Chapter one
Andy was in the locker room getting changed when Maya walked in. "You're here?"
"Need to work. Actually tempted to set a fire for us to fight." Andy said and walked away. Soon after Sullivan walked into the locker room.
"You approved of this?" Maya asked Sullivan.
"She said she needs to be around her people," Sullivan said, walking through the locker room
"She buried her best friend yesterday," Maya said, shocked Sullivan would let her come back.
Sullivan turns to face Maya, "Maya, just stop. She said she needs to work and needs to be around her people. Vic came back right after Ripley's funeral so why are you making this such a big deal?"
Maya didn't know what to say so after a few seconds of silence Sullivan walked away. Sullivan saw Andy at the Aid car. He looked at her and thought back to Maya saying that she brings her personal life to the job but then thinks about what Andy said. How she's been around this station since she was 7. She's 29 now so that's over two decades.
He goes to his office and looks at their records and their academy grades. Finds it funny when he realizes Herrera had finished top of her class while Maya came second. So much for never losing Sullivan thought. And then the thought back to what Dixon said. "I hope it's one of those girls you have.". He knows that Andy has earned the captain position. Ripley was going to make her captain before she messed up at the Skyscraper fire but he's also watched her and sees that she's been following all the rules, he hasn't really needed to discipline her. Thought back to how even after they kissed and almost had sex and her sending her away when his leg went numb hat her firefighting concentration was perfect, didn't get distracted by anything. Then Sullivan thought to Maya. How while Herrera was running around the building on a call, finding the kids, Maya was just standing by a hydrant the whole time, not doing anything to help. Herrera was an action first, think later firefighter, but she did follow orders from Sullivan, she respected him. Herrera became lieutenant before Maya, Maya didn't even want to go out for a leadership role until Ripley told her she should."
While he was thinking this over Maya and Jack were arguing about her in the beanery. Maya walked to the sink and Jack happened to be there too.
"I don't get how you do it," Jack said.
"How I do what, exactly?" Maya asked back, annoyed.
"How you treat your friends like chess pieces, moving us around so you can win," Jack said, briefly looking at Maya.
Maya turned to Jack "You're mean when you're brokenhearted."
"You sent Andy out there, hoping she would fail. You played on her grief." Jack looked at Maya again, not believing how she was treating her.
"Andy is a grown woman. She makes her own choices." Maya said angrily and then walked away.
Once Maya walks away Travis started to talk "I mean, I'm with Sullivan. I don't understand how Andy's functioning right now." Travis said.
Meanwhile on Andy's call
Andy and Vasquez were loading their patient into the ambulance and when she was about to close the doors she saw that there was smoke coming from a manhole.
"Vasquez, tell dispatch we need a truck and engine response to this location now., Andy said, determination on her face.
"For a CO leak?" Vasquez asked, like Andy is crazy.
"No, for smoke coming out of a manhole," Andy said, going away from the ambulance to tell people to clear the area. "Everyone needs to clear this area, right now."
While Andy was trying to clear the crowd Vasquez was on the radio "Sewer explosions, CO leak. Power lines must be corroding. Every breaker panel on this black could short out. We got to clear out, Herrera." While Rigo was trying to get her attention Andy kept on trying to clear the area.
"Don't panic, just keep moving. We need to evacuate the street." Andy said
Rigo, annoyed, "We have a patient. That means we go!"
"Shauna is stable, and we're standing on a powder keg. We save more lives by clearing this area now." Andy said over the radio.
In the ambulance, the patient's dad was going out of the ambulance and wanted to go back in the store for his daughters' purse when Rigo saw he called out "Herrera!"
"I got him," Herrera said rushing over but she was too late because one of the manholes exploded and Shauna's dad got hit by the blast.
Back at the station
Sullivan was walking through the halls and saw Pruitt in the lounge.
"Captain Herrera," Sullivan didn't know what to say, he wasn't expecting to see him there. "I"m so sorry for your loss. It's- It's unthinkable." Pruitt is just looking at the board with pictures, looking at the one of Andy holding a hose with him and Ryan next to her, a turnout coat draped over her. "It was Andy's decision to be on duty today. I- I gave her an order not to go out, and she-"
Pruitt cuts him off "Ah, you couldn't have stopped her with an army. I know my daughter. That's her" Pruitt pointed to the picture "That's her. That's Andy right here." chuckles, pointing to the picture again, "And that's Ryan. Seven years old, maybe eight. He was a good kid. Had a rough start. His father wasn't a good role model, so I tried to step in. When they were younger, I'd bring him here with Andrea. God, they were inseparable. Then later when he got older, she'd try to sneak him into her bedroom, and, uh.." he chuckles again "that never went over very well." continues chuckling.
At Andy's call
Andy is back at the ambulance, a crowd has gathered around "Alright folks, stop you gawking and vacate the area.
Rigo, meanwhile, was working on Martin. "Martin, can you hear me? I need you to stay awake. Martin."
Andy spoke into her radio "This is Aird Car 10 to Grey Sloan Memorial. We got a 50-year-old male with severe blunt trauma to the chest. "
"Tell me he's gonna be okay," Shauna said, looking up at Andy and Rigo.
"Okay, I got GCS 12. Multiple rib fractures with flail chest." Rigo said
"Dad, please! Come on." Shauna pleaded.
"Getting into the 80's" Rigo continued.
"This can't be happening. Today can't be our last day. I was so mean." Shauna said but soon backed up because of Martin coughing up blood. Andy sees and talks into her radio again.
"I repeat, I repeat! Severe blunt trauma to the chest!"
"Should go? Can we go?" Shauna asked.
"He stopped breathing," Rigo said
"Let's go to the hospital!" Shauna tried to plead.
"Get an ET tube ready," Andy told Rigo.
"Let's go to the hospital!" Shauna continued to beg.
"Not until we secure his airway. I need you to stay back, Shauna." And told Shauna.
"Come on breathe. He can't die. He can't die. He can't die." Shauna kept repeating
Andy tried to stop her "Shauna- Shauan, I need you-"
"He can't die. He can't die." Shauna continued.
"Shauna, I really need you to stay back." Andy tried to tell her again.
"You can't die, Dad! You can't leave me again!"
"...and give us some space to work," Andy said, again.
"I need suction. I need suction." Rigo told Andy.
"He can't. He can't. He wanted to walk me down the aisle. He just came back. He said he's sorry." Shauna continued to talk. "I need to forgive him! I need time to forgive him!" Shauna said, breaking down.
Andy looked up for a second when she finally heard the sirens of Engine 19 and Ladder 19 but focused back on Martin. "AAll right it's- it's been too long. Bag him." Andy tried to tell Rigo.
"I can do it. Just let-"
Andy cuts him off "No, I said bag him."
Shauna continued to beg and plead. "Dad, please. Please, please." slightly quieter "Come on. Come on."
When the trucks stopped Andy walked over to the rest of her team and brought them up to speed. "I've got two patients. A mild carbon monoxide is poising and severe blunt trauma. Needs an airway, and we can't quite get it. Could use Warren."
"Warren, you and Montgomery swap out Herrera and Vasquez on the aid car." Travis and Ben run over to the aid car, "What else?" Maya asked Andy.
"We've got corroding power lines in the sewers, releasing carbon monoxide and smoke. The tiniest spark could ignite that gas. Every manhole cover on this block is a projective waiting to happen." Andy told Maya.
"Call the city. Tell them to kill the power" Maya told Andy before turning around to the rest of her team. "Hughes, Miller, hit that manhole with extinguishers. No water. I repeat, no water until the electricity is off!" Maya told them.
Rigo comes over. "You pulled me off aid car?" he asks.
"Yeah. I don't know your skills. I know theirs." Maya told him. "Gibson and Vasquez, you're on evac duty. Clear the whole neighbourhood." starts to speak into her radio "Dispatch, we're gonna need additional units and SPD on the scene ASAP."
Back in the ambulance Warren and Montgomery were working on Martin.
Warren "It's tough to visualize the cords. Come on. Come on."
Shauna was still crying, not being able to hold it together anymore.
"Shauna, try to take some deep breaths, okay? We're doing everything we can." Travis told her.
"I'm in," Warren told Travis. Travis moved to the front of the ambulance "Alright, seatbelts, everybody. We're on the move."
"Is he breathing? Did you- Did you save him?" Shauna asked but Warren didn't reply.
Andy is on the phone with the city, trying to get them to cut the power. "No. N- No, I need it done faster than that."
While Jack and Rigo were trying to push the crowd back Rigo noticed smoke coming from another manhole. Vasquez went to go and open it even though Jack told him to stand down, he didn't listen so Jack ran towards him and knocked him to the ground, making sure he didn't get hit by the blast. Jack and Rigo argue about it while Miller and Hughes use extinguishers to put out the fire and while they are there's an explosion from the bridal shop. Jack asks if there's anyone in there and Andy brought up the store's owner.
When Andy is getting ready to go in Jack goes over to her since he was going in to sweep too "I'm sick over Tanner. I can't imagine how you feel."
"I know the layout in there," Andy told Jack, ignoring what he said.
"You don't have to do this," Jack told her.
"Stop trying to protect me," Andy said, looking at Jack.
Andy and Jack go in the store together "Seattle Fire Department. Call out so we can locate you!" Andy called out. Both Andy and Jack make their way through the store and they put out a small fire before Jack thinks he hears something and Andy calls out again "Seattle Fire Department! Call out so we can locate you!" Andy looks around for a few seconds "I can hear somebody." as she hears coughs. "There she is. Here. I got her." Andy and Jack both lift her and make their way out of the store. They put her down on a gurney and while Andy is working on her she gets flashbacks of Ryan, When they were together and when he was dying. They save her but she walks away when Jack tries to "high-five" Andy with his arm since he had gloves on.
Back at the station
Andy is cleaning one of the trucks when Maya goes over to her.
"Gotta say, today feels like a "Fries and Milkshakes after shift" day." Andy doesn't say anything. "Fries and beers?" Maya tries. "Whiskey and beers?"
"Can you- Can you stop?" Andy said while moving over to a different spot of the truck.
"Stop what?" Maya asked
"Trying to pretend like this perky cheerleader thing you're doing isn't because I watched Ryan die," Andy said, still focusing on wiping the truck.
"I'm not. I'm just trying to figure out what you need."
"What I need is for just one friend- one- to not look at me like you're looking at me right now. One friend to just sit next to me and let me talk or not talk or cry or not cry and not have an opinion about it. One friend. That's all I need." Andy stops to look at Maya quickly. "Can you be that friend?"
"Yeah, I can be that friend," Maya told her.
Later in the day, at night time
Sullivan was standing outside when Pruitt came to him. "Congratulations on the promotion."
Sullivan chuckles "What can I do for you?"
"You filling that empty office downstairs soon?" Pruitt asked as the two walked.
"Oh. You want your old job back?" Sullivan joked
"Not quite." Pruitt stopped walking. "Oh, you're - you're here to lobby for Andy, huh?"
"Actually, against her," Pruit told him.
"You don't want her to be captain?" Sullivan asked, confused.
"I do. someday. I want her to have your job someday. I want her to be fire chief someday. And none of that will happen if you promote her now." Sullivan continues to look confused as they walk again "I saw a look on Andy's face at Ryan's funeral that I haven't seen since her mother passed away. She went numb, wouldn't talk, wouldn't eat, wouldn't sleep. She wouldn't even cry. And the only person that could get her to feel again just died. And it's gonna get worse, her year. It's- it's gonna get a lot worse."
"She was nine years old when her mother died." Sullivan scoffs "Andy's a grown woman now. She deserves captain. She's earned it." Sullivan tried to argue.
"She has one shot at this, and I'm telling you, If you give it to her now, she'll blow it." Sullivan just looked at him for a few moments.
"Captain Herrera. I'm sorry, I really am sorry for your and Andy's loss. But I've already made up my mind and signed the paperwork." Robert watches his face shift, to a mad expression. "I'm sorry, Sir. But the papers will be on Dixon's desk tonight. He wanted a female firefighter and Maya's barely been a lieutenant for 5 minutes. I can't give it to Jack because, well, he's probably not ready and he is still dealing with his PTSD." Robert pauses and moves in front of Pruitt to make sure he doesn't walk away. "I understand your concern. I really and truly do. You care for your daughter. But you've already blocked her promotion once with Ripley. You can't keep doing that to her. I'll make therapy sessions mandatory for her but this is happening. With or without you're approval."
"If she falls apart, if she makes a mistake and puts the team in danger or worse, that'll be on you," Pruitt said and walked away.
"I'm announcing she's being made captain tomorrow around 10 am. I'm sure she'd want you to be there along with everyone else, Sir." Sullivan told him as he was walking away. He got no reply as Pruitt just kept walking. Robert just sighed and made his way back into the station. He walked through the firehouse and he finally saw her in the beanery.
"Herrera" Andy looked up from the carrot she was cutting "I need to speak to you in my office. You can meet me there. I just need to wash my hands." Robert said, walking over to the sink.
Andy nods and makes her way out of the beanery, wondering what Sullivan would need to talk to her about.
I think that this is the longest chapter I've ever written. It was weird but some of what happened is also straight from the show (actually watching it right now) so that may be why it's so long. I don't know medical terms, or medical procedures, so that's why I don't have anything in here besides what was scripted.
