"Eddie relax. It's been almost two minutes. We'll know soon."
Jamie placed his hands over Eddie's as she paced the bathroom.
"I can't help it Jamie. I'm anxious and I'm nervous."
Eddie paced the bathroom some more and froze when the timer on her phone went off. Turning it off, she took a deep breath and looked at the results on the test on the counter.
"Jamie…"
Jamie looked at her and then down at the test.
"We're having a baby."
A watery smile came to Eddie's face.
"We're having a baby."
Jamie pulled Eddie into his arms and into a heated kiss. Eddie's watched beeped and she pulled away from Jamie. Sighing she looked over at the pill box by the sink.
"Time to take my meds. Give me a minute babe."
Grabbing for the glass next to the sink, she filled it with water and took her anti-rejection meds. Stepping back over to Jamie, she took his arms and wrapped them around her waist. He buried his face in her neck and placed several delicate kisses to her neck.
"Ok Eddie. Jamie. Let's see how far along you are."
Eddie squeezed Jamie's hand and watched as Doctor Carollson put some gel on her belly, placing the wand over it. The couple could only stare at the machine as they began to hear a squishing sound. Jamie was the first to speak up.
"Is that the heartbeat?"
Doctor smiled at Jamie and moved the wand slightly.
"Yup, and from what I can tell completely normal. Looks like you are about 12 weeks Eddie. Wait a minute. I thought I saw something right over here."
Eddie tensed slightly and Jamie kissed her forehead.
"What's wrong?"
Doctor Carollson smiled as she moved the wand again.
"Well, I say congratulations are in order mom and dad. You're having twins."
Eddie let out a laugh and ran a finger along the screen.
"Twins? Can you tell us if they are boys, girls or one of each yet?"
Doctor Carollson smiled and nodded.
"Would the two of you like to know what you're having?"
Jamie smiled and then smirked.
"Yes."
A smile still spread across her face; Doctor Carollson moved the wand slightly.
"Well, you're in luck mom and dad, this second baby isn't shy. Looks like you're having a girl and a boy. Congratulations. I'll call Doctor Evans in. She's going to be working closely with me now that your pregnant."
Eddie felt her stomach churn. She was nervous again. She wasn't sure how she was going to navigate this. Jamie squeezed Eddie's hand to bring her back to reality.
"Jamie, this might be a bumpy road. I'll have to get off the prednisone. It's part of my anti-rejection meds. It's helping my body accept my kidney."
Jamie kissed Eddie's forehead again and squeezed her hand.
"Doctor Evans will explain the process to us. Take a deep breath and relax."
Eddie nodded and took a deep breath, letting it out slowly.
"I just want everything to be ok. We've gotten this far."
Jamie nodded as Doctor Carollson and Doctor Evans reentered the room. Doctor Evans was the first to speak up.
"Hi Eddie. Jamie. I hear congratulations are in order. Twins. You two are going to have your hands full. But I have no doubt you are up to the challenge. Down to business, shall we?"
Eddie nodded and looked at Doctor Evans.
"How is my being pregnant going to affect all the meds I'm on? I don't want to lose my kidney, and I don't want anything to happen to these babies."
Doctor Evans nodded her head and gave her a sympathetic look.
"I completely understand Eddie. We'll have to adjust two of your anti-rejection meds and take you off the prednisone."
Eddie nodded and shook her head.
"It's because it's a steroid, isn't it?"
Doctor Evans spread her hands and nodded her head yes.
"Yes. The other two meds we have you on will have to be lowered significantly. To the lowest therapeutic levels possible. 4.0. Your body has done well so far without rejecting your kidney. 3% rejection is actually really good. I've seen other pregnant women with kidney transplants. But their rejection rate is a 20 which equals to 70% rejection. You're in a much better position than they are. Doctor Carollson and I will see you through this entire pregnancy. You have our word."
Eddie swallowed and held onto Jamie's hand. He squeezed it and then placed a gentle kiss on top of it.
"See babe? Everything's going to be ok. I promise. We've got a good support team here. Medically speaking and at home."
Eddie was letting it all sink in as Doctor Carollson spoke.
"Do you have any questions, Eddie?"
Looking up, Eddie shook her head.
"I'm ok for now."
Jamie nodded and spoke up.
"Actually Doctor Carollson, I have a question. How long is the morning sickness going to last? She's been miserable every night fort the past several weeks."
Doctor Carollson nodded and gave Jamie a sympathetic look.
"Her having morning sickness is perfectly normal and healthy. It should start subsiding since she's already in her 12th week. If it continues, we'll look into it."
Jamie sighed in relief and shook hands with Doctor Carollson. Doctor Evans added her two cents.
"Make sure she keeps hydrated Jamie. Her anti-rejection meds for her kidney will make her thirsty. Dehydration can land her right here in the hospital. I don't want to see the two of you back here unless its for a check-up. No offense."
Eddie let out a slight laugh.
"Wouldn't dream of its doc. Thank-you. You kind of put to rest some of my worries."
Both doctors looked at Eddie and spoke at the same time.
"Watch your sugar levels."
Eddie nodded.
"Oh yeah. I know. I don't want it to spike into the 400's again. That was awful in the beginning."
Jamie shook hands with both doctors and helped Eddie get dressed.
"See babe. We've got this. There's nothing to worry about. You'll see."
