Chapter 6
Three years later…
Admiral April had come through with the commission, Spock was a Lieutenant commander when he received his commission. His only request was to be given the opportunity to develop a xenocultural department. Spock also taught in the department, but he spent most of his teaching load in physics.
Spock's twenty-sixth birthday had come and gone. Sarek had reached out to Spock to meet. Spock had been left to his own devices for the three years he had served at Starfleet Academy. He kept a low profile and avoided controversy. That is why Spock knew there could only be one thing that Sarek would discuss. Spock promised to meet Sarek that evening, but he needed to go home to get a Vulcan robe and shoes for the occasion.
Kamu had been living with Spock for three years. He was no longer a kid. He had grown into a strongly built young man. Spock had served as his guardian, allowing Kamu to pursue culinary training while Spock was at work. Spock also sponsored Kamu's education. Kamu, in turn sent money home to pay for the education of his siblings. Kamu still prepared meals and cleaned, but he also worked the night shift a ran restaurant at the Spock paid him handsomely for doing so. That is why Spock was concerned when he got home and Kamu was sitting there in tears.
"Kamu, are you well?" Spock asked.
Kamu shook his head.
"No," he could barely look at Spock.
"They took her," Kamu said.
Spock sat down. He knew it was not good.
"Clarify," Spock said.
"My sister, they took her from college. I have been paying her tuition. She was going on a holiday to celebrate her graduation. I did not know my father had mortgaged our land to pay," he pounded on the table.
Spock reached for Kamu, but he pulled away. He shook his head.
"I should have done more," Kamu cried. "My dear sweet sister is gone. They will use her, you know? They say the girls who are used by Vulcans are never the same."
"I know," Spock said. He stood up and shoved is hands in his pocket.
"No, you are here sitting pretty at Starfleet Academy. Mr. Liberal, you have no idea what it is like for the rest of the people in the quadrant." Kamu yelled.
"I do know." Spock replied. "They took my mother; her back was broken."
"You are part human?" Kamu said.
"That is why I chose to live on Earth. The V'Tosh Ka-tur are barbarians. They have taken over the quadrant. Everyone lives in fear…even me." Spock said.
Spock went to his room and grabbed his robe and shoes. He turned and spoke to Kamu.
"I will be back tomorrow. Do not attempt to contact your family until I return." Spock said.
Kamu nodded.
Spock drove over to the embassy. He slipped on his robe and shoes while he was in the hovercar. He entered the embassy and walked passed the information desk. The staff stood and bowed. Spock waved and kept going. When he got off the lift, there were three females sitting in the parlor with Sarek. Spock presumed that one was for him.
"Leave us," Spock said.
The women jumped to their feet and scurried out of the room. Sarek stood up and grinned.
"Anger, Spock? What happened to the tenets of Surak?" Sarek said.
"You mock me, but it is you who is without honor." Spock said.
You sound like a Klingon," Sarek sneered.
"I should not have come," Spock turned to go.
Sarek put his drink down.
"Spock, you must find a mate. You are near the age of Pon Farr." Sarek said.
"I have found a mate," Spock had never lied in his life. Although it was quite common among the V'Tosh Ka-tur.
"You have found a mate or a plaything?" Sarek grinned.
"She is the sister of my friend. However, she was taken away from her family."
"A human?" Sarek sneered.
"I desire her," Spock said. He was in too deep to stop now.
Sarek exhaled, "You plan never to return to T'Vulk'ain?" Sarek asked.
"I will live out my life on Earth or…" he stopped.
"Or what?" Sarek asked.
"There are other planets besides T'Vulk'ain," Spock said, he did not want to discuss his commission. He was asking too much.
"What would you have me do?" Sarek asked. He poured a drink and sat down.
"I will pay the mortgage, deliver the female to me." Spock said.
"You will keep a human concubine in your Starfleet cottage?" Sarek laughed.
"I will buy a home for us. I will …" Spock was grasping at straws," …produce an heir." Spock said.
"You are part human, Spock. The child will be as well," Sarek said. He got up and went to the console and flipped the switch. Then he entered commands on the screen.
"Location?"
"Kenya."
Sarek turned and looked at Spock.
"Hmm, that sounds intriguing."
"Name?"
"Uhura," Spock said.
He didn't know which of Kamu's sisters was taken. He hoped that the name would be enough.
"I see her here. Nyota Uhura," Sarek said.
"Star," Spock whispered.
"Clarify," Sarek said.
"Her name means star," Spock said.
The computer scanned and responded, "Concubine for the house of Sudoc."
Spock was outraged! The Sudoc Clan was known for brutality. Most human concubines never made it past their first encounter with the members of the clan.
"No, she is mine!" Spock growled.
Sarek took a step back.
"Well, if she makes your blood boil sa-fu, you shall have her. I will ensure that she is untouched. It will be more pleasing for you when you take her for the first time."
Spock dropped to his knees. "S'haile, I thank thee," Spock exclaimed.
"Consider her a wedding gift. I will pay the mortgage to ensure her safety," Sarek added.
Sarek looked down at his son. He had never looked so Vulcan.
"Your future wife will be transported to the embassy tomorrow. Do you wish to stay over? I have some delightful company." Sarek said.
"No, I have to return to my home." Spock said. He wanted to share the good news with Kamu. Spock got off the lift and was stunned to see Kamu in the lobby.
"I want to speak with Sarek," he yelled.
"Go home human," the guard said.
Kamu pulled out a phaser. He pointed at the guard. "Now!"
"Kamu, no!" Spock yelled. He ran across the lobby just as the guard yanked the phaser, pulling Kamu's arm off with it.
"Kamu," Spock picked up his friend, put the arm on top of his body, and carried him outside. The wound was bleeding intensely.
"Kamu, I told you to wait for me. She will be here tomorrow," Spock said.
Kamu looked up at Spock and smiled. Then his eyes closed.
