Authors Note
I have made some changes, to this chapter, mainly to the runes on the bracelet. Adding a few more runes to add better protection.
I have also made some changes to how much mana the diamonds store. The conjured diamonds store 3 times Emily's mana pool, and natural diamonds are 30 times at 1 carat.
"I can explain," Emily said, looking at Leah and Emily.
"Charlie said that he was visiting you in Phoenix this year?" Leah said, sounding confused.
Emily frowned as she thought about how she should reply. She couldn't have Leah and Emily going around saying that she had been here. She hadn't planned on letting anyone know about her magic for as long as possible.
She hadn't even told Bella yet. For the last few years, she had held off by telling herself that Bella was too young. Though that was becoming harder for Emily to tell herself as she got older.
As for Leah and Emily, she hadn't been planning on telling them, given how that knowledge would end up in the hands of the wolves in the future.
"He is in a week's time," Emily said absentmindedly.
"Then how are you here?" Emily Young asked, confused.
"Magic?" Emily said a little unsurely.
"Magic?" Leah asked disbelievingly.
Emily summoned her magic, and two magical ropes shot out of Emily's hand and wrapped around both Leah and Emily, making them wobble.
Emily and Leah let out shouts of surprise as they tried to pull free of the magic ropes binding them.
"See magic," Emily said, attempting to be nonchalant before cutting the energy to the spell.
"What the fuck," Leah whispered as Emily Young took a step back.
"It's just magic," Emily said, hoping not to scare her two friends.
"Just magic. What do you mean just magic as if it's a common thing," Leah shouted.
"Says the girls from the tribe of shapeshifters," Emily shot back.
"They are just stories, and why are you here in the woods?" Emily Young asked, confused.
"Yeah," Leah said, walking towards Emily.
"There is a magic vein in the woods im using," Emily said.
"Magic vein?" Leah asked with interest.
"Yes, think of it like the roots of a tree with wild magic flowing through it," Emily said.
"So, how did you get here? Did you fly?" Emily Young asked.
"Fly? Do you know how far that is? No, I just teleported," Emily said.
"Wow, wait, you can teleport?" Leah asked excitedly.
"Yes, but only to places I have been to before," Emily said.
"Wait, what are you using the magic vein for?" Emily Young asked.
"Well, I only have so much magic, so I can't just cast spells all I want. There are two solutions for that, though.
First, I can wait for my magic to grow, but that takes a lot of time. Or I can store magic in diamonds that I can draw upon at a later date," Emily explained.
"So that's what you were doing, storing magic in the diamond on the necklace," Leah said, looking at the necklace in Emily's hands.
"Yes, I just got it, and I couldn't wait," Emily said embarrassingly.
"Can you show us some magic?" Leah asked excitedly.
Emily paused for a moment. She had always wanted to share her magic with other people.
"I guess, but we will have to find somewhere other people won't see?" Emily said.
"What about the third beach?" Leah suggested.
"No, that is that cove area on Scotts Creek," Emily Young said.
"Oh yes, that works. No one will see us there," Leah agreed.
"Lead the way then," Emily said.
"So, how long have you had magic?" Leah asked as they walked through the trail in the woods.
"Since I was born, as far as I know," Emily replied.
"When did you first use magic?" Emily Young asked.
"I am not really sure," Emily lied.
She may be willing to share that she had magic, but she had no idea where to start about having another life before this one and how she woke up in this life after being killed. That was a secret that she would take to her grave.
"When do you remember using it?" Leah asked.
"When I was around nine, I was using it to move things around as well as to cast what I called a cooling charm to keep myself cool in Phoenix," Emily said.
"Oh, that seems helpful. If we ever go somewhere hot, you will have to cast it on us," Leah said.
"I could cast it on you now, but it's not that hot here," Emily offered.
"How hot is it in Phoenix today?" Emily Young asked.
"Would you like to see?" Emily said, smiling mischievously.
"Sure hit us," Leah said daringly.
Emily gathered her magic and cast a warming charm on both Leah and Emily Young, heating up the area around them.
"Fuck," Leah said as she started fanning herself.
"Enough, that is horrible," Emily Young said.
Emily cancelled the charms on both of them as they let out sighs of relief.
"How do you live like that?" Emily Young asked.
"Maybe she has the cooling charm on constantly?" Leah suggested.
"No, I only use the cooling charm if it's really hot or if I am going for a run or something," Emily said.
"That isn't really hot?" Emily Young asked in disbelief.
"No, it was 120 the other day," Emily said.
"Move, find somewhere cool to live like Forks," Leah said jokingly.
"I would need a warming charm if I lived here," Emily shot back jokingly.
"Be careful on the way down," Emily Young said as they reached the trail's end, and it started to snake down a steep hill.
"Can you fly?" Leah asked, smirking.
"Err, sort of. I can lift myself into the air and move around, but it's not flying. Why do you want to try it?" Emily asked.
"Yes," Leah said instantly.
Emily looked at Emily Young, who shook her head. "I will stay on my two feet," she said quickly.
Emily focused on one of the charms on her bracelet before using her magic to lift both her and Leah into the air hovering a bit above the ground.
"Ready?" Emily asked.
"Come one, let's go," Leah said, looking around.
Emily rolled her eyes, surprised at how trusting and daring Leah was. Emily checked to see if she would need to use more than one charm but was surprised at how little mana it needed to keep both her and Leah floating in the air.
"Let's go then," Emily said.
With a burst of speed, they flew off the side of the cliff and were hovering above a 30 or 40-foot drop to the beach below. Emily flew over to Leah, who was looking around excitedly.
Emily grabbed onto her elbow. "You okay?"
"Ya, can we go higher?" Leah asked.
"Higher?" Emily asked in disbelief.
"Ya come on, I bet the view is amazing," Leah said.
"Okay," Emily said, and both of them shot up into the sky.
Emily kept flying up until they were higher than the trees.
"This good enough?" Emily asked once they were over 100 feet in the air.
"This is amazing. I wish I could fly all the time," Leah said as she spun around.
"Come on, I think your cousin must be freaking out seeing this high up," Emily said as she lowered them towards the ground.
"I am sure she is. She hates heights," Leah said, laughing.
"This place really is quite well hidden," Emily said as they landed on the rocky beach.
"Hidden enough to show us some magic?" Leah asked.
"Does flying not count," Emily asked, rolling her eyes.
"It does, but you must have more," Emily Young asked.
"Hmm, well, I can conjure things," Emily said.
Looking around the beach, Emily walked over to where there was a large boulder sticking out of the ground. Still using the magic in the charm of the bracelet she had used to fly, she conjured two small benches on either side of the boulder.
Then she transfigured the bolder into a stone table before turning around to look at Leah and Emily. Both of them walked over to the table, looking amazed as they started to feel the table and the benches before taking a seat.
"You... wow," Emily Young said.
"Could you do something with all the dead wood?" Leah asked.
"Like what?"
"Hmm, could you make them into benches and tables as well?"
"I guess you need a lot of benches and tables?" Emily asked.
Emily lifted the wood into the air and transfigured it into benches and tables before placing it at an angle on either side of the stone table, making a semi-circle looking out to the sea.
"This is starting to look like a cool place to hang out," Leah said, looking around.
"We are like an hour's walk from La-Push," Emily reminded her.
"Well, I mean during the day when we want to avoid all the kids from Forks who come to invade our beaches or when hikers come," Leah said.
Emily looked down at her watch, checking the time.
"Do you have to go?" Emily Young asked.
"No, it's only mid-day. I don't need to be home till 4. You hungry?" Emily asked.
"Sure, you going to fish?" Leah teased, knowing neither she nor Bella liked fishing.
"Not a chance," Emily said before she used the last of the magic in the charm to conjure a BBQ.
"We still don't have any food to cook on the BBQ," Leah said.
"If only I could make things from thin air," Emily said sarcastically.
"Wait, you can make food?" Leah asked, surprised and confused.
"Yep, and no, I don't know how it works. I just chalk it up to magic," Emily said, knowing what was on both of their minds.
Emily connected her magic to a fresh charm and started to conjure up food, starting with burgers and sausages, before remembering buns.
"Two burgers and two hotdogs each should be enough?" Emily asked.
"Ya, that's more than enough," Leah said as she inspected the food.
With a small amount of magic, the BBQ was filled with charcoal, and she created a fireball in her hand and lit everything on fire.
"Man, I wish I had magic. Hey, can you make magic items?" Leah asked hopefully.
Emily paused as she thought about it. In her past life, she had made an enchanted ring that would constantly cool or warm her to a pleasing temperature regardless of the weather.
"Err, maybe I can use gemstones and runes to do so, but it would be charging them up after they used all the magic that would be hard," Emily said after thinking about it.
"Ah, you would have to come to charge it every time it ran dry," Emily Young said.
"It also depends on what you want the ring to do. I would have to run tests to see what I could get it to do and then look into a way to charge it," Emily said, making up her mind to do so as soon as possible.
After all, she already planned to make some enchanted rings for Bella, mainly things like scent blocking. As she thought about it, tons of ideas passed through her mind, and she couldn't wait to get started. As for charging them up once they had drained all the mana, Emily had a few ideas, but they would need testing first.
"Err, we need a spatula and plates," Emily Young said.
"Oh right, my bad," Emily said as she conjured the items Emily asked for on the table.
"Now you have to visit more," Leah said, smiling.
"Sure, but we can't walk around La Push. What if someone saw me and asked Dad about me," Emily said.
"Oh, I guess we could stick to the beaches," Leah said, sounding disappointed.
"I mean, I can teleport, so we can go to Port Angeles, maybe even to Phoenix."
"Really, can we go anywhere?" Leah asked excitedly, with Emily Young looking excited as well.
"Err, I think to take us from here to Phoenix would take maybe 30 to 40% of my current mana pool. As for other countries, I am sure I would need to save up mana to take all three of us," Emily said as she watched the food be cooked.
"Maybe we should wait till we are a bit older before going to a different country," Emily Young said.
"Let's start with Port Angeles and move from there," Emily said as the food was plated up.
"Will you be going back after this?" Leah asked.
"Yes, I can't walk around La Push," Emily said, picking up a burger.
"Aww, when is the next time you could come back?" Leah asked excitedly.
"Not sure it will be a few days, I think. I can give you a call the night before, and we can meet here," Emily suggested.
"That works," Leah and Emily said.
"Will this bench and table stay here?" Emily Young asked.
"As far as I know, yes. Maybe if I die, it will revert back, but I don't see why it would. After all, im not actively using magic to keep it changed," Emily said after a bit of thought.
"At least we will have somewhere private to hang out now," Leah said happily.
"Hmm, let me add some more things before I leave," Emily said, standing up and walking to the cliffside.
Using her magic, Emily turned the rock into water, carving out a small cave before she added benches on either side built into the wall with some cushions.
"Err, how are we going to explain this?" Emily Young asked.
"You found it like that? What, you think people will see this and jump to a witch did it?" Emily asked sarcastically.
"Can you add a table?" Leah asked.
"Sure," Emily said, drawing on the magic in the charms and creating a stone table.
"Is it okay for you to be using so much magic?" Emily Young asked.
"Yes, the charms don't store much magic. Also, I just filled up the necklace, which stores at least 40 times my current mana pool, whereas each charm only stores two times my mana pool," Emily explained.
"Is the magic vine an unlimited source?" Leah asked.
"No, and I am near the end of the branch of the vein filling the necklace using a large amount of magic in it. However, it recovers over time even if I drain it dry," Emily explained.
"Oh, and my own magic recovers over time as well. I used about 10% of my mana pool teleporting to here, and that has almost completely recovered since I have been here," Emily added.
"Maybe we shouldn't tell anyone about this place," Leah suggested to her cousin.
"Worried everyone else will hog it?" Emily teased.
"Of course, they will. The older boys will force us to leave," Leah argued back.
"Okay, I won't tell a soul, but I think when they see the tables on the beach from the trail, they will come and investigate and find the cave," Emily Young said.
"We have to go. I want to fill up the two charms I emptied today before I leave," Emily said.
"Can you teleport us back?" Leah asked.
"I guess it will cost next to nothing mana-wise," Emily said, reaching out to grab Leah and Emily's hands.
"You may want to close your eyes. The first time can make you very dizzy," Emily warned.
Emily watched as Emily Young closed her eyes as Leah kept her open full of excitement.
"Okay, 3, 2, 1, and go," Emily said, teleporting the three of them back to the wild magic vein.
Leah stumbled and fell to the ground with a groan making Emily Young open her eyes and look around, surprised before she saw Leah.
She didn't close her eyes?" Emily asked knowingly.
"Nope, I did warn her."
"The world is upside down," Leah moaned as she closed her eyes.
"Give it five or ten minutes, and it will pass," Emily said as she took a seat.
Reaching out with her magic, she quickly filled up the two charms that she had emptied before cutting the magic off. She wondered how long it would take the magic vein to fully recover. After all, she had taken around 36 times her total mana pool. If she brought any more jewellery, she would have to see if the magic vein was larger further upstream. If not, then she would have to fill them up much slower in order to avoid depleting the vein.
"Well, I will leave you with her. I have two hours to get back home," Emily said, doing her best not to giggle at Leah's situation.
"Okay, bye," Emily Young said, giving Emily a hug goodbye as Leah let out a moan.
Emily smiled before she teleported away. Emily looked around as she appeared in the hilly area to the side of her house. Seeing that there was no one around, Emily walked up the hills and onto the tiny side street that their house was on. In fact, she wasn't even sure if it was a side street. It seemed more like parking for them and the house across from them. Walking to the house, Emily opened the door and walked into the house.
"Hey," Bella greeted from the couch as she walked into the house.
"Hey, reading Romeo and Juliet again?" Emily asked.
"No, it's Persuasion," Bella replied.
"Ah, you aren't going to try and make me read this one, are you," Emily asked with her eyes narrowing.
"No, I know you have something against the classics," Bella said jokingly.
That's not true. I love some of the classics. Romeo and Juliet is just a depressing story," Emily said, rolling her eyes.
"Mum has just gone shopping. She will be back soon," Bella said, seeing Emily looking around.
"Ah, okay," Emily said as she took a seat on the couch and turned the TV on that, zoned out as thinking.
Emily really wanted to start buying loose diamonds to experiment with and do so without gaining everyone's attention, especially people like the IRS.
After all, she had no way to explain how large sums of money were being put into her bank and why she was spending it on diamonds. What she really needed was a fake identity and a bank account to go with it, and a way to explain where all the money came from. However, she didn't have the first idea of how to go about that. She vaguely remembered that in Breaking Dawn, Bella used a man called J. Jenkins to buy fake ID documents, but she was sure that wasn't his real name.
She also didn't have Alice to point her in the right direction, so she didn't think she would be able to find him. Other vampires were options as some of them lived and interacted with humans, and they would need ID to do so.
The first coven that popped into her mind was the Vultori, be she instantly dismissed going anywhere near them. Other covens popped into her mind, but she only knew the country they lived in, such as the Irish or Egyptian coven.
Then she remembered the Denali Coven. They were no doubt the easiest for her to find. She knew they lived in Denali, and as animal drinkers, they interacted with humans quite often, even taking some as lovers.
They must have someone they use for ID documents as well as a way of cleaning their money. Also, an added bonus was the fact that they wouldn't look at her as dinner.
She would need to use the computer later tonight so that she could teleport there and start looking around.
"You off out again?" Mom asked as Emily headed for the door.
"Yep, I will be back later," Emily said as she left.
Emily to the left and started walking down the hill, allowing her to avoid the long walk all the way down the street. Not wanting to waste time, Emily jogged the rest of the distance to the jewellery store.
Entering the store, Emily pulled out the receipt and walked up to the counter.
"Hi, I had a ring resized yesterday to pick up today," Emily said, handing the staff member her receipt.
"I see. Let me go find it for you," the woman said, taking the receipt and walking into the back area.
Emily took her time to look at the earrings before the staff member returned carrying an envelope.
"Here we go. Please try it on and make sure it fits," the woman said, handing the ring back to Emily.
Emily slipped it onto her middle finger, ensuring it fit. Emily also used her magic to check that all the mana was still inside the ring.
"That's perfect, thank you," Emily said.
"No problem. If there are any problems, please come back," she said warmly as Emily left.
After leaving the shopping centre, she took a left and followed the path till she got to a hilly area which had an old quarry and walked up the dusty path until she wasn't visible to the road she had just turned off.
Emily cast a warming charm on herself, knowing that where she was going to end up was going to be very cold. With everything prepared, she teleported to Denali State Park. Emily stumbled as she appeared in the forest, and she was surprised at how much of her mana pool had been consumed. It had cost her nearly 20% of her mana to make the teleport.
Then again, it was 2500 miles from Phoenix compared to the 900 miles that Forks was. However, it was a good indicator that with her current mana pool, she probably couldn't take both Leah and Emily to a different country.
Looking around, Emily had expected everything to be covered in snow. But it wasn't. There were grass and green trees for miles around. In the distance, however, she could make out mountains covered in snow. Now she had to decide if she would fly towards the mountains hoping to find them or if she would visit the nearby town and ask about them there.
Eventually, she decided that the town would be the best option compared to just flying around a mountain hoping to bump into them or find their house.
She knew that they no doubt went to town, and given how beautiful vampires were, Emily was sure they would stand out and most people would remember them.
Pulling on the mana in her ring, Emily flew into the air and made her way towards the town. As she flew towards the town, Emily wondered what it was with vampires living in small towns. Not that she was complaining at the moment, given that she was looking for vampires. Emily quickly arrived at the edge of the town and landed back on the ground.
Emily cut off her connection to the ring and looked at one of the charms on the bracelet in which she had engraved several runes.
In her first life, she had learned that there was no such thing as a runic language to her sadness. Or at least inscribing or engraving runes into something didn't suddenly make them magic items. However, after much experimenting, Emily learned that she could imbue spells into runes as she was inscribing or engraving them as long as they had a source of mana to draw from.
With that, Emily had created a ring that drew magic from a diamond on the ring, which would be used to constantly keep her at a pleasant temperature. She used two runes, one to act as a connection to the mana stored in the diamond and another to act as the cooling and warming spell.
So with her past experience, Emily connected all ten of the charms together under a single rune turning it into a large mana pool. Then she created another charm and added the rune that she had used to link all the charms together. Meaning that the runes that she added to that charm would have access to all of the mana in the entire ten charms.
Then she added three protection runes, each with their own spell imbued into them. The first rune would stop any physical object coming within 2 inches of her. The second rune would set that object on fire if she felt in danger and the third rune she had set to protect her mind.
Emily was pretty sure that the Denalis wouldn't actually attack her, but she wouldn't risk it, and for the final rune, Emily wasn't sure if she had natural mental protection, like Bella, so she decided to add it just in case, as she knew most vampire gifts worked on the mind.
Of course, she wouldn't know until she met a vampire with a gift, but she was pretty sure it would work. Walking into the town, Emily pondered where to start her search. As she walked down the street, she saw a dinner and decided that it was as good as anywhere to start.
"Hey, what can I get you?" the waitress asked as she walked into the dinner.
"Can I get an egg, sausage and cheese and a cup of coffee," Emily said as she took a seat.
Looking around the dinner, Emily was a little disappointed to see there was only another person inside.
"You just passing through?" the waitress asked as she brought her a cup of coffee.
"I am visiting some friends," Emily said as she took the cup of coffee.
"Oh, who you come all this way to meet?" the waitress asked.
"My cousins Tanya, Kate and Irina Denali," Emily said.
The look of surprise on the waitress's face was a good sign that she knew them and that there was a good chance Emily would be able to find them.
"Order up," a man called out.
"Oh, let me go get your food," the waitress said.
"You haven't seen them today, have you? My phone has stopped working, and I don't want to be waiting outside their house if they aren't there," Emily asked the waitress once she came back with her breakfast sandwich.
"No, not today. But Tanya is usually at the bookstore," the waitress said.
"Ah, I will try there after this," Emily said, thankful to the waitress.
Emily quickly ate the sandwich and drank her cup of coffee before taking both back to the counter.
"Thank you, keep the change," Emily said, handing a 20-dollar bill over to the waitress.
"Thank you. Have a nice day."
Walking out of the dinner, Emily made her way down the main street, looking for the books store. Thankfully due to it being a small town, almost all the shops were on the main road.
Walking into the bookstore, Emily was surprised at how large it was and how many books were in the store.
"Hi, is there anything I can help you with?" a smooth and warm voice asked.
Emily turned around to see a breathtaking woman. The woman had long, curly, strawberry-blond hair, honey-coloured eyes and perfect skin.
It was a few seconds later that she remembered that this had to be a vampire. Emily had thought that the books had exaggerated how good-looking vampires were. Now seeing a vampire, she knew that wasn't the case before she reminded herself that beauty was a way to lure prey in. Emily blushed, realising that she had been staring at her and not saying anything.
"Sorry, Tanya, right?" Emily asked.
"Yes, have we met?" Tanya asked, sounding confused.
Emily was surprised at how natural Tanya made her confusion sound. If Emily didn't know for a fact that Vampires never forgot anything, she would have believed that Tanya was confused.
"No, my name is Emily. I wonder if we can have a private chat?" Emily asked, holding out her hand.
"Nice to meet you, Emily. I think this is pretty private," Tanya said, looking around the empty store.
"I don't think you want anyone walking in as we talk about the supernatural," Emily said.
Instantly Tanya's eyes snapped to her as she stared Emily down.
"The supernatural?" Tanya asked in a disbelieving tone.
Emily raised her hand, creating a blue ball of fire, making Tanya leap back at vampire speed. Emily was surprised to see the speed in person. It was so fast that Tanya vanished and reappeared a foot away.
"Yes, the supernatural," Emily said, putting the fireball out.
Tanya frowned as her body visibly relaxed, seeing the fire vanish.
"You're not a vampire," Tanya stated.
"Im a witch," Emily said.
"A witch?" Tanya asked sceptically.
"What vampires and werewolves are allowed to exist but not witches?" Emily asked challengingly.
Emily saw Tanya's lips twitch.
"Maybe we should continue this somewhere else," Tanya suggested.
"Sure," Emily agreed.
