Chapter 3

(With Hiccup)

Walking through the cool morning air, Hiccup was thinking about what his father said the night before. 'Why does everybody hate me so much? I never did anything to them, did I?' Suddenly his eyes grew wide as he realizes "Because dad treats me that way, they all treat me that way..." he said to himself. Looking around he notices that the villages is mostly empty, probably because most of them are on the nest hunt. Remembering that he had to be at dragon training he starts walking again towards the arena.

Arriving there he saw that all the other teens were already there. Looking for his mentor he sees him opening the gate of the arena. "Welcome to dragon training!" Gobber announces happily.

"No turning back." Astrid comments. The teens walk in and start looking around like gladiators entering the coloseum. All of them had an awe struck face except Astrid who looked more determined.

Hiccup listens as Ruffnut and Tuffnut were talking about getting some burns or some mauling. Rolling his eyes he thought 'Maybe that will shut you up and stop assaulting me.' Astrids next words brought him back to midgard "Yeah it's only fun if you get a scar out of it." Hiccup deciding to comment it (altough not his best decision) made them turn around "Yeah no kidding right? Pain. Love it." he says sarcastically. Everyone groans as they see him.

"What's he doing here? Looking for a way to kill himself?" Sontlout asks drawing laughter from all around him except Gobber.

"Is that even fair? He brought down a Nightfury. So why is he here?" Tuffnut aks earning even more snickering from the others.

"Doesn't matter why he's here. He'll be out of training after the first round. Or maybe he's dead after today." Astrid told them while glaring at Hiccup.

Hiccup is fighting the urge to say something sarcastic or to give them a piece of his mind but before he could even open his mouth Gobber decides to do it for him.

"He's here on the chiefs order and if I see any of you trying to get him killed you will be going up against me! Am. I. Clear?" He tells them. All of them shut up pretty quickly after hearing that from him because they all know that even though he's missing an arm and a leg, Gobber is the second best warrior in berk. Stoick ofcourse is better than him but not by much.

Gobber procceds with pushing Hiccup towards the line of teens and starts telling them what kind of dragon is in each of the cages from the arena. While he does that, Fishlegs rambles random statistics about each dragon until Gobber had enough "Will you STOP that?!". With that said he puts his hand on the lever of the first cage. "And the Gronckle."

Panicking Snotlout asks "Wait?! Aren't you gonna teach us first?!" The only reply he got was "I believe in learning on the job." just before he released the dragon. The teens scramble out of the way while the Gronckle crashes into the ring wall and eats a few rocks that are lying on the floor.

The entire lesson the recruits are running around and after a few helpful tips from Gobber the teens can hold themself for a few minutes. The first ones out were the twins. They got blasted while fighting over a shield. Next was Fishlegs. He wasn't paying attention because he was proud of himself to have answered correctly to one of Gobbers questions. After that it was Snotlout. He was to busy flirting with Astrid so he didn't see the blast coming at him.

Astrid rolls infront of Hiccup and stands up. "So it's just you and me then, huh?" he asks trying to be nice wich failed. "Shut up you're just lucky!" she snaps at him before rolling to the side and out of the way from the dragons blast. Unfortunately Hiccup didn't saw it coming, because Astrid was infront of him, got his shield blasted out of his hands. Doing the only thing logical he starts running after the shield 'Why didn't Gobber call me out?! He doesn't want me to die, does he?!' Hiccup trips and ends up being trapped between the dragon and a wall starring into the mouth of the Gronckle. As he sees the Gronckle prepairing a blast that will send him off to Valhalla he closes his eyes and looks to the side. He feels the heat from the blast next to his head and looks back up seeing that Gobber grabbed the dragon by it's mouth and pulls it away from him.

"And that's six! Go back to bed, you overgrown sausage!" with that he flings it back into the cage before closing it.

"Remember! A dragon will always... ALWAYS, go for the kill." he tells the recruits with the last part directet towards Hiccup who was still lying on the ground. The teens all look at the scrawny viking on the floor as if deciding wether or not they should beat him up because he was one of the last still standing. Eventually they decided that he was just lucky and wlak out of the kill ring.

(In the forest)

Hiccup is back at the place where he found the Nightfury. Picking up a bola he asks himself "So why didn't you?". Dropping it he stands back up and walks towards where he saw the dragon flying off. walking through a opening between two stonewalls he discovers a beautifull cove. The cove was surrounded by high stonewalls and had a small pond in the middle. A waterfall was going down over one of the edges directly into the pond. Walking more forward he spotts something small on the ground. As he picks it up he sees that it's a black and shiny scale and runns a finger over the smooth surface of the scale.

He suddenly jumps back as a black blurr shot up directly infront of him. Looking over he sees that it's the Nightfury trying to claw it's way back out. After the dragon dropped down to the ground it tries again only for it to fall back down again. Deciding quickly, Hiccup pulls out his notebook and starts to sketch the outline of the dragon.

"Why don't you just fly away?" he wonders. In that moment he notices that it's missing its left tailfin. Immediately guilt starts to flow through him. Watching the Nightfury ladning at the pond he sees the dragon struggling to catch food. And more guilt filled him. 'I'm responsible for it to starve...' he thinks with sorrow. While thinking about what he had done he doesn't notice his pencil slipping out of his hands.

The dragons ear flaps shot up when it hears something fall down into its prison. looking up it notices the boy who had freed it sitting on top of a stone pillar.

When they both looked at each other they saw a few different things in each others eyes. Hiccup saw saddness, hate and hopelessness. The dragon saw guilt, pain and suffering. But what they both saw was loneliness and the longing to have a friend.

Dragon and viking kept looking at each other until a thunder ripples through the air and jolts them back to reality. Hiccup decides to turn around and head back while the dragon seekes cover in a small cave.

(In the great hall)

Hiccup opens the doors of the great hall and walks in soaking wet because it started to rain outside. Walking to the table where the food was placed he picks up a small plate with a small portion to eat. After all he doesn't need much to eat.

"Hiccup get over here!" Gobber calls out to him. Looking over he sees him standing at a table with the other recruits. Sighing he walks over and sits down at the table opposite to the teens. He knew very well that the others would beat him up if he tried to sit with them because the first time he tried to did not end well. Driffting off into his own thoughts he blends out the others talking about what they did wrong. Even when Gobber asked them what he did wrong he ignored the insult coming his way.

Gobber drops a book on the table "The Dragon Manual. Everything we know about every dragon we know off." Looking outside their trainer tells them "No attacks tonight. Study up." With that he leaves the teens alone and goes home.

In the corner of his eye, Hiccup saw them standing up and leaving the great hall. After he ate his meal he was the only one left in the hall so he decides to look through it. He flicks through the book searching for one specific dragon. On the last page he finds what he's been looking for. "Nightfury. Speed unknown. Size unkown. The unholy offspring of lightning and death itself. Never engage this dragon. Your only chance, hide and pray it does not find you." he reads to himself. Thinking about it a moment he pulls out his notebook with the sketch of the Nighfury and throws it on to the blank page. 'Twice the dragon didn't kill me. Twice.' With that he heads back home to get some sleep.

(The next morning in the ring)

The recruits were currently running through a mace that was put up in the arena and are trying to evade the released Nadder. Hiccup was thinking about something completely different and is asking Gobber about Nightfuries. That is until Astrid harshly whispered behind him "HICCUP!". Looking behind him he saw Astrid and Snotlout ducked on the corner of a wall gesturing for him to get down too. Not wanting to get a beating he follows their lead and joins them. After the blonde looked around the corner she rolled through the gape between the walls followed closely behind by Sontlout. Hiccup tries to do the same but the weight of the shield stopped him halfway through and he flopped to the ground getting the Nadders attention. Springing up he runs away and chose not to follow Astrid or Sontlout and instead goes the other way. When he got away he heard Snotlout triying to show off to Astrid but failing wich caused the Nadder to laugh at him. Few seconds later he hears a crashing sound and his name being shouted from above him. looking up he saw Astrid falling towards him followed by a Nadder.

As these two crashed, the girls axe got stuck in his shield. Trying to yank her weapon free didn't work so she put her boot on his face and pushes down. In the last second she got the shield of his arm and smashed it at the dragons head making it stop and tumble to the side. While Gobber puts the dragon in the cage Astrid turns towards the boy.

"Is this some kind of a joke to you?! Our parents war is about to become ours. Stop being useless and learn something or leave the island!" The surrounding teens agreed with her immediately and since Gobeer was to far away he didn't hear that. As the teens stormed out of the arena Sontlout shot him a look that told him 'You will regret upsetting her:'.

After this experience he decides to pay a certain someone a visit and try to find out if they were completely wrong about dragons.

So I hope you enjoyed this Chapter, I literally got a cramp in my hand writing this xD. but hey, it was worth it I got it finished. Until the next time!
