Pamela sat on the bunk while she looked at the iron door and she had a blank look on her face. The door opened while the guard entered the room then Daryl and Caroline stood in the doorway. The guard checked the cell then nodded his head and Daryl and Caroline entered the cell.
"Surprised to see us?" Daryl asked.
"If I am going to tell the truth…," Pamela said and Caroline snorted a breath of air. "As I was saying… Yes. I am surprised to see you. Why are you here?"
"We need to wrap our heads around somethin'. If things hadn't fallen apart? Were you really gonna send me and my brother to France?" Caroline asked.
"Or somewhere where your services were required."
"Because we're twins?"
"No. It was because you two were two of my best soldiers."
"Even if you knew we wouldn't be comin' back?" Daryl asked.
"Yes."
They became silent when Caroline thought about Andre and Anton and she sighed.
"Is it true you were in a relationship with Andre Du Monte?" Caroline asked and she saw Pamela's eyes slightly widen.
"How did you learn that information?" Pamela asked.
"Found some photographs of the two of you and his brother, Anton," Daryl said.
"And Anton Du Monte wrote about it in a letter he gave us," Caroline said.
Pamela stayed quiet for a few seconds then sighed, lowering her head.
"Yes. It was true. I was in a relationship with Andre. You have to understand. He is a very charismatic man," Pamela said.
"Was. Walker got him a year ago," Daryl said and the muscles in Pamela's jaw twitched.
"Did you know his father wanted him to break things off with you?" Caroline asked.
"What!? Why!?" Pamela asked with a shocked look.
"Because his father found out about your family's dark past," Daryl said.
"Damn."
"He also wanted Anton to break things off with you instead of him."
"Why would he….? Oh. He didn't want to appear to be a cad."
"Yep," Caroline said with a nod.
"I know you won't believe me. But I am glad the two of you returned unharmed."
"No. You're not," Caroline said and Pamela glared at her. Pamela watched as the guard moved between her and Daryl and Caroline and the guard, Caroline and Daryl headed for the door. The door closed with a loud bang as Pamela picked up the pillow from the bed and tossed the pillow across the room
Gabriel's church – two months later
Gabriel was glad when Daryl and Caroline asked him to officiate their wedding ceremonies. Gabriel found a Catholic wedding ceremony in one of the Bibles they had found and was pleased when Daryl and Caroline agreed to have their weddings on the same day.
Mercer had placed guards outside the church after the church was thoroughly searched for any threats. He also placed guards around the city hall and the building was thoroughly searched as well. The kitchen staff for the reception was not allowed in the building until after the wedding. Neither was the serving staff. All food and drink had been tested and stored in a location only known to Mercer.
Negan was surprised when Daryl asked him to be his best man, but Connor wasn't surprised when Murphy asked him to be his best man.
Maggie and Katherine agreed to be the Matron of Honors for Carol and Caroline. Lydia, Connie, Kelly, Magna, Princess and Yumiko agreed to be the bridesmaids. Gracie and Judith were thrilled when asked to be the junior bridesmaids.
Elijah, Eugene, Aaron, Jeffrey, Mercer and Hornsby agreed to be the groomsmen and Mark, Peter and Chandler liked the idea of being the junior groomsmen.
Nikki was thrilled to be the flower girl and Hershel and RJ liked the idea of being the ring carriers.
Bride's dressing room
Carol looked at her reflection in the full-length mirror as she looked at the cream color gown she was wearing and she held the bouquet of Cherokee roses in her hands. Daryl had gone out the day before to find the roses and her mind replayed the story behind them.
"You look amazing, Mom," startled her as she looked at Henry and Sophia standing behind her in the mirror and she softly smiled.
"Yeah. You look like a princess," Sophia said.
"Thanks," Carol whispered when she thought of something and she looked at Sophia. "You don't mind me marrying Daryl?"
"Nope. Remember when I asked you back at the quarry why he couldn't be my dad."
"Told you the only way that could happen was…"
"Was if Daddy was dead."
Carol nodded then looked at Henry and he barely smiled.
"What about you? Are you ok with me marrying Daryl?" Carol asked.
"Well…. As much as I liked you being married to Dad. I knew you wanted someone else. I was angry at first then I got to know Daryl. Saw how happy you were when you were with him. Saw how sad he was without you. So, yeah, I'm ok," Henry said.
She watched Henry and Sophia fade away as she wiped the tears from her eyes and Carol softly sighed. She thought about the conversation she had with Ezekiel at the welcome home party and he had given her his blessing.
Across the room, Caroline stood in front of the full-length mirror as she looked at the off-white gown she was wearing and Princess had been able to find some curlers to curl Caroline's hair. Caroline thought back to the only time she had curled her hair and a phantom pain moved through her head from the memory of Jessie pulling on her hair while cutting off the curls.
"You look like a damn slut!"
"Go away," Caroline whispered over and over, flexing the fingers of her right hand.
"Don't let her ruin this day for you," startled her and she saw Thomas standing behind her in the mirror.
"Hey, Daddy."
"Hey. Damn. You look amazing," Thomas said with a sad smile. "Wish I could…"
"I know."
"This guy you're marrying…."
"Murphy."
"Yeah. Been talking with Frank. He said Murphy and his brother are dangerous."
"Only to the evil in the world."
"What does that mean?"
Caroline told he a short version of what happened to Connor and Murphy and Thomas' eyes widened.
"Damn."
"Yeah. But I couldn't think of anyone better to look after me. Well… There's Daryl. And you."
"Yeah," Thomas said with a sad smile.
"Shit. Now I know where I get that guilty look from. Daddy, you honestly saved my life. I can never repay you for that."
"Thanks for saying that, Baby Girl."
"Love you."
"Love you, too."
Caroline watched Thomas fade away as she blinked the tears out of her eyes and softly smiled.
Groom's dressing room
Murphy stood in front of the full-length mirror as he looked at his reflection and he thought about the odd dream he and Connor had the night before. Both of them were in a bar. They were drinking and both of them were happy to smoke for the first time in a long time.
"Do you have any idea why we're here?"
"Nope."
"Kind of reminds me of that time back in Boston. Before we got arrested."
"Didn't Rocco show up?"
"Yeah."
They sat at the bar when it felt like it was raining and what happened to them all those years ago happened again. Neither of them could move and they heard heavenly music, singing and they were breathing hard and fast. A heavenly voice spoke to them then they woke up.
"Still thinkin' about th'dream?" startled him as he looked at his father, Noah, standing behind him in the mirror.
"Yeah," Murphy said with a nod. "Is it true? What was said?"
"Considerin' how th'world is now? Aye. It appears so."
"Connor and I are retired?"
"Aye."
"But, in the end, we will still be standin' with th'others."
"Jus' like I am."
"Speakin' of you…. Caroline…."
"Yer ma is givin' me hell about how I acted toward the lass. I was jus' lookin' after you two. And her."
"I bet," Murphy said with a smile. "Caroline is grateful with what you did. I mean about th'letters."
Noah softly smiled as he nodded and Murphy ducked his head down.
"There is no sin with what you did, Lad. You had no idea where she was or if she was even alive. And Jeanie agrees with me," Noah said and Murphy looked at him. "Aye, I met her and th'kids. They send their blessing and love."
"Love you, Da," Murphy said.
"Love you, too," Noah said then Noah faded.
Murphy looked at his reflection again as he smiled and adjusted the suit jacket.
Across the room, Daryl looked in the full-length mirror when he sighed and pressed his lips into a thin line.
"Damn. Look at you," startled him as Merle stood behind him and Merle smiled. "Finally decided to do it, hunh?"
"Do what?" Daryl asked and Merle rolled his eyes.
"Finally marryin' Carol."
"Yeah."
"Sorry that I ain't here to stand with you."
"Hmph."
"You woulda asked me, right? Or would it have been Sheriff Friendly?"
"Depends on which one of you said yes first."
Merle looked at him with a puzzled look on his face then he broke out laughing.
"Shit," Merle said and Daryl smiled. "This guy Caroline's marryin'? Is he good to her?"
"Better than that asshole she met after the world fell."
"He was that bad?" he asked and Daryl nodded. "Hmph."
They stood in silence when Merle smiled and crossed his arms over his chest.
"You better be good to Carol, Little Brother. Or I'll come back and haunt yer ass," he said and Daryl watched him vanish.
"Asshole," Daryl whispered with a small laugh then he placed on the leather vest with the wings on the back before placing on the suit jacket.
Inside the chapel, Gabriel stood at the top of the stairs with Daryl, Negan, Connor and Murphy and the rest of the congregation sat on the pews. Gabriel nodded to Max as she opened the door at the back of the chapel and Daryl and Murphy smiled while Nikki and Dog walked down the aisle.
Nikki was in a white dress with puffy sleeves and a sash around her waist, ankle socks and black Mary Jane shoes. Her hair had been pulled back in a ponytail and she had a crown of flowers on her head. She reached into the wooden basket to remove the flower petals and Dog held the handle of the wooden basket carefully in its mouth. Dog wore what looked like a suit jacket, a white shirt and a black bowtie and the dog wagged its tail back and forth.
"It was my idea for him to carry the basket," Nikki whispered to Murphy after he and Daryl walked down the stairs and Daryl removed the handle of the wooden basket from Dog's mouth. He patted the top of the dog's head and Nikki went to sit next to Anne and Carl on the pew. Dog followed Daryl and Murphy up the stairs and the dog sat between him and Negan.
Max opened the door and RJ and Hershel walked down the aisle. They were both dressed in black suit jackets, pants, sock, black leather belt, black leather shoes, white shirts and black bow ties. Daryl smiled when he saw Hershel had his ballcap on and RJ was wearing Rick's sheriff hat. They carried white silk pillows with the rings on the top in their hands and they handed the pillows to Connor and Negan after they went up the stairs, went down the stairs and went to sit next to Anne and Carl on the pews.
Max opened the door and Judith and Gracie walked down the aisle. Both of them wore off-white dresses, white knee socks and black leather shoes. Their hair was up in soft curls and pinned back with small hair clips and they were carrying bouquets of Cherokee roses.
Daryl watched Judith coming closer as she gently smiled at him then he noticed the slightly stunned look on Chandler's face after Chandler saw Judith. Chandler quickly looked away when he saw the hard look Daryl was giving him and Negan lightly nudged him.
"Easy. No need to roast him for looking," Negan whispered and Daryl nodded.
Max opened the door and Lydia, Connie, Kelly, Magna, Princess and Yumiko headed down the aisle. They were dressed in soft pink, sleeveless dresses, white leather shoes and each of them were carrying bouquets of Cherokee roses. All of them had their hair down and Princess smiled after Mercer gave her a pleased look.
"Ready?" Murphy whispered to Daryl as they looked at the door at the end of the chapel and Daryl nodded.
Max opened the door as the congregation stood and Carol appeared in the doorway. She held the bouquet of Cherokee roses in her hands as she looked straight ahead and Daryl thought he forgot how to breath for a few seconds. She was half-way down the aisle when Jerry and Caroline appeared in the doorway and Murphy's eyes slightly widened at the site of her in her wedding gown.
"Christ," Murphy whispered.
"Lord's name," Connor whispered.
Caroline and Jerry headed down the aisle as Jerry blinked the tears from his eyes and Caroline lightly nudged him. He smiled sweetly at her and Caroline softly laughed. They stopped to let Carol go up the stairs to Daryl and Daryl reached out his left hand. She took hold of his hand as she stood next to him and Daryl looked back at Caroline. She felt the love, joy and happiness coming from her twin as he felt the same coming from her and Jerry led her up the stairs to Murphy. Murphy took hold of her right hand as Jerry went to sit with Nabila and his family on the pew and Gabriel looked at the congregation.
"Good afternoon," Gabriel said and the congregation responded in kind. He started the service while Daryl looked at Carol and he swore she was shimmering in the sunlight coming from the windows. She noticed he was wearing the leather vest with the wings on the back under the suit jacket and he lightly shrugged his shoulders.
Caroline listened to Gabriel as he read the service he had written for the wedding and she looked at Murphy. Murphy saw the leather cord around her neck and she had found something to remove the tarnish from the sliver circlet. His mind replayed their relationship when he remembered giving the cross to her and the sunlight sparkled off the silver circlet.
"Ok. This is going to sound like a part of our romance movie, but…"
"But this is where you want me to keep this with me as a good luck charm. That it will lead me back to you."
"Right."
"This ain't a movie."
"You're right. But I still want you t'keep it,"
"Murphy," cleared his head and Murphy looked at Gabriel.
"What?" Murphy asked and Caroline rolled her eyes.
"He just asked if you want me to be yer wife," she said.
"Oh… Yeah. I do," he said then locked eyes with her. "I really do."
Gabriel nodded when he asked Daryl the same question and Daryl looked deeply into Carol's eyes.
"I do," Daryl said and he swore Carol was blushing.
Gabriel turned to Caroline when he asked Caroline if she wanted Murphy for her husband and Murphy flipped Connor off when Connor told her to say no.
"I do," Caroline said as she looked at Murphy. "I really do."
Gabriel turned to Carol when he asked Carol if she wanted Daryl for her husband and Carol saw the same question in Daryl's worried eyes.
"I do," Carol said and Daryl released the breath he was holding.
Gabriel finished the service as he told Daryl and Murphy to kiss their brides and the cheering filled the church. Dog barked as the congregation laughed and Daryl patted the dog's head.
"I now have the honor in introducing Mister and Mrs. Daryl Dixon and Mister and Mrs. Murphy MacManus," Gabriel said with a grin and Daryl, Carol, Murphy and Caroline turned to face the congregation. Daryl took hold of Carol's right hand as they headed down the stairs and Murphy waited until they were half-way down the aisle before taking hold of Caroline's right hand and they headed down the stairs. They headed for the small room to the left of the chapel and stayed in the room until the congregation left the church.
"They better not toss anything at us when we get outside," Daryl grumbled while they headed for the doorway at the end of the chapel. Carol lightly laughed as they walked outside and Daryl saw the guards standing on each side of the sidewalk.
"Present arms!" Mercer called out and the guards held up their rifles then crossed the tops of the rifles. Mercer nodded as Daryl and Carol walked down the sidewalk and Mercer smiled at Daryl as he walked by. "At ease!"
"Hey!" Caroline called from the top of the stairs and Mercer looked at her.
"Was waiting for you," he said then the guards raised and crossed the tops of the rifles. Murphy held onto Caroline's waist while they walked down the stairs then by the guards and Caroline smiled at Mercer.
City Hall
The sounds of laughter, talking and soft music filled the room while Daryl watched Carol talking with Ezekiel, Mercer and Hornsby and Daryl sipped on the whiskey Connor had brought from Ireland. The soft burn moved down Daryl's throat as he glanced over at the long table with the wedding cake and he frowned. Nikki, Coco, Adam and Jerry's daughter, Meriam, were standing near the table and he walked over to them.
"What are you doin?" Daryl asked and they looked at him.
"We wanna know when we can have some cake," Niki said.
"Want cake," Adam said.
"Cake," Coco said.
"P'ease?" Meriam asked.
"We haven't had dinner yet," Daryl said then looked over at the long table with trays of cookies on it. "But you can each have a cookie."
"Cookie!" Coco said as she bounced up and down on the balls of her feet and he sweetly smiled at her. Memories of Rosita moved through his head as he sighed then he led them toward the long table. He reached for four cookies as he handed the cookies to Adam, Nikki, Coco and Meriam then he handed them a paper napkin.
"Say thank you," Nikki reminded them.
"T'ank you," Adam said.
"T'ank you," Coco said.
"T'ank you," Meriam said.
"You're welcome," Daryl said and he watched Niki leading Adam, Coco and Meriam to the small chairs.
"You're are such a good daddy," made him turn to see Caroline standing next to him and he ducked his head.
"Stop."
"Sorry. Just bein' a bratty little sister," she said with a grin and he snorted a laugh.
"You look amazin'."
"You look pretty good yourself. Are you wearing yer winged vest?"
"Yeah. What happened with Murphy?"
"He was thinkin' about me and our relationship. Why? You thought he was changin' his mind?"
"Yeah."
"Daryl…."
"Sorry."
"Did Mercer say why he had guards all over the place?"
"It was a precaution."
"He really thought Milton would do somethin'?"
"Yeah."
"Humph."
Carol walked over to them as the music changed to a slow song and Caroline noticed the sweet look Daryl was giving his wife.
"Care to dance?" Carol asked.
"Not really good at slow dancin'," Daryl said.
"Then just sway to the music."
She took hold of his right and as they headed for the dance floor and she slid her arms around his waist. He placed his hands on her shoulders and they gently moved side-to-side. He locked eyes with her as she smiled and Daryl leaned down to kiss Carol's lips.
Caroline watched them kissing when she felt someone tap her right shoulder and she turned to see Murphy standing there. He held out his right hand as she took hold of his hand and they went to the dance floor. She held onto his shoulders as he held her close and they moved side-to-side.
"What were you two talkin' about?" Murphy asked.
"He was just worried about why you faded out durin' the service," Caroline said.
"Did he think I was chanin' my mind? I wasn't."
"That's what I told him."
He leaned down to kiss her lips and Caroline slid her arms around his neck.
"Children present!" made Daryl, Carol, Caroline and Murphy move back and laughter filled the air. Murphy glared at Connor as Connor shrugged his shoulders then softly laughed.
Daryl's old apartment
Caroline snuggled against Murphy's left side as her head rested on his chest and his heart thrummed steadily in her ear. He made a deep sigh as she looked up at him and he smiled at her.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"Jus' thinkin' about our movie. Is it over? Most romantic movies end with the couple gettin' back together and gettin' married," he said.
"I told you before. What we have ain't a movie. So… No. It's not over. But I do like the idea of us havin' a happy endin'."
"Me, too."
"And you're sure you and Connor are retired?"
"Yeah. We are."
"What are you two gonna do then?"
"Connor wants t'open a school where he can teach th'kids how t'fight. Not jus' those things out there, but anyone who comes their way. Or not fight 'em."
"And you?"
"Was thinkin' about takin' that art teachin' job Ezekiel told me about. He says there are some art books in th'school library I could use and they have art supplies. What are you and Daryl gonna do?"
"Mercer wants us to take over his old job and Vickers' job."
"You're gonna be cops?"
"In a way, yeah."
"Are you gonna take the job?"
"Thinkin' about it."
They became quiet as he felt her fingers moving along his left side and she kissed his chest.
"I love you," she said.
"I know," he said.
"Hey. That's my line," she said while carefully climbing on top of him and he smiled, pulling her down for a kiss.
Carol's apartment
Daryl stood by the window while he looked out at the darkness and he folded his arms over his chest.
"Are you coming to bed or not?" Carol asked. She was resting on her right side as she could just see his naked form in the darkness. She was grateful that the window came up to his stomach and she placed her head in her right hand. He turned then walked back to the bed and he slid under the bedding.
"Sorry," he said and she carefully crawled on top of him. He slid his hands up her arms and she held onto his shoulders.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothin's wrong. Just tryin' to wrap my head around the fact I finally got my happy endin'."
"But something's missing. Someone."
"You mean Rick and Michonne?"
"Yep."
"Guess so," he said and his hands moved up to her shoulders. She shivered as he smiled and she could just see the look in his eyes. "Wanna screw around?"
"Only if you take your damn time."
"Ain't no reason to hurry."
She kissed his lips as he held her against him, carefully moved until she was under him and he looked down at her.
"Love you, Pookie," she said.
"Love you, too, Muffin," he said.
"Muffin!?"
"You don't like it?"
She could just see the hurt in his eyes and she brushed some hair out of his face.
"I love it," she said and she kissed his lips.
