Kiawe hurried to his side of the arena. Due to the upset that Max and Iris had previously caused the schedule was a bit behind, making Kaiwe and his opponent, Gary, have to speed down the hallways for their battle. Once they reached the platforms, the referee wasted no time getting the battle started.
"The three on three battle between Kiawe and Gary is about to begin! No substitutions, the match is over when one trainer has no more Pokemon or if one trainer forfeits! Trainers let out your first Pokemon!"
"Salazzle, lets go!" From Kiawe's PokeBall popped out a sleek black salamander Pokemon with a purple belly, standing on her hind legs. Glancing across the field to her opponent, she gave a smirk.
"Electivire lets go!" On Gary's end, a large yellow bipedal pokemon with thick black stripes appeared, two long black tails peeking out behind his back.
"Let the battle between Electivire and Salazzle Begin!"
"Fake Out Salazzle!" Salazzle moved swiftly, sliding across the ground and popping right in front of Electivire before he could react. Claws pulsing white, Salazzle clapped her claws together, causing shock waves to fling Electivire backwards, and causing him to flinch. Taking the opportunity, Kiawe called out his next move. "Dragon Pulse!" A multicolored beam built up in Salazzle's mouth, before launching outwards, taking the shape of a dragon before striking Electivire.
Electivire cried out as he took the attack, forcing himself to stand, though shaky from the back to back attacks. Gary bit his lip in frustration. "Quick, use Thunder!" Yellow energy built up between the horns on Electivire's head before shooting off in thick strands of electricity, striking Salazzle and causing her to slide backwards, crying out as she was shocked. "Now move in with Iron Tail!" Electivire's dual tails lit up before turning into a metallic silver.
"Dodge!" Electivire took off running, swinging his steel tails around as he tried to hit the dodging Salazzle. Salazzle was stalled momentarily due to lingering shocks from Thunder, and both steel tails slammed into her, dealing double damage that caused her to slide back. "Quick, use Sludge Wave!"
"Don't let her attack! Used Thunder Punch!"
Salazzle pulled herself up, ready to spin and send a wave of poison sludge at her opponent, but Electivre was too quick, his fist already cackling with electricity as he punched her, sending her sliding back before she passed out.
"Salazzle is unable to battle! Will Trainer Kiawe please send out his next Pokemon or forfeit!"
—-
"Go Gary!" Misty cheered loudly as the rest of their group clapped.
"That was good," Brock started. "But Electivire looks tired."
The group eyed the electric type, and sure enough he was breathing heavily. "Fake out followed by Dragon Pulse must have done more damage than we thought." Professor Oak observed. "Not to mention Thunder and Thunder Punch taking up so much energy one right after the other."
Misty frowned at them. "He'll be fine! It's Gary after all!" She insisted.
—-
"Marowak, Lets go!" The Marowak that took the stage caused a ripple of confusion. Unlike the brown and beige Kantonian Marowak many had seen, or even the rare green and white, the Marowak Kiawe let out was dark purple, almost black, with a stark white skull that had an odd marking on the bone, and his his hand was a bone club, but with both ends burning in a teal blaze.
—-
"Is that another Alolan form?" May asked curiously.
Samuel Oak nodded. "I believe Alolan Marowak are Ghost Fire types."
"At least it isn't ground or Gary would be in real trouble." Dawn heaved a sigh of relief. Even if she regretted her part three years ago, Gary was still her friend and she didn't want him to fail.
—-
"Let the Battle between Marowak and Electivire: Begin!"
"Headbutt!" Marowak wasted no time diving towards his opponent, and slamming his bone-protected head into his target.
"ThunderBolt Electivire!" Gary quickly ordered before Marowak could hit, but seeing the smug look on Kaiwe's face, Gary started to regret his decision.
"Iron Head!" Bone turned silver metallic, shining with extra hardness, and Marowak stood still, feet firmly planted into the ground. Like most electricity, ThunderBolt headed straight for the metal, striking Iron Head and easily being directly reverted safely into the ground, dealing Marowak minimal damage. "Now: Bonemerang!"
"Hit it away with Iron Tail!"
Marowak easily flung his bone club toward his opponent, watching as Electivire tried to hit it away with both Iron Tails. Taking the distraction, Kiawe called out his next move. Normally, he would use Inferno Overdrive, but since Z-Moves weren't allowed, he'd just have to go with a good old fashioned Flare Blitz. "Flare Blitz!" Marowak lit up in a brilliant teal flame, body pulsing with warmth as he bolted towards Electiver. Still distracted, Electivirte barely heard Gary's warning, but it was too late. Marowak collided with Electivire, scooping his Bonemerang out of the air and delivering a heavy blow and knocked Electvire out cold.
"Electivire is Unable to Battle! Will Trainer Gary please send out his next Pokemon or Forfeit!"
Gary sighed as he recalled Electivire. He had watched Kiawe battle, the man seemed to have a very straightforward battle style, he hadn't expected him to be so sly. Luckily, Marowak seemed rather tired from Flare Blitz, and Gary had just the Pokemon for his next battle. "Umbreon lets go!" From the red and white ball jumped out one of Gary's closest Pokemon, a stark black fox like Pokemon with moon glow tinted rings around his ears, tail, forehead, shoulders, and hips.
"Breon!" Umbreon cooed, eyeing the Marowak before him.
"Let the battle between Umbreon and Marowak Begin!"
As soon as the referee stopped talking, Gary called out his attack, not even letting Kiawe prepare his Pokemon. "Dark Pulse!" The ring on Umbreon's forehead lit up in black and violet energy before sharp blades of black and purple shot out, colliding with Marowak and knocking him out instantly.
"Marowak is unable to battle! Will Trainer Kiawe please send out his final Pokemon or Forfeit!"
Kiawe blinked in surprise, and quickly recalled his Marowak. "Thanks for the work old friend." He praised, feeling his Pokeball heat up just a bit. Taking a deep breath, he pulled out his final Pokemon. "Arcanine, lets go!" From her Pokeball came a massive ginger canine with thick black stripes. Her muzzle was pulled back in a determined snarl.
"Let the battle between Arcanine and Umbreon: Begin!"
"Extreme Speed!"
"Quick Attack!"
Both trainers called out at the same time, and both Pokemon took off. Arcainine had wind whipping around her paws as she gave chase, while Umbreon let streaks of silver behind him as he dodged and tried to deliver hits. Both Pokemon were swift, but Arcanine much faster, Extreme Speed was a move that increased speed, and Arcanine was already bigger and faster than Umbreon, giving her attack a bit more of an edge.
"Use Crunch!" Kiawe ordered.
"Double Team!" In the blink of an eye multiple Umbreon scattered around the arena, confusing Arcanine when she bit into one of the doubles. "Shadow Ball!"
"Catch it with Crunch, followed by Extreme Speed!"
A sparking violet and black ball of ghost energy shot from one of the Umbreon's mouths. Arcanine's fangs oozed dark energy and destroyed the Shadow Ball between her jaws. Now that she knew where Umbreon was, she took off, colliding into him at top speeds, enough for him to lose his concentration, causing the other doubles to vanish.
"Psychic!" Gary quickly called out as Umbreon cried out in pain, but Kiawe called out his next move before Umbreon could focus enough.
"Close Combat!" Arcanine's body pulsed orange and red before she delivered a series of blows to the smaller Pokemon, effective given that Close Combat was a fighting type move and Umbreon was a dark type. Umbreon tried to fight back with Dark Pulse, but fell backwards with his red eyes swirling.
"Umbreon is unable to battle! Will Trainer Gary Please call out his next Pokemon or forfeit?"
Gary took a deep breath. He hadn't expected Arcanine to know Close Combat, but he wasn't worried. His final Pokemon was going to finish the battle easily. "Blastoise, lets go!" The massive Blue and tan tortoise with canons on his back popped easily out of his Pokeball. Despite having not battled regularly, he was still strong, and roaring for a good battle.
"Let the Battle Between Arcanine and Blastoise Begin!"
—-
"Gary has this in the bag!" Misty cheered loudly. As a water type expert, it was of her professional Opinion that no fire type could ever beat a water type! Especially one that she raised, or helped care for, and she did help care for Blastoise when Gary was swamped with work, so there was no way he would lose!
"Arcaine did use a lot of energy in her battle against Umbreon, and he does have the type advantage." Brock conceited, watching the battle closely as Dawn and May cheered behind him.
—-
"Finish this quickly with Hydro Cannon!" Gary ordered, and Blastoise readied his cannons.
"Extreme Speed, dodge and get behind it!" Arcanine barked and took off, easily dodging and weaving around the strong bursts of water. While Blastoise was strong, he was large and tanky, he didn't have the speed and agility that Arcanine did. "Sunny Day!" Once safely behind Blastoise, they water type drying desperately to turn and hit her with a blast of water, Arcanine raised her head and howled, her body glowing a bright orange before a beam shot off her and rtowards the sun, causing the arena to grow hotter as the sun beat down.
Gary narrowed his eyes at the display. "Must be preparing for a fire attack and wanted some extra juice." He mumbled to himself before calling out his next order. "Quick Blastoise hit her with Rapid Spin!" He knew Blastoise was too slow using any other moves, he was just too big and even if he could fire a Water Pulse of Hydro Pump, Arcanine could just used Extreme Speed to dodge again.
On his order, Blastoise sucked into his shell and started spinning with rapid speed. He spun toward Arcanine, aiming to hit her, but Kiawe was already on it. "Use Extreme Speed and jump off his shell!" Arcanine's paws swirled with wind once again before taking off. She ran towards Blastoise, and jumped onto his spinning shell last moment. Using the momentum, she launched herself up into the air. "Now use Solar Beam!"
"Solar Beam?!" Gary's eyes blew wide. "Blastoise get out of there!"
But Arcanine had already fired her attack. Sunny Day already helped her gather the energy faster, but using the jump to get closer to the sky helped even more. So with insane speed, Arcanine was able to open her muzzle and blast a shining green beam down on the Kantonian Starter.
Blastoise, miraculously, still stood, but he was obviously extremely damaged. Arcanine wasn't much better, having used up a lot of energy, and she was starting to fall. Gritting his teeth, Kiawe called for her next move, while Gary called out his.
"Hydro Pump!"
"Extreme Speed!"
Sharp jets of water shot towards Arcanine, who was falling through the air. As swiftly as she could, Arcanine moved herself out of the way, and ran down the jets of water until she smacked into Blastoise. Both Pokemon collapsed, trying desperately to stand. Blastoise could barely push himself up on his arms, but it didn't last long, and he passed out. Arcanine was holding herself up on her front paws, and soon followed suit.
"After careful review, the judges have decided that Arcanine is the winner of this battle! Meaning Kiawe has won the match!"
As both trainers returned the Pokemon, the stadium lit up in wild applause. Kiawe slid to his knees and heaved a stressed sigh. He truthfully hadn't been confident the last move would work, using Solar Beam at all was a rather new thing he and Ash had thought up when Lana had destroyed his team in one of their mock battles. But they had won! They were going to the next round!
—-
Ash clapped from where he sat with the other champions. He wasn't included in the voting, one because he was a participant, but two because he was Kiawe's friend and he didn't want to be called biased. He did admire how Gary battled though. Even though he had left the battle circuit a long time ago, it was obvious he and his Pokemon were still strong.
"Your turn Ash." Cynthia grabbed his attention and Ash nodded, reaching up to pet Raichu. "You ready?" She asked, blue eyes clouded with genuine concern.
Ash gave her a rough smile. "No, but we have to do this at some point. Right buddy?"
"Raichu!"
Grinning at his buddy, Ash headed towards his side of the arena. Standing across from him, across the half water arena, was Misty. In way, this battle brought Ash back to the memory of when he had first started out, when he battled her for the Cascade Badge so many years ago. But this was different, because they weren't friends, and Ash was not going to let her beat him.
TO BE CONTINUED…
Author's Comments: I kept forgetting that Shadow Ball is a Ghost Type move, and I don't know why. Also I spelled Kiawe's name wrong for most of this chapter and had to go back and fix it, kept spelling it Kaiwe instead of Kiawe. Miy brain was just scrambled while writing this chap or something. Also before you give me crap about Arcanine knowing Solar Beam, in game one of Kiawe's Arcanine knows Sunny Day and Solar Beam.
Next chapter is kinda big! Idk when it will be posted though cause school year and stuff.
