Growing Pains

Chapter 28: A Bright Future

Danny, Jazz and their friends were on their way home. All of them relieved the nightmare was over.

"I'm so ordering a pizza with everything I like on it and none of you can stop me!..."Danny said, eager for a typical junk food that was appropriate for his age.

"Who says I will? After this, I could use enough junk food to put me in a coma..."Jazz said, parking her car.

"Same here..."Tucker said, and Sam nodded.

Once they got out of the car, Danny quickly picked up his phone and placed the order.

"At least it was fun to see what I'd be like in the future... not that I had time to enjoy it for long..." Sam said before glaring at Tucker, who grinned nervously.

As soon as Danny and the others arrived to Fenton Works, a familiar RV showed up and parked on the street.

"Kids! We're home!..." Maddie went, stepping out of the RV.

"We made it back! Also, gonna need help with a yard sale tomorrow so we can save up for the bill! I'm still $500 short..." Jack went, sounding bitter about the last part.

As Maddie scowled at him for saying that, Danny and Jazz approached their parents, seeing that nothing has changed with them.

"Good to see you, Mom and Dad..." Jazz said, knowing that it was pure luck they weren't present for what happened.

"How was your time? Were you both being mature?..." Maddie asked, unaware of the irony of her words.

"You could say that..." Danny said in an ironic tone, not wanting to get into details.

His parents soon smiled.

"So, what's this we heard about Danny Phantom apparently having an older brother? What did we miss?..." Jack asked, looking ready to hunt him too.

That worried Team Phantom, not wanting them to go on a wolf goose chase.

"Uh... he's probably gone to Italy..." Danny said, and his parents sent him a strange look.

"Odd of you to say Italy so specifically..."Maddie commented, raising a brow.

"How do you know that?..."Jack asked, confused.

"Uh...I overheard him saying something like that when he flew by. I guess even ghosts like pasta..."Danny lied, while his mother frowned.

However, his parents seemed to buy it.

"Well, it's a shame we can't go after him now since he's in another country...but I don't blame a ghost for wanting to haunt there instead of here..." Maddie said.

"Yeah, it's a shame that it might be a while before we find him, given we had to cancel our family trip..." Jack said, still bitter about the bill that they have to pay.

"Wait, what?..." Jazz asked, and her parents cringed.

"What happened?..."She asked, sending them a critical look.

"Long story... one that ended with our insurance refusing to cover us if your father ever causes an accident when he drives out of state again..." Maddie grumbled before rolling her eyes at Jack, who grinned sheepishly.

As the two re-entered the house, that left Sam an opportunity to speak to Danny on something. As Danny's parents went to the basement to unpack their stuff, the goth girl approached Danny.

"So, how did it feel?..." Sam asked, curious.

"You got aged up and down too, remember..."Danny pointed out, but she shook her head.

"I meant getting more powerful. Very more powerful..." Sam clarified. "And gorgeous..."She mentally added.

Danny, unaware of her thoughts, answered earnestly as possible.

"It felt... I'm not sure. Although... while I'm happy to see what kind of person I grow up to be, I'm thankful to do it the natural way. No rush..."He said, being sincere.

"Okay... but... maybe rush a little?..." Sam asked, noticing all eyes were on her. "I mean... to get stronger! That's the only reason I'd suggest... one and only reason..." She ended that with a nervous laugh.

Tucker and Jazz saw through her words, but Danny was oblivious.

"Sorry... but this is one topic where my decision is final..." Danny said, with a relieved smile as he re-entered the house.

Jazz and Tucker followed, both sending Sam disapproving looks, while Sam herself sighed bitterly.

"Hooray..." She went weakly.

Ironic, she normally was against fawning over one's good looks, and yet this was a situation she wished that handsome visage remained.

Meanwhile

Ember was in her realm, still thinking over what had just happened.

She thought back to the last few days, from seeing Danny's older form, to teaming up with her and helping him change back...to getting ice cream with him of all things and even ending it with a kiss.

"What a day..."Ember said, as she sighed.

There was a smile on her face. She recalled her time with Danny and felt joy. She pulled out her phone and typed his number.

During that time, she convinced Danny to exchange contact info with her and he surprisingly obliged.

Sweet of him.

"Baby Pop..."Ember said as she decided to send him a message.

She quickly typed it, sent it and waited for his response.

"I hope he answers soon..."She said, as she smiled.

Little did she know, he would respond quickly.

With Danny

Danny and the others were finally able to relax after all the stress.

"I so miss just being my normal age..."Danny said.

"Yeah, normal is so great..."Sam said, sarcasm so evident only a clueless person could fail to notice.

"At least now you'll get to see him grow into that age the old fashioned way..."Tucker said, getting a dirty look from her.

Danny wondered what that meant, but decided to ignore it. He went to the kitchen to get some soda and chips. However, that is when he received a text message.

"Huh?..."He said, when he pulled out his phone.

Once he saw who it was, he let out a slight smile.

"Ember sent me a text..."He said, as he checked the text she sent him.

"Hey, Baby Pop, thought I'd check to make sure you're home and safe so I can look forward to clobbering or seeing you later..."Was read out loud by the ghost boy.

Once he was done, Danny smiled slightly at that.

"Huh...I'll give her this much...she's making it easy to forget that we were once enemies..."He said with some fondness, before he began to type his own response.

"I'm fine... thanks for asking in your own unique way..."Danny typed out before hitting sent.

With that, she smiled and nodded.

Unknown to the ghost boy, Sam, who had been on her way to the kitchen to get some water, saw all of this. She frowned, and shook her head.

"I can't take this. I don't have the energy for this..."Sam said bitterly as she walked away, not wanting to deal with this right now.

She would deal with Ember later.

She left, saying nothing else. She just wanted to put all of this behind her now.

Back in the Ghost Zone

Ember got a text on her phone.

She saw that it was a reply from Danny and quickly read it. Once she was done, she smiled.

"Aw, Baby Pop. I knew that you cared..."She said, both playful and affectionately.

She read his response and found this sweet, to be honest.

The ghost rockstar felt his spectral heart beat faster. She typed, sending another response before putting her phone away.

In a good mood, she began to strum her guitar a bit in the privacy of her realm, only to hear a knock on her door. Ember stopped strumming, annoyed.

"Oh, who is it?!..."Ember snapped.

"Who do you think? It's Kitty..."Was heard on the other end.

Ember opened the door, took in a deep breath, and let her green haired friend in.

"I'm guessing you're here to talk?..." Ember asked.

"That's the idea..." Kitty said, as she floated inside the realm.

"So..." Ember said as she closed the door and crossed her arms.

"So..." Kitty said, awkwardly playing with her hair slightly.

Both of them were silent for a while.

"Sorry..." They said in unison.

"I... shouldn't have picked a fight with you..." Ember said.

"Likewise, we shouldn't let a boy get between us..." Kitty said before smiling wistfully at the ceiling.

"Even one with arms like those..."She began, recalling how Danny had looked.

"And that chest..." Ember said, with the same facial expression.

"The way his suit hugged his body..." Kitty went, almost drooling.

"Those shoulders..." Ember went, blushing slightly.

Both of them cleared their throats to stop that before a buzz was heard.

"That your phone?..." Kitty asked, and Ember flinched.

She recalled what she sent to Danny, and didn't want to answer it in front of her best friend.

"Uh... later..." Ember went, avoiding eye contact.

Her friend raised a brow at her reaction. Kitty saw her phone on the counter and walked to it.

"You're not gonna answer?..." Kitty went as she picked it up.

"No don't!..."Ember yelled, but it was too late.

Kitty picked up the phone, and read out loud the message.

"Y'know flattery won't get you out of that Thermos if you cause trouble. Play nice and I can just walk you home... winky smile?" Kitty asked, reading it out loud as a mortified Ember looked away.

"Oh crud..."The ghostly diva said, knowing that the damage was done.

Kitty realized what this must have meant, and gasped happily.

"You're in love with Danny?!..." Kitty asked, pointing at her in almost accusation.

Ember flinched, and got defensive.

"Kitty, quiet! The whole ghost zone doesn't need to hear you!..."Ember yelled, while her friend giggled.

"So, it is true..."Kitty said, and the ghostly diva huffed up.

"We're not in love! It's more... good guy and bad girl flirting, that's just it. Nothing serious, honest!..." Ember insisted, but her friend didn't buy it.

The ghostly biker babe smiled and couldn't resist teasing her about this.

"That sounds like you're into him...~" Kitty went in a sing song way, annoying her friend even more now.

"Am not!..."Ember said, but Kitty sent her a look.

"Not...completely...I mean...I'm just trying to wear him down into ruling the world with me... he's powerful so he'd be a fine king... that's all..." Ember insisted.

The green haired ghoul giggled at this, seeing right through her best friend.

"Well... you best win him over soon... because I decided that if Johnny doesn't shape up in 10 years... I'm going to take Danny for myself/." Kitty went.

"Huh?!..." Ember went in anger, and possibly jealous.

Kitty smirked at this reaction.

"Someone's jealous..."She commented.

"I'm not jealous...but...I call dibs on Baby-Pop. Plus, you still have Johnny, right..."Ember said, looking stuborn.

"Knew it..."Kitty thought.

"Technically, but he knows he's on thin ice..."Kitty said, but she saw the expression on her best friends face.

She decided to be frank with her.

"Look, Ember...if it was his spooky friend, that huntress, or that girl I had to overshadow for days, I'll be more than happy to steal him. If it's you, I'll back off... slightly. Best make sure you're both in love with each other by then..." Kitty went, being half serious right now

With a wink, she left Ember's domain, leaving the rocker huffing.

"In love? Yeah right..." She muttered before looking at her phone and smiling. "Not that I totally hate the idea thought..."She admitted to herself.

The ghost diva then went back to texting the ghost boy that she recently become close too, feeling something for him what wasn't close to hate.

Not by a long shot.

Later

At Sam's House

Sam was in her room now, brooding in the dark. More so than usual.

She was still ticked off over an "unfortunate development" in her best friend's love life and didn't want to see anybody take advantage of him.

Or take him away from her, but things seem to be going from bad to worse for her.

"I can't believe this. Danny went on a date with Ember and my mom was unknowingly hitting on him. Why does stuff like this always happen to me?..."Sam grumbled, as she nearly tore her pillow in half.

This is the worst and weirdest night of my life... She thought.

Sam heard a knock on her door and frowned.

"Go away!..."Sam yelled.

"No. I need to speak with you, young lady..."Pamela said, as she opened the door.

She entered the room uneasily as she had something very serious to say.

"You could do it through the door..." Sam grumbled but her mother insisted.

The redhead, having had time to think clearly, recalled what happened earlier and wanted to voice her concerns.

"Sam, I think we need to talk..."Pamela said, while her daughter refused to even look at her right now.

"I don't want to talk to you. Get out!..."She said in an acidic way.

"Look, I understand that you're upset..."Pamela tried, but her daughter wouldn't listen.

"You were willing to cheat on Dad with a guy old enough to be my brother! How could you do that?!..."Sam said, upset with her.

Pamela cringed at her words before conceded.

"I don't know, honey but I am so, so sorry. I wasn't willing to cheat on your dad but I let myself get distracted by an admittedly gorgeous face. I know it was an awful thing that I did. I never meant to try and steal him from you..."The redhead said, unaware that she was just digging herself deeper.

Sam heard this and sent her an incredulous look, seeing her mother seeing things different.

"Is that what you think? You almost "stole" him from me? Are you kidding? You couldn't steal him from me!..."Sam said, not believing what her mother had just said.

Her mother heard this and frowned. Pamela still felt some attraction and belief of her desirability as a woman, she couldn't keep herself from acting like that.

"Well, I am quite experienced in the ways of how to talk to men, Sam. If I wanted him, I could have him..."Pamela said, her ego inflated.

Her daughter, however, has had enough of her ego and delusions and decided to read the riot act.

"You really think you stood a chance?! Look at you! You're old! You're way out of his age range!..."Sam said, offending her mother again.

"Samantha. Now-..."Pamela was cut off when her daughter yelled.

"Shut up! You had NO chance! He saw you as an old woman! OLD! As in NOT DESIRABLE TO A GUY IN HIS TWENTIES!..."Sam shouted.

"Don't you take that tone with me, Missy!..."Pamela said, scolding her despite the situation.

"Even IF I wanted him in that way, which I don't, you couldn't get anywhere with him! EVER! Out of the two of us, I'm the only one who actually stands something that resembles a chance! Even if there is a ten year age gap between us, I'd only have to wait four years but you have NO CHANCE! YOU'RE WAY OLDER THAN HIM! YOU'RE OLD ENOUGH TO HAVE GIVEN BIRTH TO HIM!..."Sam yelled, her emotions making her forget her mother didn't know Danny was Dante.

"Don't you dare speak to me like that!..."Pamela yelled, her desire to make amends lost in anger.

Sam did not back down.

"You don't seem to get how angry I can be! Go away! Now!..."Sam yelled as she grabbed a nearby lamp and crushed it with her bare hands.

"Oh my gosh!..."Pamela exclaimed, disturbed.

"Don't toy with me! He told me you made him very uncomfortable and he doesn't even wanna come back to his house if he ever comes back! SO GET! OUT!..."Sam yelled at her in an angry and almost deranged manner.

Pamela stepped back from her angry daughter, nervous and afraid right now.

"I...uh...I see that you just need some space and...we'll buy you a new lamp...bye..."She said as she stepped out of the room.

"JUST LEAVE!..."Sam yelled, throwing the remains of said lamp at the door.

Once the door was closed, the goth girl was angry. Too angry to care.

"I'm going to get grounded for that... but it was worth it..." Sam thought, going back to skulking.

With Pamela

The middle aged mother had just fled her daughters room with her tail between her legs.

"That girl, she's spent too long with those boys..."She said, wondering what was wrong with her daughter.

However, she ended up running into her husband, who made it clear that he overheard everything.

"She's angry, but I don't blame her for once!..." Jeremy was heard shouting.

His wife heard this and frowned, hating that she was still being seen as in the wrong.

"You're taking her side?!..." Pamela asked, angry at her husband.

"Yes, I am. This is one time I can't blame her for her attitude..."Jeremy said, unwilling to mince words.

As they kept arguing in the hallway, Sam and Ida noticed it.

Sam peeked out her door, seeing grandmother watching these events unfold. It was awful.

"Ugh... this is almost punishment for wishing my parents weren't so peppy all the time..." Sam grumbled.

Sam peeked out her door, seeing grandmother watching these events unfold. It was awful.

They were loud, aggressive and unfiltered in their words.

"Ugh... this is almost punishment for wishing my parents weren't so peppy all the time..." Sam grumbled.

"It's not as rare as you think, Bubeleh..."Ida said, as she rode her scooter towards her.

The parents didn't notice them as they kept arguing, too absorbed with their own petty problems to notice other family members.

"I don't see why you have to be so angry about this!…"Pamela yelled, not understanding her husband's feelings.

"Because I was afraid he'd take you away from me!…"Jeremy blinked with a red face.

Sam and Ida mimicked his action, minus the color, as they watched the mother stare blankly at the man.

To their surprise, Pamela smirked, giggling innocently, unnerving her daughter and mother at the same time.

"Oh, Jeremy. I never notice how cute you are when you get all angry and huffy like that..."She said.

Jeremy blinked before he realizes what she said. He struggled to find a response.

"Really?..."He asked, smiling and feeling better.

"I do..."Pamela said, and to Sam's surprise, Jeremy smiled.

A really big smile.

It was then their hostility disappeared.

"Oh, Pamela..."Jeremy said as he hugged her.

"I'm so sorry, Honey. I guess I just wanted to make you out of jealous and got carried away. I'm sorry..."Pamela apologized.

"I see. Just don't do it again...and maybe I could go back to working out again..."Jeremy said.

"Oh, Jeremy. I love you..."Pamela said, smiling.

The two parents hugged and kissed. Almost like their anger never happened, they were as lovey dovey as before.

"What's happening?…"Sam backed away, going behind her grandmother for safety.

Ida sighed, familiar with this.

"Ugh, not again. This is her attempt to spice up their marriage..."The old lady said, shaking her head as she went to her room.

"Huh?..." Sam asked while confused.

"Let's just say you shouldn't be an only child if they weren't so careful..." Ida said. "I really hope you don't turn out like either of them..."She said, being brutally honest before she rode away on her scooter.

Sam watched as her parents made up, causing her to gag momentarily. However, she hoped this meant that her mother would get over her infatuation with "Dante" and things would be back to normal.

"At least they stopped..." She muttered before shutting her door.

Unfortunately, the sounds continued. It took hours before sleep finally brought her salvation. This was a night she wishes she could forget.

"I just hope that my mom never sees Danny again when he does become an adult..."The goth girl muttered, hating all of this.

She blasted the music in her room at full volume to drown out the unwanted noise, all the while hoping that things will settle down and she'll be able to fix her own issues with her friend in time.

The Next Day

Danny was home, enjoying himself. More than usual.

Today was a surprisingly good day.

Both Miss Tesslaff and Ishiyama were absent today, the substitute gym teacher was more laid back and the students didn't have to experience such brutal coaching, which was a plus. Plus, Dash was also surprisingly harmless today.

Apparently, his mother chewed him out a lot yesterday and threatened to ground him if he got in trouble again and the jock wasn't even willing to risk getting caught bullying his usual targets today.

Another major plus.

In addition, there were also no ghost attacks and Vlad was absent, no doubt still dealing with Helena. Which Danny hoped would last for a long time, though he knew that he'd have to be realistic with his hopes.

"I give it a week before he's back..."Danny thought, figuring Vlad would be back to normal by then as well since he always finds a way to come back to cause trouble.

However, he would worry about that later.

Right now, he had the house to himself, as his parents left to go try and "reason" with their insurance company and Jazz was busy tutoring some jocks again.

Danny felt sorry for his sister having to put up with their idiocy , knowing she did not enjoy that.

After school let out, he went home and got himself some snacks. He surrounded himself with cookies and ice cream, things he'd never get to enjoy as an adult without eyes on him. He also put on all sorts of teen movies, anime and even a few cartoons, wanting to enjoy the rest of his youth and teenagehood while he still can.

"This is the life. This is how it should be for now..."He thought, glad it'd take a few years before he had to deal with adulthood again.

The dark haired boy let out a relaxed sigh, feeling at ease. The best part, ironically, was that no girls outside of Sam, Jazz and briefly Valerie paid attention to him today.

Sure, he got a text from Ember, which was good but he didn't have to worry about someone suddenly ambushing him or some jealous boyfriend. He welcomed ghosts trying to fight him over that.

"Who knew being ignored and NOT being popular could be so relaxing?..."Danny said, happy that things are back to normal.

He decided to turn on a movie to further enjoy his return to youth. As he enjoyed a Dead Teacher movie marathon, the ghost boy smiled.

"At least the whole Dante thing is over and I won't have to deal with anything like that for at least a decade. I'll probably be better at handling it then..."He thought, thinking that it was over and he was free.

It was only over for him.

In Italy

A private plane had just landed near the capital and its sole passenger just exited.

"Good... finally... took you long enough..." She muttered.

Pulling her luggage, Evergreen smiled at her location. The place she was lied to about where the object of her affections went.

"Here I am! Italy! My Dante is here, I can feel it! So... when can I visit the Eiffel Tower?..." She asks, looking around.

"Never... that's France..."Miss Romano's voice went, having arrived on a different plane.

Turning her head, the two rivals glared at each other.

"What are YOU doing here?!..."Miss Evergreen screeched at her.

"I'd ask you to figure it out... but your lack of knowing something as basic as where the Eiffel Tower is tells me you'd never figure it out on your own..."Miss Romano said in a snobbish way.

"Well, I'm not letting you take my Dante from me! Go home!..."The beauty queen shouted at her.

"So you CAN put two and two together. You made it past Elementary School, congrats..."Miss Romano said sarcastically, even fake clapping.

The beauty queen glared at that, seeing a rival that she would find herself competing with.

"Mock all you want, but Dante will be mine! I'm not leaving Italy until I find him!..."Miss Evergreen shouted.

"Me neither! So bring it on!..."Miss Romano stated, closing her fists.

Both women went straight into town, unaware their target is nowhere near Italy.

In fact, he was nowhere in Europe at all

Back in Amity Park

Danny laid on his couch, relaxing and enjoying himself. He just finished eating some pizza, and his movie marathon, and was just enjoying a lazy afternoon of his life back to normal.

"Never thought I'd be so happy to have girls ignore me..." He thought.

Although relieved to be back to normal, he thought back to his older self. In particular his outfit.

He found himself recalling the belt, the streaks on his arms, the changes to his gloves. It was like his current suit somehow evolved. Retaining a simple yet memorable look, he wasn't sure how his suit would change but knew at least it looked more heroic that the other suit of the other 10 years older version of himself.

It was then he decided to doze of.

"Hmm... it's too bad I never figured out what those buttons on my gloves were for..." Danny said, as he looked up.

He figured he'd find out later as he drifted to sleep.

All that mattered now... was that he was back to normal and was at least relieved to know what he'll be like in a decade.

10 years later

The now adult Danny Phantom groaned as he felt his mouth go dry. Fighting ghosts for more than 2 hours has made him parched.

"Best summon that drink I had stored..." He said as he pressed a button, making a Fenton Thermos appear.

"Wrong one..." He pressed it again, making a toy robot appear. "Nope..." He repeated the process, making a swimsuit magazine appear, making him turn red. "Not that..." He repeated it again, making a 2 liter bottle of water appear.

"There we go..." He said, taking the bottle and drinking it before recalling something he said in his youth.

"Huh... so that's what they're for..."He said, before he took another sip.

He then got a call on his phone. Turning on the camera, he saw who it was.

"Danny?..." Jazz went, with a smile on her face.

"Jazz? What's up?..."He asked, wondering why she was calling him.

"Danielle and I are getting groceries for Mom and Dad's anniversary dinner. You coming?..."She asked.

"I will. Ember's been spotted downtown, going to apprehend her now..."Danny said with an even bigger smile.

"Ah, so that's why your suit is so nicely pressed today..." Jazz joked.

"Hilarious..." Danny said with an eyeroll and a small smile.

"If only you could reform her and bring her to the dinner in time as your date. She'd make a great Mrs. Phantom if you put the time into her..."His sister said, knowing how attracted they've become to each other over the years.

"True... but for now... we're just casually comic book complicated, nothing more...or boyfrenemy and girlfrenemy as Tucker once called it. Talk later..." He said upon hanging up, going to deal with his foe, who was also someone he clearly had a mutual attraction towards.

He knew Jazz wouldn't believe a word he said, but despite the complexity of their relationship, there was something about it that was almost too enticing to give up.

Almost.

Flying through the skies, the ghost man was ready to begin another dance with the rockstar ghost.

"Maybe one day…one day…"Danny muttered to himself, contemplating the idea of rocking not only Ember's world, but perhaps her life.

Like he said, maybe one day. The two met up once again.

Ember had a new look over the years, wearing a dark blue leotard with thigh-length boots and bicep-length gloves, along with a belt like her old one. Her hair was as fiery as ever. one that matched her new guitar that resembled her old one, only now silver.

The ghost rocker saw him and smiled. This was just an excuse to get the object of her desires out in the open.

"Hey there, Baby Pop..." Ember said.

"I'm in my 20's now, for real this time. Can you stop calling me that?..." Danny asked, smiling slightly.

"Nope..." Ember said as she approached.

The ghostly man sent her an amused look, before speaking up again.

"So... care to reform now? I can use a date for my parents' anniversary dinner..."He said, offering his hand.

"You'd have to be more... enticing than that..." Ember said as she traced the symbol on his chest.

"Was worth a shot..." Danny said with a shrug as a smile.

"Yeah... I'll pummel you with my guitar... maybe after this..."Ember said, her face getting in his.

The two ghosts shared a kiss, showing that their attraction has increased over the years. If it weren't for them being hero and villainess, one would say they were in a committed relationship.

They remained this way, not even bothering to fight like they intended. Ember just wanted to embrace the boy turned man that she's grown so attached to, seeing him grow quite nicely.

Clearly, there were still some growing pains for Danny, but this wasn't one of them.

Not a pain at all.

"So...second thoughts about reforming and going steady?..."Danny asked, wrapping his arms around her.

Ember thought about it and smiled playfully.

"Eh...I'll think about it. Might wanna hold on tighter next time..."She said before pushing him back

The ghostly rockstar then flew away and waved to him, leaving the ghostly man with a grin.

He let out a low whistle, an infatuated look on his face.

"She makes it hard to hate her..."He said as he went after her, another game of cat and mouse between them.

Growing up naturally had its perks, and this is one of them.

Especially when it comes to love.
