Chapter 4: Taking Responsibility

"Kago-tan makes bad decisions when she's upset."

After searching the apartment twice and calling Kagome's cell three times, Chifuyu was in near panic-mode. It was almost 12 and he hadn't the slightest idea as to where she could have gone to, or even how she managed to slip by him the night before. Then again, with three nosey, borderline overprotective brothers, she needed such a skill if she was to engage in her usual mischief.

Taking a deep breath, Chifuyu admitted defeat. A small smile made its way to his face as he wondered how Baji managed to deal with her. He wondered what he would done. His vision blurred. Just thinking about his captain sent him spiraling. He should be out tearing the city apart to find this girl. It was his job to look after Kagome now. With new resolve, the teen pulled on his uniform boots and opened the door.

Just in time he was able to dodge his leader's fist that was about to knock. Chifuyu cursed mentally. He had forgotten that Mikey was coming by again. What was he supposed to tell him? That he failed to complete his extremely simple order and lost Kagome? Green eyes stared into black and Chifuyu could feel himself starting to sweat.

"Yo!" the blonde said with a smile.

Chifuyu gulped down the large nervous lump forming in his throat.

"Kagome's not here yet?" he asked and stepped inside the apartment.

"What?" Chifuyu watched as Mikey took his shoes off and plopped onto the sofa.

"Kago-tan's oldest brother, Sesshomaru called Emma this morning to ask for my number," Mikey smiled wistfully. "Then he called me and chewed me out real bad. Apparently, Kago-tan went to a party last night, got wasted and then got into a fist-fight with a boy there."

"Shit! Is she okay?"

"She's got a black eye and some cuts and bruises, but she's fine otherwise. The other guy though…" Mikey chuckled and folded his arms behind his head.

Chifuyu smiled and laughed, "Baji is her brother after all."

Silence fell over them a moment.

"It's our responsibility to take care of her now," Mikey spoke evenly as he sat up. "Sesshomaru made that very clear. Kago-tan told him about Baji last night. He told me that even though he couldn't stand Baji, he trusted him to protect their sister. But now that Baji's gone…"

"Is he threatening to take Kagome away?" Chifuyu clenched his fists tightly. "He can't just do that!"

"This isn't the best neighborhood, and since Baji died due to gang violence. Her dad could easily get custody of her using that. He has all that money backing him too. Baji and Kagome's mom wouldn't stand a chance." Mikey sighed and folded his hands. "Sesshomaru said that for now, their father would probably continue with shared custody, but if anything happens to Kago-tan, we may never see her again."

Chifuyu had never thought that he would see his fearless leader look so lost. Baji's death had shaken everyone. He himself was in near shambles. He was barely holding himself together and the only thing keeping him from falling apart was worrying about Kagome. And Chifuyu couldn't even begin to imagine the state that Mikey was in. He looked calm and collected, but his eyes saw the blood from clenching his fists too tightly.

"Mikey-kun, what do we do?"

A quiet "tadaima" sounded from behind them.
