Surprises

Chapter 21

"How bad is it?" Maddie asked the doctor as she looked at her husband through the hospital window.

"He is lucky. Broken ribs but no punctured lung, lacerated liver and his spleen had to be removed, bruised kidney but we are confident that there is no internal bleeding, concussion but nothing significant and no swelling so far, broken clavicle, wrist, left tibia." Dr. Adams explained.

"He's unconscious." Maddie remarked.

"He's woke a few times but the anesthetic really has a grip on him. He will be in pain for a while but he will be okay." Dr. Adams said.

"Good. He has some family that really needs him to be okay. Can I take the baby in? She's only a few weeks old and I'm nursing so I couldn't be separated from her." Maddie asked.

"Of course." Dr. Adams said with a smile. He tickled Gia's belly before leaving Maddie to walk into Mike's hospital room. She sat the carrier down in a chair before turning to Mike's hospital bed. He was bruised up and she could tell he was fighting consciousness, but she squeezed his good hand. His eyes flittered open and he groaned.

"What happened?" Mike asked.

"You were in a car accident. Drunk driver hit you, going nearly seventy miles an hour." Maddie said. She kissed Mike's forehead, where it wasn't bruised.

"The kids…were the kids with me?" Mike asked in a worried tone. He was searching around the room with his eyes while the heart monitor began chiming.

"Hey, hey. They are okay. Its late now. You were in surgery for a while. Katie and Hannah are staying home with Oliver and I have Gia right here." Maddie said. Mike laid his head back on the pillow and groaned.

"So tired." Mike admitted.

"You just sleep." Maddie said.

"I'm sorry. I was horrible to you." Mike said.

"Mike…you were upset but you were not horrible. You have really been nothing but a perfect gentleman to me. We will talk about it when you feel better, okay?" Maddie said. She leaned down and gave Mike a long kiss.

"I…love you." Mike said simply. It shocked Maddie but she smiled at him.

"I love you too. Why don't you go to sleep? I'll be here when you wake up." Maddie suggested. She gave him another kiss and tucked the blanket around his chest. He nodded and closed his eyes, quickly falling asleep. She checked on Gia and settled into the empty chair.

She slept as well as anyone could in a hospital, sitting upright in a chair with a baby that needed nursed every three hours and an injured husband. By morning, Maddie was exhausted and Gia was just done with the hospital. Mike watched her nurse the baby and finally spoke.

"It might be better for the both of you if you go home. I understand." Mike said.

"I hate to leave you here." Maddie remarked.

"You're exhausted and Gia's pissed. Why don't you go home, get some rest and come back with the other kids?" Mike suggested. Gia detached and let out an angry cry.

"Okay." Maddie said. She adjusted her clothing and put the crying baby in her car seat before giving Mike a kiss.

"I love you." Mike said.

"I thought that might have been pain induced. I love you too." Maddie answered.

"No. Something I should have said before I left yesterday…it was yesterday, right?" Mike asked.

"Yes." Maddie answered.

"Get some rest. I'll see you later." Mike said.

"See ya." Maddie said. She gathered her purse and the diaper bag and car seat before slipping out. She spoke with Mike's nurse before leaving, glad to be able get some proper rest for a bit but feeling bad for leaving Mike alone at the hospital.
