In the early days of medicine, surgical students would perfect their sewing techniques on tree branches. Because when looking at an exposed bone in an amputation, human instinct is to recoil, not cut. We needed students to get out of the habit of listening to instinct. A lot of our training is breaking instinct, developing new habits. Don't react to bad news in front of patients. Don't show fear when faced with uncertainty. When you're looking at that exposed bone, cut. So the trick is trying to stay human when we've shut down all those gut feelings, all those messy instincts.
Bailey was lying in her bed, she was awakened by a sound, she turend around and saw that Ben was getting changed to go to his work.
"Good morning, Mr. Fireman," Bailey said.
"Good morning, Mrs. Fireman," Ben said.
"Mrs. Fireman?" Bailey chuckled.
"Yeah, well... you're not Chief of Surgery anymore," Ben said. "So what do I call you?"
Ben climbed into bed and he and Bailey started kissing each other
Ben pulled away from Bailey and looked at her; "I miss you."
"But I didn't even get to see you last night," Bailey said. "Why do you have to leave so early?"
"Why do you have work so late?" He asked.
Bailey and Ben started kissing again, but Ben quickly stopped because he had to go to work.
"Come on," Bailey said.
"Sorry," Ben said.
Ben got up and left the room. Bailey got out of bed and was starting to get ready, once she was done she went to her car and drove to the hospital. Bailey arrived at the hospital and headed towards her parking spot, only to see that Alex's car was already parked there, he and Jo got out, Alex waved at Bailey, she waved back and he and his wife entered the hospital. And Bailey went looking for a parking spot.
Alex and Jo walked through the halls of the hospital on their way to the Chief's office, Jo felt like that all eyes were on them.
"Are people looking at us?" Jo asked. "I feel like people are looking at us."
"No one's looking at us," Alex said.
"Okay."
Alex and Jo walked around the corner and they ran into Webber; "Well, looky here," he said. "Congratulations on the fellowship, Wilson. Or is it, uh, Karev?"
"Karev," Jo said as she hold on to Alex' arm. Like the chief.
"Yes, the, uh, new interim chief," Webber said.
"Oh, I, uh, got you a present for your first day," Jo chuckled, she reached into her bag and took a photo frame with in a picture of thier wedding and gave it to Alex
"Wow."
Jo gave Alex a kiss on the check and walked away. Alex and Webber started walking towards the office.
"I mean, this is gonna be weird, but I heard you wanted this job, so...," Alex began
"Yeah, well, I offered experience, wisdom, countless hours in the OR, and not to mention that less tangible quality, which is that I know what the hell I'm doing. But, clearly, Bailey was looking for..."
"For what?" Alex asked.
Webber sighed; "Something else."
Webber walked away. Tom and Link walked down the hallway and went to Alex.
"Uh, this is who you need," Tom said to Link, as he pointed to Alex. "Uh, the new guy was looking for the new chief... understandably, he thought it might be me."
"Link, Ortho," Link said holding out his hand.
"Alex Karev," Alex said, shaking Link's hand "How can I help?"
Link gave Alex a robotic looking arm; "I want to make prosthetics that look like this," he said. "Superheroes. Kids will freak out for them. I can adjust the, uh, skin color, costume. Sky's the limit."
"Wow, it's incredible," Alex said.
"Right? Wave of the future," Link said.
"Not to tell you how to do your job, but I think this is where you, uh, ask him how much money he needs," Tom said.
"Yeah, thanks," Alex said. "Uh, how much?"
"Just less than 500 bucks each," Link said.
"Approved."
"But, uh, we need a better 3D printer, and that's 65 grand."
"Ohh, steep," Tom said, taking the prosthetic arm from Alex.
"Order it. I'll sign," Alex said.
"Sweet! My kind of chief," Link said, he took the arm back from Tom and walked away
"I like it, Karev," Tom said. "Yeah. Firm, decisive, and here I thought Bailey just picked you to make herself look better."
Meredith and Arizona were walking down the hallway and were on their way to the Attending's Lounge.
"What do you have in the bag?" Meredith asked.
Arizona opened the bag and pulled out a bright orange mug, with blue letters, that read, Alex Karev, Best Interim Chief; "I bought this for him."
"How did you get it?" Meredith asked.
"There is this great shop in the mall, the make mugs for evening," Arizona said.
"Really?"
"Really," Arizona said. "I'm going to give this to him now."
Alex walked into the office, he put the picture he had received from Jo on the desk. A knock sounded on the door.
"Come in."
The door opened, a young looking Hispanic man entered the office.
"Can I help you?" Alex asked.
"Are you Dr. Bailey?"
"No, I'm Alex Karev, I'm the Interim Chief," Alex replied. "But I can help you too."
"Nice to meet you, my name is Diego Medina, "I'm a new intern," Diego said.
"New intern?"
"Yes, the hospital where I was working closed and I transferred here," Diego said handing the transfer papers to Alex. "Dr. Bailey arranged everything."
"The papers are legit," Alex said as he looked at the paper work. "I will take you to the interns' locker room and we will arrange some scrubs for you."
"Thank you Chief Karev."
The interns were in the locker room changing clothes.
"We must do our best today, even more than before," Helm said.
"Give it up Helmet, Dr. Grey will never see you that way," Schmitt said.
"I don't mean that," Helm said. "We're second year interns now, we need to show how far we've come, impress the doctors."
"Whose service are you with today?" Qadri asked her fellow interns.
"I'm with Dr. Kepner," Parker said.
"I'm on service with this new doctor," Schmitt said.
"There are three new doctors Schmitt," Parker remind him.
"Dr. Koracick's fellow, I forget his name," Schmitt said.
"Dr. Nolan, he's nice," Qadri said.
And who are you with Qadri?" Schmitt asked.
"Dr. Grey," she answered.
"Lucky you," Helm said.
"And who are you with Helm?" Parker asked.
"Dr. Avery," Helm said.
The door opened, Alex and Diego walked in; "Listen up everyone, this here Diego Medina, your new fellow intern."
"Hello, nice to meet you," Diego said giving a small wave at his classmates
"Now go get changed," Alex said. "And on who's service are you?"
"With a Dr. Webber," Diego said.
Kyle just finished a patient checkup, left the room and put the data in the tablet. Kyle was startled when someone jumped in front of him, he was so startled he almost dropped the tablet from his hands.
"Jesus," he said
"Surprise."
"Tate don't do that," Kyle said, then he realized who was standing in front of him. "Tate?"
"Hi," Tate greeted.
"What are you doing here?" Kyle asked.
"Visiting my big brother," Tate replied.
"How did you get here? You can't just walk into the hospital," Kyle said.
"Seeing as I just did, it was easy," Tate said.
"Tate, I don't have time here, I get to run my own service for the first time today and I want to focus on that," Kyle said.
"Don't worry, I promise I won't get in your way, you know me."
Kyle looked at his brother; "That's exactly why."
"Is that you think about my, I can't believe my big brother thinks about me like that," Tate said.
"I know you," Kyle said
"Hurtful."
"Tate."
"No, no, if you want me to go, that my own brother wants me to go, I'll go," Tate said as he started to walked away in a dramatic way.
"How about lunch later?" Kyle suggested.
"All right, it's a deal," Tate said.
"You're as dramatic as ever, such a waste you didn't go for an acting career."
"Maybe someday," Tate said.
April stood at the ER counter, today was her first day as Head of Trauma, she was nervous that she kept putting her hands in her pockets and then out again, she rolled up the sleeves of her coat and then down again. Parker entered the ER and walked up to April.
"Good morning Dr. Kepner," he said.
"Morning Parker," April said.
"I'm with your service today," Parker said.
Before April could say something to Parker, her phone went off, she saw that her mother was calling her, April didn't answer and put her phone back in her pocket.
"My mother."
"Does she know you have been promoted Parker asked.
"I sent a message about it, I'm sure she wants to congratulate me," April said. "And technically it's not a promotion, "I'm temporarily taking over Dr. Hunt's position."
"And how are you feeling now that you've been given this temporary position, if I may ask?"
"Nervous," April said.
"I'm sure you'll do a great job, Dr. Kepner," Parker said.
"Thank you Dr. Parker, that's nice of you to say that," April said.
The conversation was cut short by the sound of sirens, paramedics brought in a teenage boy, with some blood on his shirt and a nasty looking cut on his head.
"What have we got?" April asked, as she and Parker both put on gloves.
"Table-saw accident in shop class over at Barrow High... sent blocks of wood flying into the students."
"Is Mr. Buckley okay?" The boy asked. "He just kind of fell over in the middle of the demo."
"Yeah, we're gonna find out for you, okay?" April said, trying to comforting the boy and taking al look at his wound.
"No, I got this one," Jo said. "Couple more rigs just landed, and I hear there's worse coming in."
"Okay," April said. "Page Plastic and Peds."
"I'm on it," Jo said.
"Oh and the navy blue scrubs look good on you, Wilson," April said.
"Thanks," Jo said. "And it's Karev now."
April and Parker headed to the ambulance bay, they were joined by Webber and Diego, the ambulance just arrived and the paramedics brought in a older man
"Is this the teacher?" April asked.
"Dave Buckley, partial amputations to the right third and fourth digits, the paramedic explained. Kids said he was trying to guide a student's hand at the table saw when he suddenly lost consciousness."
April walked over to the teacher and looked at the teacher bloody hand; "Page Ortho. They're gonna want him in the OR.," she said. "Webber, you got him?"
"Let's get him inside," Webber said, as he, Diego and the paramedics rolled the teacher inside. "All right. Easy. Easy."
"What is taking them so long? Can we move a little faster, guys?" April said.
April knocked on the ambulance, the door opened and one of the paramedics come out.
"Hey, we didn't want to bump it."
"Bump what?" Parker asked.
April and Parker looked inside the ambulance and saw another teenage boy, but this one had a sawblade in his chest, April went into the ambulance to check up on the boy.
April turned to Parker; "Clear trauma one!"
Parker nodded his head and went inside.
Bailey was in her now former office, talking to Alex.
"You have the new insurance mandates?" She asked.
"Yep, right here," Alex said.
"Uh, and you know the budget meeting was moved to..."
"Wednesday."
"Thursday."
"Thursday, I knew that, uh...," Alex said as he looked for the paper. "Got it. Right here," showing Bailey the piece of paper. "You should start de-stressing."
"Well, then, the baton is passed. I'll leave you to it. Happy first day, Interim Chief," Bailey said.
"Yeah...," Alex sighed. "Are you nervous?"
"No. I mean, the only thing that would make me nervous is if you were nervous," Bailey said. "Are you nervous?"
"No. It's just, um...," Alex began. "You hired me 'cause I'm good, not 'cause you think I make you look good, right?"
"Karev. I have trained you. I have entrusted to you my patients, my doctors, and my staff because I believe in your abilities, and that belief fades a little every time you open your mouth. So, stop, and step up."
Kyle and Schmitt had just finished making the rounds. The two doctors walked into a room where a woman around 50 was lying.
"Schmitt you may present," Kyle said.
"Joana Myers, age 55, came in because of her symptoms, difficulty writing, naming things and hand eye cordienation. CT scan shows it was due to a tumor on the parietal lobe."
"And you're going to remove it, right?" Joana asked.
"That's right Mrs. Myers," Kyle said.
"Dr. Nolan, please call me Joana," Joana insisted.
"Okay, Joana."
"My daughter is getting married soon and I want to be there without this tumor."
"We are going to make sure of that Joana," Kyle said.
"Thank you."
Kyle and Nolan left the room and Tate stood outside on the hallway.
"Tate," Kyle said.
"We were supposed to have lunch together, Tate reminded his brother.
"Tate I'm busy and I have an operation, so we can't have lunch," Kyle said.
"Oh come on," Tate complained.
"When I'm done after surgery we'll have a coffee okay?"
"Okay," Tate said.
"Wait for me in the lobby," Kyle said.
"All right," Tate said.
"Schmitt, I have a few more things to take care of," Kyle said. "You go ahead and prep O.R. 3.
"All right, Doctor," Schmitt said.
Schmitt turned to face Kyle's brother, who was simply smiling and then gave Schmitt a flirtatious wink. Schmitt got so nervous about it that he dropped the tablet from his hands.
"Dr. Schmitt."
Schmitt picked up the tablet from the floor; "Sorry Dr. Nolan."
Meredith was in Alex's office having a coffee with him, he was drinking his from the mug he got from Arizona.
"So your first day as Interim Chief, Are you nervous?"
"Mer, you know me," Alex said.
"That's why I asked?" Meredith said.
"Okay, I'm pretty nervous," Alex admitted.
"Your secret's safe with me," Meredith reassured him.
"Aren't you pissed? Because you wanted this job too?" Alex asked.
"I wanted the job but I'm okay with you getting it," Meredith told him.
"Webber doesn't seem too happy about it, he obviously wanted this job," Alex said.
"A lot of doctors wanted the job," Meredith said. "But that doesn't mean you didn't deserve the job."
"Thank you."
Meredith gave a little nod; You're welcome.
"So are the new doctors any good?" Alex asked.
"I haven't seen much of the new Ortho Head, but apparently he appears to be an Ortho God," Meredith said. "And the new Head of Cardio, Jenna, she's nice and is good."
"She's not your secret sister, is she?" Alex jokingly asked.
"Not this time," Meredith said.
"That's something new," Alex said.
"Yes, it's," Meredith said as she looked at the time. "I have to go now, I have an intern waiting for me."
"Good luck," Alex said.
"You too."
Meredith left the office, she walked toward the OR schedule board, where Qadri was already waiting for her.
"Good morning Dr. Grey," Qadri said.
"Morning Qadri," Meredith said.
"What do we have today?" Qadri asked.
"We have a gastric stim today," Meredith said.
Interesting.
Jenna walked down the hall and went to the OR board; "Meredith."
"Jenna."
"It's Cece," Jenna said, handing over the tablet with Cece's status to Meredith. "She's getting worse."
"This doesn't look good," Meredith said.
"And she's still refusing to get a new heart," Jenna said.
"What do you want me to do?" Meredith asked. "You're cardio. You need to explain to her how important this is."
"I've done all that too," Jenna said. "You've already established some sort of bond with her, I think you're the only one who can convince her."
"I'll try my best," Meredith said.
"Thank you," Jenna said. "I have to go now, I'm being paged by Trauma."
Jenna walked toward the elevator. Meredith looked around her and saw Bailey.
"Dr. Bailey."
Bailey walked up to Meredith; "What is it Grey?"
"I'm needed elsewhere, would you please take over my gastric stim?"
"Fine, I'll do it," Bailey said.
"Thank you."
"Dr. Qadri come with me and we'll get ready," Bailey said.
"Shouldn't I go with you, Dr. Grey?" Qadri asked.
"It's much more useful for you to go with Dr. Bailey and do the gastric stim, Meredith said.
Meredith walked away and headed toward Cece. Qadri followed Bailey.
"Cece," Meredith said entering Cece's room.
"Dr. Grey, did Dr. Wyatt send you to me now?" Cece asked.
"You still refuse a heart?" Meredith asked.
"You still haven't answered my question," Cece said.
"She discussed your situation with me, she's worried and I'm worried too," Meredith said. "Cece you have a chance to live."
"Nisha had a whole life ahead of her and because of my fault it was taken from her, she is dead because of me," Cece said.
"Dr. Avery and the others did their best to save her, they fought for her," Meredith said.
"She wasn't even half my age and she's gone before me, that's not fair," Cece said.
"Cece, I know you feel very guilty about what happened," Meredith said.
"Dr. Grey, I don't deserve a new heart and nothing you can say will convince me," Cece said.
"Really, there is nothing?" Meredith asked.
"Nothing!" Cece said loud and clear.
Meredith got up again and left Cece's room.
Webber walked into the pit. Jo had just finished up her check up on her patient and now Jackson was busy taking a look at his head wound.
"You got 22 bones in your face and skull, and you managed not to break a single one. You're lucky," Arizona said.
"Excuse me, sir? Doctor?" The boy said to Webber and Webber walked over to him.
"Hey, hey, careful there, buddy, lean back down," Jackson said to the boy.
"Is Mr. Buckley awake yet?" Do you know why he collapsed? Was it, like, his heart or s...
"Sorry, we don't yet, son," Webber said. "Um... you know if anyone's called his family?"
"Doesn't have any family in town. His daughter lives in..."
"Maryland. She lives in Maryland," the boy's mother answered. "And I know you have rules, but we're all just really worried about him. He's a great teacher and a friend to my son. So, if you could just keep us posted?"
"Oh, we'll update you when we can," Webber said.
Diego walked over the Webber; "Dr. Webber, you're gonna want to see this," he said, giving Webber the tablet. "The teacher's blood alcohol level. I honestly didn't know it could get that high."
Weber sighed; "Well, I guess we know why he was blind drunk," he said. "He knocked over a kid..."
"Into a table saw," Diego filled in.
"Son of a Bitch," Webber said.
Jenna and DeLuca walked into Trauma 1, April and Parker were busy taking care of the kid.
"Wow."
"Geez."
"Wyatt, take a look, the teeth have penetrated deep into the right chest next to the auxiliary artery," April said. "We placed a chest tube for a hermothorax."
"We're gonna want to do an angio first to make sure nothing got yanked around in there," Jenna said.
"Parker, the parents of the boy and the police want answers, it's going to be chaos out there, "I need you out there and handle the situation.
Parker nodded; "Yes, Dr. Kepner."
Alex walked into the pit, the parents of the boy who got knocked into the table saw walked up to him
"Uh, Doctor, is there any news on our son, Kevin? He's had the table saw..."
A police officer walked over the Alex; "We got a call. We understand the teacher may have been impaired"
"What? Impaired? Like, drunk?" Kevin's dad asked.
"Oh, my God!" Kevin's mom shouted.
"Or high? And he's using power tools?!"
"That's... That's not okay," Kevin's mother, she put her phone back to her ear. "Mom, the teacher was drunk!"
"Is he in surgery already?" The officer asked.
"I need an update on my son!"
"I'm sorry. I was paged on a peds consult. I don't have a lot of information right now," Alex said.
"Then can you just point me to whoever's in charge?"
"That's me," Alex said. "Parker."
"Yes, Chief."
"Get these people out of the ER. Tell them we'll update them as soon as we know anything. I-"I'll see what I can find out," Alex said as he walked away.
"We need this area clear. Please head to the waiting area. Right this way."
"I need an update on my son, Kevin Gailis, Kevin's father said."
"And I will get that for you right away, sir," Parker promised.
Alex walked into Trauma 2, Link was bus with the teacher's hand.
"This the guy? He's drunk?" Alex asked.
"Drunk?" Mr. Buckley asked. "No."
"Well, your blood test says otherwise," Webber said.
"Cops want to talk to him," Alex said.
"Well, it looks like he's gonna lose a few fingers. I need to get him straight up to the OR to salvage what I can," Link said.
"All right. Keep me posted," Alex said. "The police want to talk to him as soon as you're done."
Alex left the room again.
"How?" Mr. Buckley asked, as his voice was beginning to break. "How did this happen?"
"You know how it happened. And you need to take responsibility for your actions," Webber said.
"All right, let's get him up to the OR," Link said.
"You need general anesthesia for this?" Webber asked.
"Um, no, I can just numb his arm with a block," Link said.
"Um... I've been where he's been. I'd like to talk him through that if I can. 'Cause the more sober he gets... the worse it's gonna feel."
Jenna walked into the pit as she just came back from Trauma 1 and found it empty, she saw DeLuca standing and walked over to him.
"DeLuca, where did they go?" She asked.
"Kevin's BP is still borderline. I just updated his parents, and I'm meeting Kepner in the OR," DeLuca said, as he walked over the elevator.
"You mean angio. I told him to get an angio first," Jenna said.
"I don't think so. Kepner said straight to the OR," DeLuca said.
Amelia and Tom in one of the study rooms were busy with their research plan.
"Try a 60 second sonication," Amelia said.
"I did that yesterday while you were off in the OR drilling burr holes, and I was feeling neglected," Tom said.
"Oh. Well, if you want a change of pace, I've got an epidural abscess you can take off my plate," Amelia said.
"Shepherd, I don't work for you," Tom said. "I'm your research partner and your sometimes lover."
"One time. It was one time," Tom, Amelia reminded him
"Yeah, but who knows what the future holds?"
"So, how do you feel, putting your protege in charge of his own service?" Amelia asked.
"I've full trust in Dr. Nolan," Tom said. "I'm more worried about the intern that's put on his service, I've heard things about him"
"Who is the intern?" Amelia asked.
"That intern with the glasses," Tom replied.
"Glasses? His intern is Glasses?"
"Is that his name?" Tom asked.
"No, his name is Schmitt, but we call me Glasses because of…," Amelia said. "That's not important right now."
"Like I said, I trust my Fellow," Tom said.
"Let's continue with the study then," Amelia said.
"Or we can forget all that and become lover again," Tom suggested.
"Ugh," Amelia rolled her eyes and left the room.
"What? Is it something I said? I don't like being alone," Tom said
April, Jenna and DeLuca were in the OR, working on Kevin.
"Okay. Wyatt, you ready for proximal control of the subclavian if we need it? You see any vascular injuries?" April asked.
"It's difficult to say. I needed an angio," Jenna said.
"There was 750 of blood in the chest tube. I made a judgment call," April said.
"You can't just walk of with my patient," Jenna said.
"My patient, this was my call," April said.
Everyone was quiet, the only sounds that could heard was the sound of the monitor and the sound of suctioning.
"Look I'm sorry, I'm new at this, I just wanna do a good job," April said.
"I get that," Jenna said. "This is also very new to me, being Head of a Departement, I'm just trying to find my way."
"Me too."
"Then let's work together and save this boy's life."
"Dr. Kepner, your mother's calling again," said one of the nurses.
"Oh mom," April said irritated. "Send her a message and say I'm in the middle of surgery right now and I'll call her back after."
"I'll do that, Doctor."
"Sorry about that," April said.
"It's okay, Dr. Kepner," Jenna said.
"My mother wants to know everything now that I'm the temporary Head of Trauma," April said. "And knowing my mother, she probably already told everyone in our church."
"That is also something my mother would do, when she heard I had gotten the job as Head of Cardio she told everyone at the bowling alley," Jenna said.
"Dr. Kepner, Dr. Wyatt, the patients arm, it's turning white," DeLuca said. There mustn't be any blood flow.
"This... This is what I was afraid of," Jenna said. "This is why I wanted the angio... "
"There wasn't time for an angio! Let's move fast," April said.
Link had taken Mr. Buckley up to an OR. Webber stood next to the teacher and looked down on him
"This is going to sound worse than it feels," Link said.
"God, I-I hope all the boys pull through," Mr. Buckley said.
"I know you do. I know," Webber said. "What you're feeling right now... the fear, the guilt, hurting the people that you love the most... that's what rock bottom looks like, but only if you admit that you have a problem."
"Kevin, he gets scared of the saws. The sound. "I was trying to help him. I-I slipped. I-It... It was an accident," Mr. Buckley said.
"Look, how long do you want to keep telling that lie? Isn't it exhausting How many more people do you need to hurt!"
"I-I slipped. I-I-I swear," Mr. Buckley said.
"Alcohol does tend to affect one's balance," Webber said.
"Dr. Webber, I think that's enough," Link said.
Alex walked into the OR; "How's it going in here?" He asked. "Cops need a timeline."
"10 to 20 years, I'd say," Webber said.
"Would you give it a rest?" Link said. "Half an hour, Chief. Cut, shave, close."
"What's going on?" Alex said.
"Just trying to offer this man some help is all," Webber said.
"I told you... I don't drink. I-I-I don't drink!"
Mr. Buckley said.
"That boy has a sawblade in his chest. You have to own what you did," Weber said.
"I didn't. I-I-I wouldn't..."
"An innocent boy is fighting for his life," Webber said.
"Webber, I really think I have things under control here...," Link try to tell Webber, but he couldn't hear him.
"The least you can do is tell the truth!" Webber yelled.
"Enough, Dr. Webber!" Alex said.
Webber turned to Alex; "You're gonna lecture me, Karev?" He asked. "I trained you when you didn't know your ass from a scrub room."
"And now I'm your chief, and I want you out of this OR," Alex said.
Alex watched as Webber angerly walked out of the OR.
"Your mentor?" Link asked. "Fun first day."
Later that evening Alex went to the ER again and walked over the Parker.
"How's it going here Parker?"
"Dr. Avery has just finished taking care Arthur Krug, he was one of the shop students and the cops want a time-stamped copy of the teacher's tox screens."
Webber walked down the ER, he passed Alex and didn't say a word to him. Arthur's mother walked up to Webber.
"Excuse me, Doctor, I'm Ava Krug, Arthur's mom. We spoke earlier?" She said.
"Oh, yes, yes, uh, is your son all right?" Webber asked.
"Yeah, he's fine. He's fine," Ms. Krug said. "We're just staying to see how Kevin comes out, so..."
"Well, we promise to give him the best possible care. We've got two of our finest surgeons," Webber said.
"And to check on Mr. Buckley," Ms. Krug said.
"It's terrible what that teacher did. It's just unconscionable," Webber said.
"That's what I wanted to talk to you about. It just doesn't make sense," Ms. Krug said.
"Alcoholics are very good at their job, until they aren't, and until they take responsibility...," Webber began.
"I know. I know drunks. Arthur's dad is one, and my dad was one. I know the signs," Ms. Krug said. "I was at Mr. Buckley's daughter's wedding last year, and he got tipsy off two sips of champagne. He's not a drinker. And he's the only decent guy in Arthur's life. It just doesn't make sense."
Kyle, Schmitt and some other hospital staff were in the OR.
"Okay then we'll add the dye now," Kyle said.
Schmitt gave Kyle fluorescent dye. Kyle injected the dye and the tumor began to light up.
"That looks sick."
"That's not the word I would use, but it looks..." Kyle began, he stopped talking, he looked up and saw his brother standing in the gallery. "Tate?"
"Oh no," Schmitt said.
"That looks so cool," Tate said.
"Tate, what are you doing there?" Kyle asked.
"I wanted to see how my brother works, What is that stuff?"
"It's fluorescent dye and...," Kyle began. "Tate you can't be in here."
"Come on, what you're doing right now is so cool, just let me watch?"
"No, Tate go away please," Kyle said.
"Come on Kyle," Tate said.
"Now go or I'll get security," Kyle said with a strong determination in his voice.
"I'm going," Tate said.
Before leaving the gallery, Tate glimpse at Schmitt with his flirtatious smile.
"Oh God, I feel nervous," Schmitt said.
"You'll be fine Dr. Schmitt, just focus on monitor," Kyle said.
"Yes, Dr. Nolan, Schmitt said.
"Sorry about my little brother, by the way, Kyle said.
"It's okay, Schmitt said.
"I love him very much, but his behavior is just so childish sometimes, Kyle said.
"He likes to make his presence known, Schmitt said.
"Yes and he always wants to be heard, but listening he is terrible at."
"Ah.
"Let's get on with removing this tumor," Kyle said.
Kevin seemed to be doing better, his arm had turned back to normal.
"The distal anastomosis looks good," Jenna said.
"So, let's do a quick back-bleed, and then we can remove the clamps," April said.
"All right, BP is stable 110 over 75, and I got a strong radial and ulnar pulse," DeLuca said.
"He gets to keep his arm," Jenna said.
Webber walked into the room were Mr. Buckley was lying.
"Hey there, Mr. Buckley. How you feeling?" He asked.
"I've... I've been better," Mr. Buckley said. "H-"How are Arthur and Kevin?"
"I'll check," Webber said. "Um, meantime..."
Webber walked over the bedside table, he pulled out a bottle of Vodka from his pocket and poured it into the cup, he pushed the cup towards Mr. Buckley.
"I know what withdrawal feels like."
After the surgery April was sitting in the Attending's Lounge, she grabbed her phone and called her mother.
"Mom, sorry I'm just calling you back now but it was busy," April began, but she was cut off buy her mother's crying. "Mom what is it?" April sat down in the chair with a shocked and sad look on her face. "What?"
Meredith sat in the Attending's Lounge, she was still trying to think of something to convince Cece to take a new heart. Alex entered the room and sat down across from Meredith.
"Why doesn't anyone tell you that, if you take this job, you piss everybody off, and never get to practice medicine?"
"Everyone who ever takes that job tells you that," Meredith said.
"I'm a bad listener," Alex said. "What's bothering you?"
"A patient, it's a long story," Meredith said.
"Tell me," Alex said.
"She feels guilty because of an accident she caused, someone is death," Meredith explained. "She feels so guilty that she refuses to take a new heart, that she really needs."
"That's bad," Alex said.
"I need to convince her to take the heart," Meredith said.
Alex and Meredith both left the lounge. Alex almost bumped into Link, who didn't look happy.
"Buckley is wasted again," he said.
"What? How?" Alex asked.
"I think you need to talk to Dr. Webber," Link said.
April walked down the hallway, she stared toward the floor.
"Dr. Kepner."
April looked up and saw Parker standing in front of her; "What is it Parker?"
"Kevin's parents are asking for an update," Parker replied.
"You give it to them Parker," April said.
"I'll do that, Parker said, he quickly noticed the sad expression on April's face. "Are you all right, Dr. Kepner?"
"I'm...," April began. "If you see Dr. Avery, tell him I'm looking for him."
"Sure," Dr. Kepner, I'll pass on your message, Parker said.
April thanked Parker and moved on, Parker went to give Kevin's parents an update.
Webber was in one of the study rooms, doing some research. Alex and Link walked in.
"You gave alcohol to a patient under investigation by the police for reckless endangerment," Alex said.
"Look, I offered it. He didn't take it," Webber said. "You know how many alcoholics I've met who've passed on a drink?"
"Then why is his blood alcohol through the roof?" Link asked.
"Are you trying to lose your license?" Alex asked with a slight anger in his voice.
"I was testing a theory. After I left his room, I ran some labs, He's got auto-brewery syndrome. It's incredibly rare," Webber said. "His GI tract contains a yeast that ferments any sugar he eats and turns it into alcohol. It was probably the Jell-O."
"I've never heard of that," Alex said.
"Yeah, that sounds made up," Link said.
"Well, maybe that's because I've been around the block a few times more than either of you," Webber said. "Look, I replaced the vodka with water, by the way. I'm not an imbecile."
"Oh, you got lucky," Link said.
"No, I trusted my gut. Now, that's not luck," Webber said.
"Well, next time your gut talks about one of my patients, have it talk to me first," Link said, as he left the room.
"I'm still not apologizing. You acted like an ass," Alex said.
"I was right. That's satisfaction enough," Webber said.
Later that day, Alex was sitting in his office doing paper work, something he noticed he didn't like at all. A knock sounded, Alex looked up and saw April standing in the door opening.
"Kepner perfect timing, you've always been good with paperwork, could you help me with this?" He asked.
"Can I come in?" April asked.
"Have a seat," Alex said, gesturing to the chair.
April came in, she closed the door and sat down.
"What is it?" Alex said.
"My mother has been trying to call me all the time today," April said.
"To congratulate you, of course," Alex guessed
"That's why she didn't call," April said, she looked down at her feet.
"Kepner, what is it?"
April looked up, tears were beginning to fill her eyes; She called because my father died.
"My condolences," Alex said, handing April a tissue. "How did he?"
"He is was working in the field and he had a heart attack and he was alone, no one was there to help him."
"I'm very sorry for your loss Kep... April," Alex said.
"I know I already took a leave of absence and that just started as Head of Trauma, But I have to..."
"I understand April and it's okay, take time off, I'll figure something out."
"Thank you, really thanks you for being so understanding," April said.
April got up again and left the office and she headed to the Attending's Lounge. A few minutes later Jackson entered the Attending's Lounge, he saw April sitting on the couch and sat down next to her.
"You got the message from Parker?"
"Yes, he gave me the message," Jackson said.
"I know it's your weekend with Harriet and Quentin, but could I please have them this weekend?" April asked.
"Sure," Jackson said.
"And I'm sorry if you had plans, but I need the kids," April said.
"April, I know what's going on," Jackson said.
"You do?" She asked.
"I know about your father," Jackson said.
"How do you know?" April asked.
"Alex told me," Jackson said. "April I'm so sorry."
"Thank you for your support," April said.
Jackson put his hand on April's shoulder; "Of course."
"I need to get plane tickets for me and the kids now," April said.
"When is the funeral?" Jackson asked.
"Saturday," she answered.
Jackson put his arm around April, she rested her head on his shoulder, tears began to roll down her cheek.
After the surgery and more rounds Kyle was almost done for the day, he walked toward the lobby, he saw Tate sitting, he was staring ahead and playing with his earring.
Kyle walked over to his brother; "Tate, we need to talk."
"Now do you have time for me?" He asked. "Maybe I don't have time for you now."
"Come on Tate, don't be silly," Kyle said.
"I just came here to visit my favorite big brother," Tate said.
"You only have one," Kyle said.
Why can't you just be glad I'm here?" Tate asked
"Why can't you understand that not everything is about you?" Kyle asked.
"I don't think that," Tate said.
"Tate, you always want to be the center of attention," Kyle said. "Listen, today was a special day for me. I got to run my own service."
"So you were the boss today?" Tate asked.
"Kind of, I wanted to focus on that," Kyle said. "My dramatic little brother coming here, is the opposite effect."
"I'm sorry," Tate said.
"That's okay," Kyle said.
"I'll try to be a little less the attention seeker," Tate said. "I said trying, because that's all I can promise."
"That's something," Kyle said, he then looked down at his watch. "My shift is almost over, shall we have a beer later?"
"Let's go it," Tate said.
"See you in a bit," Kyle said.
Kyle headed toward the locker room to change. Schmitt walked up to the counter, then he saw Tate standing there, giving him a flirtatious look, Schmitt got nervous and quickly walked away.
Meredith walked through the corridors of the hospital and headed toward Cece's room again.
"You're being selfish," she said.
"Excuse me," Cece said.
"You don't want to live anymore and what about all your clients, they count on you and so now you want to tell them that you can't do it anymore because soon you'll be dead and you didn't even fight to stay alive."
"I don't know what to say," Cece said.
"Say you're taking a new heart, fight to live "Cece," Meredith said.
"Dr. Grey, tell me about your love life," Cece said out of nowhere.
"What?"
"I wanna know what's going on with it," Cece said
"Fine, if that's what it takes," Meredith said.
Meredith sat down next to Cece's bed, She took a deep breath.
"14 years ago I met my husband, there were many obstacles in our way, but we overcame it and had each other, then he was taken from me. I dated someone after his death, but it didn't work out. Then I found someone, he made me feel something for the first time, but my sister also liked him, so I decided to go against those feelings. And then we were together and shortly after that the love of his life came back and I let him go. And I've been single ever since."
"Do you want a new love in your life?" Cece asked.
"I do, Meredith said. But he will never…"
"Be your true love, nothing like," Cece began. "What was your husband's name?"
"Derek."
"He'll never be your Derek," Cece filled in
"And I don't want that either, I just want someone who... I don't really know," Meredith said.
"Listen Dr. Grey, of course there will always be your soul mate and you had yours in Derek, but just because your soul mate is gone doesn't mean the love is gone, you've been allowed to live even if you think you can't do it without your soul mate."
"What about you? Are you allowed to live?" Meredith asked.
"Do you think I'm allowed?" Cece asked.
"I know you feel very guilty about what happened to Nisha, but you got to live, too, and you got a chance," Meredith said.
"Okay."
"Okay?"
"I want to live. I'm going for the heart," Cece said.
"Good," Meredith said.
"And in the meantime I'm going to help you," Cece said.
"Help me?" Meredith asked.
"I have to wait for the heart anyway, and to make sure I don't get bored," Cece said. "I'm going to help you, help you find someone."
"Cece," A slight embarrassed Meredith chuckled.
"Dr. Grey."
"So you are offering me to be my matchmaker?" Meredith asked.
"You tell me what you're looking for and I'll help you find a man, deal?"
"It's a deal," Meredith agreed.
"Just tell me, child , what you're looking for in a man?" Cece asked.
"I'll have to think about that, Meredith said.
"Take your time," Cece said.
"Okay."
"Let's start with yourself first," Cece said. "Do you have a pen and paper?"
Meredith handed Cece a notepad and a pen, and Meredith began to give Cece information about herself.
April had finished her shift, she was at the daycare to pick up her children, Jackson walked up to her.
"How about I give you and the kids a ride home?"
"Jackson that's not necessary," April said.
"Have you booked the tickets yet?" He asked.
"I haven't been able to find a direct flight, so I have to hop planes," April said.
"That won't be necessary, I'll arrange for you to use the family jet," Jackson said. "And I'll go with you."
"Jackson."
"Let me do this April, I'm also doing it for Quentin and Harriet, they lost their grandfather now, I want to be there for them and you."
"Okay," April said. "Thank you."
Jackson gave April a sweet smile; "No problem."
They day was almost over, Alex walked into the pit to see how everything was going.
"Everything going well here?" He asked.
"Everything is great," Arizona said.
"Good to hear," Alex said.
"My Fellow did a good job, but I still haven't met her," Link said.
"Now's your chance," Alex said, he saw that Jo was heading their way.
"Brooke," Link said.
"Link," Jo said.
Jo walked up to Link and the two hugged each other.
"Apparently, the two know each other," Arizona said.
"Apparently," Alex said.
Alex watched quite jealously as Jo and Link were talking and laughing together.
Next time: Alex tries to find out what the history is between Jo and Link. Bailey is still having trouble leaving her position as Chief to Alex. Jackson worried how April will react when he has to tell her something.
