Twelve Heroes Chapter I
A Naruto/My Hero Academia crossover
Summary: There was a tradition at the Provisional Hero License Exam. Every year, without fail, all the other schools would target U.A. high school first, completely crushing them. This year, U.A. sent their first years, so they really stood no chance. Fortunately for the young heroes, this year they would have help.
Ever since he knew what the word 'hero' meant, Izuku Midoriya wanted to be one. Inspired by the debut video of the recently-retired No. 1 Pro Hero and the World's symbol of Peace All Might, Izuku's heart steadfastly chose his future and held onto it with a stubborn belief.
Unfortunately, the only thing strong about him was his heart.
In the world of super-powered individuals, a place where only 20% of the total population was without a power to call their own – a number that was shrinking with every generation, at that – Izuku had known from a very young age that his dream was impossible. He was quirkless.
That all changed when he met his idol face-to-face.
Learning that there was a quirk that could be transferred to another holder shifted a few of Izuku's paradigms, but the mental effort it took to accept it, along with the physical effort it took to earn it, was nothing when compared to actually attempting to master it. The young hero student was just glad that the quirk didn't break him anymore, as were his friends and family, even though he could only get away with using maybe 5% of its total power. On a good day, he could probably go as high as 8%!
And so Izuku Midoriya, seat 18 of class 1-A of the venerated U.A. high school stood, along with his classmates, clutching his costume case and watching with bemusement as his ever-stoic Homeroom teacher rejected the third proposal of marriage in a row from Ms. Joke, the Smile Hero. They were as ready to face the Provisional Hero License Exam as a group of first-years could ever be.
"You know they're gonna get crushed." A black-haired teen stood leaning on one of the busses the students from all over Japan used to arrive to the testing site.
"Of course, I know. It happens every year without fail. 'The U.A. Crush', they call it." A teen with spiky blond hair stood next to the other one, hands clasped behind his head as he casually watched the first-year students begin to walk into the examinee area. A wide grin slowly formed on his face.
"Oh, no." The third teen, a girl with pink hair, scowled and crossed her arms. "This will be bad."
"Ah, come on, Sakura, you're exaggerating." The blond fired back.
"No. I know that grin, I don't trust that grin! It always spells trouble for us. Sasuke will agree."
"Hn." The black-haired boy grunted. "Keep me out of this."
"Sakura… think about it. They're a whole year younger than any of us, which is a whole year less to train and grow, as both a person and a hero. And they're starting with a huge disadvantage. Even if they've trained hard since their Sports Festival, most of the other examinees will already have an idea of what their quirks are and how they function. And, sometimes, that's all you need stacked against you to lose everything. Not to mention, they've already been through a lot in their one semester."
"Naruto…" Sakura sighed. "Are you sure about this?"
"I want to help the kids, even if it technically goes against our self-interest. Don't you?" They stared at each other for a moment before Sakura's shoulders slumped in defeat.
"I'll go get the others." She muttered, walking away.
"Awesome." The two boys watched her go before Sasuke turned to Naruto. "O see the manipulation lessons with your father have been paying off."
"Let's just hope Sakura doesn't realize that. There's no guarantee either of us would survive it."
"Right." Sasuke shuddered as the rest of their schoolmates approached them. He ignored Sakura'\s questioning look. "So, what's the plan, then, oh fearless leader?" Naruto's grin sharpened, and he let out a low chuckle. All of his friends steeled themselves for the trouble ahead.
Shota Aizawa, Pro Hero Eraserhead and Homeroom teacher of U.A. Hero Course class 1-A, was rethinking each of his life choices that led him to his current predicament, starting from deciding to get born all the way to deciding to continue breathing. The sole cause of his existential dilemma (at least the sole cause of the current one) just grinned at him, her green eyes sparkling.
"Come on, let's get married!"
"I'd rather swallow razorblades." He deadpanned in return, earning another annoying bout of laughter.
"Looks like we made it just in time." A voice called from the entrance. "See, I told you we would."
"Just barely, Kakashi."
Five people walked up to the two seated Pros. Two of the men were dressed similarly, in a forest-green uniform of some kind, with a tactical vest over it. The other three were varied, but they all had a headband tied to their foreheads.
"Kakashi Hatake." Shota managed to hide his surprise well enough.
"Shota Aizawa." The man leading the small group answered back, headband slanted over one eye, mask covering the lover part of his face, and nose buried in an orange book.
"Hey, hey, Eraser, who are they?" Ms. Joke tapped him on the back. "Are they friends of yours? Is she your wife?" She motioned to the sole female of the group, dressed in a red-and-white bandage dress, who just pointed to herself, confused.
"I don't have any friends. And she's not my wife."
"Then good, we can get married right now. Can any of you officiate?"
"I'd rather count grains of rice in a sake distillery."
"Oh, you're hilarious." Joke just laughed again, irritating him even more.
"Hm, a male kuudere type? I've never thought of that before." The man at the back of the group, oldest and tallest, dressed in a kabuki dancer's getup with a long mane of white hair rubbed his chin in thought.
"Alright, enough, I'll let them introduce themselves. But I will say I never expected the Konoha Hero Academy to attend one of these exams."
"Whoa, they're from that secretive place? I heard even Edgeshot doesn't know where it is, and he's, like, the go-to ninja guy for stuff like that."
"I'll go first, then." The silver haired man from before spoke up. "Name's Kakashi Hatake, teacher in charge of Team 7, though they've had other mentors in the meantime."
KAKASHI HATAKE
HERO NAME: THE ELEMENTAL HERO, SCARECROW
HIS QUIRK: ELEMENTAL CHAKRA NATURES
The quirk gives him control of an inner energy called chakra, which he can use to enhance his body, or attack and defend by using any of the five basic elements.
"And my name is Kurenai Yūhi, the teacher of Team 8. A pleasure." The woman gave a small bow.
KURENAI YŪHI
HERO NAME: THE ILLUSIONARY HERO, ILLUSION QUEEN
HER QUIRK: ILLUSION
Using her quirk, she can focus all her willpower to create illusions around a target person or area that are so life-like, that sometimes they might as well be real.
"Yosh! I am Might Guy (no relation to All Might), and I am the youthful teacher instructed to bring out the Springtime of Youth of my very own students, Team 9!" A man with a bow cut dressed in a green leotard, orange leg warmers and a tactical vest shouted.
MIGHT GUY
HERO NAME: THE NOBLE GREEN BEAST
HIS QUIRK: THE SPRINGTIME OF YOUTH
His quirk enhances his body, giving him more strength, speed and endurance, along with the ability to call of even more, if the situation really calls for it.
"I'm Asuma Sarutobi, teacher of Team 10, hey." The man had a full beard on his face and a lit cigarette placed in his mouth, drawing the ire of his fellow teacher, Kurenai. He was dressed similarly to Kakashi, but had a white sash with a red kanji for 'fire' attached to his belt.
ASUMA SARUTOBI
HERO NAME: THE SMOKING HERO, VOLCANO
HIS QUIRK: SMOKE MANIPULATION
With his quirk, he can generate and manipulate smoke around him. He is able to turn the smoke flammable if he wants to, but only before it leaves his body.
"I guess that leaves just me." The white-haired man got into a pose. "Listen up! Allow me to reveal my identity. From the North to the South, and the East to the West, not even the spirits can defeat this Sage! The white maned toad charmer. A red-hot hero who strikes fear into the hearts of men! I am Jiraiya!" Smoke enveloped the man, only to clear a moment later, showing him standing on a gigantic orange toad. The whole scene looked like something that would happen in a kabuki theater. Shota just stared at the man in complete, judging silence, while Ms. Joke laughed and clapped at the show.
"Well, at least someone likes my introduction. And such a gorgeous woman at that. I'm very proud."
JIRAIYA (LAST NAME UNKNOWN)
HERO NAME: THE GALLANT JIRAIYA
JIRAIYA OF THE SANNIN
THE TOAD SAGE
HIS QUIRK: TOAD SAGE
This quirk gives him the ability to summon and draw power from an array of mythical toad creatures. His quirk is versatile and powerful, but he spends most of his time perving at hot springs and writing porn books.
"And why are you here?" Shota asked, his tone conveying just how utterly done he was with everything for the week (and it was only Tuesday).
"Right, I'm training the brat." The man grinned at the two of them, earning a confused look and a raised eyebrow. "Trust me, you'll know him when you see him."
"We need to stick together!" Izuku yelled as the exam started, but by then Kirishima, Kaminari and Bakugo had already split off to go one way, and Todoroki another. "Or we'll be crushed."
But there's a saying about plans and enemies for a reason, and a quick earthquake – courtesy of a quirk one of the Ketsubutsu students had – was all it took to scatter the rest of class 1-A. Izuku jumped in an effort to avoid the rock that were flying all around, and managed to find himself alone.
Momo Yaoyorozu, Kyouka Jirou, Mezou Shouji and Tsuyu Asui were in trouble.
The start of the first part of the exam was fine enough. They'd managed to weather the first volley of attacks. As Midoriya had predicted, the other schools attacked them almost instantly, but had been clearly working on outdated information, if their comments to her green-haired classmate were any indication.
But the class had been separated, and her group took cover in one of the unoccupied buildings. Where they had walked right into a trap. Momo didn't know who they were up against, but their hidden enemy easily managed to keep at least three steps ahead at all times, and now their exits were sealed, Jirou was injured, Asui was brought down to hibernation by the low temperatures, and she was almost at her wits end. "I can make clay to seal the vents." But the enemy would've thought of that, surely. They must've known all their quirks. Was that what hey were waiting For? What would Todoroki do? What would Midoriya? Steeling her resolve at the thought of her classmate's drive, she made four headphones sets and started flipping through her book. "I've never made it before, but I know the basic composition."
"But what about the vents?" Jirou asked, shivering.
"I believe their purpose is not just to bring down Asui, but to make me exhaust my supply of lipids as well." If the frog girl was awake, she would've protested at the name, but Momo paid little mind to that at the moment. "I think this is our only shot for success." She knelt down in front of her group and loosened the top of her costume, bringing it down.
"Hey, watch it!" Jirou jumped up to hide her from Shouji's gaze, who had already turned his head away.
Before they could do much with the gigantic speaker Momo created, the emergency exit, which their captors had sealed a while earlier, exploded into the room, blown off its hinges. Three female figures dressed in white uniforms were thrown into the room, unconscious and with all three of their targets lit up. Three more students walked in after them, two boys and a girl.
"You kids alright?" The girl asked them. She was dressed in a white Chinese-style shirt and red pants, her brown hair tied in two buns on the top of her head.
"Stay back!" Momo gasped, with barely enough energy to move. "Don't come any closer."
"Relax." One of the boys held his hands up in surrender. He had long brown hair tied in a low ponytail, was dressed in brown pants and a loose white shirt, with a headband tied to his forehead. "You're U.A. class 1-A, right? We were sent here to help."
"How can we believe that?" Shouji asked from the back, still keeping Asui tightly wrapped in the blanket Momo had created earlier.
"Don't, then. It makes little difference to us. The name's Neji Hyūga, and these are my teammates, Tenten Higurashi and Rock Lee." He turned to the other boy, who was dressed in a lime-green jumpsuit with orange leg warmers, his hands wrapped in bandages. His headband was tied to serve as his belt. "Can you do something about those windows, Lee?"
"Yosh!" the boy sent him a thumbs up before moving to one of the windows, which had large metallic shutters over them. "Alright, here we go! First Gate, Second Gate – Open!"
"Wait, there's a sniper on-"
"YOUTH!" With a loud yell Lee punched the window, sending the metal covering it flying away instantly.
The U.A. students stood gaping.
ROCK LEE
HERO NAME: THE BEAUTIFUL GREEN BEAST
QUIRK NAME: EIGHT INNER GATES
His quirk gives him eight points in his body which he can access, in numerical order, to increase his strength, speed and endurance, each with an increasingly harsh backlash.
Immediately, a whistling sound was heard, and Lee, still under the effects of his quirk, managed to dodge a rock, which would've hit him square in the temple.
"My youthful friends, there seems to be a sniper on the opposite building."
"We've noticed, Lee." Neji deadpanned at his friend. "Give me a moment." He brought his hands in front of him, clasping his fingers together in a strange pattern. "Byakugan!"
NEJI HYŪGA
HERO NAME: THE FAR-SEEING HERO, KINGFISHER
HIS QUIRK: BYAKUGAN
As a member of the Hyūga family, Neji's quirk manifests as special eyes which allow him to see through anything, as well as up to a kilometer away from his position.
"There's only one target on the roof of the building directly opposite, as well as twelve more in the other room. Tenten, take her down."
"I'm on it." Tenten cracked her neck and moved in front of the window, dodging another rock, before she stared down her target. "Locked and loaded." She brought up three of the balls all examinees were given, holding them in one hand.
"But what if she misses?" Jirou asked out loud.
"Tenten doesn't miss." Neji answered simply.
"Volley Shot!" Tenten threw all three balls at the same time with great speed, each one hitting its target dead on.
TENTEN HIGURASHI
HERO NAME: THE PRECISE HERO, TRUESHOT
HER QUIRK: PINPOINT ACCURACY
Her quirk allows her to instantly calculate the required speed and angle required to hit anything she wants up to 500 meters away from her, with anything she throws.
"Target down." The bun-haired girl called back. "I passed the exam."
"Great job. Lee, the door, please."
"Wait, before you do that." Momo spoke up weakly, making a snap decision. "We can probably help disable most of our enemies, since there's plenty to go around. I just have to make three more headphones.
"Man, this is such a drag." Shikamaru sighed, watching the chaos in front of him from his vantage point, high on a nearby cliff. He was dressed in a pair of black pants and a black long-sleeved shirt with a forest-green vest over it. "Why'd Naruto have to order us to help the kids out?"
"Because it's a nice thing to do, and he's a nice person, Shikamaru." His female teammate answered with a steely voice.
"Ah, come on, Shika, it's probably be pretty unsportsmanlike to ambush them, all things considered." Chōji chimed in, opening a bag of barbecue-flavored chips. He had a red overcoat on with samurai armor plating on it. "Naruto's right about that. It'd feel really lousy. And Ino, you know he's only fishing for something to complain about. We both know he'd always follow Naruto's orders."
Shikamaru gave his rotund friend a half-hearted glare, before snatching the bag from his hands. "Just for that, I'll be taking this.
"But… but…" Chōji lost his voice as he watched Shikamaru slowly take one chip out of the bag and eat it. "But that was the last one…" Shikamaru turned his back on him and jumped down from their perch.
"Boys." Ino shook her head with e resigned sigh. She flicked her blonde ponytail back over her head, brushed some imaginary dust from her purple top and skirt, before jumping down after her teammate. "Come on, Chōji, let's go."
"THAT WAS THE LAST ONE! SHIKAMARU!" Chōji yelled out enraged, and jumped after the black-haired teen. "Partial Expansion: WRECKING BALL!" Parts of his body puffed up and he curled into himself, forming a ball. He landed on top of a group of enemies, scattering them.
CHŌJI AKIMICHI
HERO NAME: THE EXPANDING HERO, MONARCH
HIS QUIRK: PARTIAL EXPANSION
Chōji's quirk allows him to expand parts of his body, or the whole thing, increasing the size and strength of the corresponding parts. Doing this uses up his fat stores, so he's always eating.
"Great, you did that on purpose, didn't you?" Ino shot her friend a glare, earning a smirk back from Shikamaru. "Now he'll never calm down."
"Chōji will be fine. We're doing the right thing, after all." Shikamaru's shadow spread out away from him, merging with the shadow of one of their temporary enemies. "Shadow Sewing complete."
SHIKAMARU NARA
HERO NAME: THE TACTICAL HERO, SHADOWMAN
HIS QUIRK: SHADOW SEWING
Shikamaru's quirk allows him to direct his shadow and force whoever's shadow it touches to mirror his every move. He can also use his shadow to manipulate objects, though it isn't very strong.
"Right, because you planned it exactly like that. Jerk." She turned to the enemy Shikamaru captured, bringing her hands in an upward triangle. "Takeover!" For a moment nothing happened, and the captured student let out a sigh of relief, before he stopped resisting completely, with a vacant expression on his face. Shikamaru's shadow disconnected, and the student lunged at his classmates, taking out one of them with the red balls before the other teen knew what hit him.
INO YAMANAKA
HERO NAME: THE TAKEOVER HERO, ORCHIDEA
HER QUIRK: TAKEOVER
Her quirk allows her to send her mind out of her body and take over anyone it touches. If it misses, however, it takes a couple of minutes for it to return, while her body remains vacant and motionless.
"You think they'll count that one for me or for him?" Ino's voice called out from the captured student.
"I'm sure they'll take it into consideration. Come on, let's finish this up quickly and reunite the two groups."
Behind a nearby rock, Aoyama Yuga and Tenya Ida looked on in confusion.
I'm not too happy with the names, but they'll have to do for now. If I think of something better, I might change them later on.
