It was the night before Christmas Eve, and Haley and Lucas were cleaning up the cafe before going home. Tomorrow, Haley would be spending her first Christmas Eve with Nathan and his family, and she was really looking forward to it. She was also excited to finally get to meet Nathan's mother, Deb, whom Nathan had spoken highly of. However, Nathan rarely spoke about his father, which wasn't surprising given what Haley knew about him from both Lucas and Nathan.
After Haley wiped down the last table and set the chairs upside down, she looked over at Lucas."So, are you and Peyton coming over to Nathan's mom's for Christmas Eve dinner?" She asked as she walked over to the counter and sat down in one of the bar stools.
Lucas shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know," he said. "Deb did invite us. But I told her that we'll think about it." He added as he also took a seat beside Haley.
Haley said, "I thought you liked Deb, what's going on, Luke?" with concern.
Nothing, of course. I mean, Deb and I get along great. It's just if we actually go to her house and Dan is there, I am gonna end up losing my temper and knocking the guy out.
" You really don't think Dan is actually going to show up tomorrow?"
" Honestly Hales, I really hope he doesn't. But then again I wouldn't put it past him."
Well, even if he does show up tomorrow, I'm sure you can avoid him," Haley suggested as she shrugged her shoulders a little.
" I hope so, come on we should get out of here. Besides if I end up home late again, Peyton's going to kill me." Lucas said with a chuckle.
Haley laughed a little shaking her head as she followed Lucas out of the cafe as she locked up. Haley is looking forward for tomorrow night and just Lucas she's also hoping that Dan doesn't show up either. The last thing she needs is for Nathan to get into a fight with his father.
While Lucas and Nathan were sitting in the living room watching the NBA game on ESPN, Haley and Peyton were in Deb's kitchen helping her out with the Christmas Eve dinner. So far, everything was going great, and hopefully, Dan wouldn't show up.
Haley had been feeling nervous about meeting Nathan's mom before coming over tonight. Mainly because she wanted to make a good impression on Deb and she wanted Deb to like her. Luckily for Haley, Deb immediately welcomed her into her home with open arms.
Haley was in the middle of pouring marshmallows onto the sweet potatoes before putting them into the oven when she heard Deb call her name. "Hmm?" she asked as she put a few more marshmallows on top.
" I was just wondering if there's any wedding bells in your and Nathan's future?" Deb asked with a grin as she took a sip of her wine. Deb is happy that Nathan finally found someone and she's glad that someone is Haley. Deb never really liked Rachel and she knew Rachel was gonna break her son's heart. The moment Deb met Haley tonight she liked her right away.
Haley hesitated for a moment before answering. "Um, I don't know," she said. "We haven't really talked about it." She shrugged her shoulders. Of course, Haley would love to be Nathan's wife someday; the conversation just hadn't come up yet.
Meanwhile, while Nathan and Lucas were watching the game, Lucas took a sip of his beer as he looked over at Nathan."So how are you and Haley doing, now that Rachel is gone?"A couple of days later, after Nathan and Haley showed Rachel the DNA results, she finally left Tree Hill for good.
Everything is going great between us so far," Nathan answered as he leaned forward and grabbed his beer. "I sorta have a surprise for Haley tomorrow." He said as he also took a drink of his beer and then sat back against the couch.
What's the surprise?", Lucas asked eagerly.
Nathan shook his head. "Nice try, Luke, but there's no way I'm telling you."
" Oh, come on man. Why not? I'm your brother. You can trust me Nate." Lucas said with a smirk as he waits for Nathan to tell him what kind of surprise he has for Haley.
Nathan sighed for a moment as he looked at Lucas."Alright fine, if I tell you my surprise, you gotta promise me that you won't tell anyone. Especially Peyton."Nathan said seriously. He knew how Peyton was, and if Lucas told Peyton his secret, Peyton would go straight to Haley and tell her.
"I promise," Lucas said, shaking his head.
Standing up, Nathan reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box. Slowly opening it, he revealed a very nice, very expensive diamond engagement ring.
Lucas said, "Nathan, that's an engagement ring."
Nathan nodded his head as he shut the box and placed it back into his pocket. "I'm planning on asking Haley to marry me, Luke," he said. "It's my Christmas present to her." Nathan and Haley had been together for almost a year now, and they had gone through a lot together. Nathan loved Haley, and he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.
Wow, that's a huge step for you, little brother," Lucas said. He knew that Nathan had taken many huge steps in his life. But marriage was definitely a huge step, especially for Nathan. Lucas wished him good luck; he knew that Nathan would do everything he could to make his new wife happy.
Nathan nods his head in agreement. "Believe me, I know it is."
" Got any ideas on how you're going to ask her?"
Nathan grins as he nods head." Yeah, I do. I'm going to ask her tomorrow morning over breakfast." He answered as he took a sip of his beer. Tomorrow morning Nathan is planning on making a special Christmas breakfast in bed for Haley and that's when he's going to ask her hand in marriage.
The next morning, Haley was awakened by the smell of breakfast and fresh coffee filling the air. As she noticed Nathan wasn't in bed with her, Haley looked over at her bedroom door and saw him walking into the room with a tray of food and coffee. "Breakfast in bed?" she asked with a smile, sitting up straight and leaning back against the headboard.
Well of course," Nathan answered as he placed the tray over her legs. Leaning down, he kissed her softly and gently. Smiling against her lips, he said, "Merry Christmas, Haley." As he pulled back, he smiled at her.
"Merry Christmas, Nathan," Haley replied as she started to eat her breakfast. As she placed the egg onto her fork, she hummed softly, savoring the taste as she swallowed. Nodding her head in agreement, she said, "Seriously, Nathan, these eggs are really good." Taking a sip of her coffee, she noted that it was still hot.
Nathan chuckled as he nods his head." Well thanks Hales, but they're just eggs. They're really not that hard to make." He said with a laugh.
" Well, whatever all I'm saying is that they're really good." Haley said as she finished her breakfast and coffee. " So what time should we head back towards your mom's?" Last night Deb had asked her and Nathan if they would come back today for presents and both Haley and Nathan agreed they would.
Soon," Nathan said as he placed a small jewelry box with a bow on it down on the breakfast tray. "Merry Christmas, Hales."
What are you up to, Nathan Scott?" Haley asked as she raised her eyebrow for a moment; she couldn't help but feel a little suspicious at this point.
Nathan smiled and said, "Just open it."
As she slowly opened the box, Haley gasped when she noticed a diamond engagement ring. She looked over at Nathan, trying to speak. "Nathan...I..." Haley tried to find the words to say, but no words came out; she was shocked and speechless.
Getting down on one knee, he took the ring out of the box. Looking into her eyes, he said, "Haley James, you're an amazing and wonderful woman, that I have ever met. You're so warm and caring. You've been by my side through the whole Rachel and DNA thing. Supported me when I took the test. You're my rock and the love of my life. Haley James, will you marry me?" Nathan asked with a huge grin on his face.
Upon hearing Nathan's proposal, Haley could feel a tear coming down her face as she began to remember how close she had been to getting married before when David asked her to marry him, and how she never truly gotten the chance due to what happened between them. However, Haley also realized that Nathan is not David and she's not in love with David, but rather, she's in love with Nathan. Nodding her head, Haley gave him his answer. "Yes, I will marry you."
Nathan let out a breath as he slid the ring onto her finger. He then leaned forward and kissed her passionately and deeply. As he held her face in his hands, he smiled against her lips before he slowly pulled away. "I love you."
"I love you too," she whispered as she returned the kiss with equal passion and love, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Always and forever." Haley said as she moaned softly against his lips. She had always thought they'd get engaged someday; she never thought it would be today. This was the perfect Christmas morning.
