"Come on, you need to eat some veggies." I keep my mouth firmly closed. "No." "What is so hard about eating a green veggie?" "M'lady, I despise broccoli." Felix, my cousin when we were little used to call it the Tree of Doom. "Cat, you have fish and rice, but to keep up your strength you need some vegetables. What could I do to make you eat it?" Mm, now that's a tempting offer. "Maybe a little kiss?" "Go for option two." Rats, okay then… "Make me a cake when we get back. And make sure its chocolate." "Done. Now, good ahead."
I glare down at the green little tree, and close my eyes and pop it in. "See, that wasn't so bad, wasn't it?" I don't answer, but instead eat what's up in front of me. "You do cook a nice fish, Bugaboo." "Thanks. I learned most of my cooking skills from my mother. Hopefully one day I'll pass them down to my kids." Its rare that Ladybug talks about her future, so I leap at the opportunity. "You want kids?"
"I've wanted them since I was a teenager. Had their names picked out and everything. I'm not sure if the guy I liked wanted kids, but he'd be perfect." Ladybug's face takes on a dreamy look, and I wonder who mystery boy is. "Do you want kids, Kitty?" I shift around in my spot. "I'm not sure. I didn't get much love from my father as a child. What if I end up like my father?" Ladybug comes to sit down next to me and takes my hand. "I don't see that happening, seeing how well you take of me. You'd make the perfect father. Loving. Sweet. Attentive." "Could I at least tell them puns?" I give her a small grin. "One of you is quite a enough, but I suppose one or two wouldn't hurt."
Just then we hear a giggle and the murmur of voices on one of the nearby islands. Ladybug sighs. "You want to take a walk down the beach?" I nod, standing up.
The sun set long ago, and the moon is just peeking over the horizon. The gentle waves lap at our feet, and slowly Ladybug takes my hand. She quiet and I wonder what's going through her mind. That is until I see the dribble of tears leaking down her face, and I pull her to a stop. "Come here," I say, giving her a hug. I begin to rub her back gently. "What's the reason for the tears?" "Talking about kids makes me want them badly, but for that to happen I would have to tell the boy who I am under the mask. If he knew, he'd surely walk away!" I hold her tighter. "Even if he did, I love whoever is under the mask." "Even if I stumble over my words and am I giant klutz?" "Even then. I love you just the way you are, and I always will."
Ladybug steps back, wiping her eyes, then looks into my mine. "Cat?" "Yes?" "Could I give you a kiss after all? I mean, you did eat your broccoli…." her voice trails off as my lips find hers, and I'm amazed at how soft but warm they are. Her hands wind around my neck, and after getting some air we kiss for a second time. "I will always be here, M'lady. I promise." Ladybug gives me one last little kiss. "We should be heading off to bed soon. I saw a couple of hollowed out trees. We can sleep in those. Make sure you grab a lantern."
I find my tree and crawl into my make sure den, detransforming. "Plagg, here's some cheese, but I want to watch Ladybug. I'll see you in the morning." I watch Plagg fly out like a black shadow, and Ladybug's kiss still lingering on my lips I fall asleep quickly.
A tapping sound wakes me in the morning. "Oh, Kitty. I have breakfast and coffee." "Plagg, Claws Out!" "Morning, Bugaboo!" I poke my head out my den, and Ladybug bursts into giggles. "Your-your hair!" she grabs her stomach, doubling over. I climb out and stretch. "Okay, surely its not that funny." "yes-yes, it is. Here." she hands me her bug phone with the mirror app. My hair is sticking out in every direction. "And here I thought you always woke up looking perfect!" She takes my hand. "Don't worry, I'll help you with her hair."
"Yours looks nice this morning. Is that a new look?" She sporting two little buns while the rest of her tumbles down like a black waterfall. "Just thought I'd give it a try. Do you like it?" "Very much. In fact, it reminds of a cute little mouse."
Ladybug makes breakfast and we clean up camp. "So, what shall we do for the day?" "Gideon didn't give us any specific instructions. Maybe we could use our aqua powers and go swimming?"
Its already hot, and a refreshing swim does sound nice. Under the water is another world, I point out all kinds of tropical fish to Ladybug. "What's that cave lead to?" She wonders and starts to venture towards it.
The cave is big enough for the both of us to swim side by side, but Ladybug takes my hand. It makes me happy she's getting more and more comfortable holding it. We swim up into a cathedral like cavern. A small path leads us to a lookout.
Another island looms in the distance, but unlike our peaceful island, it looks dark and foreboding. A castle sits perched upon it. "Who do you think lives there?" Ladybug whispers as if the rock walls have ears. "Let's see if we can get closer."
It takes time, but we reach the island late afternoon. "I'll take one side, you take the other," I whisper.
The walls are thick, the walls a grayish color. Watchtowers perch at each side, and I keep low in the water. A man looks out over the water, and I want a closer look. Is he a prisoner here, or does he live here? Going as close as I dare, I swim ever closer, wishing now I hadn't. For the face that stares across across the water is the face of my father, Gabriel Agreste.
Father is….alive? How? Even Mother didn't know, though we did hold a funeral for him. I want to call up and say your son is here, but I hang back a cold feeling sweeping over. "Nooroo, Dark Wings rise." I gasp in horror as Father dons the suit of Hawkmoth, our enemy the one who tumbled into the fog.
"My birds can find them easily, but their smart. Didn't you say the girl nearly defeated you?" "Her name is Ladybug, and her partner is Cat Noir. Though they deny their love for each other, they would die to protect each other." "Love may be their strength, but it could also be their weakness. Capture one, and the other would come running." "Yes. But now is not the time to strike. Now, I'd like to be alone."
My eyes sting as Hawkmoth drops his transformation. "Adrien, my child, I miss you and your Mother terribly. But to cure her illness, I had to lie."
I've heard what I needed to hear and slip beneath the waves. Ladybug is waiting, hair streaming out like a wave. "My wall had a couple of guards patrolling, but other then that it was quiet. Yours?" "M'lady, I saw Hawkmoth."
Ladybug whitens. "Cat, don't lie to me. He died, we both saw it happen." "I wouldn't lie to you. Now, lets head back, I've seen enough." A cold numb feeling spreads through my body. "Shouldn't we…." Ladybug's voice is hesitate. "Now!"
I dive, not waiting for, entering the cave. Not looking where I am going when I enter the small cavern, I trip over a small chest.
"Cat, you can't just take off like that! What if we got separated?" She's right, and I can feel my anger fading away. After all, this isn't her fault. "I won't do it again. What do you think is in this trunk?" The anger falls off her face, and curiously replaces it. "Use your baton to break the lock."
Bang! I have to hit the lock a couple of times, before the lock falls off. Slowly, I open the lid and I wonder if today has only been a dream. Coins fill the chest, and I turn to Ladybug. "Did we just find treasure?" "I think we might of, Kitty. I think it would okay to take a small handful, and leave the rest for another traveler."
She pours them into her bug phone. "Where do things go, once you put them in there?" "Into the Miracle Box, hidden somewhere in Paris." "Your not worried someone could find it?" Ladybug suddenly looks uncomfortable. "There's only one person that knows where it is, in case something should happen to me." She squares her shoulders. "We should be getting back. By the time we reach the island it will be time to head back to the boats."
Again, Sapphire and Orion have won the challenge when we return to the Temple, and I congratulate them. "We're going to make milkshakes, Cat. Want to come? Ladybug's coming."
I don't feel like celebrating and I want to be alone. "Maybe I'll catch up with you later," and I hurry away. I wander into a building I've never seen before and a Guardian finds me looking lost. "I take it you've had yet to explore the library, Cat Noir." "So, that's what this building is." "Relax and enjoy yourself. Level Three even has a coffee bar," he winks at me before strolling on. "Thank you," I call back.
I work my way to Level Three, buying a small cup of coffee then walk towards a circle of comfy chairs. Its quiet, and I take the risk of detransforming. For there's an important phone call I need to make and it cannot wait.
