I was currently sitting in a barn while Aqua kept snoring next to me. I thought that I would have a life similar to those isekai heroes from now on, but in just one day, I came face to face with the truth that this was a real world for which none of my mangas or games could have prepared me for.
How did I get to that conclusion? Well…
"Ah, the fresh outside air", I started talking to myself as I took my first breath in this new world.
Also, my memory seems to be intact, so everything went fine in the transportation I guess.
The houses around me were built from red bricks, the streets looked right out of Europe from the Middle Ages.
There were no cars, bikes, no noise of horns, no karens speaking loudly on their phones, no power lines and no telecommunication cables.
"AHHH! …AHHH…!"
I looked around the street, watching people pass by.
"Woah, animal ears! There's someone with animal ears here! Cat ears to be exact! Wait, is that an elf? This is going to be awesome! Goodbye to my old boring life, hello to my new one!"
"AHHH! …AHHH! …AHHH…!"
I turned around and looked at Aqua, who was hugging her head and screaming.
"This can't be happening! This can't be happening!"
"Oh, but it is", I said to her, and I didn't even try to hide my pleasure in doing so.
But she just kept going with her mantra, pacing about while hugging her head.
Her waist-length hair was a mess. She looked crazy right now, but she was still a beauty if she didn't speak, although, he would still swipe right.
"Hey, calm down goddess, you can go back after we defeat the Demon King, but first, we should visit the guild. Everything starts from collecting information at a guild, that's the standard in RPGs."
"Huh…? You're supposed to be just a hikikomori gaming NEET, so why are you so reliable? Ah, by the way Kazuma, my name's Aqua. I don't mind you addressing me as goddess, but do call me by my name whenever possible, or else citizens will surround us and we won't be able to go on adventures and take down the Demon King. This might be a different world, but I'm still one of the revered gods in it." Aqua confidently said as she followed behind me.
I have been with her for only moments, and I am already tired of correcting her.
All right, there should be a group or order formed to take on the Demon King or an adventurer's guild made to defeat monsters.
Wait, order formed to defeat a Demon, I have definitely read that in a manga somewhere.
We, or more like I, asked around for information and I came to the conclusions:
Aqua is useless.
This is a beginners town.
The Guild is three blocks to the right.
I still have enough social skills to survive.
Aqua is still useless.
- Adventurer's Guild -
"Ah, welcome. Please approach the counter if you're looking for quests. If you're here to dine, then please take any empty seat!" A waitress with short red hair greeted us warmly as we entered the guild.
I was confused and worried why everyone was focusing on us, because this was one of the reasons I did not like going out.
… It took me a while to realize why they were looking this way.
"Hey, they're looking this way too blatantly. It must be the holy aura coming from me, they've discovered that I'm a goddess." The reason was the appearance of the goddess speaking dumb words.
Is heresy a crime here, 'cause I don't want to burn at the stake because of her…
For now, I ignored their gazes and went about my original objective.
Taking Aqua with me, I made a beeline for the counter.
When our turn came, we realized that Aqua being Aqua, forgot to give me any money when she sent me here and didn't bring any herself, so we ended up owing the guild money for registration and they gave us the basic tutorial details, about the quests and classes and jobs as they are called here, and the creepy detail about how souls were absorbed as experience points.
The counter lady then handed Aqua and I one card each.
"First, please fill in your height, weight, age and other details in the blanks."
I filled in my measurements on the form given to me by the counter lady.
Height was 175cm, weight was 65kg. Sixteen years old, black hair and green eyes.
"That'll be fine, please touch this card. This will display the strength of each of your abilities for reference when choosing your job. After accumulating skill points, you can learn skills that are available for your job. This is one of the key aspects in choosing occupations."
Oh, it was time for this.
The time to show my amazing potential and create a big commotion in the guild.
At least I expect that to happen due to the times three hack hanging on my back.
With a heart full of expectation, I touched the card.
"... All right, thank you. Satou Kazuma-san, right? Let's see… Strength, vitality, magic, agility, and speed… All of them are above average by half. Huh? Intelligence is way better than average and luck's extremely high! But it's not very relevant for adventurers. From the numbers, you can choose the most advanced Adventurer jobs! But since your luck's so high, I suggest you give up being an adventurer and be a merchant instead… What'll you like to do?"
"Um… I'd like to become an Adventurer for now, I will upgrade to an advanced job later."
I took my card from her and read through it.
Lvl: 1 - Job: {Adventurer}
Strength: 30 (avg 20)
Vitality: 30 (avg 20)
Magic: 30 (avg 20)
Agility: 30 (avg 20)
Speed: 30 (avg 20)
Intelligence: 60 (avg 9)
Luck: 210 (avg 30) [10 for members of the Axis Cult]
Skill Points available: 5
Skills currently available: none
Hmm… What I'm getting from this card is that I would be absolute toast without the three times booster, my magic wasn't as good as I would've liked, but I will have to make do.
I was brought out of my musing by the adventurers around me.
They were praising someone while Aqua stood there in between them, looking smug, thinking they were doing it for her, like that would ever happen.
I called her over and asked for her card. What I saw was… I don't know what to say.
Lvl: 1 - Job: {Arch-Priest}
Strength: 30
Vitality: 50
Magic: 9100
Agility: 30
Speed: 30
Intelligence: 1
Luck: 0
Her magic is over 9000!
Well, she is a goddess, but still. And she has 1 in intelligence, are you kidding me?
I'm not going to comment on her luck as I know she must have had pretty bad luck to end up stuck here.
We took a simple toad killing quest thinking how hard can killing a few toads be, considering we have a weapon made by the God of War himself.
On the toad fields…
"Ah! Help! Aqua, save me!"
"Puhehe! This is hilarious! Kazuma, your face is all red and you have tears in your eyes! You look really desperate!"
Yeah, I might have good stats and a badass axe, but I forgot that it would still have to be me who is going to be fighting, and when the toads of this world are the size of dinosaurs… you can't fault me for running when they're chasing me.
I continued to run and scream for help while the goddess of sloth and uselessness was leisurely watching the frogs chase me.
Does she not realize that once the toad was done with me, its sight would land on her?
"Aqua! Aqua! Stop laughing and save me!"
"For starters, add a '-sama' when you address me!"
"Aqua-sama-!"
I was on the verge of tears, looking back at the frog, I came to realize that it had finally understood the fact that there was a stationary target too.
Namely, Aqua.
"Can't be helped! All right, I'll save you, hikiNEET! However, you'll need to worship this goddess from tomorrow onward! You'll have to join the Axis sect in town and pray to me three times a day! You can't object if I take any side dishes from you during meals! In addition… Ugh?"
I turned my head at the sudden silence and saw that the frog had stopped moving with something blue dangling from the corner of its mouth.
"... Did she seriously get eaten?"
I did save her, mind you… After letting her enjoy the warm insides of the frog for a few minutes.
What did I learn from all this?
We are going to need new party members.
I need to learn skills 'cause I don't think I can learn using a weapon efficiently any other way.
I am broke and the stables are going to be my new home.
The next day, Aqua and I went back to the guild, and while Aqua posted the recruitment notice, I asked people to teach me some skills. Most of them taught me basic skills for free while some charged a small fee which I promised to pay after the completion of the toad quest.
Or has I like to call them, dinotoads.
I sat down next to Aqua after my skill hunt.
"... No one's coming…"
Aqua muttered dejectedly to herself.
She had been waiting for companions to show up for half the day.
The other adventurers saw our notice.
Besides us, several adventurers were recruiting members; they conducted interviews, talked with them and went off.
I knew very well why no one was coming… because Aqua wrote the damn thing.
I of course toned down her rambling in it, but we still were only expecting high tier jobs, which I couldn't talk Aqua out of.
I started going through my skill list and thought which ones I should learn when I was interrupted by… a kid?
"I saw the notice recruiting adventurers with top-tier jobs. Are you the ones who posted it?"
She regarded us with her red eyes.
Her smooth brown hair reached her shoulders. She was wearing a classic witch attire with a cloak, pointy hat, and staff.
The small, frail girl who looked to be about 11-12 years old, had an eyepatch covering one eye. She flung her cloak aside and said, or more like declared:
"My name is Megumin! My calling is that of an Archwizard, and one who controls the strongest offensive magic, Explosion!"
