Chapter 47: Konstantine
Country: Russia, State: Siberia, City: Siberian Wilderness, Place: Kitezh, Area: Lost City, Month: November, Day: Thursday 30th, Year: 2000, Time: 06:31 KRAT…
Leon, Kat, and Lara reached the top of a tower. Lara and Kat checked on Leon as he'd kick a Deathless off him in the climb, then holding on with one hand, he pulled his handgun and fired several times at the undead creature's head. It fell from him while disintegrating.
"I'm good." He assured as he holstered his gun and got a good hold with his now free hand. He looked up ahead of them. "We've got a fight ahead." He gave a small chin lift to indicate the top of their climb.
Lara and Kat looked ahead of them too. Deathless were locked in battle with Trinity forces. It was looking like Trinity was on the losing side. They seemed like they were well, but then a fighter would lag or get fatigued, then it was over for that fighter as they'd be swarmed by four deathless warriors. Quickly Trinity's numbers were dwindling.
Looking over to the far left, Lara could see a few of Trinity's people guarding someone. Lara pulled her binoculars and peered through them. Her hand tightened on the binoculars as she saw a face, anger coursed through her. "Ana…" She growled.
"Easy. We'll get there." Kat assured.
They moved quickly behind some new cover after jumping from the tower wall and closer to the fighting.
"GUYS! GET DOWN!" Sofia yelled from their radios.
Lara pulled her radio as Leon pulled his shotgun and Kat her rifle. "Sofia?! Where are you?!" Lara asked, confused with her location and how she knew where the three were.
They jolted as a flaming rock flew and hit the side of the building next to them. Its impact sent rubble, ice, and fire flying. The ground shook as they saw that both Trinity and Deathless had been cleared from their path.
"I see you guys." Sofia told them as they looked to the right and over a half wall. "We'll do whatever we can to support you from here." She said and waved an arm; she and the others of her people were at a trebuchet.
Another launch and more of the group's enemies were cleared away.
"Thanks for the help. We'll take however much you can give." Leon informed into his radio.
They moved along the path, ducking into cover as both Trinity and Deathless tried to attack them or each other. They would shoot guns or bows. Swing axes. Slash with spear and knives. The smell of blood in the air was ignored by the three. They had a mission to focus on. The gunpowder smell burnt and stung their throat and nose as the dragged in ragged breaths of air. The smell of fire and the smoke, however, was stronger and it coated their throats in ash. After killing their opponents, they found that the only thing in their way was a bunch of ice that had fallen from above.
"Get to cover, you three!" Sofia warned. "We're about to fire and you're out in the open!"
"We can't stop now. I'm close…We're so close." Lara answered before either Leon or Kat could as they moved through a gap in the ice and stone railing. "We have to go through." She informed as one of the projectiles landed ahead, showering them with ice and a wave of heat.
They stumbled through the ice chunks and were back to fighting again.
Leon was about to fire on a group, when they were struck down from their allies, dropping both Trinity's people and Deathless. The yells from both were cut off as they died. Leon looked to see that Kat and Lara were following him as they ducked into cover. Over the roar of the fire, gun fire and growls from the Deathless, they could hear the screams of the dying men and women of Trinity. Just ahead of them, a troop of Deathless came out with bows, aiming at the group. Lara fired her own arrow at a pot of Greek Fire near the archers.
It erupted with blue fire and showered the Deathless. As they turned to supernatural ashes, Trinity men came running into the cover ahead and started firing at them.
As much as Kat was enjoying the fight. This was annoying having two groups fighting them and slowing them down. "HEY! MAYBE FIGHT THE ANCHENT WARRIORS THAT ARE UNDEAD! YOU STORMRUPER AIM MIGHT WORK ON THEM, SCEKTCHY KNOBS!"
Lara burst out laughing with Leon. That last bit was the worst mix of insults they'd heard. It was the perfect tension reliever given all the stress. Kat smiled as if that had been her intension. They split up to different covers in time to avoid a grenade. Guns were pulled out and they were back into the fight. There were only four Trinity people left, so it only took a few well aimed shots.
But more of Trinity's forces showed up and any reprieve was gone once more. Leon and Lara took on two of them as they had riot shields. Kat handled the gunners and speedily took them down with her rifle. Aim, fire, aim, fire, reload, repeat. Just as Leon pulled his knife from a guy's back he looked up. More were coming and they didn't have enough cover. He almost panicked before he saw the Trebuchets fire.
"Oh shit!" He yelled pulling Lara into cover with Kat.
They peered over and watched the mix of mercenaries and fanatics being taken out by the two flaming rocks. They watched with relief before standing and avoiding some falling ice.
"Thanks, Sofia, hellofa shot." Kat voiced as they ran on.
Country: Russia, State: Siberia, City: Siberian Wilderness, Place: Kitezh, Area: Lost City, Month: November, Day: Thursday 30th, Year: 2000, Time: 06:49 KRAT…
They reached the top of a tower. It was open to the sky but had several forms of cover. Just as they were about to move for the exit to continue to the Chamber of Souls, the bright blue-white spotlights of a tactical helicopter appeared behind them. They spun with wide eyes. They could see the guns on that thing as it just hovered and flew slowly around them.
"All squads!" The pilot shouted from the chopper's loudspeaker. "I have visual on Croft, Kennedy, and Warren!" He announced as he flew over them and they ducked into the only cover they had. "They must not be allowed into the Chamber of Souls!" It was then that they all recognized the pilot's voice.
"Konstantine." Lara gritted, Leon snarled, and Kat growled.
None of them wanted the man dead more than Lara. But Leon and Kat both wanted him dead for hurting their friends. Both in the past and present. Leon saw a trebuchet launch a shot in the air. He moved to shoot it but Lara had beat him too it. Her bullets hit the flying jar and shattered blue flames over the helicopter that it would've missed otherwise.
"Come down and face me, you coward!" Lara yelled with pure rage.
The fiery goo that was the Greek Fire landed and stuck to exposed parts of the helicopter and ignited the propellers base. The alarm of something going wrong sounded and filled the cabin with an array of squawking and beeping. Smoke billowed out in the air around the vehicle. It obscured the windshield enough that it was hard to see through it. Konstantine cursed loudly.
"Ahh, damn it!" He shouted as he tried to gain control of the damaged vehicle. "Send in a squad! Now!" He ordered sharply as the chopper flew out of their view. "I want them dead!"
At that point a troop of Trinity men appeared. Looked like they'd run out of females to fight, or they just had more male members. The three were quick to attack them. Loosing arrows, firing bullets, and throwing Greek Fire Molotov's at them. The men weren't prepared for the aggressive moves of the three who were done with fighting people that were in their way. When the Deathless arrived the 20-man squad went down quickly like flies.
So, the three ducked into their cover, taking out the Deathless and Trinity men that were flanking them. They let the Deathless and men behind them fight each other. They were focused on the task before they heard the blades of the helicopter getting closer again.
"Guys! He's headed back your way!" Sofia warned them.
A missile was fired but was off course and only hit the side and took out both Trinity and Deathless. The helicopter swerved around the tower, so it was in their sight. "I'm not done!" He yelled at them just as angry as Lara.
"Give us time. We're reloading." Sofia told them as they felt their cover vibrate sharply from the helicopter's gunfire.
They had to abandon the cover as the wood started to splinter on their side. Getting behind some stone after climbing over a short wall. The bullets followed them until they were behind the stone.
"Fuck!" Kat yelled as she felt a burning sensation on the side of her thigh. "Again!"
Leon and Lara looked over as she pulled her leg closer to her chest. Blood was staining her pant leg. Leon rushed around Lara and pulled some bandages from his bag.
"Lara, you got him?" He asked as he focused on patching Kat's leg up.
"Yeah." Lara nodded as another round of gunfire happened. "I'll handle him."
"It's ready! On your signal!" Sofia alerted as Kat hissed when Leon applied some herbs to her graze.
"I'm ready! Go!" Lara said into her radio as she ran to a new cover and to draw the helicopter's fire.
"Alright! Here it goes!" Sofia warned.
The shot flew and just as it was over the helicopter, Lara shot it. But it exploded and didn't affect the helicopter as badly as the first time.
"No luck…" Lara reported. "Once again, Sofia, get ready!"
"We're loading up the trebuchet, hold on!" Sofia informed as Lara moved again to a new cover.
"Leon, how's Kat?" Lara asked into her radio as it was too loud to yell it.
Leon tightened the bandage as Kat hissed. "Patched up. Likely gonna move around slowly for a bit."
"Why do I keep getting hurt? Is there like a target on my back?" Kat wondered jokingly.
"No clue." Leon smiled at her as he peered over cover.
"We're ready when you are, Lara! Just give us the signal!" Sofia called.
"Now!" Lara yelled as she fired a few shots at the wind shield then moved to a stone cover.
But again, the fire missed the helicopter.
"We're not going to be able to hit him from here!" Sofia called with frustration.
"I know. I've got to shoot the fire ball in the air." Lara voiced loudly into her radio before moving to a new cover as the stone started chipping.
Just in time to avoid a missile that ripped the rocks apart. Leon and Kat moved to a new cover as well, but Kat moved a lot slower.
"Get ready, let's try again!" Lara called to Sofia as the bullets continued to rip up the stones around her.
"Does he have infinite ammo on that thing?" Kat asked annoyed with the noise.
"There is pausing. So, someone's reloading." Leon pointed out.
"Give us time, Lara; we're reloading!" Sofia called back.
Kat looked at the windshield and shook her head. Even through her rifle scope she couldn't see Konstantin properly. "We have to rely on the fireball. I can't get a shot at him with my rifle."
"Okay, we're ready! On your signal!" Sofia called as Kat and Lara readied their rifles.
Looking up Lara saw the helicopter got into the right position. "Fire!"
"Here it comes!" Sofia said as it launched.
This time both Kat and Lara fired at the fireball. Their bullets hit it just as it was over the propeller's base. The flames rained over it and damaged them farther.
"Got you, you son of bitch…" Lara hissed.
The base of the helicopter's propellers was on fire and smoking dark black plumes. The helicopter veered off and away giving the three some relief from the high caliber bullets and missiles.
"If there is anyone alive down there, I want Croft, Kennedy, and Warren dead!" Konstantin ordered with a strained voice. "That's your last order!"
"Wow, tell us how you really feel." Leon rolled his eyes.
They were in battle again with ground troops. Part way into defending themselves, they got another radio call/update from Sofia.
"Guys, we're under attack!" Sofia shouted. "We're trying to get rid of this son of a bitch!"
"You have to get out of here!" Kat yelled into her radio before reloading and firing.
"No!" Sofia yelled. "We're in this fight to the end!"
"Thank you, Sofia." Lara said as they continued their fight against Trinity and Deathless.
"Guys! He's headed back your way!" Sofia warned as they grouped up again.
They stopped coming out of cover and looked up just as a smoking and flaming helicopter flew overhead. A missile was launched. It missed, but took down so much of their cover they were in the open with just some debris and crates as cover.
"Let's finish this!" Konstantine yelled at them enraged at how none of them had died.
"We have to reset the counterweight; we'll be ready soon!" Sofia assured as they got ready to fight the damaged helicopter, again.
The group struggled to move from cover to cover to avoid getting hit by the bullets. Kat slower than the other two. But it seemed like Konstantine wanted Lara dead more than Leon or Kat.
"Okay, we're ready!" Sofia alerted as they ducked behind a broken wooden tower. "On your signal…"
Kat looked around the corner and nodded. "Now!" She said as she readied her rifle.
"Launching!" Sofia alerted.
Kat spotted the fireball. She aimed down her scope. Then squeezed the trigger. This time, as the ball exploded the controls were damaged and glitching judging by Konstantine's frustrated yells and the fact that the thing was spinning wildly in the air.
"Yes! Good shot, Kitty!" Leon cheered as Lara smiled.
The helicopter crashed into the building next to them. The shockwave from its impact, however, affected the buildings in the area. The ground shook before the wood under them cracked and splintered. With their combined weight, the wood gave out. They shouted in alarm as they crashed through the wooden boards and onto stone support pillars. The impact knocked the wind from them all for a bit. Before any of them could ask something, they realized that where they were not only near where the helicopter had hit and fallen, but the Deathless were patrolling around. Even as the three got their breath back, they struggled not to make too much noise.
They rolled to their feet and tapped shoulders to check on each other before looking to the Deathless below them. There were at least four. They moved quickly. Lara jumped at one of the Deathless and sank her knife into the side of his neck. She rode him to the ground before twisting and pulling her knife back. Leon leapt from the pillar too and sank his knife into the back of a Deathless's neck, severing its spinal cord and killing it. He looked as Kat jumped onto another one and impaled her target with her axe and then threw her spear at the last one.
They ducked to hiding places as three more Deathless came into the room. They took them out in a similar stealthy fashion. They were startled though as a yell came from next to them. Konstantine had been waiting for them to get tired enough that he could take on the agent, Valkyrie, and archaeologist. He cracked his rifle to the back of Lara's neck and sent her to the floor.
Leon and Kat pulled their weapons. Konstantine grabbed Lara by her ponytail and yanked her to her feet, taking her bow from her to get rid of one of her more notable weapons. Leon and Kat opened fire on him as Konstantine had let go of Lara to put her bow to his back.
The three got to cover as Konstantine fired at their retreating forms. "Just you and I now!" He called in an almost crazy way. "You have no weapons! No Allies! No hope!"
"You numb nut! We've still got weapons!" Kat yelled and looked at Leon with the 'can you believe this idiot' look.
Leon gave her a shrug. "No allies my ass!"
"And we've got plenty of hope, knobhead!" Lara called out as they moved from cover to cover.
"It doesn't matter! This place will become your tomb!" He shouted and threw a grenade between them. "None of you can hide!"
Leon threw a smoke bomb at Konstantine. It went off and the man started coughing up a storm as he turned his back to them in the cloud.
"The smoke can't hide you! Come fight me! Don't hide in the shadows!" The man yelled while coughing.
Leon fired a shot into the smoke and Konstantin yelled in pain. No one was sure where the man was hit but he was hit. They all took cover as bullets fired from the smoke.
"NO!" Konstantine yelled in pain. "My destiny lies in the Chamber of Souls…" He called in a desperate fashion as the smoke started to thin. "I've come too close to be stopped now."
They split up as air cleared.
"You know, you're stronger than your father ever was." He yelled at Lara as Lara's teeth gritted.
Lara pulled her axe and rushed at Konstantine's back. He yelled in pain and fumbled. He turned around. He drew his knife and tried a swing at her. Lara dodged the swing easily. And countered it, sinking her blade angrily into the man's sternum. He yelled in pain as he looked down at the knife wound. He fell to the floor as Lara yanked the axe back.
Leon and Kat came out of their covers and kept their guns on the man as Lara took her bow back from him. Konstantine slowly looked around him as Lara hooked her bow to her back and backed off. Kicking his gun away from him as she walked.
"This…" Konstantine rasped as he sank to his side against a rock. "This is not my destiny. I was meant for greatness!" He yelled as he coughed on blood.
Lara kneeled before him as Kat and Leon looked around the fires keeping a watch on their backs. "This was never your destiny." She told him calmly. "Your sister let you believe that."
Konstantine looked away from her. "I did all…all of this…" He began in a pained voice. "For her."
Ruble started falling. Leon backed up slightly with Kat.
"We need to go, Lara." Kat said. "This place is falling apart."
Lara nodded and moved to follow the agents. Konstantine glared at them.
"Don't you walk away from me!" He thundered sharply.
They all turned away from him. ducking some falling rocks.
"WAIT!" Konstantine yelled at them, making Lara look back. "Trinity killed your father!" He yelled at her.
Lara glared at him. "I already know! You asshole!" She yelled at him her hand gripping her right gun.
"He begged for his life." Konstantine called out making them stop walking all together. "And when he failed…He begged for yours!"
For a moment Lara seemed like she was going to walk back over. But she shook her head as she looked at all the fire. Killing him with a bullet would be far, far to kind to the man she was now sure killed her father. "You're not worth it." She gritted as she turned her back on him, walking with Leon and Kat.
She only looked back when Konstantine started screaming. She watched as fire engulfed his body. He screamed and thrashed in the flames. The ground gave way under him, and he fell below with fire and debris following him.
"Burn in Hell." She snarled before the three left.
