Amity's intro
Water. Earth. Fire. Air.
Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed her most, she vanished. A hundred years passed, and me, Willow
and Gus discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Luz. And although her airbending skills are great, she has a lot to learn before she's ready to save anyone.
But I believe Luz can save the world.
The episode opens in a forest while King suddenly appears, jumping from a tree to another tree. A mysterious figure is seen following him, and King lands on a roadside kiosk, while Team Avatar is arriving at it.
(Walking toward a poster on the kiosk, present in the middle of a crossroad.) "This should give us a good idea of what's around here." Eda said
(Flips a small pouch to find it empty aside from a few crumbs.) "See if you can find a menu, I'm starving!" Willow said (Wipes her mouth.)
"I bet we'll find something to eat here," (Pointing at the poster.) "the Fire Day's Festival." (King jumps down. Luz begins reading-out the poster.) "Fire Nation cultural exhibits, jugglers, benders, magicians …" (Turns to Amity.) "This would be a great place for me to study some real firebenders." Luz said
(Looking at another poster on the other side of the kiosk, seriously.) "You might wanna rethink that. Look at this." Gus said
(Comes over to look at the poster.) "Hey, a poster of me!" Luz said
"A wanted poster! This is bad." Eda said (Luz removes the poster from the wall and starts reading it.)
(Stares at the wanted poster.) "I think we better keep moving." Amity said
(Looking at Amity.) "I have to learn firebending at some point and this could be my only chance to watch a master's up close." Luz said
(Swayed by Luz, while her head is bowed.) "I guess we could go check it out." Amity said (Luz begins rejoicing.)
(Moves in front of Amity, in an opposing tone.) "What? You wanna walk into a Fire Nation town where they're all fired-up with their ... you know, fire?" Willow asked (Luz becomes serious again.)
(Starts walking toward Appa and is followed by Luz.) "We'll wear disguises and if it looks like trouble, we'll leave." Amity said
"She's right about the disguise part, I remember when-" Gus didn't finish (Holds his foot in pain from getting it stomped by Willow)
(Not convinced, sarcastically.) "Yeah! Because we always leave before we get into trouble." Willow said
(To Appa and King.) "You guys stay out of sight here while we go to the festival." (To Amity, Gus, Willow and Eda.) "Ready disguises!" Luz said
Amity, Gus, Willow and Eda put on their black cloaks while Luz pulls her orange shawl over her head with a smile on her face making herself look ridiculous.
(Sarcastically at Luz's goofy disguise.) "It's like you're a whole different person …" Willow said (Amity giggles.)
(note by Darth Nominatis: I'm not entirely fond of of sarcasm, it isn't my thing, no offense to those who use it)
"Let's go." Luz said
The gang looks around seeing everyone in masks.
"I think we need some new disguises." Gus said
"Where are we gonna get masks like that?" Willow asked
"Get your genuine Fire Festival masks here!" The Mask Dealer shouted
(Shocked) "That was surprisingly easy." Willow said
The gang chooses five masks. Amity chooses a lady with makeup, Willow chooses a blue smiling mask with petals around the rim, Gus chooses a lion mask that shows his mouth, Eda chooses a warrior mask and Luz chooses a red mask with a frown on it. Amity removes Willow's mask, revealing her to be frowning, and Luz's mask, revealing her to be the one smiling. She places Willow's original mask over Luz's face and Luz's over Willow's face.
"Hey, there's some food." Luz said
"Finally!" (To the shopkeeper.) "What do you have?" Willow asked
"Flaming fire flakes! Best in town." the Shopkeeper said
"I'll take em!" Willow said
"Be careful with those, there's a reason they're called flaming fire flakes" Amity said
Willow gobbles down the fire flakes, but has a spasm from the spiciness.
"Aaahhh! Hot! Hot!" Willow yelled in pain
(Sarcastically.) "Flaming fire flakes, hot? What do you know?" Eda said
"Hey, look at this." Luz said
"Don't worry, loyal citizens! No one can surprise the Fire Lord!" the Puppet Fire Lord said
(As an Earth Kingdom general puppet pops up behind the Fire Lord's puppet, with a rock ready to attack.) "Oh no! Look out!" the Fire Nation Kids shouted (The puppet breathed fire, burning the other puppet.)
"Luz, hold on! Where are we going?" Gus asked
"I don't know, but there's a big crowd so it must be good." Luz said
(Sarcastically.) "Knowing the Fire Nation, it's probably an execution." Willow said making Amity nervous
"I gotta learn that trick!" Luz said
"Thank you! For my next trick I need a volunteer from the audience!" the performer said
(Waving her hand up in the air all around childishly.) "Oh! Oh! Me! Me!" Luz said excitedly
(In a stern tone while pulling her arm down.) "What do you think you're doing?" Eda asked
"I want to get a closer look." Luz said
"It's better that we don't attract any attention to ourselves." Amity said
"How about you, little lady?" the performer asked
(While backing away.) "Uh." Amity said nervously
"Awww, she's shy. Leeet's give her some encouragement, folks!" the performer said as the crowd lifted Amity onto the stage
(In a jealous tone while folding her arms.) "Awww! That could've been me." Luz said
(elbows Luz in the stomach making her hold it in pain) "will you cool it? It's your fault she was sent up there" Willow said
"This next trick is called 'Taming the Dragon.'" (While sitting her down in a chair and tying her to it.) "You will be my captured princess! Don't worry, young maiden! I will tame this fiery beast! It's too strong, I can't hold it!" the performer yelled
"We gotta help her!" Luz said
"No, we don't want to make a scene!" Gus said
"The rope, it's breaking!" (Luz saves Amity with her airbending, dispersing the flames is a ray of colors while she loses her mask in the process.) "Hey, you tryin' to upstage me, kid?" the performer asked
Luz starts doing a goofy dance as everyone boos at her for ruining the trick while Gus, Willow and Eda were untying Amity.
"Hey! That kid's the Avatar!" a citizen said (Luz stops dancing and runs.)
"I think it's time to go." Willow said
"Follow me! I can get you outta here!" the mysterious man said (The group follows him.)
"There they are!" a Fire Nation Guard said
The mysterious man throws a series of explosives at the Fire Nation soldiers that are chasing them.
"Over there!" another Fire Nation Guard said
"I'm calling Appa." Luz said (blows her whistle.)
"I hope he can really hear that bison whistle!" Eda asid
(Making a sharp turn down one of the several alleys.) "This way!" (Comes running back.) "Okay! Not this way!" the mysterious man said
They make another turn, but the way they came is blocked by guards. The man throws another smoke bomb and runs past them into another alley. They group comes across another dead end where there is an enormous supply of fireworks. Cut to an overhead shot that reveals Appa has arrived in the nick of time.
"Appa! Down here!" Luz shouted
Appa lands between the team and the guards, with his backside facing the guards. Appa airbends a gale force wind which results in the guards getting blown out of sight. As the guards run back into
the alley, Appa has already taken off. Cut to the mysterious man, he bites the top off a bomb to light it. He throws it at the fireworks supply and it blows up creating a beautiful display of fireworks. Cut to the man removing his hood as they cruise away.
"Nice touch setting off the fireworks." Luz said
(Impressed.) "You really know your explosives …" Gus said
"I'm familiar." the mysterious man said
"You're a Fire Nation Soldier!" Willow said
"Was. My name's Chet." Chet said
The group lands and makes camp.
"I serve a man. More than a man really, he's a myth, but he's real, a living legend, Jeong Jeong the Deserter. He was a Fire Nation general, or wait, was he an admiral?" Chet asked himself
(Not amused.) "He was very highly ranked, we get it." Willow said
(whispers to Willow) "Do you mind, these are great details I'm getting" Eda said writing in her book as Willow look turned from unamused to annoyed
"Yeah! Way up there! But he couldn't take the madness any more. He's the first person ever to leave the army - and live. I'm the second, but you don't get to be a legend for that. That's okay though. Jeong Jeong's a firebending genius. Some say he's mad - but he's not! He's enlightened." Chet said
"You mean there's a firebender out here who's not with the Fire Lord?" (Gets up in excitement.) "We've gotta go see him! He can train me!" Luz said excitedly
(Snaps at Luz.) "We're not gonna go find some crazy firebender!" Willow shouted
(Annoyed, Stands up to gesture.) "He's not crazy! He's a genius! And he's the perfect person to train the Avatar! That's why I followed you into the festival." Chet said
"Look, thanks for the help, but we're leaving for the North Pole in the morning." Willow said
"Willow, this could be my only chance to meet a firebending master who would actually be willing to teach me." Luz said
"It can't hurt just to talk to him." Gus said
(Very annoyed.) "That's what you said about going to the festival! Why doesn't anyone ever listen to me?" Willow asked herself
As Willow turns to pout, she almost runs right into a spear. In a flash, they are surrounded by men wearing straw hats, light armor, wearing tribal make up, and wielding spears.
"Don't move!" one of the men said
The tribal folks escort them to their settlement.
(Angry.) "Jeong Jeong told you not to look for Avatar!" one of the men said
"Hold on, you know these guys?" Eda asked
"Oh yeah! Lin Yee's an old buddy! Right, Lin Yee?" Chet asked
(Not amused with Chet.) "Shut up! Keep moving." Lin Yee said
Down the hill, there is a little cottage with leaves and logs.
"Go on. He sees you only." Lin Yee said
"Oh that's okay, we can chat later." Chet said
"Is that where Jeong Jeong is? I need to talk to him right away." Luz said
Luz tried to move forward, but was stopped by a spear shaft.
"No! You wait there." (Pushes Chet forward.) "Go now!" Lin Yee said
"Don't worry! Everything'll be fine. He's a great man, great man!" Chet said
Chet walks toward Jeong Jeong's cottage. Back in the Fire Days Festival in the now deserted central square of the town where some guards are being interrogated by Admiral Bhao who is accompanied by a few guards himself.
"So, the Avatar was here and you let her slip away?" Bhao asked
(Anxiously.) "Yes, sir, but other than that the festival went off without a hitch!" (A huge piece of burning planks of wood falls in the background with a massive crash making the guards twitch.) "No fights. Theft was way down." the Guard Captain said
(Irritated.) "I don't care about your local crime rates! Which way did they go?" Bhao asked
"They headed into the forest, up the river I suspect." the Guard Captain said
"Ready the river boats. We're going after the Avatar." Bhao said
Back in the settlement, Chet exits Jeong Jeong's cottage. He arrives back where Luz and the others are fast asleep. Everyone wakes up instantly as Chet approaches.
"What happened? Can I see Jeong Jeong now?" Luz asked
(Looking downcast.) "He won't see you. He's very angry that I brought you here. He wants you to leave immediately." Chet said
"Finally! Let's hit the road." Willow said (She stretches back out again.)
"Couldn't agree more!" Amity said (packing up in a hurry confusing Gus and Willow)
(places a hand on Amity's shoulder stopping her) "Why won't he see me?" Luz asked
"He says you're not ready. Says you haven't mastered waterbending and earthbending yet." Chet said
(Shocked.) "Wait, how does he know that?" Luz asked
"He saw the way you walked into camp. He could tell." Chet said
"I'm going in, anyway!" Luz said
Luz walks to Jeong Jeong's cottage. She takes a deep breath, parts the curtain, and walks into the darkness. Cut to a dark figure seated cross legged amidst a semicircle of candles, his back to Luz.
"Get out." Jeong Jeong said
"Master, I need to learn firebending." Luz said
"Only a fool seeks his own destruction." Jeong Jeong said
(To Jeong Jeong.) "I'm the Avatar, it's my destiny to—" Luz didn't finish (Gets interrupted.)
"Destiny? What would a boy know of destiny? If a fish lives its whole life in this river, does he know the river's destiny? No! Only that it runs on and on out of his control! He may follow where it flows, but he cannot see the end. He cannot imagine the ocean." Jeong Jeong said
"Okay, but it's the Avatar's duty to master all of the bending disciplines." Luz said
"To master the bending disciplines, you must first master discipline itself. But you have no interest in this, so I have no interest in you! Now, get out." Jeong Jeong said
"Please, I have to learn. This could be my only chance." Luz said
"Are you deaf? How can I teach you if you refuse to listen? Before learning firebending you must learn water and earth. Water is cool and soothing, earth is steady and stable, but fire, fire is alive! It breathes, it grows. Without the bender, a rock will not throw itself! But fire will spread and destroy everything in its path if one does not have the will to control it! That is its destiny! You are not ready! You are too weak!" Jeong Jeong yelled
At this final gesture the candles around Jeong Jeong violently flame up to illuminate the entire hut before quickly going out. A vision in front of Jeong Jeong begins, as one candle is seen lit in front of the firebender. A tree is in the background behind the Deserter. In front of him, stands Avatar Moku.
"You think I am weak?" Moku asked
"Avatar Moku! No, No! I did not mean that." Jeong Jeong said with fear
"I have mastered the elements a thousand times in a thousand lifetimes. Now, I must do it once again. You will teach the Avatar" (He raises his hand and ignites the tree behind Jeong Jeong.) "firebending." Moku said
"Yes, yes, I will teach you." Jeong Jeong said
"Really? That's great!" Luz said excitedly (Raises her hands happily, Jeong Jeong groans in dismay fearing this may not end well.)
In the morning outside of Jeong Jeong's cottage. Willow is sitting on a boulder by the river, fishing. The screen pans up the river where Gus is practicing waterbending with Eda watching before switching to Luz, Amity and Jeong Jeong in front of the cottage. Luz stands, bandy legged, on a flat stone in the river. Jeong Jeong stands a foot or two away on the bank in front of his cottage while Amity was kneeling close to the water dipping her fingers in it.
"Widen your stance. Wider! Bend your knees. Now, concentrate." (Luz expresses her concentration.) "Good, good!" Jeong Jeong said
"Wait! What do I do now?" Luz asked
(Turns around.) "Silence! Talking is not concentrating! Look at your friends, are they talking?" (Points at Willow.) "Even that oaf knows to concentrate on what she's doing!" Jeong Jeong said
(Annoyed.) "Hey!" Willow exclaimed
"But what am I concentrating on?" Luz asked
"Feel the heat of the sun. It is the greatest source of fire. Yet, it is in complete balance with nature!" Jeong Jeong said
"So when do I get to make some fire?" Luz asked
"Concentrate!" Jeong Jeong shouted
Luz breathes and is embarrassed as her friends laugh at her from behind. She turns to look at them, but they stop instantly, as she tries to be innocent. Cut to a long shot of the figures in the distance climbing the slope of a mountain. Cut to a close-up shot of Luz and Jeong Jeong walking up the path to the mountain's summit.
"Are we coming up here so I don't burn anything with my fire blasts?" Luz asked
"No fire yet." Jeong Jeong said
"What?" Luz asked
"Power in firebending comes from the breath. That is why you must master proper breath control." Jeong Jeong said
"You brought me up here to breathe?" Luz asked
"Assume your stance." Jeong Jeong said
Luz assumes the proper stance.
(Faces the opposite direction of Luz.) "Wider." Jeong Jeong said
"You're not even look—" Luz didn't finish (Interrupted by Jeong Jeong.)
"Wider! Now, inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth - without talking. Good. Keep going." Jeong Jeong said
Jeong Jeong walks down the path and out of the frame as Luz continues to breathe, a look of fierce concentration on his face. Cut to a view of Luz's lower body as she parts the curtain into Jeong Jeong's cottage.
"What are you doing here? I did not tell you to stop!" Jeong Jeong said
"I've been breathing for hours!" Luz said
"You want to stop breathing?" Jeong Jeong asked
"I want you to stop wasting my time! I already know how to squat and breathe and feel the sun!" (Wiggles fingers to the ceiling to gesture this.) "I wanna know how to shoot fire out of my fingertips!" Luz said
(Sighs gruffly.) "I had a pupil once who had no interest in learning discipline. He was only concerned with the power of fire - how he could use it to destroy his opponents and wipe out the obstacles in his path, but fire is a horrible burden to bear. Its nature is to consume and without control it destroys
everything around it." (While he was speaking, the camera cuts to Bhao on his boat, several men attack him, but he fends them off easily, leaving a fire in his wake. Cuts back to Jeong Jeong.) "Learn restraint, or risk destroying yourself and everything you love." Jeong Jeong said
After several hours Jeong Jeong finds Luz in front of the hut meditating.
"I thought about what you said, I promise I'll be more patient." Luz said
"We're going to work with fire now." Jeong Jeong said
"Oh yeah!" (Luz gets excited and airbends herself into the air. She quickly gets serious again.) "I mean, let us begin." Luz said
Jeong Jeong grabs a falling leaf and burns the center.
"Concentrate on the fire. I want you to keep the flame from reaching the edges of the leaf for as long as you can." Jeong Jeong said
"Master! There is trouble." a Tribal Man said in panic
"What's going on?" Luz asked
"Concentrate on your leaf!" Jeong Jeong said
(Annoyed.) "This is the worst firebending instruction ever! All he does is leave me for hours to concentrate or breathe!" Luz said
"I'm sure there's a good reason." Amity said
"But I'm ready to do so much more." Luz said
Luz remembers to concentrate on her leaf and gets into a stance and breaths. Moments later, the leaf burns up creating a small flame.
(Excited.) "I did it! I made fire!" Luz said excitedly
"Luz, that's great, but you should take it slow." Eda said as she and Gus walked over
Luz starts playing with it by tossing it back and forth from in front to behind herself. She makes a blast go in the opposite direction.
"Now that's some firebending!" Luz said
"Luz, you'll hurt yourself!" Gus said in panic
"I wonder how that juggler did it." Luz said
Luz tosses it into the air and spreads her arms out. For a second, she has a smile on her face, but it vanishes as she accidentally burns the tip of Amity's ponytail and her hands. Amity shrieks in pain.
"Amity! I'm so sorry!" Luz said in panic
Willow comes running to Amity's side.
(Concerned.) "Amity, what's wrong?" (Angrily.) "What did you do?!" Willow asked with anger
"It was an accident! I was, uh... Amity, I'm so–" Luz had trouble talking
Willow furiously tackles Luz.
(Enraged.) "I told you we shouldn't mess around with this! Look what you did! You burned my friend!" (Amity runs away.) "You burned my friend!" (As Jeong Jeong walks in.) "This is all your fault!" Willow shouted
"I know! Now pack your things. You must leave immediately." Jeong Jeong said
"I'll see what I can do to help her" Gus said (Runs off to aid Amity.)
"I'm sorry, I didn't …" (Willow and Eda run off.) "I'm sorry!" Luz shouted (Jeong Jeong looks at Luz, displeased.)
The scene cuts to Amity who is sulking by a creek due to the pain of her burns as Gus walks over. He bends the water and wraps it around Amity's hands, they glow briefly, and a few seconds later her hands are healed.
"You have healing abilities. The great benders of the Water Tribe sometimes have this ability. I've always wished I were blessed like you - free from this burning curse." Jeong Jeong said
"But you're a great master. You have powers that I will never know." Gus said
"Water brings healing and life. But fire brings only destruction and pain. It forces those of us burdened with its care to walk a razor's edge between humanity and savagery. Eventually, we are torn apart." Jeong Jeong said
Suddenly the water in front of them is blasted with flames. Jeong Jeong gets up and gets into a defensive bending stance and breaks the flames that wash over him, Amity and Gus. The screen changes to a frontal shot of Bhao's riverboats coming toward them before switching back to Amity, Gus and Jeong Jeong.
"Go get your friends and flee! Do not come back here or you will all be destroyed. Hurry!" Jeong Jeong said
Jeong Jeong faces the boats that land harmlessly around him. The screen shows Bhao looking ahead through a telescope from the main deck of his ship. He lowers it and smiles. The screen goes back to Jeong Jeong who produces a large wall of fire in front of the ships. An overhead shot of the ships is shown, the boats turn to land on the beach. The screen goes back to the front of the beach. Bhao comes into view.
"Don't worry, men. My old teacher gave up fighting a long time ago." (The screen pans to Jeong Jeong. Suddenly, Bhao parts through the wall.) "Haven't you, Master Jeong Jeong?" Bhao asked
(The screen goes for a closeup of Jeong Jeong's face, and a wide shot as he drops the wall of fire. Cut to Amity and Gus running up to where Willow and Eda are preparing Appa to leave.)
"Amity! Are you all right?" Eda asked
"I'm fine, we've gotta get out of here. Where's Luz?" Amity asked (Willow gestures to the cottage.)
Amity enters the cottage to find Luz sulking.
"Jeong Jeong tried to tell me that I wasn't ready. I wouldn't listen. I'm never going to firebend again." Luz said
"You'll have to eventually." Amity said
"No, never again." Luz said
"It's okay, Luz. I'm healed." Amity said
(Surprised.) "What? How?" Luz asked
"I'll explain later. But right now, we have to get out here. Bhao and his soldiers are attacking!" Amity said
(Gets on her feet.) "Where?" Luz asked
"By the river. They captured Jeong Jeong." Amity said
"I have to help him!" Luz said
(The screen switches to an overhead shot of the beach. Bhao and his men stand against Jeong Jeong, before cutting to a closer shot.)
"Look at you. You were once so great. I can't believe my former master has become nothing more than a simple savage." Bhao said
"It is you who have embraced savagery, Bhao." Jeong Jeong said
"It's Admiral Bhao, now." Bhao said
"That title will not help you against the Avatar. Do not try to fight her! You are no match!" Jeong Jeong said
(Amused.) "I think I can handle a child." Bhao said
"I have never seen such raw power …" Jeong Jeong didn't finish
"Jeong Jeong!" Luz shouted
"We'll see. Men! Take the deserter!" Bhao commanded
Cut to overhead shot of Jeong Jeong surrounded by five firebenders. Luz tops short in horror as they close in. Jeong Jeong smirks and wraps himself in a ball of flames. When the flames completely dissipate, Jeong Jeong is nowhere to be seen.
(Angry.) "It's a trick! He's run off into the woods. Find him!" (Faces Luz.) "Let's find out what my old master has taught you." Bhao said
(Shocked.) "You were Jeong Jeong's student?!" Luz asked in surprise
"Until I got bored." Bhao said
Bhao throws a fireball at Luz.
"I see he taught you how to duck and run like a coward. But I doubt he showed you what a firebender is truly capable of!" Bhao said (Throws another intense fireball.)
"Whoa! Wild shot!" Luz shouted
(Roars with rage.) "I'll show you wild!" Bhao yelled
Luz looks over to the side where Bhao just burned.
"No self-control …" Luz pondered (Gets an idea.)
"Stand and fight, Avatar!" Bhao yelled
(Mockingly.) "Oh, were we fighting? I thought you were just getting warmed up!" Luz said
(Burns in anger at the remark.) "I was …" Bhao said (Shoots another fireball.)
Bhao fires many more fireballs which all miss.
"Is that all you got? Man, they'll make anyone an admiral these days!" (Nearly gets blasted. Luz cups her hands over her mouth to sound louder.) "Ahoy!" (Shakes her butt at Bhao.) "I'm Admiral Bhao!" (Bhao gets even angrier and Luz nearly gets blasted again.) "I don't know why, but I thought you'd be better than Lilith." (Luz looks disappointed when she says this. Her eyes go wide and she lies down on the deck fast enough to avoid being burnt. Mocking Bhao's firebending.) "Sloppy. Very sloppy." Luz said
"Nowhere to run now, you little smart mouth!" Bhao said
(Having dodged a series of blasts from Bhao on several ships.) "You've lost this battle." Luz said
(Enraged disbelief.) "Are you crazy? You haven't thrown a single blow!" Bhao said
"No, but you have." (She gestures around, all the boats are on fire and sinking.) "Jeong Jeong said you had no restraint." (Jumps in the water.) "Have a nice walk home!" Luz said swimming to shore
"Gus, come on! Let's go!" Willow shout
Cut a shot from behind Luz, who is now looking at the river bank beach. Luz hops on Appa and they fly away.
"Wait! Where's Jeong Jeong?" Luz asked
"He disappeared. They all did." Eda said
(Walks into the now abandoned village, not amused.) "Hey, where did everybody go?" (Sarcastically.) "Very funny guys" Chet said
"Luz, you're burned! Let me help you." Gus said (Gus heals the burn on Luz's arm.)
"Wow, that's good water." Luz said
"When did you learn that?" Willow asked
"I guess I always knew." Gus said
(Sarcastically.) "Oh ... Well then thanks for all the first aid over the years. Like when I fell into the grease berry bramble." (Angrily.) "Or that time I had two fish hooks in my thumb!" Willow exclaimed
(Shocked.) "Two?" Eda asked
(Amused.) "She tried to get the first fishhook out with another fishhook." Amity said
(Still being sarcastic.) "Oh, and the time that mink snake bit me! Thanks for healing that up. That was great. Really helpful." Willow said
