AN: With the school year starting as I am now officially a certified teacher, I might only be able to upload on the weekends. Anyway, here is a new chapter.
Summary: Shaun and Lea sketch out their son's nursery and other baby items they might need. Set right after the ending scene in "Quiet and Loud".
Two days after leaving the hospital, Shaun and Lea were back home without any further complications happening. They had already decided on a color for their son's nursery - picking between beige, purple, light blue, teal, taupe, orange, and gray - eventually settling on something in the gray palette. They figured that darker colors would set a calm mood for the baby.
Yesterday, at an appointment with Dr. Winkler, Lea was considered safe for vaginal birth and also knocked down to low risk. However, Lea wasn't sure if she wanted to attempt another pregnancy. Right now, her and Shaun's goal was to keep this baby alive while he is still in utero.
At the dinner table, the parents-to-be were going over an interior design plan for their son's room. They obviously needed a crib, as well as a dresser, changing table, shelf, rocking chair, and maybe a side table and laundry hamper. Most of all, he was definitely going to be sleeping in a bassinet in Shaun and Lea's room for the first months of his life.
"He will be sleeping in our room during his first six months," reminded Shaun, who was always adamant about following pediatric guidelines. "Other than putting him to sleep on his back, a study showed that room-sharing reduces a baby's risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome by 50%. The American Academy of Pediatrics also recommends it."
"I know," nodded Lea, who rested her hand atop her belly; her hand staying there longer than usual. "He will be sleeping in a crib until he is 18 months...or at least until he finds a way to climb out himself."
"We should also combine the changing table and dresser to save space," suggested Shaun as he examined the measurements of the nursery and most of the furniture on websites like Babylist, Pottery Barn, and Buy Buy Baby. "A tub of diapers and wipes will be placed next to it. We'll store all the spare diapers and wipes in the diaper bag, closet, or bathroom sink."
"Easy peasy. We'll also need a diaper pail," added Lea, smiling and giggling. "It could go right next to the dresser. Should the nursery have a lamp or a nightlight?"
"We'll see. We could use the lamp we still have in the guest room," decided Shaun before moving on to the next thing.
"Should we get a white noise machine?" Lea asked.
"It depends, so we won't find out until after he is born. Some babies don't need one, but some do," pondered Shaun. "If we do get one, it will be portable."
"Agree with you on that," nodded Lea as she looked down at the nursery plan blueprint displayed on the table. "The rocking chair could go somewhere in the corner. We agree that there will obviously be no pillows, crib bumpers, and stuffed animals in the crib, but will the wall be decorated, or will gray paint be enough?"
"He can't be overstimulated," conceded Shaun. "But, some minimal wall art won't be too much. It also can't go over the crib. The crib also won't be near the window."
"Noted," agreed Lea, grateful that she ended up having a baby with a safety-guideline conformist. Her parents would think she and Shaun were too overprotective. "Always following safety guidelines."
"Our son will also need space to play and crawl around," continued Shaun. "The space in his nursery looks small, but..."
"But there is also plenty of space on the patio and in the living room," reassured Lea before getting a little ahead of herself. "We could get a kiddie pool for the patio. We could keep it in a future backyard, too."
Lea could already imagine her son and Morgan's potential, possible child having playdates and playing in the kiddie pool.
"We'll also need something for toy storage," added Shaun. "But, I also do like the idea of a kiddie pool."
After eating dinner and looking at shades of gray paint samples on Home Depot's website, Shaun and Lea settled into bed for the night.
It had been half a week since the scare, and their babymoon was just around the corner, but the thought of how they were so close to being forever childless was frightening.
