Chapter 3: A Young Girl's Heart
"Kagome-chan." She turned her gaze woodenly to Toman's leader and held her breath, knowing something terrible was coming.
Mikey please.
"I'm sorry." He continued.
Mikey, no.
Stop.
"Baji—"
Darkness was creeping into vision until Mikey's mouth was the only thing she could see.
"—is dead."
All breath left her and darkness completely filled her vision before she fell to the ground.
"Kagome!" Chifuyu was able to catch her head before it hit the floor. Pushing aside her bangs, he saw the cooling patch. "She's sick. There wasn't a gentler way to do this"
Mikey didn't respond and instead took her from Chifuyu and laid her into bed. There was so much more he wanted to say. He wouldn't get to though, because he had to leave and when he left he would have to be a gang leader again, and he wouldn't be able to tell his friend's sister all of the soft things he wanted to. He cupped her cheek and taking note of her clamminess he left and returned to wipe her face with a cool damp cloth.
"Mikey-kun…" Chifuyu made his presence known as he finally entered the room. His good eye was red and tired. He'd taken off the eyepatch and the injured one was swollen and irritated.
Mikey glanced up at his subordinate and back to the broken-hearted girl lost to the world. He wanted to be the one that she woke up to. He wanted to be the one to wipe her tears away when her world crashed down around her. He ran his fingers through her hair, just as dark as her brother's. Leaning down, he buried his head into her neck and held her as best and gently as he could. He whispered an apology before sitting up and stroking her cheek once more.
Chifuyu stood frozen in the door. He had never seen Mikey so gentle or his gaze so soft. Not even with his beloved little sister.
"Stay with her tonight. I will be here tomorrow." He gave a small grin. "Keep an eye on her. Kago-tan makes bad decisions when she's upset."
Chifuyu nodded and stepped aside to let Mikey through.
When she opened her eyes, it was dark and quiet. She moved to sit up, but stopped when she heard a low moan. Wondering if her brother had finally returned home she grabbed her phone shining her flashlight on him, hoping it would blind him. It would serve him right after ditching her for days!
But it wasn't her brother's face she discovered. It was Chifuyu's.
Oh…
Normally, this would have been a dream come true. Now however, she just wanted to shove him away and stomp on his face until it cracked and then her brother's face would be revealed, and then… and then…
"So scary imouto! I didn't know it was yours!" Eyes wide, 12 year old Baji held her away from him, glad she was so tiny.
"Onii-baka! I'm going to smash your teeth in and gouge your eyes!" a 10 year old Kagome screeched, big brown eyes blazing.
"Where did you even learn to speak like that?! Ow!" Kagome had embedded her sharp teeth into his arm. Releasing her brother's arm, she pounced on him and pulled him into a hold, sitting on his back and pulling his legs trying to break his body in half. "Kagome! Mikey help me!"
"Mikey I'll bite your ear off!" The little girl screeched. Paling, Mikey turned to his friend with a sad smile.
"I'll miss you Baji."
Knowing he wouldn't be getting any help, Baji grunted with effort, but managed to rearrange them so that she was tightly against him pinning her arms to her side. She struggled a moment, but soon settled. There was a brief pause before soft sniffling caught the boys' attention. Loosening his hold he stared wide-eyed at his little sister. She never cried and yet there she was on his lap with big fat tears running down her round cheeks.
"Kagome…" he urged her to speak.
"Daddy's wife doesn't let me have oden when I go over there. Even though it's my favorite food, she throws it away whenever I get it. She says it's unhealthy, but she lets Inuyasha have ramen every day! I wasn't allowed to have it even though I was stuck over there for two weeks!" She whimpered, referring to her forced vacation with her father's family. "She hates me so much! And I finally get to be home with you and Mama! And now… but now you ate the oden we were supposed to eat together!" Kagome turned her body so that her face was buried in his neck.
"Gomen, Kagome-chan," he said patting her head with a soft smile.
He had been pleasantly surprised when she appeared in his doorway some moments ago. Kagome was his half-sister as they had different fathers. While his was out of the picture, Kagome's wanted to be in her life as much as possible. The only reason Kagome stayed primarily with her mother was because Kagome's father Toga's wife couldn't stand the sight of Kagome as she was product of her husband's infidelity. However, Toga every now and again would get a wild hair up his ass and decide to take Kagome to his home sometimes for weeks and then return her when his wife's nagging became unbearable. It didn't matter that Kagome was miserable there, he just wanted to have her. And when she came back, she would have a slightly broken look in her eye that Baji tried his best to heal. This time however, she appeared suddenly even though she was supposed to be with her father for a month. And unfortunately, he was a growing boy who saw a hot meal on the table and decided to claim it for himself when she walked in on him stuffing his face with her favorite food.
Letting out another little sniffle, Kagome raised her head.
"How about we go get another bowl from down the street?" He offered and returned her bright smile.
"That sounds like a great idea, Baji-kun! Let's go!" Mikey said hopping off of the bed. Seeing a pair of blank stares, the boy pouted and told them they owed him a bowl.
An hour later, Kagome was snuggled against her brother's side watching a movie using toothpicks to pick up their favored ingredients from the cheap bowl of oden that they got from the convenience store. Looking up at her brother as he laughed at the characters on screen, she felt warmth settle in her heart, glad to be home.
Sniffing, Kagome looked down at her phone, having finally read the last message her onii-chan had sent her.
Onii-Chan:
I'll be out for the day again, but I'll pick up some oden for dinner.
I know it'll make you feel better.
What ingredients do you want?
Tear drops fell onto the bright screen. Looking at the time she found the night to still be young. Narrowing her eyes, she steeled her heart and texted Inuyasha to come get her in an hour. It took all her effort to maneuver around Chifuyu so she could get showered and ready. A soft beep on her phone let her know that her ride was here. Looking back at Chifuyu leaning over her bed she doubled back and placed a blanket over him. Her phone beeped again. She needed to leave.
