Chapter 24: Should be interesting
"Diamond storm!"
Sasuke pulled out his kunai to deflect as many of the energy shards raining down at him. He was able to block a good amount of them but when he saw that he couldn't block them all, he lowered himself into a crouch and brought his arms up to guard against them. He let out a sigh as the raining shards stopped.
Renamon landed in front of him and crossed her arms. "You were able to block more than the last time but I don't think you will ever be able to block them all with your speed right now."
Sasuke grunted in acknowledgment before he bowed to her. "Thanks for helping me with my training."
Renamon nodded as the two began to walk back to the rest of the group, who were sitting in another clearing while she went off further into the caravan.
It had been a week since the group had left Konoha and according to the Digimon, they were making decent time.
Sasuke plopped himself down next to Gazimon and looked his kunai over.
Gazimon looked at the kunai as well and smirked. "I've seen wood less chipped than that."
Sasuke nudged Gazimon as he agreed. The kunai was so jagged that he was sure it was about to snap if he poked it.
Instead, Gazimon poked it causing it to snap.
Sasuke gave Gazimon a flat look, causing the gray digimon to chuckle sheepishly, before he sighed and just dropped the kunai, and just looked toward Menma and Kasumi. It was then that he noticed that there were a few missing.
The ones missing were Davis, TK and Patamon, Kiba and Gaomon, Lee and Monodramon, Matt and Gabumon, Tai and Agumon, Joe and Goamamon, Kari and Gatomon, and last was Naruto and his group of Digimon.
"Where's Naruto? Shouldn't he be guarded by all the Digimon here?"
Kasumi lowered the camera she was using to film the training as Menma threw his thumb over his shoulder. "He's training with his Digimon. They were trying out some coordination combos last I saw."
"Come on! You got this!"
The shout caught the attention of the humans and their Digimon. They got curious as that sounded like Davis.
Menma chuckled as he spoke to them all. "Wanna go see what got him so excited? Also, it sounds like it came from where Naruto was so if I know anything about Davis, it has to do with messing with our brother."
Kasumi sighed as she nodded. "Yeah, let's go. I'm sure that whatever it is, should be entertaining." She got up with Betamon jumping to be on her head.
With that, the group got up and made their way toward the shout. As they got closer, they began to hear more shouts, almost cheering. As they got closer, they saw that there was a group of Digimon circling around something. They saw Renamon on one of the branches of a tree which gave her a view of what the others were looking at.
Said fox Digimon was in a crouch as her focus was on it till she noticed them coming closer. She looked at them and acknowledged them with a nod. "Looks like you aren't the only one that wanted to get some training done, Sasuke."
The arriving group tried to look past the wall of Digimon but with how the Digimon were moving, they couldn't.
One of the Digimon noticed them and got the attention of the others so they could make space. It took some maneuvering, but they were able to move enough so they could keep watching and the arrivals could get a view too.
The sight they saw was impressive.
Menma crossed his arms and smirked as Kasumi brought up her camera to film this new spectacle
Shin met shin as two high kicks met each other. A flurry of blows were sent flying from the two fighters. Fists were blocked by wrists, kicks were blocked by knees, and focused eyes never left focused eyes.
The audience was cheering for one or the other but it was hard to tell who was being cheered for the most with the cacophony of shouts.
A palm struck the chest of the opponent and sent him flying.
Naruto flipped in the air before landing in a crouch. He rubbed his chest and looked up at his opponent with a smirk, as she charged at him. Jumping on his back came another.
"Paw Punch!"
Coming from under the arm of the opponent was another fighter. "Lightning paw!"
Mikemon's punch met Gatomon's, causing a small shockwave that threw the two cat Digimon back. Naruto stretched his arm up and Mikeon spun around it before she dropped down in front of Naruto. Gatomon backflipped onto Kari's shoulder.
Cheers kept going at the spectacle
"Go for it, Kari! Show that Narrato who's boss!" was Davis's cheer as he pumped his fist.
TK couldn't help but shake his head at Davis's weird habit of getting names wrong. He looked back to the fight and cupped his hands around his mouth. "You guy's are looking great! Keep it up." He noticed that someone new came up to his side and smiled. "I wondered where you guys were. You came just in time to see how these two are doing."
Yolie looked at the boy as she asked. "What's this fight about? Did they get into an argument or something?"
Patamon looked down at her as he was sitting on TK's head. "Naw, this is just a match they decided to do. They were bored and wanted to do something to pass the time. It was actually Davis that brought up the idea."
Davis paused in his cheering and looked at them. "What'd I do?"
TK chuckled. "We're talking about how you asked something that got them curious and it ended up like this." He winced as saw Kari get kicked in the side before she brought up a fist to uppercut Naruto in the chin.
Cody watched the fight with intrigue. "Seems pretty spirited to be something simple. Not to mention that they are using their Digimon as partners."
TK pointed to Kiba this time, who was on the other side of the fight. "Kiba was the one to bring that up. He said something about how since almost all of the shinobi have Digimon and they can fight, why not fight like an Inuzuka? He said, and I quote 'Just cause we ain't got those fancy devices doesn't mean we can't fight with our Digimon friends'. And that's when they decided to fight with a partner."
Naruto threw a fist at Kari's face but it was intercepted by Gatomon before she kicked him away. Mikemon jumped at the white cat but Kari struck her away.
Matt was leaning against a tree watching the fight with Gabumon sitting at his feet. The boy looked down at his left at Tai who was sitting on the ground with his arm on his propped-up leg. "You sure you're ok with this? Your sister is getting hurt out there."
Tai let out a small sigh as he looked up at his best human friend. "When she first started as a kunoichi, I gotta admit that I was worried every time she went into the ring, but I guess after so many times of seeing it and all the times she had to talk to me that this was normal and that I don't have to worry, I… can tolerate it."
Agumon patted Tai's shoulder in order to comfort him. "You know that she wanted this and it looks like she is having some fun."
Tai nodded as he saw that he had a small smile on her face. "I think it is more that she enjoys getting some exercise. Not to mention that she was able to land a hit on Naruto since he has more practice."
Matt nodded as he looked back to the match. "Not only that, fighting alongside their Digimon must be adding to their enjoyment."
Gabumon rubbed the top of his head. "Yeah, but I wouldn't be able to do what Gatomon and Mikemon are doing."
Matt chuckled. "Maybe we can come up with something ourselves."
Tai nodded as he thought that maybe he should do the same with Augumon. He may not be a shinobi but he does have his partner.
Back at the fight, Mikemon flipped up to land on Naruto's head as he jumped back and pulled his fist back. "Hand of Fate!" He launched a beam of light from his thrusted fist.
Kari jumped as the beam struck the ground where she was standing at. She then went through some hand signs as she focused her chakra. 'Please work.' "Lightning style: double Neko prowl!" When she landed on the ground, she slammed her hands down, causing two small bursts of lighting to come out and took the shape of, what could be mistaken for, cat Digimon that began to zig-zag toward Naruto.
Naruto panicked at the sight and instantly made a quick decision. Slamming his hands together, he called out. "Angel staff!" Summoning his staff, he jammed it into the ground and leaped back.
The two lightning cats seemed to shift directions and were directed toward the staff. Once they hit the staff, they burst into electric sparks but the rod concentrated most of it into the dirt, grounding it.
Naruto let out a breath of relief as he wasn't sure that would work. He had never seen Kari use that move before so he could only assume that it was new. "Ok, if you wanna try something new, then I should too." he pulled both hands back at his sides and focused on his power. Once he was sure he had it, he smirked. "Hand of fate…..barrage!" He began to punch the air in the direction of Kari with small blasts of the same energy used for his Hand of fate.
Kari's eyes widened as she began to jump out of the way of the blasts.
Gatomon held onto Kari's head to keep from falling off. She had heard that Angemon could do this with their attack but this is the first time she had seen it. And she wasn't sure if the "Barrage" part of the name was needed. She was thankful that Kari was able to avoid the attacks as Naruto stopped.
Naruto began to breathe a bit heavier as that attack was something he came up with on the spot and he didn't know that it would take up that much energy.
Mikemon noticed this and figured that she would need to guard him so he could regain some stamina. She brought up her claws as they shimmered. Her eyes shifted to something else and she got a plan.
Gatomon saw that Mikemon was going to be the front-runner here so she chose to take the lead as well. She got on all fours and ran toward the two. Once she was close enough, she jumped in the air with her claw poised to strike. "Lightning paw!"
Mikemon saw her fellow cat and jumped to intercept. "Cat claw!"
The two cats met each other in the air before they began to swipe at their opponent. Flashes of their claws flew past the other as they slowly lowered to the ground.
Sora smirked as she watched the fight. "Never thought this would turn into a literal catfight."
Mimi, who was standing next to her nodded. "Bet some of the boys are thinking the same thing."
The two girls laughed at the little joke before looking back to the match.
Biymon shivered as she thought about fighting like that. "I just know my feathers would be all over the place if I was in the middle of that."
Palmon nodded in agreement. "Yeah, but you gotta admit, it is really cool to watch."
Biyomon nodded. "Watching two champions go all out with no hard feelings has its own charm."
Gatomon saw an opening and took it as she kicked Mikemon in the stomach.
Mikemon though wanted that, as she flipped in the air before she spun around and used her tail to hit the Angel staff that was still in the ground. She had used the catfight in order to position herself in a way that if she was hit, she would be sent toward the staff, which she could then send it back to Naruto.
Naruto grabbed the staff with one hand and charged at Kari.
Kari pulled out a kunai in order for her to defend herself, but she also saw that Gatomon shifted positions and aimed to kick Naruto in the back. She jumped forward to meet Naruto's charge and keep his attention on her. She brought her kunai back to swipe at Nartuos's staff. Yet when he got close enough, he jumped and twirled his body, causing the cat Digimon's kick to fly over him and unfortunately, kick Kari in the chest. The two rolled on the ground with Kari holding onto her partner. When they finally stopped on their back, they opened their eyes to see Naruto in the air with his staff held up in an overhead smash. Kari rolled to the side as his staff smashed into the spot she was at. She kicked off the ground to land on her feet, with Gatomon landing at her side, as she thought of something else she could do. She looked to Gatomon and nodded as they were going to try something.
Gatomon nodded as she flexed her claws and flicked her ears.
Naruto pulled out his staff and spun it before positioning it behind him with Mikemon landing on the end of the staff as they faced off with Kari and Gatomon. Seeing Kari charge at him, he chose to meet it till
*Whistle*
Naruto raised an eyebrow at the noise but didn't have much time to think about it since Gatomon came running in low before she swiped her claw up toward his chin.
Naruto dug his feet into the dirt and leaned back in order to avoid it. However, that left him wide open as Kari came in and thrust-kicked him in the stomach, sending him back.
Mikemon jumped off the staff and brought her claw down at Kari's head.
Kari looked up and saw it coming. *whistle whistle*
Mikemon's claw was intercepted by Gatomon's claw causing them both to spin back.
*whistle whistle whistle*
Gatomon swung her tail behind her and wrap around Kari's arm as the girl jumped back, taking her along. Once the girl landed, she spun around the arm and landed on Kari's shoulder.
Mikemon landed on the ground before she got on all fours and ran back to Naruto who was getting up from the ground.
Naruto held his stomach as he looked up at Kari. 'what the hell?' He focused on her and saw that she now had her whistle in her mouth. Thinking back to the last actions, he realized that the whistle must be some sort of command to tell Gatomon what to do. 'Damn, me and Mikemon don't have that kind of coordination.' He looked into Kari's eyes and could see excitement. 'And here she is showing off.' He smirked back and stood up straighter. He tried to think of what he could do to counter their coordination.
*whistle*
Naruto was brought out of his thoughts when he saw Gatomon begin to move with Kari following right behind. He pulled his fist back as it lit up. "Hand of fate!"
Gatomon shifted to the right side as Kari moved to the left to avoid the blast as they kept charging.
Mikemon ran toward Gatomon with Naruto taking a second before he moved toward Kari.
Naruto held his staff to the side as he finally came up with an idea. A risky one but it might work. He looked to the side at Mikemon before it went forward to Gatomon. He quickly spun his staff before he threw it. "Angel rod!"
Gatomon saw the staff heading her way and was about to dodge till.
*whistle-whistle-whistle*
Gatomon responded to the whistle by changing the direction she was going to jump and instead jumped toward Kari.
The staff jammed at an angle in the dirt and Mikemon ran up it before jumping into the air.
Naruto took the chance he got and ran faster as he pulled his hand back.
Kari saw Naruto charge up his attack but knew she was too close and moving too fast to dodge efficiently. Instead, she brought her nad forward so she could deflect the fist in another direction. What she knew about the move was that it would be fired in the direction the fist was pointed. She was even about to give a command to Gatomon to attack as well, however, he did something that she did not expect.
Once Naruto was close enough, instead of shooting his attack at Kari, he shot it straight down into the ground right in front of him.
Kari, Gatomon, and even Mikemon yelped as the attack exploded, picking up a large dust cloud.
Kari rolled on the ground before she stopped on her back. She coughed out her whistle thanks to the dirt before she tried pushing herself up, only to feel something pressing on her neck. Once the dust cleared, she saw Naruto standing over her with his staff poised to keep her down. Shifting her eyes to the side, she saw that Mikemon had Gatomon in a similar position as she had her claws pointing at Gatomon's face.
The four were taking in gulps of air since they were exhausted as the audience went silent.
"That's enough."
The combatants didn't even look at the one who spoke as Leomon was walking up to them.
Leomon looked at the downed girl and asked. "Well?" It wasn't a harsh question, just one that asked if she was willing to do what she had to.
Kari sighed as she nodded. "I surrender."
Leomon nodded as he gestured to Naruto. "Winner of the match: Naruto and Mikemon!"
The majority of the watchers cheered at the result, with a few feeling down that Kari and Gatomon lost.
Naruto smiled as he dismissed his staff, held out a hand, which Kari took, and helped her up. Once he saw her up and a smile on her face, he let his adrenaline die down and he collapsed to the ground.
"Naruto!"
Naruto held up a hand in the air and waved it erratically. "I'm ok!"
Renamon landed over him and looked at his face with a smile. "Is that why you collapsed after winning?" Was her snarky remark as she knelt down and tapped his forehead.
Naruto gave her a dry look. "I'll have you know that I did not collapse. I just…. Chose to nap right here."
Everyone there shook their head before Ranamon bent down and picked him up from under his arms. "Sure, you did." She then began to drag him to the sidelines where his siblings were with Kari and Renamon following.
Naruto smiled at the sight of his brother and sister. "Hey, guys."
Kasumi shook her head. "Mind telling us why you two are fighting?"
Naruto smiled at them as he was put down. "Well, we all thought that being cheated out of the chunin exams before we even got the chance to participate wasn't fair. When they asked me what would have been part of it, I told them that there would be a tournament at the end of it. I don't know what the second part of the exams was going to be since they change it all the time and Dad didn't tell us about it. So we chose that we should try the third part out and see who might have gotten the chance to become a chunin. We randomly chose who would be the first fight and me and Kari got picked. We then got a cool idea that we should fight with our Digimon." He looked around and saw that many of the Digimon were congratulation him.
Kasumi and Menma looked at each other and shrugged as they didn't see a problem with it. They too were looking forward to that part as it would be a way for them to see how far they have come in their training. Not to mention that it would have been the biggest chunin exam ever since they had expanded the stadium so that the Digimon could sit and watch.
Once Naruto sat on the ground with Mikemon sitting in his lap, his other Digimon sat behind him as Kari sat on his left since his siblings were on his right.
Kari crossed her legs so that Gatomon could sit on her lap and she began to pet her Digimon partner as she spoke to Naruto. "I really thought I had you with my jutsu. Took me a long time to come up with it and I was glad it worked, but you were able to stop it before it could hit you."
Gatomon opened one of her eyes to look at Naruto with a pouting glare. "I'm kinda mad that you stopped it. I wanted to see it work after all the time Kari and I went through for it." She closed her eye and began to pur as Kari's hand reached her sweet spot.
Naruto chuckled at how Gatomon went from a pouting complaint to pure bliss. "I'm just glad it worked. I didn't want t get shocked by electric kitties." He began to do what Kari was doing as he began to pet Mikemon.
Mikemon lifted her head and looked at Kari. "What was that whistle thing you were doing?"
Kari smiled as she used her other hand to grip her whistle. "I wanted to have something that me and Gatomon could use. She brought up how I speak with my whistle at times and we thought that I could use that to issue commands to help us fight together. We got a good rhythm for it but this was the first time we used it in a real match."
Naruto was impressed. "Well, keep it up. You almost got us with that and your new jutsu. I'm just glad that my last move worked." When he finished his statement, he felt Mikemon slap him in the face with her tail.
"You scared me with that! I didn't know you were going to make the ground explode! I was just lucky to land in front of Gatomon and stop her from getting up cause I think I lost two of my nine lives from you shocking me."
Naruto laughed as he scratched behind her ears. "Sorry about that, Mikemon." He was suddenly startled when a Tokomon began to jump around him.
"That was amazing. I never saw something like that before."
Naruto chuckled as he patted the Tokomon on the head. "Well, I'm glad that you liked it, Tokomon, and I'm really glad it worked. It was one of the gambles I did during the fight since the Hand of Fate barrage wasn't something I was sure would work either. I thought about it before and I tried it some times but I guess it worked better in this fight."
The Tokomon had sparkles around his eyes as he was in awe at how he was able to do something that even the Digimon who uses the move might not know. "That is so amazing!" He jumped around the prince of Digimon before he found his jumping stopped by large clawed hands.
"You shouldn't be so close to the battlefield."
Tokomon's ears drooped as if he was in trouble. "Sorry, Leomon."
Naruto smiled at the lion Digimon before shifting it to Tokomon. "He's just trying to make sure you guys don't get hurt. You can watch from a distance."
Tokomon nodded softly as he mumbled out. "Ok."
Naruto brought his hand up and patted him on the head. "Don't feel bad, you can watch from a distance."
Leomon nodded in agreement as he began to take Tokomon away to be with the rest of the younger Digimon.
It was agreed by the Digimon leaders that some of the younger Digimon should be brought with this traveling caravan in order to have them get used to the new location.
Elecmon was the one that was the most adamant that they shouldn't leave the nursery. He wanted to keep an eye on all of the young ones till they were at least rookie level so they could defend themselves better. It took a lot of negotiating and they allowed only a few of the in-training Digimon to go. Elecmon put the well-being of them in Leomon's hands and the noble Digimon accepted.
Davis and TK finally made it to where Naruto and Kari were sitting, with the former of the boys calling out. "Kari! You ok?"
Kari looked at them and smiled up at the arrivals. "Yeah, Davis, I'm fine."
Davis crossed his arms as he eyed Naruto before huffing and looking away. "Well, I'm sure you would have won if it weren't for Nanato and his glowing hand thing."
TK rolled his eyes as he gestured to the two. "Forgetting Davis's pouting, you two were great out there. Though, I have a question, why didn't you two digivolve?" He directed the question to the cat Digimon, who looked up at him in intrigue. "I'm sure that you could have changed the way the fight would have gone if you did. Especially you, Mikemon. Going to the champion level would have given you the edge."
Mikemon and Gatomon giggled with the former looking up at the hat-wearing boy. "I'm already at the Champion level."
Gatomon continued here. "And none of us have been able to reach the Ultimate level."
TK raised an eyebrow as he looked to Naruto.
Naruto figured out what he was asking so he clarified. "Ultimate level is the Digivolution that is after Champion and we have tried reaching that level before but I couldn't. It was like there was something blocking it. We even tried with Kari's Digivice adding to it but it was still not working."
Patamon patted TK's head. "I don't think we need to reach that level yet. Most of us haven't even Digivolved to champion yet. Agumon was the only one that digivolved to Champion apart from Gatomon."
TK chuckled as he remembered that. "Yeah, and I don't think we want him to stay that big the whole way. Everyone in the whole Elemental Nations would be able to see where we were."
Everyone laughed at that as Leomon walked up to the area meant for the matches and called out.
"Ok, who will be the next one to step up?"
Matt thought about it for a split second before he raised his hand. "I'll take up the next spot." he pushed himself off the tree he was leaning on and moved to the makeshift arena with Gabumon following.
Tai got up and patted Matt on the shoulder. "Good luck, man."
Matt smirked at Tai, turning to him, and the two fist-bumped.
Leomon nodded as he looked at the rest. "Who will be the one to face Matt?"
The rest of the genin were thinking about if they wanted to go or not as well as asking if the others wanted to go. It wasn't that they were afraid of Matt, but there were some that wanted to fight specific genin, for one reason or another.
Sasuke shrugged and walked forward. "I'll do it." He began to move only to be stopped by Renamon's paw on his shoulder.
"Are you sure you should fight? You did go through some training minutes ago."
Sasuke gave her a confident smirk. "I'll be fine. That little training won't slow me down." He continued on with Gazimon following till they stood in the arena opposite Matt.
Renamon hummed at his confidence before she moved back to sit behind Naruto.
Naruto looked over his shoulder at Renamon. "How was the training? It was random for him to ask you to help him in his training."
Renamon shrugged. "He wanted to try deflecting my diamond storm. He was able to deflect some but not all."
Naruto nodded. "I remember doing that. You broke so many sets of kunai that Dad told us to stop so we didn't go through my allowance so quickly."
Renamon smiled at the memory. "I still went easy on you during those."
Naruto pouted at her before he felt a weight on his head. He looked up to see Meicoonmon booking at him upside down.
"Who are you going to use in your next match? Can I be it?"
Mikemon looked up from his lap. "Or you could have Ranamon go. She hasn't trained much so maybe she could use this to get stronger."
Ranamon puffed out her cheeks as she put her hands on her hips. "Hey! I'm plenty strong!"
Mikemon gave her a look that screamed "Uh-huh".
Coronamon looked past Menma as he growled. "Hey, no fair! The rest of us wouldn't get a break if our partner has to fight more than once. Why do you get to switch!?"
Naruto shrugged and pointed at the Digimon that were surrounding him. "I got choices." Though, he wasn't sure if Lunamon would want to be part of it since she never really showed interest in fighting. He looked at the moon Digimon over his other shoulder as if asking with his eyes.
Lunamon could tell what he was asking and nodded, saying that she was ok if she joined him in a match. She hadn't fought a lot so she was rusty. Though, there was something she did feel should be addressed. "I think that what Coronamon said is something we should consider. To be fair, Naruto shouldn't switch with the rest of us since the others wouldn't be able to. To keep things fair, Mikemon should be his partner for this. We can fight together some other time, ok?"
The rest of Naruto's Digimon thought about it and had to agree.
Mikemon though, grumbled at not getting a break. Though it didn't last when Naruto began to pet her again. 'Oh, well. If it means I get more of these healing hands, I'm ok with it.'
Back at the arena, Gazimon smirked as he looked at their opponent. "This should be fun!" He swiped his claws in the air as if showboating.
Sasuke couldn't help but roll his eyes fondly. He loosened his arms as he got into a stance.
Matt smiled as he did the same, ready to start this match.
The crowd began to cheer for the next match.
TK cheered for his brother. "Do your best, Matt, Gabumon, I know you can do it!"
Sakura was the one to cheer the hardest for Sasuke. "Go get 'em, Sasuke! You too, Gazimon!"
Terriermon winced as he rubbed his free ear which started to ring as the other was holding onto her head. "Jeez, can you shout any louder?"
Sakura blushed at that. "Sorry."
Gazimon slumped as he gave Sasuke a dry look. "You and your fan club."
Sasuke rolled his eyes again, this time in slight exasperation.
Leomon looked at the two and asked. "Are you four ready?" Seeing them nod, he took a few steps back. "Very well, Sasuke and Gazimon versus Matt and Gabumon. Combatants: begin!"
Sasuke chose to start things off as he threw some shuriken at Matt and Gabumon before looking at Gazimon.
Gazimon nodded and ran forward.
Matt jumped in front of Gabumon and used a kunai to deflect the shuriken and prepare for whatever Gazimon was going to do.
Gabumon watched Gazimon and prepared for whatever attack he would do to defend Matt.
Much to the shock of Matt and Gabumon, Gazimon didn't attack them. Instead, he jumped into the air before diving into the ground. "Pitfall!"
Matt and Gabumon eyed the hole that Gazimon fell into but had to redirect their attention as they heard rapid footsteps heading their way. They looked up in time to see Sasuke a few feet from them and swinging a kunai.
Matt blocked the swipe before the two began to trade and parry kunai strikes with Gabumon keeping an eye out for Gazimon.
It wasn't a few minutes later that Sasuke jumped back to the spot he started on. It was a second later that Gazimon came out of the ground to stand next to Sasuke.
Gazimon brushed his arms free of the dirt as he grumbled to himself. "We gotta think of something else I can do at the start of fights."
Sasuke kept his gaze on Matt. "Did you do it?"
Gazimon rolled his eyes. "Of course. Should be funny when they find out."
"We can laugh after we win."
Matt eyed the younger boy warily as he didn't know what it was that Gazimon did. It was obvious that Sasuke's assault was meant to buy Gazimon some time. He thought about what the Digimon might have done underground and the only thing he could think of was some sort of trap, especially since the Digimon didn't seem to have done anything other than go underground and come back out. As a precaution, he threw his kunai into the center of the field. He waited for anything to happen but nothing happened. He looked up and saw Sasuke smirk at him, Sharingan activated, with him returning the smirk. He went over what he knew about the Uchiha clan and came up with something that would give him an advantage. "Gabumon, get ready."
Gabumon nodded as he took a few steps back.
Matt pulled out a kunai and threw it at the boy. That was the start of Matt's long-distance assault with him throwing kunai and shuriken.
Sasuke was able to dodge them efficiently but the interval between one weapon to the next was getting smaller. Sasuke figured Matt was keeping his distance as the older boy clearly understood that Gazimon did something to the field. He needed to get Matt moving but with how cautious the guy was, that would be unlikely. So he chose to go with what he could. He jumped back avoiding another set of shuriken and went through hand signs.
Matt saw this and stopped his weapons assault as he tensed his legs. 'Gotcha.'
Once Sasuke finished he inhaled a large amount of air, puffing out his chest, and called out. "Fire style: fireball jutsu!" He unleashed a large fireball at Matt.
However, with the fireball blocking his view, he didn't see the smile on Matt's face. But he did hear the older boy call out.
"Now, Gabumon!"
Gabumon ran to be in front of Matt and called out. "Blue blaster!" out of Gabumon's mouth came blue flames aimed at the fireball heading their way.
When the blue flames hit the fireball, a large amount of steam came from the impact area.
Something they had discovered from Gabumon's blue flame was that, despite looking like flames there was an ice element to it. It wasn't cold enough to actually freeze anything fully but it was cold enough to cause some steam to appear when it impacts fire. Much like now.
Sasuke growled at how the steam blocked his sight of the other two but he kept his guard up for anything. His mind went through what he could do to get an advantage in the battle till he eyed the steam cloud. He smirked as he reached into his weapons pouch and threw a few pellets.
Gazimn grew confused when he saw that they were smoke pellets that took away more visibility. He looked to Sasuke and asked. "Why'd you do that? Now they have more chances to come at us from other angles."
Sasuke put a finger to his mouth, telling Gazimon to keep quiet. He grabbed Gazimon and jumped to the side and crouched down as they watched the large cloud. 'Come on, come on, come on….' His smirk returned when he heard a small yelp from within the cloud. However, he had to bring out a kunai to block Matt's strike. When the older boy landed, Sasuke swung his leg but watched as it was dodged and Matt jumped back.
Matt landed on the ground back in the smoke cloud. He worried that Sasuke would use the smike to assault him but he was relieved to see the smoke clear up. H frowned at the sight as there was clearly someone missing. "Where's Gabumon?"
"I'm down here, Matt."
Matt looked to his right to see that there was a hole. Moving to stand over it, he saw Gabumon struggling to get up at the bottom of the hole. He realized that this was what Gazimon must have done before. 'Damn, with Gabumon down there, I won't be able to fight alongside him.'
Sasuke smirked as he watched to see what the older boy would do. "With your partner out of commission, you are now in a losing battle."
Matt hated to admit it but Sasuke was right. If he couldn't get Gabumon out of the hole quickly, it would be a two-on-one fight and those odds aren't good. He thought about what he could do to turn the tides of this fight but all his plans weren't going to work. Hell, their sneak attack that Mat planned for the steam cover was immediately thrown against him. With his options being limited, he figured he had one chance that they had never tried before. "Gabumon!"
Said Digimon looked up at Matt and was shocked to see him pull something out.
"You ready to give this a try?"
Gabumon was unsure, but if Matt had faith in this, he would go with it. "Ready when you are!"
Matt nodded and brought his hand up. "Hope this works!" In his hand was his Digivice as he held it to his chest and closed his eyes.
Instantly, the device lit up, causing many to have to cover their eyes.
Naruto felt his head tingle as his symbol lit up just like Matt's Digivice. "Yeah!"
Sasuke brought his arms up to block the light but knew what that meant. "Oh, crap!"
[Digivolution]
"Gabumon digivolve to~"
Gabumon's skin peeled off him while his fur covering flew off him. Now with his body in grid form, it grew in size with his limbs elongating and reshaping. He landed on all fours as his snout grew in length. He lifted his head before spewing out blue flames at the floating fur, causing it to burst into the same flames. It landed on top of him, engulfing his whole body in flames. Stepping out of the blue fire, came a large white and blue wolf Digimon before he shot misting flames at the ground and called out his new name.
"Garurumon~"
"Gabumon digivolve to~ Garurumon~"
Bursting from the hole was a pillar of blue flames before something jumped out of it and landed behind Matt.
Sasuke saw this and began to sweat. He didn't expect Gabumon to digivolve and knowing the power boost the Digimon get by doing so, knew that he was now on the losing side. He didn't know how strong Garurumon is but he was sure that if he didn't do something drastic, this match was already lost. He swallowed before looking to Gazimon. "Can you follow suit?"
Gazimon looked at Sasuke as if he was crazy. "Are you kidding! There is no way I could! I don't have the energy to digivolve so asking if I could is like asking a dog if it could become a cat!"
Sasuke rolled his eyes at his friend's analogy. "Well, unlike a dog, you have the capability to actually try!"
Gazimon really didn't know if he could even start the process but with how this match was going, they were going to lose. "If this doesn't work, I get your tomatoes for a week!"
Sasuke glared at Gazimon before gritting out. "Fine, now try it!"
Gazimon moved to stand in front of Sasuke and held his arms to his side. "You got it!"
…..
Nothing happened.
Gazimon stood there with his arms in the same position as he sweated at how ridiculous he looked. 'I should have said three weeks. This is so embarrassing.
Menma leaned to his brother and whispered. "Are you gonna help him or….?"
Naruto snickered at the sight. "Why? This is funny."
Renamon tapped the back of his head. "Naruto, you know you are going to."
Naruto let out a few more snickers as Gazimon held his pose. "Alright." He closed his eyes and concentrated on Gazimon.
Gazimon suddenly felt a surge of power and couldn't believe it. 'Well, looks like I won't get those tomatoes.'
[Digivolution]
"Gazimon digivolve to~"
Gazimon slashed the ground underneath him before he jumped into the dark hole. As he entered, his skin peeled off to reveal the grid form underneath. As he fell into the shadow, it seemed to come alive and wrap him up in its dark embrace. His frame form began to reshape itself, growing larger, and taking a quadrupedal form. Soon the shadow attached itself to his new form. Appearing around his neck was a spiked collar while on the back of each of his leg joints came short blades. He burst out from the hole, landing proudly, and calling out his new name
"Dobermon~"
"Gazimon digivolve to~ Dobermon~"
Now standing in front of Sasuke was his friend in champion form.
Feeling a bit more confident that the playing field has evened out once more, Sasuke smirked at Matt. "let's see how this match is going to end now."
Matt nodded as he stood next to his partner. "Should be interesting."

Ok, one thing about Gabumon's Blueblaster. I found out that in some media, his attacks, including Garurumon's howling blaster have Ice elements to them. I chose to incorporate that into this as it would give more possibilities to what they do.
Ok, one thing about this whole fic. I am going to go back to earlier chapters and fix them since there are a lot of grammatical errors and after all my time improving my writing ability, I feel it is only right I go back and fix them. Nothing will really change, apart from maybe me expanding on some scenes and conversations, I will go back to fix the grammar.
Since the chunin exams were canceled I felt that the rookies would want to try and do them anyway.
These chapters are sort of fillers but they also give me the chance to add digivolutions
The chapters might have one or two fights in them but not everyone will participate as I want to get them moving.
I will be making a new cover art for this fic since the one it has is one I did when I first started digital drawing. My art skills have improved greatly since then.
