The three waited at the other side of the station for about a minute when a pink van pulled up. On the side was a picture of a smiling pie, with words surrounding it, reading, "Gideon Grey's Real Good Baked Stuff."
Leilani took a moment to recognize the name. "Wait…Travis, is that Gideon Grey? As in, that fox you used to hang out with all the time?"
"Yup." Travis nodded. "He runs a business now, sellin' baked stuff. We just caught up recently, and he agreed to give me and y'all a ride."
"Oh, wow! I wonder if he remembers me! We never talked much, and he never picked on me, except when he said it was stupid that I wanted to help make commercials when I grew up."
"Lei, is that the mean fox you were talkin' about that was friends with Travis when they were kids?" Duke asked.
Leilani tensed up and nervously sucked air through her teeth as she looked up at Travis.
"Nah, it's cool." Travis waved a paw at her. "I know he was a jerk, so does he. I wasn't exactly no angel myself."
"Hey, Travis!" A chubby red fox in a plaid shirt, his hair parted in the middle, stepped out of the van. "Hey, weasels! I'm Gideon, and I'll be givin' y'all your ride to work—" The fox's eyes met Leilani's. "Wait, are you Leilani? Leilani Musterson?"
"Yeah! I remember you, too! Nice to meet you again!" Leilani held her paw out.
"Thanks, you too!" Gideon shook her paw. "I probably was mean to you at some point in my youth, and if I was, I apologize."
"Oh, well, thanks! Honestly, you weren't as mean to me as you could've been, and we didn't really know each other that well."
"So, what do you do, now?"
"I'm a market—"
"—She works in agriculture!" Duke put his arm around Leilani. "So do I! I'm Duke, her husband."
"Oh, wow! Well, nice to meet ya, Duke. Very regal name." Gideon nodded. "I think everyone who grew up in Bunnyburrow has agriculture in a special place in their hearts. Anyway, shall we get goin'?"
"I call front seat." Travis raised a paw.
"Hey, Raymond!" Travis called out as he and the weasels approached the farm.
The deer put down his watering can and ran up to the three. "Hey, Travis." He knelt down to Duke and Leilani's levels. "You ready to get started?"
"Totally!" Leilani gave Raymond a wide grin and nodded, her thumbs up. "Yeah! Can't wait! You know me! Can't wait to help with these special plants!"
"Well, I don't know you that much, but I can believe it. C'mon!" Raymond stood up and walked back to the rows of the now-taller plants.
Leilani and Duke glanced at each other and followed Raymond.
"What're you so nervous 'bout Leilani?" Travis asked.
Leilani stopped short. She looked back at him. "I just…I get nervous whenever I start a new job. It's fine! That's absolutely all that is! Have a good day!"
"Uh, okay." Travis shrugged. "You too."
"Lei, I don't wanna be a jerk, but be careful you don't blow our cover here!" Duke whispered. "You're startin' to become pretty obvious!"
"I know! I know! I'm sorry!" Leilani slammed her jaw shut when she realized how loudly she said this.
Raymond turned around. "Everything okay back there? I should probably let you know that PJ cares a surprising amount about the workplace not becoming toxic."
"What?" Leilani exclaimed, her voice higher than usual. She chuckled and waved a dismissive paw at him. "No, I'm fine! I just, you know! First day jitters! Always happens during my first day at a new job!"
"Huh, well, you're not the first. Anyway, Leilani, Duke, you'll both be planting four rows of seeds, respectively. This will involve you digging ten shallow holes per row, planting the seeds in the holes, then putting soil over them. You will then water them. Maybe I didn't have to tell you any of this, I mean, I'm sure you learned some plant basics as kids."
"Eh, yeah." Duke shrugged and nodded.
"A lot of the animals I grew up with farmed carrots or cabbages." Leilani felt relief from how simple this turned out to be.
"We need to try to come up with a way to find out about Daring Do," Duke whispered as he and Leilani dug holes.
Leilani looked over at the other animals, and determined that they were far enough away for her to feel comfortable whispering about this. "Maybe one of us should talk to PJ? I mean, I don't think she'd freak out if she was asked. I mean, clearly other animals here know. I don't know if Travis knows, but other animals know."
"Maybe I should talk to her. I mean, I know what it's like to work on secret, illegal stuff. Then again, she might open up to you more, since you're a woman."
"Well, I guess so. I also am a marketing agent, so I know a thing or two about persuasion."
Duke smirked. "Yeah. You also learned from the best here how to blend into the criminal underworld."
Leilani chuckled. "Also true."
"Yo."
Leilani and Duke gasped as they looked up and saw PJ standing over them.
"How long have you been here?" Duke asked, a hint of irritation in his tone.
"Since just now. Just wanted to wish you both luck on your first day. I know how hard mine was, so, yeah."
Leilani glanced at Duke, who gave her a knowing look. "Say, PJ? I'd really like to move up in this business someday, and I'd really just love to hear how you got started on your mission and everything."
"Oh, already? Well, I'm honored. Dig a couple more rows and I'll show you everything." PJ gave Leilani a wave and walked back to the tent.
Leilani looked over at Duke with wide eyes as Duke grinned and nodded.
After Leilani finished digging two more rows, she made her way through the tent.
PJ sat at one of the computers, staring intensely and typing at a speed that impressed Leilani, she herself being quite a fast typist.
"Hi, PJ!" Leilani waved.
PJ jumped in her seat. "Oh! Hi, uh, Laila?"
"Leilani."
"Oh, right. Sorry. You know, before I started going by 'PJ,' some animals called me 'Polly' instead of 'Paula.' Anyway, let me tell you what we're all about here." PJ stood up and gestured for Leilani to follow her.
