DISCLAIMER I DO NOT OWN BROTHERS CONFLICT IN ANYWAY SHAPE OR FORM
"I'd like you to go with the princess today, if Prince Zane is accompanying her," Richard told Chrissy as they walked to the front doors with Billy, Yusuke and a few other gaurds. "If he's as promiscuous as he claims to be, she'll need somebody with her that can go with her into certain places I or any other man really shouldn't."
"I understand, will do," Chrissy said.
"And um, don't try and get him alone if he trys anything, no matter how mad he gets you," Richard insisted.
"Is this still about what I did to his uncle that one time? I was young and naive," Chrissy insisted.
"And lucky Prince Oliver saw the whole thing and understood what happened," Richard reminded her.
Chrissy shrugged her shoulders.
"What did she do?" Yusuke whispered to Billy.
"It was epic!" Billy whispered back, "King Dimitri's youner son, Prince Stanley, had gotten a little handsy with a few ladies at a garden party and when one screamed out in fear, Chrissy heard and flipped him over back and nearly broke his arm! This was back when she was still in training!"
"Whoa," Yusuke said looking at the woman who usually looked so calm and cool.
They had just arraived at the door, with two gaurds heading outside to inspect the waiting car, as King Dimitri walked past.
"Oh your way sire?" Richard asked as the king came to the door with his own gaurds and servants.
"Yes, thank you for your hospitality," Dimitri said as he and Richard seemed to share a look before fully walking out of the palace.
"Is there something wrong between the king and Richard?" Yusuke asked.
"There's a little tension between Richard and most of Poulon," Billy tried to explain before he shifted his eyes, "I'll explain later." Yusuke followed his gaze and realized Ema, Masaomi Ukyo and Zane were now approaching.
"Damn, she looks like she's been a princess all her life," Yusuke mentioned as she walked past him.
"Well technically she has," Billy said.
"You know what I mean," Yusuke said. He looked behind him and saw a few other Poulon gaurds joining the Elence guards as well.
"Yusuke, come on, you're going to ride in the limo with the princess and your brothers," Chrissy suddenly called out.
"Yes ma'am," Yusuke said as he dashed to her side.
"Billy, you're going to be in the front, along with Prince Zane's gaurd," Chrissy also instructed, "the rest of you, half of each Elence and Poulon guards in the front and back car."
"Yes Ma'am," the other guards all replied.
"We're still picking up Erica and Hannah, right?" Ema asked as she got into the car.
"We'll be picking them up from the House of Council," Chrissy assured her as she helped Ema into the limo.
Ema had just gotten herself situated when she suddenly realized Zane had taken the seat right next to her. He smirked at her.
"I hope the car isn't too crowded and we have to get a separate car for your staff," he said.
"My staff? You mean my brothers?" Ema asked.
"Can't help what they are, can you?" Zane retorted.
"I don't consider my brothers mere staff members," Ema insisted.
"Don't worry about it Ema," Masaomi said as he and Ukyo got situated themselves.
"We actually enjoy working with you on this," Ukyo mentioned.
"Thank you, you too," Ema said kindly.
"Whatever," Zane said.
Ema shook her head at the prince's attitude right as she saw Yusuke climbing in as well. Ema noticed the slight glare he shot at her and Zane sitting so close together. She suddenly felt really bad about it, like she had betrayed him or something.
Yusuke took a seat closest to one door while Chrissy was on the other.
"Let's go," Chrissy said into her earpiece and the limo started.
Ema sat as confident as she could as they drove, even though she was starting to feel butterflies in her stomach. What if she suddenly made a mistake and didn't look as confident as she was feeling earlier before back at the palace.
'Don't, don't let the worry build up. You got this. You can do this!' she told herself. Before she knew it, the limo had arrived at the House of Council.
Another gaurd opened the door and Erica and Hannah both piled in.
"Good morning, your majesty," Erica, "and Masaomi." She winked at him as she got herself comfortable.
"Yes good morning to everyone, including Prince Zane?" Hannah said in surprise.
"Prince Zane?" Erica also spoke out, "what are you doing here?"
"Trying to win over a young maiden," Zane said winking at Ema.
"Huh? Has there been some sort of arrangement between you two?" Hannah asked.
"Not yet, but there could be," said Zane.
Both women looked at Ema for confirmation.
"Uh, well, it's too early to firmly say," she quickly explained.
"Oh, of course," Erica said.
"How's everything going with the housing projects Erica?" Ema asked trying to change subjects, "any improvements?"
"No, I'm afraid not, but the residents of the building are eager to see you and tell you their story," Erica said.
Ema nodded, "I hope I can be of help."
Soon the limo was driving along a different kind of area, where nice houses and apartment buildings stood. It looked nice and welcoming.
"Are these all parts of your friend's construction project?" Ema asked.
"Yep, and for the most part he's been doing good," said Erica.
"What's with you and this guy?" Yusuke suddenly asked, "you two an item or something?"
"Uh, no we're just old friends from school. He's married anyway," Erica quickly said.
"Well, that's nice to know," she heard Masaomi say softly.
"Why would you care if Howie and I were together?" she asked.
"Oh, no reason," Masaomi tried to say, embarrassed that she had heard him..
"Hmm," Erica smirked at him before she glanced at the window. "Oh we're here." Ema looked past her to Masaomi's side of the window to see a very old looking building with a construction crew and a group of old ladies standing outside it.
The minute the limo stopped, Erica opened and got out herself without waiting for a guard.
"Howie," she called out. A man in a suite and a hard hat quickly stepped forward waving.
"Hey Erica!" he said.
"I guess that's Howie," Masaomi said as he got out himself, with everyone else climbing out right behind him. Ema was the last. She stood on the sidewalk trying to get a better look at the old building that apparently was causing the trouble for everyone.
"Princess Ema?" Erica called out. Ema walked over to her and her friend.
"Howie, meet Princess Ema," Erica introduced.
"It is an honor and a privilege my lady," Howie said giving a bow.
"It's nice to meet you too," Ema said, "Erica speaks highly of you."
"Thank you," Howie replied. He looked towards the group of old ladies as one with a cane walked forward.
"Um, your majesty? May I also introduce you to Mrs. Lily Bubbly, the oldest resident of Gardens House," Howie said, gesturing towards the woman.
"Hello," Ema said kindly to the woman. The woman walked up close to Ema and looked her over.
"I remember, when I was a little girl, the day your great-great-grandmother was crownd queen," she said a tired old voice. "It was one of the most exciting days of my young life. Even though there was a war going on, we managed to make that day a happy one to celebrate her coronation."
"Oh really?" Ema said a little shocked by the woman's declaration.
"I remember celebrating right in this street in front of this building with several of my friends, happy and excited about a young new queen. It was like something out of a fairytale," Mrs. Bubbly continued.
"You mean you grew up here?" Ema asked.
"Several of us had," said Mrs. Bubbly nodding to the other women behind her, "our mothers took care of us while our fathers were away helping to keep the country safe from the war, doing things like guarding the border."
"So this place is special to you?" Ema replied, "that's why you don't want to see this building torn down? I can understand that."
"Actually it's more than that," said Mrs. Bubbly, "we didn't want to bring it up as a means to save the building unless we had to. But when Mr. Holms said you were coming personally to speak with us about it, we figured it was time to reveal what is so special about our home. Would the princess like to accompany us inside?"
"I would," Ema said cautiously, looking back at Chrissy. She nodded and motioned a few other guards to head to the building ahead of them. Two Elence and one Poulon guards quickly hurried to the front door and looked around before giving Chrissy a thumbs up.
"Let's go in then," Mrs. Bubbly said as she and her friends all walked to their home, with Ema group behind them. Inside the front doors, Ema saw two sets of stairs, one leading up and another leading down.
"This way, my princess," Mrs. Bubbly said as she gripped the railing to the stairs going down while one of her friends took her other hand and the two slowly walked down.
"Let us go first, your majesty," Chrissy said as she and a Poulon guard walked behind the two women. Ema walked closely behind them.
"Do we all have to go down?" Zane asked.
"No," Yusuke said with a a little sneer as he started to walk down as well. Zane glared back.
"Well, I guess I should anyway," he said as he brushed past Yusuke and to Ema's side.
Ema didn't seem to pay him much mind as she kept walking down the stairs until she came to a dark and dank basement. Mrs. Bubbly's helper quickly truned on a light in the center of the room.
"What's so special about this?" Zane asked.
Mrs. Bubbly and the other women that had followed Ema down all shot Zane an angry glare. There was no way of hiding their dislike for him.
"You'll see soon enough, Prince of Poulon!" Mrs. Bubbly snapped bitterly as she walked to an empty and dirty bookcase. She along with two others started to pull at it.
"Can we help?" Ukyo offered, as he, Masaomi, Yusuke and even Howie pulled at it as well. They all seemed surprised as the case and the wall it was up against was pulled out to reveal a hidden room.
Mrs. Bubbly walked in and turned on another light.
"Come in Princess, come in!" she encouraged.
Chrissy walked in first with Ema right behind her.
Inside was what looked like a small but comfy looking apartment.
What is this?" Ema asked.
"This was the safe room our mothers helped hide many of the Jewish immigrants," Mrs. Bubbly explained.
"Hide? But I thought King Stephon the 1st said the Jewish refugees were welcome here, and Queen Katherine maintained that," Ema said.
"They did," Mrs. Bubbly concurred, "but they also knew those filthy Nazis would send spies to our country to find and abducted the poor people and take them back to those horried camps and their deaths! So both the king and later the queen, also encouraged us citizens to help hid them if need be, if we or they felt they were in danger. So our mothers changed out the storage area down and turned it into a living space to help hid the refugees if need be. I sometimes remember coming down here with my mother with supplies and food for the different people while they hid until they could find a more permanent safe place."
"Is this kind of like that Ann Frank girl who had hide in an attic?" Yusuke asked.
"Yes, in a way," said Mrs. Bubbly, "though we didn't know of the poor girl at the time. We mostly took our inspiration from the underground railroad from America during times of slavery. We'd help move the refugees around so it would be harder to find them and capture them."
"That was very brave and nobel of your mothers," Ema said impressed.
Mrs. Bubbly looked touched by Ema's praise.
"Come look at this," she motioned Ema to one of the walls and moved the table that was in front of it. There Ema saw several small scribbles on the wall. They looked like words but were so small it was hard to make out what they said.
"These are the names of all the people we helped hide in here during the war. We wanted to make sure they weren't forgotten should the worse happen," Mrs. Bubbly explained.
"I see," Ema said as she kneeld down closer to try and make out the names. It made her realize how much it would mean to keep something like this safe, and lost to obscurity.
"I understand now," she said to Mrs. Bubbly, "I understand why you don't want your home destroyed. A place like this should be preserved." She took a deep breath before she spoke again, "I'm sorry Mr. Holms, I'll do what else I can, but I have to side with Mrs. Bubbly and the other residents of this building and ask that it not be destroyed."
She turned around and was surprised to see he was busy filming some the basement structure with an intense look.
"Howie," Erica called out.
"Huh?" Howie said snapping to attention.
"The princess was trying to tell you something," Erica said.
"What?" Howie said looking at Ema.
"I was saying sir, that I have to side with the Garden House residents and not allow you to tear it down," Ema said again.
Howie nodded, "I understand. I wouldn't feel right destroying this place either."
"What were you filming though?" Masaomi asked.
"The structure and support here," Howie explained, "I've seen other old buildings like this. The make them so they can be moved, usually in one piece. Granted it takes a long time and it cost a good a penny."
"But you really think it can be moved?" Ema asked.
"As in move the building in its entirety so we can still live it without blocking your project?" Mrs. Bubbly asked.
"I bet we could, if we had the time and money," said Howie.
"I can work on getting you the extra time," Erica offered.
"I know you can," Howie said winking at her, "but there's still the problem of the budget for it."
Ema pondered the problem in her head.
"I tell you what Mr. Holms, if you can allow me to the time to discuss the financial part of the problem with my grandfather the king, I'd be honored to help get you the money needed for such a task," Ema offered.
"I'll do my best to stall. In the meantime, I cam also get some of my men to scout out a good place to move the building," said Howie.
"Thank you," said Ema.
"Yes thank you Mr. Holms," Mrs. Bubbly also said. She and her friends looked very much relieved by this new development.
"You know, I think that once I get this building moved and am able to build the new one, I'll call the Garden House 2, after the original," Howie said as everyone made their way back upstairs.
"That's quite kind of you sir," said Mrs. Bubbly as everyone made it to the top. She walked back to Ema.
"You know, seeing you down and your reactions to our building's history, it sort of reminded me of your great-great grandmother. I never had the honor of meeting her in person, but I saw plenty of her in news reals of the day. I saw the way she do things like inspecting buildings and visiting her people. It always made me feel like she was a good and caring woman. And I was proud to call her my queen. And now, meeting you, her descendent, I am proud to call you my princess and a member of Queen Katherine's family."
With that, she backed toward her friends and all of them took one big sweeping bow to her.
"Long live Princess Ema of Elence," Mrs. Bubbly said.
"Long live Princess Ema of Elence," her friends all repeated.
Ema felt a little tear in her eye.
"Thank you ladies," she said, "I will do everything in my power to preserve your home."
"I have no doubt you will," said Mrs. Bubbly.
As Ema came out of the building, she heard a few people calling her and could see some children on the street waving at her while being held back gently by Billy and the other guards.
"We love you princess!"
"You're so pretty!"
Ema kindly waved back to them which seemed to get them even more excited.
"This feels great," Ema declared happily.
"Yes, now we have a new plan that could help everyone," said Erica excited.
"I will try and find a way to get Mr. Holms the money, I promise," Ema swore to her.
"Maybe you can do some sort of charity drive or something. My mom and aunts do a lot those for things similar to this," Zane suggested.
Ema looked at him. "That might not be a bad idea, I'll discuss it with grandfather later. Now I have to worry about the meeting for the hospital."
"Already prepared," Chrissy said looking up as it suddenly got windy. Ema and the others all looked up to see a helicopter coming down in an empty lot nearby.
"Madam Chrissy, the new set of guards are already on en rout to Almara. They'll meet you there," one of the other guards called out.
"Good, the rest of you return to the palace. Let the king know the meeting here was a success," Chrissy said as she ushered everyone else to the helicopter.
"Here let me help you in," Yusuke said to Ema, taking her hand.
"Thank you Yusuke, Ema said as she climbed in.
"Yeah thanks a lot," Zane said as he used Yusuke as boost to get in himself and shoving Yusuke away at the same time, "is there even any room for you?"
"He has a point," said his own guard.
"No we should be fine. If we weren't, Richard would have made different arrangements," Chrissy assured him as she helped Hannah and Erica in as well. Masaomi and Ukyo then climb in with Chrissy, Yusuke and Zane's guard behind them.
"See you when you get back," Billy said as he started to shut the door.
"You're not coming Billy?" Ema asked.
"No, no room, but it's okay, I don't like flying in helicopters too much anyway, too shaky for my taste," said Billy, "good Princess. I'm sure you'll do well."
"Thank you," Ema managed to call out right as the door shut. Slowly the helicopter started to rise up in the air.
"Here goes nothing,' she thought as she took off for her next task. She looked back down to the Garden House as it slowly disappeared from sight. She really did hope she had helped settle everything that would help everyone. The way the ladies had spoken of her grandmother and then praised her felt gratifying.
'So this is what it really means to be a princess?' she thought.
