Chapter 2

It was Spock's first time on an away mission. He was serving on the crew of the S'Hara vessel. He was among a dozen V'Tosh who were sent to Earth to harvest females to serve as comfort staff for the Governor's office.

Terra was discovered by Vulcan in 2063. Zephram Cochran had launched the Phoenix, the first warp-capable spaceship from Earth. The captain of the Vulcan ship that witnessed this event was Solkar, Spock's great-grandfather. Solkar made first contact with the humans. He would go on to lead the acquisition of Terra for the Vulcan Confederacy.

For millennia, Earth had existed without interference from Vulcans. Earth was considered another useless planet in the Sol system. From the moment that Cochran hit warp one, the lives of humans would never be the same again.

Spock sat in a San Francisco pub with members of the S'Hara crew. Stonn, the descendant of the Vulcan warlord, Sudoc sat at the head of the table. He eyed a blond waitress who was serving drinks at the next table.

Stonn licked his lips and said, "Spock, have you ever had a human female?"

"No, I have no interest," Spock replied.

Stonn grinned at Spock. He knew of Spock's issues with T'Pring. She was a highly desirable female, but Spock had failed to produce an heir in his second Pon Farr. Failure in the first Pon Farr was common. Most V'Tosh were still maturing at the age of fourteen, but by twenty one, most V'Tosh were fully capable of producing an heir. Stonn had two sons. One from his first Pon Farr and the other from his second.

Stonn disliked Spock. He was an outsider because of his human DNA. Governor Sarek was like most V'Tosh. He took a human concubine, but instead of destroying the pregnancy, he caved to the desires of the female and allowed Spock to live. Spock's brother Sybok was from Sarek's legal wife. He held more status in society.

Spock's clan was also notorious as the descendants of Surak, the Vulcan philosopher who led the Logic movement. He and thousands of other Vulcans had relocated to T'Khut, the planet adjacent to T'Vulk'ain. Solkar renounced logic when he returned to T'Vulk'ain. It was Solkar who redeemed the family with the conquest of Earth, a planet rich in gemstones, gold and other metals that enriched his clan. He put many humans to work in the mines of the Vulcan Confederacy. His son Skon, and grandson Sarek upheld the family tradition of serving as governors overseeing the labor camps and in the trafficking of human females throughout the Alpha Quadrant.

"Ha ha ha, could it be because of your sense of logic or some other family issues?" Stonn replied.

Spock drank his tea and set the cup on the table. He was tired of Stonn's insults and jabs.

Spock was well aware that Stonn's first wife had died in childbirth and he was seeking a new mate. Finding a mate this late in life was difficult. No grown male wanted to bond with a child, and most Vulcan females were bonded except the lowest-ranking ones. T'Pring would be a prize for anyone. Her family was high-clan, and she was most desirable.

The blond waitress returned to the table. She held the tray in one hand and placed a glass in front of Stonn.

Stonn grabbed her, and the tray fell. The glasses crashed to the floor. The blonde did not resist, but the look on her face conveyed her true feelings. She was repulsed by the Vulcan. Volaris was the only member of the Sahara crew with whom Spock had any sort of relationship.

" Spock, there are many females here for the taking, have one." He said.

"I have no interest," Spock replied.

" Yes, you have the lovely T'Pring back on T'Vulk'ain. One cannot blame you for resisting the temptations of this lot of Ko- guhsh," Skon said.

"Yes, " Spock replied. He said nothing else, for he truly did not care much for T'Pring. She was simply the bond mate that his parents had selected for him to use when he reached his Pon Farr. Spock felt differently about having a bond mate than other Vulcans. He wanted someone for whom he cared. No one, not even his father, understood that about him.

"How can you resist the human form?" Stonn said. He took the waitress's hand in his and kissed her fingers.

They are so…delicate" Skon snapped her wrist. She cried out and fell to the floor, begging for mercy.

"Please, my lord, please!" she cried.

Stoon stood up. There was no hiding his desire for the female as he walked across the room dragging her by her broken limb.

As you wish… I will please you!" He said with a chuckle.

Spock watched the spectacle and stood up. He could not mask his disgust.

"I have to see my father," Spock said.

"May I trouble you for a ride back to the transport station?" Volaris asked.

"I have a stop to make at the marche'," Spock said. He wanted to be left alone with his thoughts.

"I need a few items as well. I am quite fond of Terran bread," Volaris added.

Spock acquiesced and drove his hovercar to the marche'. He purchased fresh produce. Volaris added bread and other sweets to the cart. Spock sighed. Sometimes Spock questioned if Volaris was truly a friend or if Volaris hung out with him because he had unlimited currency. Spock was putting his produce in his vehicle when a cart rolled toward him. A small human rushed over to grab the cart, but it was too late. It hit his vehicle making a sizeable dent.

"Ko- guhsh!" shouted Volaris. He raised his hand to strike her.

"Kroikah," Spock shouted. He grabbed Volaris's hand.

Spock looked at the figure crouched on the ground.

"It is a child," Spock said. "I am sure he did not mean it."

The figure pulled his hood over his face and looked away.

"Maybe Stonn is right about you," muttered Volaris.

Spock pulled himself up to full height. He was at least three centimeters taller than Volaris.

"Would you care to repeat that statement?" Spock asked.

"No…Osu," Volaris said.

Spock put the rest of his bags in the vehicle and the figure scurried away. As Spock backed out of the lot, he watched to see which direction the child went in.

Spock did not say a word for the rest of the trip. He left Volaris at the transport station. Spock had decided that night that he had no intention of returning to the ship to serve. Instead, he went to the governor's headquarters and found his way to his father's suite. Spock looked around for his mother. She was older and he rarely saw her. That evening, Sarek was entertaining himself with the two nubile young human females when Spock entered the parlor.

"Father, I wish to speak with you," Spock said.

Sarek sat up. The females stood up and ran out of the room. Spock watched them and then turned to his father.

"I desire to teach," Spock said.

"I will arrange for a post for you at the Science Academy," Sarek said. He stood up and pulled on his robe.

"No, father, I want to resign from my position. I want to teach humans." Spock said.

Sarek laughed, "Spock, you are a compassionate V'Tosh, but your sympathy for these humans has gone far enough." Sarek said.

"I am part human," Spock replied.

"Which is even more reason you should return to T'Vulk'ain to teach. You must limit your association with these humans." Sarek said.

"It won't matter. Everyone knows I am part human. I want to live on Earth." Spock admitted.

"Now you are being ridiculous," Sarek said. "Humans will fear you."

"There is a small college in this area. It focuses on teaching groups from many species." Spock said.

"I am aware of Starfleet Academy. It is run by people with wild notions about equality of the species." Sarek said with a chuckle.

"If you allow me to resign my commission, I will ask nothing of you. I will make my way here on Earth." Spock said.

"And what of T'Pring?" Sarek asked.

"She has made a petition to sever our bond," Spock said.

Sarek walked over to his son and placed his hand on Spock's shoulder.

"I grieve with thee,' Sarek said.

"It is no matter. I felt no desire for her." Spock admitted.

"No desire?" Sarek said. T'Pring was a comely female.

"No," Spock whispered.

"Well, you will have to find a new mate. Perhaps you will find one that you find desirable." Sarek said resignedly.

"You will approve my severance?" Spock said.

"Yes, and you may live here until you have settled," Sarek said.

Spock walked over and hugged his father. Then he went to the library to tender his resignation.
