Caroline tells her three kids that she's leaving their father over dinner. They knew something was up, their mother never spends time with them without at least one member of staff present. Kendall is 14 and already looks tired of this world. Roman and Shiv are 11 and not yet jaded.
"I've decided to move back to England," she informs them brightly. "On a more permanent basis."
Kendall pauses with a forkful of spaghetti to his lips. "With Dad?"
"No. Your father and I have⦠irreconcilable differences." She adds, "I hope you'll come with me, of course."
Kendall and Roman immediately start protesting, they have lives here. "Why do you have to go so far away?" Roman asks, beginning to cry.
"It's not that far, Rome," Kendall reassures him, putting an arm around him. "It's a seven hour flight."
Shiv says what she's been thinking from the moment her mother dropped this bombshell. "I want to stay with Dad."
Caroline stares at her with a flicker of hurt. "Yes, I thought you might," she says finally. "Well, your father wants to keep you all, obviously. He only let Connor go because his mother wasn't around to compete with."
"That's not fair, Mom," says Kendall quietly. Roman is still sniffing. Shiv takes a mouthful of carbonara.
