece. The collar broke apart and fell to the floor, prompting gasps from both of them.
"It worked!" Tails exclaimed, tears welling in his eyes as he burst into laughter, tightly embracing Charles. "Thank you so much!"
"You're welcome, kiddo," Charles replied, his eyes closing with a warm smile as he returned the hug. "Let's move before Robotnik returns-!"
Suddenly, speakers scattered throughout the area crackled to life, causing them to startle.
"Attention! Sonic has entered the Scrap Brain Factory. I repeat, Sonic has entered the Scrap Brain Factory! Your top priority now is to destroy him!" blared the voice of the mad scientist.
"Oh no! We have to hurry!" Tails exclaimed, glancing at Charles with determination.
"Alrighty, let's go!" Charles released the fox cub from the embrace, allowing them to sprint down a dark corridor with a sense of urgency.
