Catherine hugged Lyla and then kept her by her side. "Bring Liz for me," Catherine said to Steve.
Steve took Liz out of the crib and placed her on Catherine's lap. Lyla's little eyes sparkled at the sight of Liz near her. Lyla made a motion to reach out and touch Liz but stepped back and looked at Catherine.
"Do you want to pet her?" Catherine asked.
Lyla shook her head saying yes.
Steve took Lyla's hand and brought it up to Liz's little leg. "Slowly because she is very tiny, OK?"
Lyla nodded and stroked Liz's leg very gently. Liz opened her little eyes and Lyla came closer.
"She's your little sister, Liz. Her name is Lyla and I'm sure you already know her voice," Catherine said to her daughter.
"Hi Liz," Lyla said to the baby. Steve smiled as he saw Lyla's interaction with Liz. The minutes passed quickly and it was time for Steve to take Lyla away.
"Honey, we need to go now," Steve said to the little girl.
"I don't want to leave, Daddy."
Catherine stroked Lyla's hair. "Tomorrow Liz and I will go home, Lyla."
"You promised me you wouldn't cry, remember?" Steve said to Lyla.
"Okay," Lyla replied with a sad face.
"Give me a hug." Catherine hugged her lovingly with one arm while her other arm held Liz. "I love you, honey."
"I love you too, Mommy." Lyla kissed Catherine's cheek and then kissed Liz's little hand. "I love you, Liz."
"Liz loves you too," Catherine said to Lyla.
Steve took Lyla away from the hospital and then they went to buy some things to prepare a little welcome home party for Catherine and Liz.
Three years later...
"Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday, dear Liz,
Happy birthday to you!"
"Blow out the candle, child!" Steve said to Liz.
Liz blew out the candle flame, but the flame did not go out. She tried again but couldn't. "Help me, Lyla!" Liz asked and Lyla approached and blew out the candle flame along with her.
"I think it's so cute this companionship between them two." Margaret said to Catherine.
Catherine smiled and agreed. "They are soul sisters."
"That's true," Margaret agreed.
"Thank you for letting my daughter call you Grandma. Thanks to you she will know what it is to have a grandmother, " Catherine said to Margaret.
"You don't have to thank me, Catherine. My husband and I love her and we are very happy when she and Lyla come to visit."
Catherine put her arm around Margaret's shoulder. "She is very fond of you too. Shall we have some cake?"
"Of course," Margaret replied.
A few minutes later...
Steve was looking at Caroline and Edward grim-faced as he ate cake. They were talking in a corner of the party hall and often kissing quickly.
"What's that face, Steve?" Catherine asked as she approached him.
"I hate this guy," Steve said and pointed at Edward.
"Edward? That's not true, Steve. You love him," Catherine said.
"I love him as a person, but I hate him as my daughter's boyfriend," Steve replied to her.
"And can you make that distinction? Well, I think you'd better accept that because they both really like each other. Caroline is much nicer after she started dating Edward."
"Margaret asked about Don," Steve told her.
"She can't come to terms with the fact that Don married Maggie when he was 18."
"But what could I do, Cath? He was of age. And come to think of it, it was the best thing."
"Well, on that I have to agree. At least Maggie says they're happy together," Catherine said.
"What makes me sad is that he probably won't come back to the island to visit us."
Catherine put her hand on his shoulder and stroked him trying to comfort him.
Lyla moved closer and put her arms around Catherine's waist. "Mom, did you see that Liz couldn't blow out the candle?"
"I saw, honey."
"Liz is very weak, she needs to eat more."
Catherine and Steve laughed. "She's not weak, child. She just loves you and likes you to always be around," Steve said to the girl.
"That's true. And she's already calling you to play," Catherine said to Lyla and pointed to Liz who was gesturing for Lyla to come over to her.
"She can't live without me, can she?" Lyla said to her parents.
Catherine smiled and agreed. "No."
Steve passed his arm around Catherine's shoulder and they kissed lightly. "I love you, you know?"
"I know," Catherine told him and then kissed him once more. "And I love you too."
"I'm going to have a little chat with the team before they leave."
"OK. Call me before they leave so I can thank them for coming," Catherine told him and Steve pulled away as she kept her eyes on the children.
