IV: Responsibilities and Ruses

Kayama Nemuri, Rated R Heroine: Midnight, was a sharp and intelligent woman; who knew what she was getting into the majority of the time. But with Daiten Kato, a man eight years her junior had wormed a way into her heart.

Granted it had happened by freak circumstance, something that the BDSM themed Heroine would agree to. But, the difference he made to her life was spectacular. Nemuri hadn't thought much about having a partner or even children; perhaps that was due to the fact that she was in her thirties and single.

Her eyes roamed over her bed partner and more frequent lover. There was the rustle of bedsheets as Kato rolled himself over; Nemuri remembered vividly how well proportioned he'd been when he'd been independently mobile. She moaned slightly as his warm hands found her naked hips "Everything okay?" He asked, curiosity evident, in a dry throat rasping question.

Nemuri rolled over, revealing herself fully to him, and moving closer, his arms pulling her in. She licked her lips, this was the life. However, the ringtone of a mobile broke the tranquil silence of this Saturday; an arm shot out and with a little bit of swearing on Kato's behalf he managed to answer it.

"Hello, Mom." Nemuri froze, it was that sentence that froze her to the core; an adult Daiten Kato was most certainly but at this point in time he was a student. Their relationship was frowned upon, but he was nowhere near her course. In fact, the members of staff he was closest to were Ectoplasm, Cementoss and Snipe.

Nemuri vaguely listened to the conversation when one question was called "So, when are you going to introduce us to your elusive housemate that we've never met?"

Kato gulped "Well, it's kind of a difficult situation. An extremely difficult one."

There was silence on the other end "Is this to do with education? I.e. Hypothetically they're a member of staff hopefully not in your department?"

"She's a heroic course history teacher and a pro-hero."

"Does she make you happy?"

"More than anything. How's the situation at the house? Last I heard the rooms were full and that was why I effectively moved out."

"Still packed, your brothers are sharing your space and are still trying to hack your PC."

"They can purchase it off me. It's close to two thousand Stirling. I'll sell it to them for five hundred."

"What if we funded you an identical one."

"Pick me up in three-quarters of an hour and we'll get that sorted. It'd be lovely to hopefully introduce Nemuri to you all, at least before we shut down due to this virus."

His mother hung up. Nemuri giggled as she looked at him "You're awful!" She commented.

Kato grinned, pecked her on the lips, and got out of bed "I'm a big brother. It's my privilege." With that, he wheeled his way to the bathroom. Living with Nemuri, Kato thought as the shower warmed and he moved into the renovated bathroom, was fun; he desperately wanted to say to her "I love you." He muttered to himself "You're a hero, I'm not. You've got a quirk and I don't. All I have are my university credits and a decent brain but no fucking legs or a quirk." He said this to himself as he scrubbed himself down and as he wheeled himself out, Nemuri was waiting for him.

"Are you still plagued by your disadvantages that you can't see what's standing in front of you?"

"Considering being a genius whilst attractive to some doesn't compare to the fact that I don't have a quirk."

"I don't care. I don't care about what you haven't got. I care about you. In fact Daiten Kato; I love you."

Kato sat there, hair dripping from the shower, steam curling off his body looked at her. "H...what?"

Nemuri giggled "You, honestly didn't think, I'd let anyone or even a hero such as me would allow anyone into their homes? Yes, first of all, it was due to the fact that you being here helped with the rent and mortgage. Then, after that spectacular show of debauchery at the karaoke club…"

"Eraserhead, Mic, Joke and you along with myself got overindulged in alcohol. We woke up together, I never knew Eraserhead could sing and Mic…couldn't; and yet he's the musical hero." Kato retorted dryly, the singing had been hilarious, the hangover less so but who he'd woken up with was positively brilliant.

"I am slightly concerned. You're twenty-three and I'm nearly ten years your senior." Nemuri retorted "What would your parents think?"

"Father's five years older than mother…They're going to be more surprised that I'm with you; they're sharp intellectually. They'll work out which hero you are."

Nemuri nodded "Kato, I really want this to work."

"As do I. Now, as much as I'd love to remain like this or less, my parents will be here in a bit and I'd rather not see them nude. Underwear is fine, well spent teenage years, but utterly naked…not preferred." With that and a wink, Kato wheeled back into the bedroom; and eight minutes later, he was wheeling into the kitchen.

The duo had just finished breakfast when the doorbell rang accompanied by a set of overly-enthusiastic banging. "Looks like its the parents and the runts."

Chiyo and Asuma arrived with Riku and Sora. Chiyo looked at Nemuri, the dark-haired woman nodded; meanwhile, Asuma looked his son in the eye "You're happy with everything?"

Kato sighed "It's…taken some adjustments but yes. Yes, I am."

Asuma looked at Nemuri "Your Midnight aren't you?"

Nemuri nodded, looking rather sheepish in jumper and jeans "I am. Before all of this happened, Kato is possibly the best housemate I could ask for. The things he can do in the kitchen."

"Don't get him to do chicken. He can't cook chicken." Riku chirped up.

"That was one time. Besides you got two days off school. Hard to believe that runt is nine and the other is eleven."

After a few minutes of bantering, the Daiten Five left the apartment. Kato was in the front seat, wheelchair in the back with his mother and siblings in the back. "I thought…"

"Kato, as long as you're happy, we're fine with your choices. We are surprised at such a revelation, but in all honesty with everything that has happened, we just want you to be happy. Speaking of, how is your research project going?"

"It's going well, Yaoyorozu Konan, recorded a success…In mice though. We managed to repair a spine in a mouse. Whether it remains is to be seen; other than that I can't say anything. It's a non-disclosure thing. Kyudai-sensei is positively klepto about his few and far between sponsored pupils. Each one of them has contributed massively to science."

Asuma nodded "What are you planning on doing?"

"Once semester starts up again, RG needs a pair of wheels in the recovery wing. Something about setting an example and a deterrent for idiots. Not quite sure if she means randy Undergraduates or boneheaded Hero Students or the idiots in General Ed wanting to get into Heroics. Sensei's recommended that even though I'm a researcher; I've got enough evidence to see me as a qualified doctor; specialising in the Central Nervous System…"

"Money is money. To think, you're the second to go to University in our part of the family, and now you're a Doctor. I'm so proud of you." They had ended up outside a computer store. Kato, rolled himself in only to find an old high-school classmate.

"Welcome…if it isn't the prodigy himself Kaiten Daito how's life, closer to the ground, boy wonder." The young man sneered.

Kato smirked "I'm still going to new heights. Anyway, I know where I'm going. Thank you for your most gracious offer for assistance." Kato engrained Kaguya Hizashi's face into his memory; if he remembered correctly Hizashi possessed an electrical quirk of some calibre. Kato fought to keep a grin off his face, and shook his head. For the slightest moment, the blank flesh-covered mass that should have been a face floated to the surface; the blue muscled brain protruding braindead monstrosity known as a Nomu. "Kaguya Hizashi, you'll make for a brilliant test subject. Now, to read over Konan-sans file…"

"...to? Kato." Kato snapped back to find Riku holding out the motherboard box.

"Sorry, thinking about something."

"This the motherboard you have at home?" True enough it was. It took two hours, but two hours later, Kato left the store with brand new supplies for his new computer. He'd transfer all of his games and completely reset his old computer so his younger brothers had a brand new PC to play with.

The old PC was nearly four years old. Relatively new for the most part in most people's eyes. But soon enough, Kato armed with his new components for his pc and five images of members of staff left. Then his phone rang.

"Moshi, Moshi, Daiten Kato speaking."

"Kato-Kun, it's Yaoyorozu Konan…I know it is the weekend but I need you to get to the hospital, can you get over here."

Asuma looked at his eldest "Work?"

Kato nodded "On my way." He turned to his father and nodded.

"Dare I ask?"

"My…project. There have been some…unexpected developments."

Asuma nodded "Should I wait?"

"This shouldn't take too long. Half an hour at the maximum."

(Lab)

Kato wheeled in to find Konan and Kyudai already present "Yaoyorozu-san, Kyudai-Sensei…what's amiss."

Kyudai turned "Someone sabotaged the lab. Thus Yaoyorozu's recordings and the test sampling on the mice using batch 64432B has been disproven. What makes it worse is I was the one who did it; one must keep trying."

Kato's hands shook, a twitch in his eyebrow was detected. "Do...we have CCTV?"

"We do. Daiten-San, what are you planning?" Konan asked slightly scared; her boss possessed a manic charisma that came across making him intense and driven. Considering what he was working on, would revolutionise the world! Heroes who'd retired from spinal injuries might return.

"I know what you're thinking…There is so much we don't know about quirks and how they influence the body; this…project WILL investigate that but right now it is being done selfishly. Yaoyorozu-san, I believe you've realised this but never said because you didn't want to know just how self-serving this thesis actually is."

Konan snorted "What research is ever created unselfishly? Nothing is ever done, out of serving others; it's all about pursuing a selfish dream. Admittedly your dream is less selfish than others; quadriplegics and paraplegia still occur…So, no Daiten-San I don't believe this to be selfish and self-serving research programme. It does surprise me that you're being open about it; does make me wonder if you're hiding something else?"

Kato couldn't resist, he winked to Kyudai "Are you insinuating that I'm in cahoots with a deranged scientist creating artificial supersoldiers with multiple quirks to throw the world into a perpetual and turbulent state of terror?"

There was a tense silence before Yaoyorozu began giggling "No, nothing like that…I mean that's preposterous! You'd need to have evidence to show me that; I mean that's quite evidently fiction! Did you spend your childhood reading fantasy and nothing but fantasy?"

"I've read, still read and play lots of the genre of fantasy. I'm also a big fan of anatomy, chemistry etc…Enough about my hobbies; what do we do about this cock-up?"

"We'll have to reproduce the experiment, admittedly it's going to set us back a while." Kyudai admitted, his mentee was hilarious. Although his frankness unsettled the aged doctor about the truth. "Then again the TRUTH is stranger than fiction."

Kato wheeled about "We'll do it on Monday, I've got family meeting the other half today.

Kyudai nodded "Enjoy the rest of the weekend if possible." He caught his students eye, this was odd.

Kato, wheeled himself out of the Hospital. "Do I really want to do this? Do I really want to condemn adults for acting like children; that's the epitome of selfishness. Then again you're in bed with a Darth Vader lookalike and the Emperor...The first step towards darkness is to remove yourself from existence; get them one at a time."

"Everything alright?"

"Setbacks, father. Nothing more."
