How she'd managed to fall into actual sleep given everything going on was a true wonder. Yet she must have given that next time Cal opens her eyes she wasn't sitting ramrod straight in the back seat of a speeding car with Lilith behind the wheel and Ashley sitting nervously in the passenger seat as they weaved their way too fast down the roadway.
No, now Cal found herself back in a very familiar landscape.
Eden.
Or at last, what was left of it as Cal pushed herself gingerly to her feet amid the shriveled brown patches of dead grass under her dream-allowed apparition. Another quick glance downwards had the hunter cringing even more once she catches how her dream selves outfit mirrored the one, she'd last worn the night she'd held the sliver spear to her legacy's chest saying things she wished to any deity she knew that she could take back.
The once fragrant and earthy flavor of the place was now turned as rotted and soured as the decomposing fruit falling one by one from the limp tree branches of the dying place to join those already discarded onto the ground.
Even the gleaming silver sword she'd once held hangs rusted and impaled in another tree. But the weapon itself wasn't what had fresh tears coming to Cal's eyes. It was what the dulled weapon was run through.
The still twitching serpent she'd first seen coiling in possessive anger around her legacy's shoulders the very first time they'd shared a dream giving a weakened hiss at Cal's approach.
She would have attempted to help the clearly dying serpent when she hears the drawing sounds of…..
Was that a piano?
Cal's foggy mind immediately tried to place the song. It had to be something in the boy band power ballad genre she concludes racing off in search of the source as fast as her dream self would allow.
"Juliette?!" she called out her tone hopeful despite her throat clogging with another breath of rotten peaches making her cough hard into her next yell "J—Juliette?" as the searching hunter plunged into another section of lifeless not so greenery of the dying garden when the melody suddenly cut off and morphed into the sounds of an obvious struggle.
"You honestly think she'll take you back?" Cal hears the one she guessed had the upper hand taunting as she draws closer. "Do you not remember what it took for this to be a thing in the first place?"
"You're wrong." The struggling one argues. Cal can make out her staggering outline among the withering brush as the two seem to be circling one another like wolves readying for an attack. Hunting for an opening.
"Am I?"
"She wouldn't have bothered looking at all if she didn't care."
"Always about you," The voice Cal was thinking of likening to Elinor scoffed "ever cross your mind maybe Callie could come to care for me just as much as she did you once?"
"Her name is Cal."
"Juliette." Cal gasped now looking horrified at the sight before her.
Two Juliettes or she guessed a more accurate assumption would be Juliette and Ashley.
Only their wardrobes told them apart.
Sadly, it looked as if her legacy, once again dressed in the bloodied clothes of her and Cal's last meeting was on the losing side of this sudden battle with the way Juliette the real Juliette, her Juliette was now flat on her back with the rusted but still deadly silvered blade tip of sword Cal had thought she'd left impaled in the struggling serpent held at her throat.
Juliette only gets out a surprised "Cal?" as she struggles to get a good look at the approaching hunter.
But as Cal moves to help her the surroundings of the garden were replaced as Cal doubled over to catch her breath with her hands braced against her knees.
Could someone throw up and pass out simultaneously in a dream? Cal wonders staggering a little more at the so sudden shifting of her surroundings.
Anything was better than having to relive the sight of her tearful legacy rolling up her shirt sleeve in her peripheral vision.
Until it feeds from… the one who made it.
"Don't worry." Juliette's voice purred from right beside her as Cal forced herself to relive the memory, she'd soon leave buried deep in her memory of her brother latching so grateful and so hungry onto Juliette's offered forearm. "Give me a little more time and soon that's all she'll ever be to you ever again." The softer purr of her ex's voice hummed against her ear "just a weak, annoying. Memory."
Cal felt her stomach lurch again in unease when on her last word the Juliette at her side lunges towards the unaware Juliette still standing with Theo latched on her arm. A flash of silver as the spear she'd once used in her threat shoved hard into the vampire's unprotected back….
"No."
"Hey, hey easy." Lilith soothed but slowly lowered the hand she'd been about to put out to shake the sleeping teenager's shoulder. "Just wanted to tell you we're here."
"W-Where is here?" Cal asked with a yawn, rubbing her tired eyes with the heel of her hand. Sure Ashley had graciously offered to shelter her from the 'bad blood' Cal hadn't been entirely lying about in her explanation for her panic at the idea of her ex's vengeful elder sister now on the loose but that didn't mean Cal knew for sure where the heck Ashley's 'my place' was on a map.
Just a dream. It was just a dream. She repeated to herself in a vain attempt to calm her drumming heartbeat throwing itself against her ribs. Her sleepy eyes moved to the still-napping Ashley curled up in the front seat. Her head pillowed against the arm she'd leaned against the passenger window as she'd slept unaware of Cal's worried confusion.
"A haven if you will. Sanctuary."
"Looks more like a hotel." Cal counters in another yawn as she squinted past the glare of the car window at the place they'd stopped "or an upper scaled apartment block."
"Can't it be both?" Lilith asks hitting the locks on the doors and the trunk.
"I'll carry her. Seems cruel to wake her up." Cal argues at the Mother's look towards the still dozing teenager in the front seat.
Lilith nodes in seeming understanding to Cal's unspoken asking. "I'll get your bag." She agrees.
"C—C-Cal?"
"Ssshh, just rest. I've got you." Cal promised as her arm dropped to catch under Juliette's legs at the same time her groggy ex loops her arms so trusting around Cal's shoulders in counterbalance.
"Love you, Callie," Ashley mumbles nuzzling her face against the warmed dip of the hunter's shoulder as the hunter draws her up from the car's passenger seat.
"Love you too, Jules." Cal answers truthfully kicking the car door closed behind her.
