To all the people wanting to see more of A Cat's Weekend, I'm sorry. I had a draft ready, but it did not turn out so well. I'll keep trying to churn one out, but in the meantime I had this idea for a story. One that would have the same OC. And feature my favorite female character from DC.
I do not own DC Comics or anything from the company.
Enjoy!
In the heat of battle, one was often left to make choices that didn't always benefit victory. Choices that, while understandable, would not ensure a defeat of the enemy.
Zatanna made one such choice in the battle against the Legion of Doom.
She couldn't help herself. She was a hero, so it was in her nature to help anyone who needed it. That included the guy in the Martian Manhunter t-shirt that was about to be crushed by debris. The shadow of death hadn't registered to him yet, so he wasn't moving.
Acting quickly, Zatanna ran over to him.
"Nepo A Latrop! "
A portal opened beside the boy. And Zatanna grabbed him to push him inside it. It closed just as the debris shattered against the ground.
Julio felt dirt on his back when he landed. He also felt something soft on top of him.
Whatever was happening, he supposed it was his fault for not running when he saw the supervillains about to attack. He knew it was dangerous, but he was curious if he would be able to see any superheroes come to fight them.
Like most kids, Julio loved heroes. But he was a big fan of underrated heroes. Superman and Batman were cool, and so was Flash, but Martian Manhunter was his favorite. He was an alien who could shapeshift and fly through walls, which Julio thought was awesome.
He also liked heroes like Green Arrow and Black Canary. He liked how they worked together a lot.
Oh, and there was also the magical heroine….
Julio's thought process was completely derailed when he finally lifted his head and saw what was on top of him. More specifically, who was on top of him.
He recognized the top hat first. Then the leggings. Then the gloves and bowtie. Then the silky black hair, cool blue eyes, and full red lips. And finally the ample curves, wide hips, full bust, and sizable rear he had stared at many times in different posters and online pictures.
She was on top of him.
"Are you alright?"
Her voice was smooth and friendly. And the fact that it was coming out of her mouth meant that Julio was too distracted to answer for a moment.
"Yeah… Yeah. I'm fine."
"That's good," Zatanna said as he lifted herself up. She extended a hand to help Julio up. The boy happily took it. And then he decided to ask a big question.
"Where are we?"
This certainly didn't look like a city street. Julio wasn't an expert on geography, but he was pretty sure Houston was not supposed to have purple skies and yellow stars out at three in the afternoon. And he was standing on green rocks that seemed to defy gravity by floating in a void.
"I'm not sure. This isn't a dimension I'm familiar with."
Julio turned to the taller woman. "We're in another dimension?"
"It's the best explanation I have. I wasn't very specific where I wanted the portal to take us."
"Thanks for that, by the way," Julio said. "Might have died if you didn't help me."
"Don't sweat it," Zatanna said as she began to call her magic forth. "Let's get back to the city. And I'll see if I can ask J'onn if he can give you an autograph."
Julio grinned widely. "I'd love that."
Focusing her energies, Zatanna called forth the same spell from before.
"Nepo A Latrop!"
Nothing happened.
Zatanna formed as the space in front of her remained the same, unchanged and unaltered.
"Nepo A Latrop!"
The same thing happened. Nothing. Zatanna frowned. She knew her magic was still available. She could feel it coursing through her. But nothing was happening.
"Is something wrong?"
"I'm not sure," Zatanna said as she took off her hat. " Nrut ti edisni tuo. "
The hat turned inside out. Just like she wanted it to. So her magic was working. She just couldn't make a portal to take them away.
"Zatanna? When did that get here?"
Turning around, Zatanna saw the thing Julio was talking about.
A house had randomly and suddenly appeared just a few clicks away from them. It was a normal-looking house, with gray walls and a black roof.
"Do you think it's safe to check out?"
Zatanna wasn't sure. In her experience, things that appeared out of nowhere tended to not be very good. But there didn't seem to be a way for them to escape the dimension. And there didn't seem to be anything else to do.
"Alright. Just stay behind me. And keep close."
Julio intended to do both. He did his best not to come off as perverted, but the problem was that Zatanna's ass looked very nice in her outfit. He tried not to stare, but he was having trouble keeping his eyes anywhere else. He hoped she wouldn't notice.
The two of them approached the house, and Zatanna knocked on the door. But rather than open, the wood began to glow.
Both of them stepped back, but the only thing that happened was that writing appeared on the door.
Unus intrat, unus exit.
"One enters, one exits. That's what that means, right?"
Zatanna looked at the boy with surprise.
"Yes. How did you know?"
"Not sure. It's kinda similar to Spanish though. Maybe that helped?"
Zatanna didn't think that was the full reason. But this didn't feel like the right time to dig too deep.
"What's your name?"
"Julio. I'm Julio Macia," he said happily. He then nervously reached out his hand. "It's nice to meet you, Zatanna."
The heroine smiled and shook his hand. It was nice to meet a fan.
"Same here Julio. Now, let's take a look at this house."
Despite the apprehension that the two felt about the whole situation, they fell into a routine fairly easily.
The house, as it turned out, was not haunted or possessed as Zatanna expected. But it was magical in nature. It seemed to be enchanted to fit the needs of whoever was inside it.
It was how Julio found a room filled with books to read, and Zatanna found a basement large enough for her to practice stage tricks. The kitchen always restocked itself with whatever the inhabitants wanted to eat, so they were never hungry. And the rooms were incredibly comfortable, and they always cleaned themselves whenever they left.
Time seemed to not exist in the dimension, but Julio and Zatanna got to know each other while they were there. Julio learned about Zatanna's childhood with her father, and how she managed to keep her secret identity by being a stage magician. Which was clever.
In turn, Zatanna learned that Julio lived alone with his father, an accountant who spent a lot of time on business trips. His favorite color was red, and he knew early on what he wanted to do in life.
"You want to be an architect?"
"Yeah. Well, I wanted to be an artist, but my dad says I won't get much money out of that. But being an architect would mean I can still design things. And I like to draw."
So much so that he spent most of his class time doodling instead of participating. It was why he didn't have many friends. A subject he didn't like to touch.
"What kind of things do you like to draw Julio?"
"Well, nothing exact. I mean, I kind of just draw whatever comes to mind when I have a chance. It's kind of random."
"How random are we talking here?" Zatanna asked as she took a sip of the pineapple cocktail she took out of the fridge.
"I mean, it is a bit of everything. I draw buildings, I draw monsters, and I draw superheroes sometimes. I don't draw people all that often though."
"You sound talented."
Julio blushed slightly. He wasn't used to compliments.
"I wouldn't say that. I mean, you can do magic. So I don't think…"
"Julio, I can barely draw a stick figure. You have a talent that I don't," Zatanna said, hoping to give the kid a bit more confidence. "In fact, why don't we see? Can you think of anything to draw now?"
Seeing the way her lashes moved with her eyes and the way she pushed her dark hair behind her ears gave Julio some inspiration.
"Yeah."
"Ok. How about this? I try to draw something, and then you do. We'll see who can do it better?"
Julio was interested in the idea. But there were questions in his mind.
"You sure it wouldn't be a waste of time?"
"No, I think the waste of time would be trying the same ineffective spell for the four-hundredth time. Let's give it a go."
Julio couldn't think of a reason not to.
"Alright then."
Julio pulled some paper and pencils from a kitchen drawer that magically materialized them. Once he had them in his hands, he handed some to Zatanna to see what she could come up with.
Julio instantly became engrossed in his work. Zatanna, who had started this partially as a joke to see what Julio would do and to distract herself, was stunned at how focused and determined Julio became when he started drawing. It was like nothing existed anymore. His only concern was the pencil moving in his hands.
At one point, Julio stopped. Zatanna thought that he was done, but all he did was go to the drawer again and pull out some colored pencils. He then went right back to his drawing.
"Done."
Zatanna was about to ask what he drew, but he spoke first.
"What did you draw?"
Laughing to herself, Zatanna turned her paper around and showed Julio a stick-figure puppy. The only sign of it being a dog was the tail and the big round nose.
"Told you. Stick figure. How about you?"
Seeing Zatanna's picture, and looking back at his, Julio suddenly became very self-conscious.
"Um, maybe it's not important. You… you don't need to see it, do you?"
Not willing to take no for an answer, Zatanna cheated.
" Taolf ot em ."
The paper flew out of Julio's hands and into Zatanna's. Her eyes instantly widened when she saw it.
It was her. It was a drawing of her face. A very detailed and gorgeous one. Her eyes were icy blue in the image, and the red on her lips was immaculate.
"You made this so quick."
Julio was beginning to sweat a bit. He hadn't truly planned ahead for Zatanna to see it. He wasn't sure how to react without coming across as a weird fanboy or a schoolboy with a crush.
But he had to say something.
"I… I've been looking at your face a lot since we got here."
Crap. That sounded weird. Julio's eyes widened as he desperately tried to recover.
"It's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. I couldn't draw anything else."
Was that good? It was the honest truth, but he didn't know how Zatanna would react.
"Can I keep this? I love the way it looks."
Julio blinked.
"Sure?"
"Thank you. How about I give you something in return?"
Julio shook his head. "You don't have to."
"But I want to. Something this good deserves a reward."
"Really? Like what?"
Zatanna shrugged. "What would you like?"
Julio paused to think. Money would be kind of pointless in this place. So would most things, since the house could materialize pretty much anything.
Julio knew one thing he would like. But he knew it wasn't going to happen.
And for some reason, he felt comfortable enough to joke about it.
"I don't know. Maybe a kiss?" He said with a chuckle.
"Ok."
Julio immediately stopped.
"Huh?"
"This picture is beautiful. So a kiss doesn't sound so bad in return. I'm assuming this would be your first?"
Julio nodded.
"Alright. I'll take the lead then," Zatanna said as she stood up and put her chair beside Julio. "Can you do me a favor though? Keep this a secret between us? Don't want rumors spreading, do we?"
"Uh, yeah. I can keep a secret."
Who would even believe him?
"Great. Let's enjoy this."
Nudging Julio's nervous head up by touching his chin, Zatanna leaned in close. She was taller than him, so to Julio, it looked like a pair of luscious lips were descending toward his own. He was almost frozen in place, but he didn't think he would ever get a chance like this again. So he closed his eyes, tried to calm down his heartbeat, and let things take their course.
The moment Zatanna's lips touched his, Julio felt sparks fly. He didn't know if it was her magic or just his emotions going haywire, but he loved this feeling.
There was warmth spreading throughout his entire body, from his lips to his toes. And Zatanna's scent was heavenly, which calmed Julio down a bit.
This calmness did not last, as the kiss unexpectedly increased in intensity. Her lips began to smash against his. Julio tries to reciprocate, but he's too inexperienced. All he can do is try and keep up as Zatanna all but sucks the air out of him.
Zatanna pulls back, taking a soft bite of Julio's lip as she does. Her blue eyes lock to his brown. She seems... conflicted. Like she wants to do something she isn't sure she should.
"Julio…"
"Yeah?"
She brushed her fingers across his cheek.
"Is there anything else you'd like?"
Zatanna has always been my favorite DC female character, so this was something I've wanted to try. For those of you expecting things that were hotter and heavier, that's what the second chapter is for. I'm already working on it.
And like I said, I'll try to get back to A Cat's Weekend. I know poeple like it, and I want a continuation as well. Let's hope the inspiration bug bites.
Anyway, please leave reviews, tell me what you think, and I will see you all next time.
Later
